what rom is this? *Pics inside* **UPDATED** - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hey guys sorry if this has been answered already but im new to the G1 side of the XDA forums (i got a nexus one, mostly there) and i bought a G1 months and months back off of ebay. at that time i never had an knowledge about rooting or any of that. i have my N1 rooted and i was curious and looked through my G1 unlocked and rooted (bought it that way) and it the about phone part under Model Number, it says "Android Dev Phone 1" now i looked online and these dev phones have a special design on the back and mines doesnt (could have switched back cover) and something about the market not being able to download "cool" things off the market even tho i had no issues downloading on this before. so is this really a dev phone or not really? if so, whats so special about a dev phone? *i have included a picture of the About Phone screen i took with my nexus one*
**well my original post asked if this is a dev phone. i got the answer that its not. but this rom, never heard of this one before. anyone got any clue? also when i downloaded Quick Boot and his the button to go into bootloader, i got a phone icon with a "!". any clues?**

anyone? im just curious

no not a dev phone. it says jesus freak for the kernal. the rom loaded could be a custom rom based off the original devphone rom.

oh okay thanks. i was just curious. i don't really kno much about G1s but thanks

You are NOT providing enough information to determine whether or not that is a DEV PHONE.
Specifically, you need to provide two pictures: FULL front, and FULL back. The data that happens to be on the device does NOT have anything to do with whether it is or is not a dev phone.
You can tell a dev phone because it has cool graphics on the back cover. You will also note that dev phones do NOT say "tmobile" on the front at the speaker.
What makes a dev phone SPECIAL (aside from the graphics) is the BOOTLOADER, which is unlocked for fastbooting custom system images.

well i said in my first post that i dont have that cool design on the back like the dev phone has but i now kno its not a dev phone. what rom is this tho? i downloaded Quick Boot on my phone and when i tried to boot into recovery, i got a phone icon with a "!" symbol. this phone is rooted cuz i have super user permission, terminal, wifi tethering. so whats wrong here? and is this a ROM the person who sold it to me made or is this rom known already?

probably one jesusfreke made? i wasn't really around when g1 first got rooted. i got the mytouch when it first came out and passed on the g1 so i can't really tell you, but that would be my guess. and if that's true, its a pretty damn old ROM.

It's this rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=475381
It's one of the oldest custom roms for the G1. The (!) Recovery is the stock recovery. Find Amon_Ra's 1.7.0 recovery and rename it to recovery.img and put it on your sdcard. Open terminal and type "su" then "flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img". From there update the radio to 2.22.23.02, flash danger SPL, and flash CM5.0.8.

thanks guys. i will update my G1 since its extremely slow n has very limited space for apps

sorry i wasnt in the android game when this rom came out. i didnt kno jesusfreke was an actual developer. i just thought the seller made it himself and added it on

okay flashed the recovery img but now im trying to upgrade the radio but when i go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=640535 it gives me two links under the G1 part. how do i kno which to pic?
my current radio is 1.22.12.29. is it safe to flash either radio?
nevermind i got it all to work. thanks a lot guys. i remember when i wanted to root my nexus one, i took about a month and a half to read on everything to make sure i get my facts straight n this time it only took me about 2 or 3 hours. gotta love android ;D

i dont have a data plan now so i cant activate the phone and i cant use adb cause its not working on win7 for me..is there anyway i can just flash spl and radio and skip the recovery image? I tried someones sim but it just says error when i try to register.
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.. or Confirm this is correct. but..
If you're on an official rom you're out of luck, but if you can update to an ADP rom no login will be required. It's not a SPL or radio issue, purely rom based.

What phone are you using on what network? Was the other person's sim card on the same network? did they have an android data plan?
ADP means Android Developer Phone.

