Is there a way to make it so the browser default browser shows the desktop version of the website by default? I hate going to web pages pages and it's the mobile version.
You could use the about:debug method, but I don't think that's permanent. I just use Dolphin HD browser and set it to desktop since I like it better than the stock browser anyways.
If your default homepage is Google, the setting is at the bottom of the page.

I'm pretty sure that is only for Google.com and not for any other pages.
this is my old gripe about the default web browser is the constatn mobile website crap, personally i think all mobile websites should be disbanded, no one even uses them.
Yeah, I'm using the about:debug method. I wish I would be permanent.
I completely agree with disbanding all of the mobile websites. They are just annoying and it's not always easy to find the link to switch to the desktop page.
someone needs to find a way to make the default browser (i like the default browser) able to permanently go full site, without rooting.
I know that this not exactly what you want, but Dolphin Browser HD has that option, to always go to the desktop version of a website.
That does not help for the default browser, of course, but maybe something to consider, if you didn't know about that option?
Cheers

hey guys. got my SGS today, loving it. and been playing with it since 5 hours non stop now lol
anyways, coming from a nokia n900, im used to the browser showing sites in full web version, not mobile version.
is it possible somehow to make it appear like that in SGS browser too?
cheers
go to the browser url bar, and type about:debug and enter.
nothing will happen, but now you can go to the browser settings from the menu, and scroll all the way down. there will be new menu options there. find the one which allows you to choose between desktop/android/iphone display for websites.
this is a little bugged, because for me after i did this from a fresh rom installation, i can access espn soccernet perfectly. but if i revisit the page it will load up the mobile version.
to view desktop pages permanently try skyfire browser from the market.
awesome maaan! thanx a bunch!!! u think this will work in froyo 2.2 also?
p.s i tried youtube.com desktop version. upload loading the video, the browser crashes. and kicks me to home screen.
so i suppose some sites are not quiet ready to be run n desktop mode on SGS.
perhaps froyo wioth 10.1 flash will solve this

Oddly enough with the stock browser and present 2.2 you cannot access the User Agent setting with About:debug.
Yea they removed it in 2.2, but why? I think it should be an option that is easy to access for everyone. This phone handles desktop sites almost as well as a PC, the big screen actually makes a lot of mobile sites look rubbish.
Sometimes we want mobile sites to save bandwidth, other times we want the full experience.
In Dolphin Browser HD you can get an addon called "Desktop Toggles" which adds a switch on the right toolbar for easy switching between desktop/mobile modes. With some performance and other small improvements it would be a perfect replacement for the stock browser.
One other annoyance with the stock browser is that even with it set to desktop you are still often sent to the "Touch" version of the site and then have to scroll to the bottom and click on full site link. Shame there is not a command line or script to set it to desktop proper.
With the screen real estate on the Galaxy S we should be given the option to view full desktop versions of websites. Often the mobile sites just don't cut it. We want the full version of websites on our phones.
Ok I have Froyo 2.2 running on my Captivate but I cannot force the browser to browse pages in desktop mode instead of wap/mobile mode.
I tried about:debug from the browser to change the advanced settings but the UAString value is not displayed in the list at all, the last time is Set JS flags.
Does anyone really know how to set this on 2.2 with the captivate?

Thanks for the response I was looking for something a little more informative, are you telling me I need to edit files in a package, etc? Just to enable this?
Probably the easier solution would be just to use the Dolphin HD browser and set the user agent to desktop if all you want is to avoid the re-direct to the mobile sites.
I've done that, and Skyfire as well, but I am not sure how flash 10.1 works with the other browsers or if it works with all of them. I know Skyfire intercepts and tries to play them with its only build.
I am also curious why the UAString value is omitted from the debug settings on the default browser to begin with.
I also found that I had to actually manually install 10.1 it was not installed after updating to 2.2
I am also a little disappointed with the sept.11 build of 2.2 I installed, it does not feel faster than the stock 2.1 as a matter of fact web browsing is worse, and so is screen transitioning on the desktop compared to 2.1. Not sure why.
-i have the same problem, i try to load a site and i get the mobile version , and i try the skyfire, dolphin browser hd and nothing ...

I used Dolphin HD to watch a full episode of the Daily Show from the website, so I know for a fact flash works with it, and keeps it from re-directing to the mobile site. Must be some kind of EUE.
Open the browser then on the address type:
about:debug
Then go to settings, scroll all the way down and enable normal rendering.
That's it.

-don't work!!!
I know Hulu is blocking **** so thats expected but its still detecting Dolphin and Skyfire with the correct Strings set.
I know Flash is working but since 2.1 had some sort of flash support previously its hard if the new one is working if it does not show "HD" options.
Since setting UAString cannot be done via debug menu for the default browser, in 2.2 on the build on my captivate I will just wait it out and see if someone figures it out I guess.
Its odd that even with skyfire set to desktop, that Hulu can detect the version still.

