Hi everybody
Ive had my first HTC phone for a few weeks. Im running 2.3.3 with hboot 1.16. I have rooted the phone and bootloader unlock with HTCdev, therefore I am still S-ON. Running cyanogenmod 7.1.
I have a few questions regarding my device which hopefully you can help me with:
1.(when final versions are released etc) Because cyanogenmod 9 is be based on ICS, can I actually just install cyanogenmod 9 like I did with 7.1? or would I have to somehow upgrade my stock rom to ICS and then install cyan 9? Do I ever have to update clockworkmod?
2.Theres a lot of talk about gold golds when I look on forums especially when people have certain things wrong with there phone. Is it worth me making one just incase something goes wrong with my phone? Or can this not be done, im not actually 100% sure about these tbh.
3.Are there anyways to speed up the phone like apps etc. im thinking about moving all my apps to the sd card as apparently this helps? I also have SD maid pro installed to help clean it up etc I run that once a week. Any other apps that are useful?
4.Is it worth me getting s-off by downgrading my 1.16 to 1.13?
5.With iphone I ran a program called ultrasnow to carrier unlock my phone so I could but any simcard into my phone and it would work. Can this be done with HTC? Im currently locked on optus.
Sorry for the questions. Ive just came from having an iphone for the past 4 years, so all of the HTC stuff is very new to me. But hopefully one day ill be able to help people when they ask questions like I have done today. I will give thanks etc to answers.
Thank you for your time on helping

You should be able to just flash the cm9 rom same as cm7. I'm sure if there was any special requirements they will be stated in the thread when it arrives to our phone.

A goldcard is used for flashing a stock rom from a different carrier. Not much point making one until its necessary

I think moving apps to the sdcard may actually decrease performance as the internal phone memory is faster than sdcard. Unless you have Installed apps to near the phones capacity (which you may have being a new user ) I think its best to leave them where they are.
A good way to increase the phones performance would be to overclock or install a more efficient kernel. When I was running cm7 on my phone I found Enki v0-alpha to be awesome.

If you are happy with how your phone performs in calls and sms I wouldn't bother getting s-off

I'm unaware of any unlock method for this phone on gingerbread. Are you prepaid or plan? Prepaid can get free unlock code if you recharge an accumulated $80 (or $90 I cant recall exactly)
Thanks for the reply. ahh im pretty good with my apps tbh ive pretty much just downloaded the ones i used on my iphone on a daily basis except the ones that are only available in england (im travelling atm).
My phones is ok with phonecalls and sms, but its not very often i have full reception. A lot of the time when i am holding my phone it will go down to 0 bars. Its in an otter box communter case as well. Would different radio's be able to fix this issue? If i was to s-off obviously. And thanks for the kernal info, ill have a look into them. Not that i understand them atm but a bit of research should help.
And when i top up on the 9th i will be on $90 so i will go into optus and see about getting it unlocked.
Thanks for your help
About sim unlocking, I went to ebay and found a seller who pays the hefty fee for access to all unlock codes for different phones, by carrier. The unlock code is associated with the "EMEI" number of your specific phone.
It cost me about $20. My phone will accept any sim card fine. (Won't connect with a few carriers that use unique radio frequencies.)
My phone originally came from Bell, I got it used, and the above method let me put my Fido simcard into it.
Edit: oh, but if you get it free, oh well.
sent from my Android via xda
yeah i just wanted to know if i could do it in a matter of seconds like i can with my iphone. Not that i need it atm, but nice to have it done for when i need it. Thanks anyway !
speaking of kernals, if i was to flash a customer kernal. In order to get back to the original kernal would i have to reinstall the ROM or is there a way to delete it as so to speak?

Inside your rom's zip file, there's a boot.img. This is the kernel. You can flash it in fastboot
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
if i reflash the boot.img like i did when i initially installed cyanogen, wont my rom go back to how it was when i first installed it? Meaning i have to re-install all my apps etc etc. probs a noob question tbh, but ive never had to do anything like this yet.