Oh both sims were tmobile US, and the other phone was a moto zn5 so it wasnt a g1 plan.
So I'm *assuming* you're on a G1. You basically have three choices, either goto a t-mobile store and beg one of their techs to let ya use their data to register, find someone else with a g1+data and ask to use their sim card or go adp.
The downside of going with an adp rom is you'll loose the t-mobile branded stuff like tmo ringtones, the myfaves app, ?youtube? (not sure on this one, you should do some reading first or hope someone else chips in).
If you really need your phone now, and are able to install custom roms the adp version of donut can be found --here-- Note: I run the official roms so am not too well versed in ADP vs. AOSP+ADP but it looks like you may actually want the latter(AOSP+ADP)

No, no renaming the recovery image.
Ok, so let me get this straight. You unrooted a rooted phone, to install the official cupcake so you could "one touch" root it which installs a custom recovery image @ the same time?
this is starting to hurt my head...

Gotcha, headaches gone but unfortunately it looks like your stuck. It appears this process *assumes* you have a data connection(for the login process) and without this most guides out there are going to be useless, especially at this point.
I'd say add data for a month or w/e then remove it if you must once done doing what you're doin... or go back to looking for someone with data that can help ya get logged in. Bout the only ways out I can forsee atm.. Wish I could be more help...

alright, cool. Ya, i just got it from someone else wiser than I that without data you've got a long road ahead of ya getting your phone back up n running.
You can always do it the old-fashioned way... Just downgrade to RC29, login with WiFi. Then do the root process that way. Only takes 15min at most.

There's a way to bypass it with rooted ROMs, of which RC29 is one. You can. There's a whole guide on how to do it.

OMG I just flashed my SPL Before my radio >.<!!!!

I just got a new phone from T-Mobile to swap out for my defective unit and I just flashed my SPL before my radio!!! I fuxxed up!!!! Is there anything I can do!????!!!!!??????
what radio did you have? if it was the latest radio to begin with, you are all good. if not, you probably screwed the pooch
Old radio. I was in the process of rooting and thought to myself, "Oh better update the SPL" damn I'm an IDIOT!!! I knew better!!!! >.<
Why is it that every other day someone starts a new thread on bricking their phone?!?! SEARCH! Either way you have a brand new paperweight...I suggest to all that brick their phones...DON'T MONKEY WITH IT! Get a new phone and stick with stock. Cheers
Hi,
Did you already root your phone and flash a modified recovery?
Then copy your firmware to a sdcard as update.zip and you should be able to flash from recovery.

You should return that phone anyway, the Nexus or some new andro with snap dragon will be released or maybe phone with sense?
Seems you lack common-sense for doing what you did. When you think about it that spl is only for spec roms, so things like cyan dont need it.

Dude, if you flash the danger SPL before the radio you can't get past the G1 screen, ie can't get into recovery, fast boot, anything at all! Hence it being the most notorious way to brick's one's G1.

i tells you what you can do. this worked for me. i did the same **** on my replacement g1. i said "when i got the replacement it was running 1.1. i was prompted to update, and i did so. when the phone rebooted it never went past the g1 screen. u have to make big stink about this
i did that and they shipped me one next day air. being that that was the third replacement they sent me within 1 week, and i never had to make an embarrassing thread about bricking my phone
Thanks b0ricuaguerrero that makes me feel a lot better about the phone call I'm bout to make to T-Mobile.
Why does every thread have big-headed flame-whores who just need to feel superior to others?? We all make stupid mistakes and I knew better than to flash the SPL before the radio. I had a stoner moment I guess you could call it. I haven't used a stock rom since I bought the phone when it came out and I don't plan on using one in the future.
I was also thinking.. maybe Armon could add something to the confirmation process of the flash and if the file is *spl*.zip it would remind them they absolutely must flash their radio first. I know some of you might proceed to flame me more, but that probably would have been enough to remind me. Then maybe these brick threads would pop up every week instead of every day XD
I did however post my thread in the correct section though! =P

I agree. I very nearly bricked my phone when first I flashed the new spl. Back then, I was using the old CM recovery (where you had to rename to update.zip), and flashed the update, then renamed the spl, and was about to flash it, but then something told me to double-check... and I realized that the first update I flashed was not the latest radio, but was, in fact, a different update.zip. I was one click away from brick. The thing is, you don't have to be an idiot to brick when you play on XDA.

