Does anyone have any info on how to root an alltel hero. It comes with android 2.1 build number 2.33.556.1? I have tried all non-sprint cdma rooting methods but none of them work.
I have tried asking the same thing in various places and it seems to fall on deaf ears unfortunately. I am even willing to help if someone had anything they wanted me to try. I guess we'll have to wait until Sprint gets an update that locks out the downgrade loophole they are using now so they will be forced to look for another kernel exploit.
In the meantime, stay away from any future ota updates that might patch holes that haven't been found yet.

I would also be willing to donate to anyone succesful in rooting the Alltel Hero!!!
I also would like to see the Alltel Hero rooted, and would be willing to help sponsor a reward for doing so. It is one big difference, under Windows Mobile it was so easy to just flash another rom, but with Android you have to get rooted before you can do much of anything.

I've also tried every available method but none of which were Alltel specific to no avail. Never can get super user. Any help to root Alltel hero would be phenomenal. Sure could use carrier specific sticky. Carlsbad New Mexico at&t bought our Alltel but no changes as of yet.

I have been searching all week and can find no info on anyone having successfully rooted the Sprint (CDMA) Hero.
I'm sorry to post here but it seems to be the most active android modder board, has any Dev managed to acquire a CDMA hero and is any Dev attempting to root it?
Is this just wishful thinking on my part? I sincerely hope not!
After a week playing with I can say it blows the G1 away! Battery life, speaker quality, form factor, etc, far and away a better more reliable device.
A word of caution to anyone going from the TMobile G1 to the Sprint Hero... DO NOT ATTEMPT TO BACK UP YOUR APPS OR DATA ON THE G1 & THEN RESTORE THEM ON YOUR HERO! YOU WILL LOOSE NETWORK CONNECTION TO SPRINT! I suspect that apps & data downloaded & used thru the TMobile network on your G1 are unable to use a CDMA connection and attempt to modify your system to access the TMobile network. This breaks connectivity and only a wipe has fixed it (hard wipe using the ##786# menu + your individual reset code from Sprint). Your best hope is to re-download your apps. The good news is your download history should show most of your apps and allow you to download them from your CDMA Hero.
Moderators, my sincere apologies if you feel I posted in the wrong forum. I felt it best to reach the active modders I am aware of and offer some transfer advice for those making the switch.
Thanks all,
-Salamandar

you're probably in the right forum, since rooting is development. but i do think you should check out the hero forum just in case there's stuff about the Sprint Hero
I dont know much about it but maybe someone can clarify things...now i know cdma is what sprint, verizon, metro, cricket, etc use. Is cdma a hardware type thing or is it a network type thing? And can the sprint hero img be ported and modified to the g1 and somehow allowing it to be flashed to a metro/cricket type service?? Just questions im curious about...
thanks for the response, I agree and posted a different post related only to the Sprint Hero on that forum (hopefully i did not abuse the forum rules, if I did, I understand if a Dev locks or deletes one).

I may be wrong about this but to my knowledge, CDMA is a Network as well as Hardware and software type of thing. When Android was developed it was not capable of running on a CDMA network, one of many things added when Cupcake (firmware 1.5) was relased. CDMA is a network type so GSM only devices will not work on it and as far as I can tell devices built for CDMA are built specifically for that. There is some sort of hardware in there that allows the device to connect to the CDMA network that GSM only devices dont have. (I may be wrong about this though, I also believe it has to do with the radio).
Finally, I dont know what metro or cricket is and I also didn't know that the G1 was on those networks but if it is, I would assume that if those are CDMA networks its not the same G1 that was released on TMO and differers internally in that it can function on a CDMA network. If that is the case then its probably possible. If not then no.
Dont quote me on any of this. I'm not saying this from an experts point of view just from what I have concluded based on what I know about network types, devices and Android.

CDMA is hardware AND network... not software.

if u had used astro to back up your apps and install them one bye one u would not have had a problem
Thank you superg05 that's a good idea.

it is now. but originally it was only built for GSM... only T-Mobile's GSM most likely lol
this is really dumb but has some tried one click root yet? or will that mess up the recovery image leading to a possible brick. becase its running 1.5 not 1.6 right?
I one click rooted my friends g1 the other day and it works fairly well. Don't think you can use the gsm hero root method to root a cdma hero.
Just fyi attempted to root the Sprint Hero using the one click method, but was unsucessful. I couldn't seem to back up the stock image. Any advice?

it would probably be best to wait till more people get their hands on the sprint hero. the more people that get their hands on it, the faster way a rooting method that works will be found
wondering if anyone has heard anything on anytype of rooting for the telus motorola milestone. its hard to search for due to the euro milestone out there that always pops up, apparently the bootloader is encrypted not allowing anything not signed by them digitally
ive gotten 2.1 gallery on the phone but not MT so i use the stock 2.0.1 media gallery, and i have launcher2 running perfectly. wanting to get into root to overclock and get rid of the white top bar!
on that note, its an amazing phone if anyone is looking at getting it or already have it, i used 2.1 on my dream and its nice to be on this fast phone with fully working eclair! i reverted back to 1.6 cm 4.2.14.1 ? newest cm + blue haze addon, i can still have fun with my dream but i want to have the same fun on my milestone!
If a dev has the phone then it will most likely get root but I wasn't even aware you guys were getting the GSM Milestone. Don't worry you should visit Modaco's site they have like every android phone there.