It works for me
not for all sites.
This may be because the website uses other aspects besides just UAString. For instance, even though both a PC and a phone have flash 10.1 I am positive there is still a way for a website to indicate which is a mobile version. Also it can use screen res, IP address (unlikely), and other factors. Most likely it is flash player having its own useragent.

In regards to the framework-res.apk...
There is an xml file in there that has the user agent string that our phones are using. I don't remember exactly where it is. perhaps framework-res.apk/scripts/???/
Like I said I'm not sure where it is. It is a lot easier to mess with it on stock than it is on Cognition, Sheps, etc.
Hulu will ONLY work if we are able to change that setting. Skyfire, Opera, etc wont because it still has the string settings.

ok, there are several things I need to point out about this post
a) flash 10.1 will work with non-stock browsers like Dolphin HD, Skyfire uses it's own method to circumvent flash and I don't believe there's a way around it
b) UAString is omitted probably because there is no real need to change that for most users, and the above method for "enable normal rendering" does prevent redirects to mobile, but it doesn't change the UAString (in mobile, it's more importat to have an option to switch to desktop mode than change the UAString)
c) flash 10.1 was installed across every other person's device running 2.2, likely you had an update in the market, but everyone else who installed 2.2 had it. Also, android 2.2 != flash 10.1. Android 2.2 is the version of the OS capable of running 10.1, but there are requirements and licensing issues, so it doesn't necessarily come preloaded on every 2.2 device
d) where are you getting this "september 11th" build date from? I assume you're looking at kernel version [email protected] #1? that means a user named "jetaek.lee" made a build on a COMPUTER NAMED "sep-11". if you knew how to check build.prop, you would see this build was made on 9/21 and that the "sep-11" name showed up on the 2.1 kernel built in June. And considering it was only leaked at the start of october, it was only a week or two old at the time. I'm sick of people complaining about literally the dumbest thing imaginable.
e) the "laggy browser" issue has already been acknowledged and there is a SIMPLE fix available in the forums, search for it.
FWIW, Skyfire uses both the regular flash 10.1 as well as its own streaming implementation. So, you can use the standard flash for most websites but if there is a flash video that is slow you use the skyfire converted stream.

- Yes, I concur
@Kaik541
Well I have only had this phone for 3 days so I cannot say I am an expert on it but I can form a reasonable opinion on the differences in performance in a pre-released leaked version of 2.2 and the stock 2.1 and I am not entirely sure that is complaining about the stupidest thing.
Everything else however you posted I kinda knew but was not sure of hence the post. =)
I agree will prob just stick will Skyfire or Dolphin (although Dolphin worked on fewer sites for me than Skyfire did.)
Will have to see if the release version of 2.2 is optimized.
I've noticed that when I use any browser other than stock, mobile web pages will not show on my NookColor. Has anyone else noticed this and if so, is there a way to fix it?
I have double checked in the settings to make sure that the user agent was correctly selected. Check out the attached screenshots to see what I mean.

Have you updated to 1.0.1 from B&N?
Yes, before AutoNooter.
Have you tried the "More Options" choice after tapping the rightmost (menu) button that is next to the address bar in the stock browser? It lets you select the user agent. Is that what you're looking for?
Let me clarify, I want to Use Dolphin HD, but mobile webpages don't show when using the app. They also don't work for Firefox, Miren or XScope. The user agent for each was set to android in each app.
The stock NookColor browser shows these pages just fine, but is particularly slow.
Do mobile webpages automagically show when you browse in a Non-Nook browser? If they work fine for others, I will just reset my Nook and start the root process over. But I don't want to do all of that if it's just normal behavior.
Same issue here on Dolphin HD. No matter what I do (clear data, change user agents, restart browser) it always displays the web page in "Desktop" format.
On a side note- Yesterday I had success watching html5 videos off Dailymotion, but today none of the videos work for me. Tried using the same video players and added a new one. Same result, can't play video. Does this happen to anyone else?
Looks like Firefox with the "Phony" Add-on works right.
I've had a lot of success making Dolphin use the iPad user agent.
There's a market app called User Agent Switcher. You call it up via Share Page in your browser. It worked fine for me in Dolphin.

is there something special you had to do to get this to work (other than change the default UA in Dolphin HD settings)? Is Dolphin set as your default browser? When I change to Ipad UA it still uses desktop (same with Android and Iphone).

I think it probably IS working (you can go to a site that lists your user agent to know for sure) . . . iPads display most pages in desktop versions (and why not, with a huge screen).
I tested it, and, at least for me, they all work in Dolphin except for Android (ironically) - which, strangely, reads as a Mac. The iPhone user agent will give you mobile views.
You can test by going to http://whatsmyuseragent.com
Thanks wvcachi. Earlier today I went to the market and saw the app User Agent Switcher but now it seems to be gone. Could you please post the APK?