You SHOULD suggest that idea to Amon-RA about the reminder for anything with spl in it. Sounds stupid, and sure, idiots shouldn't root their phones, but they do. It would certainly help keep the forums cleaner.

HI,
Actually it depends on the mother board in the phone also.
That could be why he can't get into recovery mode.
I was able to get into recovery after flashing the danger spl 8 months ago.
So it can be done sometimes.
Exactly what does your comment add toward helping this member revive his phone? Nothing.

He flashed the spl BEFORE the radio, that always causes a brick, no questions asked. If you flash the spl wrong you cannot get into the OS, Recovery, or Bootloader- essentially you have a very nice paperweight that has a very nice screen

News flash***rom manager***

It does not like our phones. Has great options but.......it sucks. Everytime I flash it on my phone my recovery goes bad in a cpl days. Never had this problem with RA. Do a search rom manager pops up all over the place with bad recoveries. Stop using it ppl. Im sure ill get flamed for this but oh well. Kinda tired of reading of noobs that fall victim to a .apk that seems very easy to use until it craps out and then your stuck at the airport with a bad recovery and ADB no where in sight. Or even if u had ADB you still have no clue how to fix it!!!!!!!!!!!

EDIT: Sorry for my rudeness, anyways, people should know that it's not the greatest idea to use rom manager with cm5/cm6. It has already been established that it may be a bad idea to use the program with the following roms. Sorry I get really cranky in the mornings, not the best idea to come onto the forum with some old news :|

I've used it for a few weeks now with no problems on my MyTouch on 1.6, 2.1, and 2.2 ROMs. Not saying others aren't having legitimate issues, but people in general are much more likely to post negative reports than positive ones.

Please lead us retartds through your install procedure, current rom, set-up so we can be as learndededed as you. I have had cm5&6 with ra installed upon initial set up. No swap/ noext1234, stock mt3g spl 2.22.23.02 radio. Nothing special. I even did it with the donut mytouch rom w/root.I only use basic apps, nothing that would interfere with recovery. to me it seems that when u flash a cpl different roms a day is when it hangs up. I can usually get the phone to boot back up, which gives me a chance to get back into rom manager and flash ra recovery back to the phone. the last cpl times I had to wipe cache before it would actually flash RA recovery. so basically if u can get the phone to boot past the splash screen go to rom manager and flash the **** out of ra recovery until it works. First we found out that clockwork didnt like flashing zip's and backups on low batteries 30% and lower. then the always fun recoverly log issue(cant recall the exact error right now) and of course the cant get to recovery issue. I know it's not a widesporead problem but it is a problem that renders phones useless until u can find someone nice enough to help u and not treat u like a retard. Not everyone knows as much about phones as you guys do....congratulations you know all there is about phones. go learn some ****ing human decency, if u have nothing helpful to say then shut up.
have been using it without Rom manager and highly disagree with the poster.doing it 'wrong' or without knowing 'how to' can certainly cause problems but that should not be described as the problem of the product. lot of people can not use nuclear power correctly (look at the USA) and now we call describe nuclear power as menace which is lame :/

hmmmmm. Maybe since its flashing clockwork from inside rom manager is what might be killing it for some of us. tonight I will try just flashing clockwork outside of rom manager and see how that goes. i like clockwork's set up and it is easy to use, just kinda freaks me out when my recovery goes bad.

but at the same time thats why it is a part of rom manager. one click recovery flasher. to make it "easy". i highly doubt you can go into rom manager and incorrectly flash clockwork recovery. its a one click thing
it's also spoken out at many threads at xda that flashing the recovery from within the OS causes issues, so trying to install the recovery from PC or even RA1.7 should be a better option.
I'm considering that you already know the commands for that. better luck! remember, clock work will allow you to flash anything without signing - meaning? you can edit any update.zip to your liking and then forget about all the trouble of signing it before flashing. a simple toggle should do the trick while you are in recovery mode happy flashing.