I want an application of some sort that will allow me to decide which apps can connect to the internet and which cant. As i would like to block some apps from accessing the internet, unless i allow them to? any ideas?

i dont have a data plan now so i cant activate the phone and i cant use adb cause its not working on win7 for me..is there anyway i can just flash spl and radio and skip the recovery image? I tried someones sim but it just says error when i try to register.
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.. or Confirm this is correct. but..
If you're on an official rom you're out of luck, but if you can update to an ADP rom no login will be required. It's not a SPL or radio issue, purely rom based.

What phone are you using on what network? Was the other person's sim card on the same network? did they have an android data plan?
ADP means Android Developer Phone.

Oh both sims were tmobile US, and the other phone was a moto zn5 so it wasnt a g1 plan.
So I'm *assuming* you're on a G1. You basically have three choices, either goto a t-mobile store and beg one of their techs to let ya use their data to register, find someone else with a g1+data and ask to use their sim card or go adp.
The downside of going with an adp rom is you'll loose the t-mobile branded stuff like tmo ringtones, the myfaves app, ?youtube? (not sure on this one, you should do some reading first or hope someone else chips in).
If you really need your phone now, and are able to install custom roms the adp version of donut can be found --here-- Note: I run the official roms so am not too well versed in ADP vs. AOSP+ADP but it looks like you may actually want the latter(AOSP+ADP)

can i rename the recovery image to update.zip the load it in recovery mode?
No, no renaming the recovery image.
Ok, so let me get this straight. You unrooted a rooted phone, to install the official cupcake so you could "one touch" root it which installs a custom recovery image @ the same time?
this is starting to hurt my head...

Gotcha, headaches gone but unfortunately it looks like your stuck. It appears this process *assumes* you have a data connection(for the login process) and without this most guides out there are going to be useless, especially at this point.
I'd say add data for a month or w/e then remove it if you must once done doing what you're doin... or go back to looking for someone with data that can help ya get logged in. Bout the only ways out I can forsee atm.. Wish I could be more help...

You can always do it the old-fashioned way... Just downgrade to RC29, login with WiFi. Then do the root process that way. Only takes 15min at most.

There's a way to bypass it with rooted ROMs, of which RC29 is one. You can. There's a whole guide on how to do it.
Soooo folks , my Baby has arrived yesterday and now i have following Question:
Anyone know how to root this shard? Same as Hero? .... I don´t think so...
Thx for Answers
how did u get it so fast. where did u buy it from?
I think rooting the Legend would be like for the Nexus One, because it's the first 2.1 OS to be rooted, anyway why would you root it if no dev made a ROM yet?
We will have certainly modded ROMs with fully working Live Wallpapers but give them a little time

Depends allways from your Provider, when is your Provider West-EU u can use Market without restriction....
If the Legend is not Rooted we can't install APK games and apps?
It's exciting to see the Legend finally released. But I'm waiting for the Desire
About the apps. I'm sure we can install any apk files on the Legend. As for the paid apps bought on the Hero, you can get the apk file from your Hero using Root Explorer. I have purchased one application and the apk file is located in /system/sd/app-private folder.
The problem here is that if the developer relases an update to the market you won't be able to update your app!!!
So I found my Apps in Hero in /data/app so i can install them to Legend... thats important for first time and later when Rooted then i will use Market...
Bootloader mode, may be helpful for anyone ....
Does Anyone has a solution for rootingthe phone and activate then Market Enabler... Here in Belgium we have the same problem...
is it possible to root it without reinstalling a new rom ?
thx
Yes, i mean it will be possible , we need to wait a bit ... i´m in contact with one dev that working already on the solution ...
Stupid question, but what does rooting does? Is it like gaining full admin rights? Also what is the market activation thing people talk about?

