Installing Swype Beta on Nexus One

How do I install Swype beta on the Nexus One? I found http://www.mobilecrunch.com/2009/12/30/how-to-get-swype-on-android/ but it's only for Droid. Doesn't work on the N1 because the screen resolution is wrong.
It still works,I use the Droid version on my N1 without an issue - it'll give the error message about the screen size but if you press the text field again it'll pop up and work fine.
it actually DOES work, just not in landscape. Just close the error message and go to input portrait mode again and it'll work. I just turned off auto orientation to always keep my phone in portrait mode to avoid any crashes while laying down and it switching to landscape. There is an .apk file out there that says they have patched it but to no avail =P
Swype is my keyboard while driving (1 handed operation) but I use Smart Keyboard (free on market) for regular landscape typing.
What am I doing wrong then? I installed it, then the same error comes up about the screen size. I click start and when I go to type, no keyboard comes up.
On second thought, I may have had a bad apk file. I downloaded the one in the first post and got it to work.
Looks like it works sometimes. The error message is bugging me, though. There's also no way to hide the keyboard sometimes, unlike the stick keyboard (which you can drag down to hide).
When using Swype and latest Cyanogen rom I cannot use camera. If I disable Swype, then the camera works fine.

Just press the back button to hide it.
Just wondering if anyone here has the ability to get rid of the warning message and landscape version?
It must be a relatively easy task for an experienced dev?
This guy managed to fix it for Hero, Magic etc. and no nag screen and landscape works. Look like he will attempt to fix N1 version as well. Info here:

Wont download for me !!! Just keeps resetting the page.
Anyone able to disable the error message? I am using the english n russian only version.
I'd prefer Swype, but other options exist...
I'd rooted my Kindle Fire and put Swype on there, and use it on my Evo (work phone) and on Incredible. So I'd prefer to have the same tool on all devices.
Two similar products that reportedly DO work with Nexus:
TouchPal Keyboard (free)
SlideIT ($5.99)
Both are in the Android Marketplace
Somewhere I think I've got the apk for ShapeWriter as well, and I used to like that one, so could be worth a test.
I'm not sure what the problem is here? I've been using Swype on my N1 for as long as I can remember, and have never had any problems?
Yeah...why not just download the beta from the official Swype website?

I second that. It's so much simpler. Detects your phone & offers the best suited version to download. All you need to do is register & create a username & password for yourself.

Scaled Back Stock ROM

This is a build I put together yesterday... It's basically stock ROM with the bloatware removed along with most sense elements... I'm working on a more pure vanilla, but builds thus far are really unstable. This build has been stable on my phone- with the exception of Rosie Utility FC at startup that I can't figure out since Rosie is gone. Wifi tether is enabled, google apps are included, su and busybox are installed and working, and I'm using launcher2 for now. Try it out and see what you think- nothing special, but it's something to play with until the pros release something great...
link removed- see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=713316 for newest work...
I am getting major force closes on every thing when it boots up. Am I doing anything wrong. The only ROM I can get to work is the cyan test rom.
Acore is one of the force close but there are many when it boots.
did you wipe before install? I haven't had these problems... so it's hard to tell you what's going on- sorry it's not working for you though...
I did do a wipe but not sure if I am doing it right. It does seem like it is installing both roms. What is the best way to wipe?
In clockwork recovery select wipe data/factory reset... then wipe cache partition.
Yeah I finally got to wipe. Thanks for the help
Any chance you will get a version of this with the stock android dialer and phone.apk (i.e. like the Nexus One)?
That's where I'm headed eventually... I'm trying to figure out how to get nexus over to the inc, but the gsm/cdma thing is busting my ass... So far I have it loading with working hardware, but it won't join the damn network...

just to help out, from experimenting with rom building myself i came across this:
Search the XDA-developers forum for "Safely remove Rosie.apk on FreshToast 1.1?" (I cannot post a link because its a new account sorry)
its meant for the HTC Hero BUT it explains that you want to get rid of HtcAddProgramWidget.apk to make that FC go away.
the question is will that break anything, try it and find out
I flashed your rom and saw the FC then "rm HtcAddProgramWidget.*" and the FC went away in the setup process. idk if it breaks anything else when you actually use the phone though. good luck!