(free app, but since it's removed from market, not sure if that means it's warez) ... Wonder why it was removed?
Getting same thing. A typical android user agent should look like this (from my Evo):
Code:
Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 2.2; en-us; PC36100 Build/FRF91) AppleWebKit/533.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile Safari/533.1
Instead, I get this, no matter which agent I select in Dolphin HD:
Code:
Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10_5_7; en-us; AppleWebKit/530.17 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile Safari/530.17
Could it be something in Dolphin that is 'Froyo-only' compatible? A bug in the older webkit? Maybe I'll try the Dolphin mini and see if that works any different.
[edit]
Dolphin mini shows Mac as well.

I think it might be a 1.0.1 issue. User agent was working properly for me with 1.0 and Dolphin HD, but after I upgraded it no longer works.
can someone send me the apk for the user agent switcher??
i was trying to access the ipad version of gmail, but i cannot change the user agent on most of the browsers, most of them (dolphin HD and mini, miren), as a previous post said, always show this one
Code:
Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10_5_7; en-us; AppleWebKit/530.17 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile Safari/530.17
no matter what i chose in the UA selection options
in opera mobile i was able to change it to the ipad specific UA, and it worked, but opera cant handle this specific gmail page.
i was trying to find that program "User Agent Switcher" but i cannot find it, could someone share it? (since it is free, i guess it wont be a problem)
I need a good browser to use with my Fire that allows me to set the homepage (5.1.1, running Nexus ROM). Lightning+ cannot open tabs from apps right now due to a problem with the coding (not exclusive to the Fire), otherwise I'd be using that or Chrome (which doesn't have homeage). Your suggestions?
Edit: To clarify, I don't need to be able to choose my homepage. I just don't want to always restore my browser session every time I open the program.

I'm currently trying Dolphin out but I've heard of privacy concerns; otherwise it has everything I need. Are the privacy issues no longer relevant? The internet does not seem to have come to a consensus on this.

I have a bias toward Opera and Opera Mini (depending on need/preference). Same underlying engine as Chrome which yields consistent rendering. Opera Mini has integrated page compression and ad-blocking which is attractive to some. Both offer the option option of customizing the home screen with 'speed dials' of your choosing. Privacy is of no personal concern aside for exercising safe behaviors (independent of browser) and avoiding apps that intentionally mine/leak personal information. That said I think much of the banter surrounding Dolphin (which I have also used; nice browser with some quirks) is pure FUD.

I've never heard anything regarding privacy with dolphin. It has ads and such, but root and adaway eliminate those. If you're really concerned with privacy on android, don't use android!
Hi!
Im looking for a new browser for my P9. Been trying a few but it seems like all of them are missing important requirements that i want.
The browser should contain:
-AdBlock (that actually works)
-When closing the browser and start it again, it should start from default page and not the last visited.
-Incognito always on. Not necessary if theres a option to clear history when closing the app.
-Battery friendly
Dolphin is probably the choice, but i just cant seem to like it on Android. On iPhone it was pretty good.
Is there a option out there?
On PC and Android only Opera(Opera not Opera mini).
Opera is like chrome but dont suck so much resources and it have few handy features like: Compression mode, Build in AdBock AND VPN mode.
But best part is Battery life, compared to Chrome, no matter if its PC or Android you can get even 30-40% more time on it.
Also it have sync mode so you can browse sites on PC and finish it on Phone.
Sadly recent update literally F up look of Opera, but if you didnt use it before, you should not notice that, but I would suggest to switch to tablet view in settings, its WAY more comfortable to use it(even better if you change DPI in programming settings of phone to 320-380)
I would suggest giving it a try for week or two, with both on PC and Phone and after that you will notice how bad Chrome was in terms of performance and battery life.
Thanks for your reply.
I remember i used Opera on a old Android and was happy with it. Must say, i kinda like the new look of it. But is it not possible to remove the news feed? Also, the ad block doesnt work very well. And when closing Opera and starting it again it takes me to the last viewed page. Also, no incognito mode.
I am using Brave Browser, fastest than any others and as simple than chrome. AdBlock included.
No lag on the scrolling and it used the last chromium engine.
You can disable the startup page.

Well it has night mode, it's super fast so no need to make it heavy with themes and other stuff.. Adblock built in, I think it's quite perfect
Opera HAVE incognito mode, and it show last visited site.
Incognito mode( its called "private" mode). It can be enabled by just clicking windows icon in phone mode, or in tablet mode: options icon in right corner->create new private tab.
As far as keeping last visited site. Hard to tell why you dont get it, because its one of features that I HATE personally, and its annoy me because opera always open last visited site AND all tabs in background.
Also feed main site can be changed to normal mode just by going to options and changing option: "set feed site as homepage" to disabled.
I'm using Dolphin browser on Android (P9) and I'm satisfied. It has all I need.
Have you looked at Nova browser. It seems quite popular with some P9 users.