Rooting gives you access to functions that're normally shielded from the end-user. Yes, this means you can do more, but you should also be aware of the risks. First and foremost tampering with the software in the device will always void your warranty. Moreover if your machine somehow has vulnerabilities, and they're exploited, they'll not only have regular access but they'll have full admin access to your phone. It happened to the iPhone, which resulted in ransomware being installed on some iPhones (hacked ones where the terminal password wasn't changed by the owner upon rooting it). So it'll give you plenty of extra's, but do read up on what you're doing.
MarketEnabler is an app which allows you to set different regions for the market. Then you'll be able to download apps which might not be available in your region (developers can control in which regions they want to sell their apps, and some regions don't have paid apps yet).
I'm not worried about warranty. Besides you can always flash a official rom back right?
Checked up some more on rooting and it doesnt seem too usefull yet? Removing default apps you dont use and move the cache to SD card seems to be the most usefull at the moment. And maybe running apps from SD though that doesnt seem fail safe and google is working on that anyway right?
Sorry for the questions. I get plenty of experience with WiMo but this will be the first time I get a android phone so its kinda like having to learn things all over again
On WiMo its sooo each Just flash and find you .cab's and your good to go. About that, does android actually have some decent copy protection? or is it like wimo where you only need a .cab or the iPhone that also runs whatever you want after jailbreak?
When i look in the settings menu there's also an option accesibility only its shield of.
Does a root give me acces to this option?
I'm currently thinking of getting a Vodafone-branded Legend since it's much cheaper here in my region.
How are the chances of getting rid of the branding (it's software-only, just 2 links on the home screen and a boot animation) and to upload the original rom image to the phone? I want to have the latest updates on the phone when they're released by HTC...
Your going to need a hacked SPL to be able to change the boot image... and as this phone has just been released I'm guessing your chances are very slim at this point in time..
What i mean is to replace the complete ROM with the stock ROM from HTC.
What i've heard is that future updates will probably be released later for the branded phones, so i just want to have updates for the ROM as early as possible.
Most probably it's too early to make any assumptions here.

Well, for the Legend there aren't too much options yet, but for the Hero there's a ****storm of custom ROM's, from leaked 2.1 ROMs to AOSP (Android Open Source Project) vanilla Android builds ( means without HTC's modifications). So for me (not a developer), it's a matter of waiting 'til the device gets rooted and some custom ROMs start popping up. 'Til then: no, rooting won't do you much good .
hey guys sorry if this has been answered already but im new to the G1 side of the XDA forums (i got a nexus one, mostly there) and i bought a G1 months and months back off of ebay. at that time i never had an knowledge about rooting or any of that. i have my N1 rooted and i was curious and looked through my G1 unlocked and rooted (bought it that way) and it the about phone part under Model Number, it says "Android Dev Phone 1" now i looked online and these dev phones have a special design on the back and mines doesnt (could have switched back cover) and something about the market not being able to download "cool" things off the market even tho i had no issues downloading on this before. so is this really a dev phone or not really? if so, whats so special about a dev phone? *i have included a picture of the About Phone screen i took with my nexus one*
**well my original post asked if this is a dev phone. i got the answer that its not. but this rom, never heard of this one before. anyone got any clue? also when i downloaded Quick Boot and his the button to go into bootloader, i got a phone icon with a "!". any clues?**
anyone? im just curious
no not a dev phone. it says jesus freak for the kernal. the rom loaded could be a custom rom based off the original devphone rom.

You are NOT providing enough information to determine whether or not that is a DEV PHONE.
Specifically, you need to provide two pictures: FULL front, and FULL back. The data that happens to be on the device does NOT have anything to do with whether it is or is not a dev phone.
You can tell a dev phone because it has cool graphics on the back cover. You will also note that dev phones do NOT say "tmobile" on the front at the speaker.
What makes a dev phone SPECIAL (aside from the graphics) is the BOOTLOADER, which is unlocked for fastbooting custom system images.

