Should I RUU? (replacing mah Hero) - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm getting a replacement Hero either Monday or Tuesday (for dust under screen). The phone's already been ordered and such, but should I RUU before taking my current one to the store? (or should I just wipe it through recovery?)
----
Side question, can I use a nandroid from my current Hero to my new Hero?
(Just wondering before I delete 'em all )

RUU would be best

Should I do the test RUU? Or the one on the sprint website?

do the official RUU, just in case the guys at the store are asses since rooting and "technically" void the warranty and they could refuse your new phonw even though the dust is a separate issue

Also, yes, you can take a nandroid off of your phone, copy it to your computer, and copy it back to the /sdcard/nandroid folder of your new phone. Taking your SD and putting it in the new phone is easier though.

Thanks! I remember hearing that nandroids were specific to a particular device (like, an individual phone)...

I couldn't get the RUU to work, so I ended up just wiping and bringing it back. It was fine. The guy was about to go copy my contacts over, but I told him I had it all wiped off, and he said it made his job easier. So....

I thought that those Htc Dev phones were aready hardware unlocked?
Well, I sorta installed the RC27 in order to install cyanogenmod....But this not the point!I have lots of important content that I can't afford to lose!So I'm looking for a way to restore my phone back to normal!

Doesnt google sync your contacts/email/etc, can you get into bootloader or fastboot
Yes ADP's are factory rooted, so downgrading to RC27 was a little pointless.
Anywho your phone's dead. Your "important content" is gone, that's the risk you take when you flash your device.
Move along children, nothing to see here.
Well then, thanks for you fast replies, but I have one last question. Is there any way to restore it by modifying the hardware?Replacing something etc.?

Check craigslist for any HTC Dream, and swap the motherboard and other necessary guts with yours. You can usually find G1's for around $25 with a cracked screen. Which you don't need the screen, so that doesn't matter.
Yeah motherboard replacement doesn't look too tricky. Search for the thread on how to recovery from a brick in the development section, it has a step by step guide with pictures.

That's not really going to help him recover the data on his flash though.
if you have nandroid backups, your data will still be recoverable. if not, your out of luck

Help me go back to stock rom

I'm returning the phone and I had it rooted with Fresh 1.0 on it.
I tried flashing the 1.29 RUU but its giving me a "ERROR[140]: BOOTLOADER VERSION ERROR"
I don't know what to do now.
I created an update.zip style update that was modeled after the RUU. However a few days later I realized that I didn't create the proper permissions for the /data folder, leaving it unwriteable from adb. If you are just returning your phone then it will work fine for you. However you will still need to manually push the old recovery image back.
PM me if you want the update.zip.
Or if you feel like you can pull it off you can try the goldcard method to remove the update that Sprint put on there to prevent you from using the RUU.

do u really have to reflash it to stock?i just exchanged 2 of my htc heroes 1 was rooted and flashed to fresh 1.0 and looked nothing like the original, the other one was just rooted. they replaced both of them very fast with no problems, but ive only had the phone a week, and it was obvious that it was a manufacturers defect. just wanna know a definite answer so i know in the future.
Edit- also the employee who was exchanging my phones for new ones was really nice, she let me keep my charger my other battery and my other sd card. she said they were just going to ship them back anyway. so i returned my phones for defect and got 2 extra sd cards, chargers, and batterys. ive always had good luck with sprint lol.

The ROM Update Utility cannot update your Android phone.

A friend actually wants to buy it now and I wanted to put it back to stock. If I can't get this done, I may have to go back to bestbuy and try to get them to exchange one for me.
I never imagined that getting it back to stock would be so difficult.
I nandroid'd back to my stock shipped state. Is there any problem with leaving it rooted?