It is either a case of your phone, sd card setup/left over files etc..
I use rom manager on every phone I root with no problems since its release. 6 G1's, 3 Fender LE's, 7 Mytouch 1.2 and 4 Evos. Sometimes, it takes couple seconds to show up or go into recovery, but that doesnt mean its gone. Recovery cant just dissapear without something either trying to over write it or it being erased.

reboot into recovery from rom manager right then (read some where that on some roms when u reboot to recovery using the regular way it might mess up....not sure about this one).
wipe everything (clockwork wipes more that amon ra)
reflash any rom
in my case... above steps then in this order
flash fireats custom mtd part 1.1
super E
Gapps
overclock update
fireats custom mtd part 1.2
anyone see a issue with what I have done so far??
Ok I will post back when clockwork fails again.....and if not f-in sweet

You found your answer within the first example link that you provided, look at post #3:

rom manager is not for idiots like yourself. rom manager is a great tool for many different phones. sometimes it doesnt flash a recovery correctly maybe it be poor service to download the recovery, or low memory when flashing it. an advanced user (who its made for) can still flash recovery via fastboot, and have all the helpfulness and easy ui of rom manager and easy access to cm nightlies.
dont knock a dev who works on many different phones, and dont rely on noob application reports and bad reviews. anyone who finds rom manager crap is just a poor android user.

i didn't want to get into this pointless discussion, but you have made a ****ty argument for rom mgr, you have confirmed that it doesn't work properly in certain circumstances, which is a good enough reason to not bother with it.
also, why shouldn't we rely on bad reviews? that's the point of a review, to give some idea about what experience to expect.
(i have never used it myself, amon ra recovery is enough for me.)
I agree it is an 'easy' shortcut that is not the best decision.. Like for example I think it killed my phone. I repaired permissions via rom manager, rebooted as it told me to and now my g1 wont boot past the g1 logo. I could install from a backup but the backup is 1+ month old (my error oops!). I am hoping to find a solution... Really dont wanna wipe everything..

I made a perfectly good argument. Yes it can "mess up", but thats not at the fault of the app. It's at the fault of the phone. There are things that can go wrong that Koush cannot control. It is for ADVANCED users as a quick helpful UI for recovery-based operations. People that don't know what they're doing, or only half-way do shouldn't be using it. However, too many Android users *think* they are advanced enough, yet 5 minutes after using it, post a "PLEASE HELP, PHONE IS BROKEN", because they DON'T know what they're doing.
I'm not saying that all bad reviews are missguied, but I can assure that 90% of them are from noobs that have no idea what they're doing. They rooted their phone because someone told them it was cool, and they have absolutetly no idea whats in their hands and what they can do with it. Let alone, how to properly work it and fix problems. It's easy as pie to point out noobs from those crowds of users, those 3 links in the OP's post are all perfectly examples. People who came to XDA, signed up, never posted anything, then messed up and came crying to the board asking for help (usually in Android Development because people like them, and the OP too, don't how to to post in the correct section).
So for the last time, if you don't know what you're doing on your phone, don't do it. Just because you have root, and an app says "for root users", doesn't mean its for you, which EVERYONE assumes it is. It's piss-poor users like that, that ruin app reviews and the name of Android everywhere.

Get a clue , its a program any gimp, including you, can install from the market, it is made in such way ...the fact that it dosent fail to write the recovery in fastboot mode means nothing!
This program shouldnt let the G1 user flesh any rec image. Till that happens it is the DEV's fault. Shouldnt be in the G1 CM's either.

HELP!!!! S-Unlock Question and insurance claim!!!