probably one jesusfreke made? i wasn't really around when g1 first got rooted. i got the mytouch when it first came out and passed on the g1 so i can't really tell you, but that would be my guess. and if that's true, its a pretty damn old ROM.
It's this rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=475381
It's one of the oldest custom roms for the G1. The (!) Recovery is the stock recovery. Find Amon_Ra's 1.7.0 recovery and rename it to recovery.img and put it on your sdcard. Open terminal and type "su" then "flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img". From there update the radio to 2.22.23.02, flash danger SPL, and flash CM5.0.8.
thanks guys. i will update my G1 since its extremely slow n has very limited space for apps

nevermind i got it all to work. thanks a lot guys. i remember when i wanted to root my nexus one, i took about a month and a half to read on everything to make sure i get my facts straight n this time it only took me about 2 or 3 hours. gotta love android ;D

Hello,
I bought an unlocked Samsung S4 Active I537 from ATT, but I use it in Canada.
I have tried to use Goomanager, TWRP manager, safestrap, quickboot; but the phone goes back to the normal bootloader.
When I try to install a ROM from my SD card (by normal bootloader) it does not do anything at all; just stays on the same screen for a minute then reboots normally.
I am guessing the bootloader isnt unlocked.
What tips you got?
Thanks!

In advance: sorry to sound bitter; but wasn't fun how useless can be a device with a locked bootloader.
So the google apps stopped working and the whole thing is pretty much gone to hell/
IF samsung hadnt locked it so good (in a non-compliment kind of way) I could just install a new ROM and done, even better than with their weird touch wiz. But they locked it well so the phone is pretty much an average control remote in present time.
All samsung devices are locked like this one?
or that's their only garbage version ?
If that's the way they roll... no more Samsung phones ever for me.
There is a reason I stopped buying apple stuff... I dont like buying a device that is limited not because of its hardware, but because of the useless things a brand adds to make it useless. (like locking the bootloader)
Anyways... I am considering buying another phone for now.:silly:

The device is far from useless, you can still root and flash custom ROMs, just not CM or AOSP based ROMs. I've posted all the stock ROMs and instructions on how to flash them, so if you do mess up your phone you can always start from scratch.
To answer your question about all Samsung phones, pretty much all Samsung phones from the GS3 an later that were sold by AT&T and Verizon have locked bootloaders. Nearly all the international versions as well as T-Mobile versions are sold with an unlocked bootloader, so you don't necessarily need to boycott Samsung, you just need to be more careful when purchasing a Samsung phone in the future.

I saw many posts around here about reinstalling but I couldnt move on after they required the Samsung to do something through the bootloader.
Also there was a post to uninstall using Odin, but the post had missing files so couldnt do it.
Keep me posted!

Hi all. I could use some help with this issue I've been having. Basically, about a week ago, I went on a trip to Colorado and at the same time had an issue with my data through VM. After talking to them, I had to change my service plan. Since then I haven't been able to maintain any kind of connection with VM; it reads no service a lot, even in places I've never had an issue (home, school, practically everywhere...). Before I deal with VMs customer service yet again, I wanted to see if there is any issues with my phone/rom/kernel and any updates to either I could use.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/desire-510/help/how-to-treat-sd-internal-storage-t3029186
I used this guide to root my phone and install all that stuff in order to use my sd card as my internal storage. So, could there be some issue with that wHich could cause me to not be able to get any service? Is there anything I could do on my side to determine if the problem is with my phone?
If the issue lies with VMs network, are there any updates to the kernel or roms with newer versions of Android that I could use and still use my sd card as my main storage? Side question: on any rooted device, could you do the ad card as main memory thing with the apps, Apparted and Link2sd?
Thanks anyone who can help me out.
Edit: I'm running Android 4.4.2
Kernel version
3.4.0-Missed-Kernel-v2.6.1
[email protected] #4
SMP PREEMPT
Build number
1.48.652.2 CL373881 release-keys
Umm, can think what else I should add. Thanks

Tap settings and then scroll to the bottom and look for either software update or about phone and then look for the option to select PRL update, do that and then go back and do a profile update in the same spot as the PRL update and then reboot the phone.