[Q] Advice on phone set-up

Hi everybody
Ive had my first HTC phone for a few weeks. Im running 2.3.3 with hboot 1.16. I have rooted the phone and bootloader unlock with HTCdev, therefore I am still S-ON. Running cyanogenmod 7.1.
I have a few questions regarding my device which hopefully you can help me with:
1.(when final versions are released etc) Because cyanogenmod 9 is be based on ICS, can I actually just install cyanogenmod 9 like I did with 7.1? or would I have to somehow upgrade my stock rom to ICS and then install cyan 9? Do I ever have to update clockworkmod?
2.Theres a lot of talk about gold golds when I look on forums especially when people have certain things wrong with there phone. Is it worth me making one just incase something goes wrong with my phone? Or can this not be done, im not actually 100% sure about these tbh.
3.Are there anyways to speed up the phone like apps etc. im thinking about moving all my apps to the sd card as apparently this helps? I also have SD maid pro installed to help clean it up etc I run that once a week. Any other apps that are useful?
4.Is it worth me getting s-off by downgrading my 1.16 to 1.13?
5.With iphone I ran a program called ultrasnow to carrier unlock my phone so I could but any simcard into my phone and it would work. Can this be done with HTC? Im currently locked on optus.
Sorry for the questions. Ive just came from having an iphone for the past 4 years, so all of the HTC stuff is very new to me. But hopefully one day ill be able to help people when they ask questions like I have done today. I will give thanks etc to answers.
Thank you for your time on helping

You should be able to just flash the cm9 rom same as cm7. I'm sure if there was any special requirements they will be stated in the thread when it arrives to our phone.

A goldcard is used for flashing a stock rom from a different carrier. Not much point making one until its necessary

I think moving apps to the sdcard may actually decrease performance as the internal phone memory is faster than sdcard. Unless you have Installed apps to near the phones capacity (which you may have being a new user ) I think its best to leave them where they are.
A good way to increase the phones performance would be to overclock or install a more efficient kernel. When I was running cm7 on my phone I found Enki v0-alpha to be awesome.

I'm unaware of any unlock method for this phone on gingerbread. Are you prepaid or plan? Prepaid can get free unlock code if you recharge an accumulated $80 (or $90 I cant recall exactly)
Thanks for the reply. ahh im pretty good with my apps tbh ive pretty much just downloaded the ones i used on my iphone on a daily basis except the ones that are only available in england (im travelling atm).
My phones is ok with phonecalls and sms, but its not very often i have full reception. A lot of the time when i am holding my phone it will go down to 0 bars. Its in an otter box communter case as well. Would different radio's be able to fix this issue? If i was to s-off obviously. And thanks for the kernal info, ill have a look into them. Not that i understand them atm but a bit of research should help.
And when i top up on the 9th i will be on $90 so i will go into optus and see about getting it unlocked.
Thanks for your help
About sim unlocking, I went to ebay and found a seller who pays the hefty fee for access to all unlock codes for different phones, by carrier. The unlock code is associated with the "EMEI" number of your specific phone.
It cost me about $20. My phone will accept any sim card fine. (Won't connect with a few carriers that use unique radio frequencies.)
My phone originally came from Bell, I got it used, and the above method let me put my Fido simcard into it.
Edit: oh, but if you get it free, oh well.
sent from my Android via xda
yeah i just wanted to know if i could do it in a matter of seconds like i can with my iphone. Not that i need it atm, but nice to have it done for when i need it. Thanks anyway !
speaking of kernals, if i was to flash a customer kernal. In order to get back to the original kernal would i have to reinstall the ROM or is there a way to delete it as so to speak?

Inside your rom's zip file, there's a boot.img. This is the kernel. You can flash it in fastboot
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
if i reflash the boot.img like i did when i initially installed cyanogen, wont my rom go back to how it was when i first installed it? Meaning i have to re-install all my apps etc etc. probs a noob question tbh, but ive never had to do anything like this yet.