I just bought the EVO and ended up giving it to my chick. I have grown to love my Hero way to much to let it go. My chick is very clumsy so I decided to get the insurance. Right after we left the Sprint store I dropped my Hero. The problem that I'm having is that I unlocked my phone with the S-Unlock and I'm worried that a simple RUU will not be enough to pass through Assurion or whatever you call it.
So my question is...will the official RUU be enough? Are there other steps I should take prior to sending it back? Is there any other information I need to know regarding this issue that I haven't mentioned?
I know this is in the Development Thread. I don't think it should be in Q&A due to the possible need for developmental help such as the S-Unlock/Relock or what have you. If an admin thinks it should be somewhere else, please feel free to move it. I just think it fits better here. Thanks!
If you mean you have s off, it will be undone by ruu but only if you did the eng spl, if you did regaw it sticks s off forever. I would've answered this in q and a too.

Thanks bud! I'm sure you would have, I just wasn't sure where it should go and since it involved development I stuck it here. If it should be moved I apologize. But thank you so much!

So what if you go from regaw s-off to eng-spl to ruu?
Sorry Jason Untevoked forever...no going back.

I'm not doubting your expertise in any way but that doesn't seem like it makes sense. Anything that could be unlocked should be able to be relocked right? Has it just not been done YET or is it seriously impossible? Just curious....

I'm no insurance whiz...
...but can't you just tell Sprint that you lost your phone and turn it into your TEP plan?
Isn't Regaw's s-off at the radio level? If so find a GSM radio and flash it and brick it.

In theory it would go s on. I don't know how deep into code regaw went. It depends I guess on whether regaws is below the bootloader, or part of the bootloader. Obviously the eng spl overwrites regaws bootloader version. I think though -please correct me if I'm wrong- that if you do the spl you can flash HEROC.zip and regaws it's HERCIMG.zip, right? If thats right then I promise regaws sticks, I flashed the spl after unrevoked and still can flash HERCIMG.zip as well as use fastboot commands...

im not awesomely experienced with the s-off methods, but i do know that i have only used eng spl to s-off.. i havent used regaws or unrevoked, and i flash HERCIMG.zip and use fastboot commands..
but just for a weird series of events, i flashed my brother-in-law's hero with eng spl and i couldnt get it to flash a HERCIMG.zip, i didnt try a HEROC.zip (didnt have time, i was upgrading him to GB and .35 kernel and s-off was just extra).. so im not sure.. i just know mine flashes HERCIMG.zip and i have only used eng-spl..
OK GUYS!!!!!!!! Here's the verdict....
I flashed the HERCIMG.ZIP found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=804692
Sprint took the phone, no questions asked, and told me to come back in 30 minutes to pick up my newly screened phone.
I DID USE UNREVOKED FOREVER!!!
After the reboot I tried to get back in to recovery and got the HTC black splash screen with the red x. Hboot still booted, however, and I can flash another HERCIMG.ZIP as soon as I get it back. BUT, when I talked to the Sprint guy he seemed cool so I told him what was up. He said that I knew more than he did and that he never would have known to check.
So....conclusion? Sprints employees aren't very privy to the information we all are. They don't know how to check or what to check. So, for now, we can fly under the radar....for now ;-)

i wondered if that would be the case.. i have had to talk to sprint a lot in the past month because of signal issues.. and everytime i talk to someone, they always want to push some sort of update to my phone.. and they say well your phone rejected the update, so then they want to troubleshoot it.. so i end up telling them that my phone is rooted, and if i really need to update that i can do it later, and ask them what PRL i should be running and what not.. i have confused more advanced techs for sprint, because they think they know it all, but a lot of them dont know much about rooted phones.. i have only come in contact with one tech who knew anything about it..
maybe sprint should hire us