motorola needs to release the damn digital signing codes so dev's can do their magic with the phone!
Hi,
This is a stab in the dark, but my attempt to contribute to the good work been done by many others in rooting and flashing the tattoo, but I'm going to need some pointers.
I foolishly told the wife to buy a HTC Tattoo that was locked to Orange UK thinking, hey it'll be a piece of p!ss to unlock. That definitely isn't the case. Now I've rooted the device using the various things on the forum, the contributors are vast, so not enough space to mention them all here.
I plan tonight to flash using the AzusaRom, but as it's been pointed out on a number of occassions this doesn't unlock the phone from the CID check. I've also tried one of those turbosims without joy, so I thought I'd start taking a very tenative look around the tattoo to see if I'm able to understand what's going on a bit more.
I was hoping for a little guidance that's all. I'm assuming at some level there's a process spawned which at boot says check this SIM card? One approach I guess will be to understand what that process is and disable it? Although from what I gather the issue is to do with the version of the radio rom and the thing we really need to do is hack and flash the radio rom?
I'm probably putting myself out there for some ridicule, but this problem seems to be a recurring theme and perhaps a consolidated thread might be useful for everyone in the same boat.
So anyone wishing to join the party please do.

Works perfectly in my Orange Tattoo and I running my O2 SIM no problems whatsoever. We would all love a hacked radio rom but me thinks it not that simple.
I would have thought that on a rooted phone if we flashed the HTC rom 1.67.405.6 then this would write the generic radio rom to the phone but I guess it doesn't, there must be some other protection somewhere.
I'm going to try after my test in school and give this a shot as I'm unrooted and on 2.1. However not being familiar with the nexus root method does anyone think that the incredible root method just simply unlock the bootloader anyway? Has anyone tried the incredible root method on their phones yet?
I dont think the root method will have any bearing on the N1 due to the Incredible being CDMA and the Nexus being GSM.
Im not totally positive, but if I remember back When us CDMA Hero users were trying to achieve root the GSM way was unable to get us there.
If im wrong let me know, dont wanna spread around false info.
Oh I didn't know about that. I guess we won't know until someone tries. I want to root anyway and if it does work and unlocks my bootloader.. oh well I tried. It's a busy week so i didn't want to waste my time, but I wanted to try before the official 2.2 update comes out just in case it doesn't work for 2.2.
This is actually a really good idea, think this could work. Don't see how CDMA/GSM factors in here....
Rooting =/= unlocking the bootloader.
Rooting == getting root privileges in OS.
If achievable, it will get you root permissions in OS. It might not give you write access to system partitions, and might not allow you to flash custom images.
The difference between GSM and CDMA is that they're sporting different Snapdragons, thus running different baseband builds, a bug in one doesn't say anything about the other.
Anyway, please update, how did it go - interesting
Tried this for 3 hours yesterday w/ a dev from XDA. He's still working towards it, but its a timing issue. It has to be within a half second timespan with no way of telling when that is. I ended up just breaking my bootloader after I realized I'd rather have root then have us keep trying all day...
HTC gives us this super elegant solution, and you boneheads still try to find a different less effective way.

It doesn't feel as much like hacking if you're doing it the way they want you to. Totally defeats the point.
:roll eyes:
Sorry if this has been asked and talked about before but haven't been able to find anything. I have contacted both att and samsung on the upgrade/update for the att us Captivate. I have contacted att twice and samsung 1 time. It seems that both times att responded they had to contact samsung. So i'm beging to think the us update is all samsung. I'm sure this is old news but now to my question. And maybe someone can answer it. How big of a diffrence is there between the US and Canada phones? What i'm not understanding is how one has the update and the other doesn't if there isn't any diffrence. My thought is maybe with alot of problems that i have heard about with Rogers upgrade that samsung is trying to weed out problems before releasing to us. This last email i got back from ATT sounds like they don't have a clue on whats going on. but the one from Samsung was sure of the update just couldn't give a time frame. Thanks for reading and again am sorry if this has been talked about before, also hope i'm posting it in the right place.
I live in canada, updated to froyo didnt experience any problems aside from the browser memory leak issue... but thats it

Samsungs roll in the update is pretty much over they did their part and sent working code to at&t.from my understanding at&t is simple playing the blame game.
I am not surprised that they seem to know nothing.its a big company with a large number of devices they can't know all the details about all of them. We well know when we know.I don't expect it for another month or so. not like we need it anyway with all of the great roms out there
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Each has its own carrier specific customization to do. For example, with Rogers 2.2, wi-fi tether is linked to a Rogers specific apk so that it can check your Rogers account (to make sure you paid for tethering) before it let you do it.
Since AT&T won't have official Android Mobile HotSpot tethering out until Feb 13, it makes sense that Captivate won't see 2.2 update until after that (so that it can contain AT&T specific tethering check app).
So, it is not as simply as who to blame. Each carrier has different demands and feature request. Samsung has to implement those demanded features then release to carrier for testing.
Thanks...
Answered a few things i had questions on. I know theres a bunch of roms out and good things can happen but i'm also aware of the bad things with modin the phone with custom roms. I did my motorola backflip with sorta no problems but when i did run into problems it was easy enuf to reflash it sounds like theres alot more to flashing a rom to it then just rooting and flashing. So think i will wait a bit longer. If it comes down to things will try my hand at the roms.