Nice- thanks for the help...
I'd like to see a stock dialer work with verizon to troubleshoot an issue.
A weird issue which not many people have seemed to mention is the fact that you can't make multiple calls with Verizon. Perhaps its a verizon limitation? I am new to verizon so I am not sure.. When I mean make multiple calls, all you can do with the stock incredible is place a call, add a call and then conference it. You cannot put your first call on hold, make a second call and then go back to the first call. The phone app will only allow you to conference it. Also when you hit end calls its ends both calls..
The EVO does not have this problem, but it being on sprint perhaps they support it.. As both are CDMA networks I believe it should work with the incredible?
I would love a senseless rom with the stock android dialer. I would be ok with sense but the sense dialer is a pos. i just hate it.
If you have something like Dialer One installed, it's actually ok to delete HtcDialer.apk and HtcDialer.odex from /system/app. You can say goodbye to the Sense dialer. Even if you still use the Sense launcher, when you press Phone it will bring up Dialer One and will not fc on you.
I finally put together a stock nexus rom for the Inc, but I'm having the same issues as the cyanogenmod... says TCDMA64 at the top and the damn camera won't work... does anybody know how to properly deodex the stock apps from the Inc.? Try as I might I can't get it to work...
On a brighter note- it's fast, and light... just won't take pictures...

[Q] Android Keyboard from 2.1 -> 2.2

I don't know about you guys, but I've never been a fan of Swype or Samsung's keyboard, but I loved the Android Keyboard. Does anyone know if it works or have the apk for it? I wanna try and put it back on my 2.2 install and test it out.
I just found this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=744373
Looks kinda like what I was looking for, but without the little part that slides upwards for the numbers.
This is what you're looking for.
LatinIME.apk
1. Put it on your SD card
2. Install via whatever you like to use.
or use the ADB to install it.
Thank you. That was just what I looking for. Only thing is, even when I enable the vibrate on keypress, it's not giving me any haptic feedback.
I'm using the keyboard here, listed under FroYo.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=740301
Just install it as a regular app.
And do you get haptic feedback on the Android kb?
Edit: Yepp, the one from the AOSP thread actually has working feedback. Thank you MikeyMike.
Edit2: I lied. It doesn't. Lol
I've been using AnySoftKeyboard from the market.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Guys... You can enable it in the input options...
Settings > Locale and Text > Android Keyboard.
I know that. In 2.2 there is no android keyboard, they got rid of it. I want it back because I find it superior. However none of the ones I've installed have haptic feedback like they did on 2.1 and that's what I want. And yes I know that you have to enable it in the settings.

Thank you man, you're a lifesaver

I don't know if I hate haptic feedback or the samsung keyboard more. The Android keyboard is the best one out there (IMHO)
My whole point in creating this thread was to get the Android Keyboard back on 2.2 and have it fully functioning. Meaning I wanted the haptic feedback on it to work and it doesn't. Was there another file or something that went with the LatinIME.apk on 2.1 that I don't know about or couldn't find? Can anybody shed some light on this situation? I desperately hate the Swype and Samsung Keyboards.
No luck with this? I would like to have the Android 2.1 keyboard back as well. (with the hepatic response)
No luck. But I think I may know what the problem is.
On a few of the android keyboards I've seen around the forums, some of them had a corresponding .so file. I don't really know what that is, but I'll go do some research, rummage through my JF6 dump, and post my results here.
Edit1: Ok, so here is what I found. A .so file is a shared object file. Not quite sure what it actually does still, but the Android Keyboard (AOSP) has a .so file that goes with it. I'm guessing that this file is what allows the keyboard to have haptic feedback. I'm going to take the one from my JF6 dump and push it to JI6 and see what happens after a reboot.