[Q] Advice on phone set-up

Hi everybody
Ive had my first HTC phone for a few weeks. Im running 2.3.3 with hboot 1.16. I have rooted the phone and bootloader unlock with HTCdev, therefore I am still S-ON. Running cyanogenmod 7.1.
I have a few questions regarding my device which hopefully you can help me with:
1.(when final versions are released etc) Because cyanogenmod 9 is be based on ICS, can I actually just install cyanogenmod 9 like I did with 7.1? or would I have to somehow upgrade my stock rom to ICS and then install cyan 9? Do I ever have to update clockworkmod?
2.Theres a lot of talk about gold golds when I look on forums especially when people have certain things wrong with there phone. Is it worth me making one just incase something goes wrong with my phone? Or can this not be done, im not actually 100% sure about these tbh.
3.Are there anyways to speed up the phone like apps etc. im thinking about moving all my apps to the sd card as apparently this helps? I also have SD maid pro installed to help clean it up etc I run that once a week. Any other apps that are useful?
4.Is it worth me getting s-off by downgrading my 1.16 to 1.13?
5.With iphone I ran a program called ultrasnow to carrier unlock my phone so I could but any simcard into my phone and it would work. Can this be done with HTC? Im currently locked on optus.
Sorry for the questions. Ive just came from having an iphone for the past 4 years, so all of the HTC stuff is very new to me. But hopefully one day ill be able to help people when they ask questions like I have done today. I will give thanks etc to answers.
Thank you for your time on helping

You should be able to just flash the cm9 rom same as cm7. I'm sure if there was any special requirements they will be stated in the thread when it arrives to our phone.

A goldcard is used for flashing a stock rom from a different carrier. Not much point making one until its necessary

I think moving apps to the sdcard may actually decrease performance as the internal phone memory is faster than sdcard. Unless you have Installed apps to near the phones capacity (which you may have being a new user ) I think its best to leave them where they are.
A good way to increase the phones performance would be to overclock or install a more efficient kernel. When I was running cm7 on my phone I found Enki v0-alpha to be awesome.

If you are happy with how your phone performs in calls and sms I wouldn't bother getting s-off

I'm unaware of any unlock method for this phone on gingerbread. Are you prepaid or plan? Prepaid can get free unlock code if you recharge an accumulated $80 (or $90 I cant recall exactly)
Thanks for the reply. ahh im pretty good with my apps tbh ive pretty much just downloaded the ones i used on my iphone on a daily basis except the ones that are only available in england (im travelling atm).
My phones is ok with phonecalls and sms, but its not very often i have full reception. A lot of the time when i am holding my phone it will go down to 0 bars. Its in an otter box communter case as well. Would different radio's be able to fix this issue? If i was to s-off obviously. And thanks for the kernal info, ill have a look into them. Not that i understand them atm but a bit of research should help.
And when i top up on the 9th i will be on $90 so i will go into optus and see about getting it unlocked.
Thanks for your help
About sim unlocking, I went to ebay and found a seller who pays the hefty fee for access to all unlock codes for different phones, by carrier. The unlock code is associated with the "EMEI" number of your specific phone.
It cost me about $20. My phone will accept any sim card fine. (Won't connect with a few carriers that use unique radio frequencies.)
My phone originally came from Bell, I got it used, and the above method let me put my Fido simcard into it.
Edit: oh, but if you get it free, oh well.

yeah i just wanted to know if i could do it in a matter of seconds like i can with my iphone. Not that i need it atm, but nice to have it done for when i need it. Thanks anyway !
speaking of kernals, if i was to flash a customer kernal. In order to get back to the original kernal would i have to reinstall the ROM or is there a way to delete it as so to speak?

Inside your rom's zip file, there's a boot.img. This is the kernel. You can flash it in fastboot
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
if i reflash the boot.img like i did when i initially installed cyanogen, wont my rom go back to how it was when i first installed it? Meaning i have to re-install all my apps etc etc. probs a noob question tbh, but ive never had to do anything like this yet.

No, the boot partition contains no user data.
Thats great thanks.
now one more question then ill stop annoying you haha.
I want an application of some sort that will allow me to decide which apps can connect to the internet and which cant. As i would like to block some apps from accessing the internet, unless i allow them to? any ideas?
