Newbie lost my Root - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I need some help I think I really messed up. I updated my HTC Hero with the new sprint 2.1 ROM a few days ago an HTC update popped up and with out thinking I installed it. I now cannot root my phone.
I have tried (GUIDE How to Root Sprint 2.1 Release for CDMA Hero) here in the XDA site with no luck does anyone have any other suggestions on how I can root my phone again.

Run the Offical 2.1 RUU again, and it will remove the 2nd upate. Then you can root per the Guide to Root Spring 2.1 Relase by Regaw.

tried it with no luck

i've only rooted 1.5 the old manual way.

If you ran the most recent RUU from the sprint site, it is already patched against root. You have to run the older version.
Go to: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694572
Scroll down to Regaw's second post and click on the link that says, "My Personal One I used for testing"
Run THAT Ruu.......THEN proceed to root via his instructions at the beginning of the post.
Good Luck.
P.S. Your software number must be 2.27.651.5
If it has a .6 at the end, you can't root

I'm in the same boat, you can't Finn the .5 ruu over .6 can you?
-------------------------------------
Sent via the XDA Tapatalk App

Try it if it does not work in the phone os shutdown the phone and power it on with home and down pressed and select fastboot and run the ruu again. if it dosen't work i think your sol but i think it works otherwise we would have an uprise of i bought my phone at best buy, radioshack, or sprint and they updated it before they gave it to me.

Phone keeps downloading OTA updates -- using lots of Bandwidth

I got message from tmobile saying I had used over 10GB this month, which seemed not right to me.
Looking at my bandwidth usage on tmobile's site I saw lots of 40 MB downloads. So I ran tcpdump on the phone for a while and it looks like maybe my phone keeps downloading an update several times a day from google?
There is a GET /updates/signed-kila-ota-150275.53dde3 to IP of 74.125.47.101 .
I am using a JF build: 1.5 CRB 21 147201 test-keys.
Anyone know why this is happening if what I think is happening is in fact happening Or how I might stop it?
Also, I didn't delete the oacerts or cacerts files:
# ./bash
bash-4.0# cd /system/etc/security/
bash-4.0# ls -l
-rw-r--r-- 1 0 0 47159 Aug 1 2008 cacerts.bks
-rw-r--r-- 1 0 0 1107 Aug 1 2008 otacerts.zip
You could try 1 of 3 of JF's solutions:
1. delete the otacerts.zip file manually. The file is at /system/etc/security/otacerts.zip But keep in mind if you use this method your phone will continuously re-down the OTA and try to verify it, which is bad on your bandwidth usage and your battery life
2. Replace /system/build.prop on your phone with the one from the ADP1 version of JFv1.51
3. chmod 000 the OTA file in /cache (unconfirmed solution, but is likely to work)

There must be another exploit in the package - try it (in my case psneuter was killed by AV guard immediately after unzipping package, so I had to use a second one).

May sound crazy but I thought my root didn't take using one click. No apps that require root would work. All I did was reboot my tab and everything was fine. Took me a few hrs but a simple reboot did the trick.

[How To] Temp Root

I take no credit for this, but I tried this out and was able to achieve temp-root.
Just though I'd post it till someone is able to figure out perm root. All thanks should go to Revolutionary
Hello!
We would like to announce the public availability of the root exploit we use in Revolutionary, named zergRush.
This local root exploit should be Android-wide, across Froyo (2.2) and Gingerbread (2.3). However, this will not work on Android Honeycomb and up (3.0+).
Simultaneously, we're also releasing source code for this root exploit through our github.
The binary is available from here: zergRush binary.
The exploit source is available here: Revolutionary GitHub.
Usage:
You will need adb shell to execute this exploit. We need shell permissions.
Push the binary onto /data/local/ and execute these commands in a shell:
Code:
$ chmod 755 /data/local/zergRush
$ /data/local/zergRush
The resulting output should look something like this:
Code:
[**] Zerg rush - Android 2.2/2.3 local root
[**] (C) 2011 Revolutionary. All rights reserved.
[**] Parts of code from Gingerbreak, (C) 2010-2011 The Android Exploid Crew.

Welp, with temp root, you can kill bloatware now.
I can't wait to pick one of these bad boys up, I've wanted an HTC phone for the longest time, and with LTE, it makes it that much more desirable.
Thanks for posting this. I'm happy we have a forum so soon.

Get one of the bloatware freezers from the Market after you have temproot and SU put on the phone than you can freeze the bloatware rather than out right removing them.. The Reason to freeze them first is in case they cause FC's for some unknown reason you can unfreeze them or just reboot the phone. I mean once we have full root and all that stuff and can backup the Stock OS than removing the Apps should be no issue as you can just restore your backup but until then I would suggest doing the Freeze method. I hope HTC Left the bootloader unlocked, that would be nice for a change. Although knowing AT&T they probably made them Lock it. Also awesome to see that we already got our own spot for our awesome device phone. Looking forward to some good Roms.