[Q] Tried to get my One back to Stock, gone wrong somehwere

Hi, recently the screen broke on my 2 week old HTC One.
Amazon were kind enough to send me a new one, but I had modded the hell out of the first one (using various online tutorials to root and then ROM it), and now have the need to return it.
So I followed various tutorials to try and restore it back to 100% stock. (Didn't bother making it "Locked" rather than "Unlocked").
What I did was I used the HTC One All-In-One Toolkit, and "relocked bootloader". I then tried to flash the RUU, all went well, but when I try to start it up after, it gives a blank black screen. However, after giving it a while, holding the power button, or pressing the back button sometimes results in a vibration, so I'm presuming that it is starting, but not displaying anything. I was hoping that my phone would come up in windows so I could re-flash twrp and flash Sense that way, but it does not appear.
I tried factory resetting in this state, but when I try boot it up after that, a logo comes up which is a phone, with 2 green arrows forming a circle inside it, then a green arrow pointing down inside that.
Also, flashing twrp.img seems to go well, but when select "recovery", nothing happens, it just seems to boot up normally.
I am now at a loss of ideas, as this process was suggested by all the sources I could find, and it works perfectly for them, see no reason for it not to for me.
If anyone has any idea how to fix this, please, please respond as quickly as possible, it has to be with Amazon by the 4th, and I have no clue what to do!
Thanks,
-Accudio

No, I'm S-ON, when I first did it I was a bit of a noob, and none of the tutorials I followed said anything about S-ON/S-OFF. Only just found out about it when researching how to put it back. :/
You can't access recovery because your phone is locked, so first off you need to unlock again your phone

adb commands work in recovery too.
either use "adp push rom.zip /sdcard/" or use the sideload method
Thanks a lot guys, you've been a great help! 2 more questions for you if you don't mind:
1. The ROM I found doesn't seem to work properly, so have you got any ideas of ROMs of Sense 5, no root, so it will appear to amazon that it is stock, even if it isn't exactly, or do you know where I can get an RUU and how to flash it to get my phone back to exactly stock?
2. This won't be a big deal, but how could I achieve S-OFF to revert my HTC recovery to say "Locked" rather than "Tampered" and "Relocked"
If they aren't possible, no big deal, just would be nice if I can. Again, thanks a ton, you've saved my neck! xD
EDIT: I am downloading a different ROM to try, so hopefully that will work better.

1. Just download a stock odexed rom from the development section. There are many to choose from.
OR
Pick a RUU from here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=39588860
2. Use this link to do that. Then read the instructions on how to reset the flags.
Did amazon really replace your broken phone for free? Thats what I call customer service. Too bad I bought mine from ATT.
THIRD OPTION:

Yeah, I dropped it onto my carpet and the screen cracked pretty majorly, so I contacted HTC pretty annoyed (as you can expect), and they said that I must have had a dodgy model for it to have broken so easily. Amazon was reluctant but because I had HTC's word they sent me a free replacement.

You should be able to unlock your bootloader again with the unlockcode.
If I'm not mistaken, in order to flash a RUU you need to:
- Flash stock recovery.img through bootloader+fastboot
- Flash stock boot.img through bootloader+fastboot
RUU should flash now whether bootloader is locked, unlocked or relocked.

[Q] Do I HAVE to unroot my phone when giving it back to Sprint??

Hello guys. I switched to AT&T today because I am seriously out of Sprint coverage nowadays. I am expecting to get a bill for my m8 since I left before I had paid off my phone. When sending back my phone, is it neccessary to unroot, flash stock recovery, relock, etc?
I changed my CID number in order to remove the tampered signal, I think. So I have no idea which stock nandroid backup to download here. Also, half the links for unrooting instructions here are dead, most importantly the file needed for flashing to unroot. So basically, this is just a headache and I dont want to deal with it.
I sent sprint a rooted HTC EVO 4G back when I had broken the screen and they sent me another for insurance purposes. They never said anything.
So what should I do? Aren't they just going to put a new shell on it and make it look new and sell it to someone?

I guess that would depend on who receives it at the return center. Chances are that if they plan on resale they will wipe everything and run an RUU or the complete reset version of it if there is one (which most of us wish there was and we could get our hands on)
If that is the case you can always run the latest RUU on your own before sending it in.