Yep, I've tried that one. But for the sake of thoroughness, I tried it twice more to no avail. Any other tips/tricks?

Flash this via twrp and let me know if it works.. After you flash this wipe the cache and dalvic cache too then reboot.
Edit: Are you running the stock rom or something else?

Alright, tried that, too, now. Still a no-go.
I'm not sure if I have a custom rom, but I don't think so. I just followed that guide, and I believe it only needed me to install a custom kernel. This thing acts weird. I'll pick it up and unlock it, and it will have 5 bars, but then quickly jump down to 1 then no service. As I'm driving to class, I'll have 4-5 bars but when I get to school, it's gone. It feels like whenever there are WiFi signals, I lose my service connection, if that helps.
Thank you so much, btw.

Install this and see what happens but first create a backup of your current system in recovery... http://forum.xda-developers.com/desire-510/orig-development/modded-cm11-32-bit-t3245291/post63749189

Hmm, definitely going to try this tonight. I've now tried to revert to my stock image, and things just haven't gone well since then. So, since I've already removed or backed up all data, should I just wipe everything (data, system, boot, cache, dalvik, etc), flash root, flash custom kernel, then restore this rom? That way, everything is fresh with no chance of interferences?

No flashing anything the boot/kernel is already in the folder just wipe and restore no using custom kernels there's already a custom kernel in it. It already has root access you do not even need a computer to do this just download extract and move the modded folder to twrps backup folder and restore. This is a full custom modified CyanogenMod 11.. Not stock rom at all.

Okay, wow. I really like this, man. It's really slick. But, sadly, I'm still SOL. Sometimes there is a connection with VM, but it goes away quickly. I've really appreciated your help, but the problem seems to lay on VMs side, or there is a physical problem in my phone preventing it from maintaining a connection.
Im going to try to deal with their customer service and see if they can do anything. In the end, the phone only cost me $50, I guess. If I get it worked out, I'll post what it was about so you may be able to help the next guy with the issue, lol.

Lol that's definitely gotta be VM's side then.. I'm on VM to but let me ask you a question... Is that a pay as you go, like 1 monthly payment or is it prepaid? If it's the monthly payment then ask VM to reprovision the phone but restore back to your stock backup before calling.

It's their $35/month unlimited plan. I just got off the phone with them after 1.5 hours, so not that long, lol. They claim there is a cell tower being worked on, and everything should clear up in 48-72 hours....and yet I can't get a stable signal 20 miles away at school, so it sounds like a rote answer when they have no clue. On the other hand, my wife's S2 barely gets a signal, too.
They are going to comp my for the 2 weeks it's been down, tho. If after this weekend there isn't any improvment....wwell, I'll figure something out, I guess.

The "Cell tower being worked on" is just an incompetent fools answer because they in fact have no idea what the problem really is. What carrier does your wife have, VM to?

Lol, I've figured that one out when they told me that a couple months ago, I called back the next day and asked about the tower and they told me there was no record of any tower problems. Yeah, she's on VM also, with a Samsung S2, completely stock. When I check her signal, she has a connection, but it's low, around -100 to -120 dba.

If it's both phones doing it then it's certainly not on your side.

Hey Mike. I hate to bother you again, especially since I've been reading how much you've been dealing with other people, so I think I know how to do this, I just would like to run this by you to make sure I have it right.
I'm going to try to have VM replace my phone, so I need it back to looking clean.
1) So, I need to relock the bootloader first. I first "fastboot oem lock" in cmd, then.
2) I DL the RUU from HTC's site, specifically the VM 1.49.652.3 file.
3) While still in fastboot usb, I run the RUU repeatedly till it completes
4) Go back to hboot and do a factory reset.
Thanks man. I've tried to read things through, but I want to make sure it'll be clean if they do replace it.
Edit: Wait, I just saw someone said to input "fastboot oem rebootRUU" then run the RUU.

Just relock the bootloader then flash the stock recovery and then run the RUU from the PC but you don't need to factory reset after that because the RUU is the reset.