can't use both of them at the same time as they both use the same file names.
EDIT: they do have option for vibrate on key press (haptic) though doesnt work.
Neither of them have haptic feedback on 2.2. I just tried both. And yes I did enable it in the keyboard settings. This is really frustrating. Why the heck did they remove this keyboard??

just realized it doesnt work though it is an option. my fault!
i never liked it anyways so im not missing anything
I'm experiencing the same thing, default froyo keyboard on a captivate with froyo, no haptic feedback.
So far I've tried:
- a bunch of different google searches for the same issue
- finding the apk in /system/app and giving it full permissions + reboot + uncheck and recheck the haptic feedback setting
- poking around the file system to see if I can find any settings to mess with
I understand froyo for the captivate is pretty new, but I'm surprised more people aren't asking about the best keyboard (IMO) missing a significant feature.
I agree. This is a superb keyboard and should not have been taken out
Sent from my Captivate
Yes I agree that the Android keyboard is awesome! Actually it was one of the reasons I liked my switch from iPhone. It's so easy to type with unlike most touch keyboards. Why in the world would Samsung get rid of it? Talk about a step backwards. I hesitate to update my phone now. I hope someone can come up with the perfect fix....
*typed on my android keyboard*
I just wish I could figure out a way to hack it back onto 2.2 in 100% working order. Everything works except for the haptic feedback and I cannot figure out why.

Took me a while to find this post and was wondering if anything has come of this? I just recenetly flashed to the latest cognition froyo build and ran into this exact same issue, however their latest build came with an android keyboard. Has anyone found a solution to this?

Handcent skin mod

This is the first anything I have put forth to share, but wanted to because everyone shares with me. I took the darkness skin offered by handcent and put my own twist on it. The only way I've tried to apply it is to uninstall the original one and install this one. No need for root access. I hope you like it...
Screenshots:
no longer available.
This my latest and final one. It is the same type of skin as the one above, but this one replaces the metal skin.

It's a bin file can't install...

I'm new...what can I say, I will fix it now.
Updated, its a go now. Sorry for the derail.
Nice dude looks good. Not a big skull fan but good work.

Well its the colors more than the skull I was going for.
If anyone has suggestions of what they would like to see, let me know.
I can't get this to work at all on liquid 3.0 for the thunderbolt... That's the only snag I've found so far.
Edit: moved updated skin to first post.
I can't install it on my HTC Desire with CM7.1. Handcent is up to date. After the install failed I resigned the apk and tried again but still no luck. Any ideas?
I had problems with liquid for the thunderbolt, and also with a few other roms. I haven't changed anything and it works on bamf forever. I'm not sure what keeps it from installing on certain roms. I tried adb push and that didn't work either. I'm not very well versed in system operations. I wish I had a definitive answer.
I tried a few more times (resigning, repacking and resigning, repacking and optimizing and resigning etc.) but still no luck. Maybe it's because of my ROM (CM7.1) or the Handcent version (3.9.9.1) but there are problems even with the original handcent skins from the market (I tried the Halloween skins). They install but I can't select them in the handcent app.
I also tried to mod the handcent apk but even stranger things are happening there: it installs without any issues but when I open it it crashes. No FC warning or something but it simply closes right away.
I'll keep trying so maybe someday we can all enjoy various skins for handcent.
Thanks for the effort. It only worked on certain roms for me. My friends with unrooted phones didn't have any trouble, so unfortunately I think it just wont work for everyone. I am making another one, but I wont be able to put up any screenshots.
Okay... I changed one more... It will be my last one because I get bored quickly of any one thing. I'll put it in the first post.

You need tablet talk to reply to messages via keyboard. You can sideload any keyboard or install via aroma when installing null_
More info for all of that is available in various threads here