If nobody gets around to it before I get my phone in the mail, I'll see if I can put one together. A step-by-step would probably help a lot of people. The rooting method seems a lot like what I used on my Incredible S (actually, easier, since the IncS had a locked bootloader that couldn't be unlocked at htcdev.com!). Unfortunately, I ordered mine online so I could get the discount and get the white version, so I have to wait for them to ship it to me.
I tried to unlock my Vivid at the htcdev site and unfortunately it doesn't seem to work. Maybe we'll have to wait a bit until it's supported.

Love this Phone, I am going to wait for Root
I am having issues getting to Fastboot. Keeps saying win whatever not installed even though I got look in platform-tools and its sitting right there. Hmm I haven't updated in awhile, could that be it? Yea wow I didn't realize how far behind until I started update holy god lol that's what I get for not updating it within the past 3-4 months.

Not sure if others have tried, but I'm getting the dreaded CID not allowed (basically means carrier not allowing it) error...might just have to wait for someone to figure out the exploit to get it unlocked for perm-root
Either that or wait for HTC to come out for an actual Unlock for the device.
CID locked
Same for me. Oh, well.
Standing by...
I can't seem do get it to work, I must be doing something wrong.
I get through all the steps, get the root shell (#), and the ID comes back as 0 (root). That's all good.
I then install Superuser in the Market, but none of the apps I try to use can seem to get root access. They can't find an SU binary. Why would superuser install and run but there be no su binary? Any ideas on what to do?

What is a G11? Are you sure you are posting this in the correct forum?
For a HTC Incredible S, you need to get a stock RUU file and use that to flash back to a basic stock ROM and see if GPS will work.

Have you tried vision_wipe_efs? You can download the file from this link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044992
Just extract the executable from the zip, put it in your /tmp/, "chmod 777" this file and execute it. Basically it backup the mmcblk0p13 and mmcblk0p14 partitions and wipe them. Then reboot your phone to see if GPS works again.

Anyway to reverse Kit-Kat update?

So I updated my HTC One to Kit Kat about a week ago thinking that it would make some improvement to my user experience, but so far I don't like it. Things seem a bit glitchy now when they weren't before, especially with things like the GUI. I also don't like some of the changes they made, such as how texts show up on the lockscreen now and the grey battery indicator...and I don't really care much for some of the minor new features.
So I was wondering whether it's at all possible to "reverse" the update to the version just before they released and pushed out the Kit Kat update... I realize that I'll probably have to re-flash the stock rom in order to do so, but I'm willing to do it if at all possible. The phone is completely stock, no root and no modifications whatsoever.
If you root, s-off, and flash an aftermarket recovery you can flash the stock Rom. If you're going to go thru all the trouble to do this I personally would NOT run an ota to become stock again. You can achieve that by flashing a Rom and be 80% or more stock. To get back fully stock you need to find the original ota and run it after doing the other things I listed above. Search here and you'll find out how to do all of these steps.

Thanks for your reply but these steps require you to be s-off and temp root,I have a completely stock 4.4.2 rom with locked bootloader and hboot 1.56.0000.Now I need to temp root,s-off so I can downgrade the rom to an unlockable rom(sim unlock).
I understand it's possible to sim unlock the sprint htc one.
Question is,how can I gain temp root and s-off so I can downgrade to 4.3 and sim unlock the phone, thnx.

... your best bet is to use feirewater s-off method which also has temp root. get s-off, downgrade and then go for sim unlock :victory: ...

well I did try firewater but I always get this "error, run firewater as root. su or FU", after running the last command which is /data/local/tmp/firewater.
Am I doing anything wrong?

... It seems firewater is not getting root permissions. When you run firewater again, never let the screen sleep and grant permission whenever it asks (not sure but can ask multiple times) ...

I'm pretty sure the temp root method does not work on Sprint devices.
I guess the only option for me now is to wait untill a proper root exploit is found.
thank you guys for your support

There has only been 1 exploit in recent years that did not require your bootloader to be unlocked beforehand...so your "proper root exploit" most likely won't happen.

The only way to downgrade is to go through the process of unlocking bootloader, root, s-off, you can do whatever you want from there...

... Brother either we are not able to make you understand or you are not willing to grasp it. The only way to sim unlock is to downgrade, to downgrade you need s-off, for s-off you need root, for root you need custom recovery, for custom recovery you need unlocked bootloader, and all starts from here. I hope this helps you clear any doubts if you still have them ...
