I know this is a total noob question, but how do you view files and folders on the n1? Plugged in the usb cable and the drive showed up on the pc but it's unreadable. What's missing? Like to transfer apk files from the pc to the storage card.
Thanks
Turn on mass storage from the notification bar... be sure to safely remove before turning it off.
Sorry, just got this today and embarassed to ask how is this done.
What do you mean, "it's unreadable"?
You view files and folders on the N1 just the way you are describing. That's how I do it.
Got it sorted guys thanks. Didn't know to drag the the status screen down to enable the mass storage.
How do you see the internal phone storage to delete files? Been trying to figure this out. Have a file manager app and been through all the folders and can't locate where data is stored internally.
Get the EStrongs File Explorer app. You can even connect to shared folders in your network
Got it, nice app. Trying to figure out where "browser" downloads are stored? Have some stuff like to clear that are not on the sd card.
They are on the SD card, in the /downloads folder.
Unless you're rooted (which I believe isn't the case), you can't change anything or even see anything in most of internal folders. And you can't see them anywhere, unless you're familiar with Linux and ADB.
Installed some file explorers and can see all files and folders. Bought direct from google for AT&T.

can anyone tell me how to move apps to sd2?
i've tried apps2sd and another market app but neither can complete the task. both alert me that some apps can be moved to sd but neither will actually do it.
is this something i should just do with esfile or something? copy and move?
also, i've been moving some music to my gtab via usb in folders. after moving to sd, i can't move the entire folder to sd2, i have to copy individual tracks. am i doing something wrong? i can't see sd2 from usb mass storage unless i'm more blind than i thought.
thanks!
I have just bought a Nook Color and slapped CM7 on it (very nice BTW). I would like to transfer files from my desktop to my Nook so they can be accessed at any time even when not on Wi-Fi.
At times of Wi-Fi, I can always use Dropbox, but how can I get them to stay on the Nook to be accessed whenver.
These files would usually be PDF, Excel, Word, other office type files.
Thanks.
Just use a micro SD card, I'm pretty sure cm7 requires one anyway, so there is no reason to have one.
Also, you can download files ffrom dropbox to your SD card for offline storage through the app itself

You can drag and drop the files when your Power cable USB is plugged into your PC.
You just need to open your NC notification bar - when it's plugged in - so your PC recognizes the device.
Sorry for the noob questions, but how would I open those files? Would I need to use a specific app? or will CM7 automatically open them?
If you long press on files in the dropbox app it gives you the choice to save them. They save to sdcard/dropbox. How they open depends on the file type. The nook can open several different kinds of files natively and you can download apps from the market to open anything that it won't. As for the actual process of opening files I usually use my file manager to navigate to the file I want to open and click on it. The nook will either open the file (if only one app handles that file type), ask which app I want to use to open the file, or nothing happens which means I have no app installed that can open that file type.
For office type files I suggest getting ezPDF free from the market and paying for Documents To Go. That way you can edit the MS Office stuff if you need to. RTFs suck. The only thing I know that will open them is the ebook app Cool Reader.
I hope this helps. We all started out as noobs.
also a noob here. i had copied the files to the nook already. so how do i access them now? i can't seem to get my way into this.
thanks!
To access your files use a file explorer such as root explorer.

Palm to forhead... I was missing the notification bar part. Couldn't figure out why I couldn't access any files on the Nook from my PC. Now I just need to figure out if there is a default directory where I am supposed to put music and movies on the microSD card.

No default place for music and movies but it would be simplest to just make a folder called music and one called movies just so that they are easier for you to f/nd.

I'm having a strange issue. If I open a file explorer on my Nexus 6 and go to /sdcard or /storage/sdcard or any one of the other links it, I see a bunch of stuff. If I connect the phone to my pc and go to Internal Storage I see a bunch of stuff.
Problem is, these two are not the same. There are some things that show in one that don't show in the other, and vice versa.
I'm so confused.
what fike ecplorer are you using on your phone? and are you looking at the same location in your fike system with your phone and pc?

Like just hidden files on the PC explorer contents? So the PC explorer has additional files? Perhaps some files start with a period? Are you viewing hidden files in one place but not both?
D
I'm using ES File Explorer.
Some of the files do show.
The ones that are not showing do not have a period in the front.
I am looking at the same location as far as I know.
On the Android, I'm looking in /sdcard and /storage/sdcard0 and /storage/emulated/0 and /storage/emulated/legacy. all 4 of these show me the exact same thing on Android.
On PC, I open my computer, then Nexus 6, then Internal Storage (there is nothing else to open).
Again, as far as I know, these all point to the same place.

ES Explorer can show some system and hidden files which have no permission to be browsed through PC. That's why you just can't see some files
Yes, I know how to use google, yes, I tried many things now and I don't know where else to look for help so I'm asking here, a place with many smart heads full of ideas.
I was doing pretty normal thing on my phone this morning, just trying to copy all the files from internal memory onto the PC. Of course I couldn't do that thanks to "Unspecified error" during copying some of the folders, including Downloads and DCIM. I managed to copy only some of the files from internal storage. I thought a reboot might help. And so the nightmare began. All the other files I wanted to copy disappeared from gallery and Total Commander. They must be on the phone though, as there is something on the phone that uses 2gb of memory. I did not delete them, the system just fails to see them. I already tried deleting all the ".nomedia" files, clearing cache and data from Media Storage app, disabling it, rebooting and enabling again but it was of no use. I'm helpless and I don't know what to do, why did android even do this? I lost a lot of photos and images and I'm really upset about that. Any ideas what to do? The phone is not rooted, never played with software in it, it's updated to 5.1
Download any File Manager from Play Store, check if the files are on the phone memory. If not, well, they are somehow lost. Maybe you cut-paste them onto your PC, and the files were deleted, but you got an 'unspecified error' on moving.
Thanks a lot for a response. I use Total Commander on every android phone I had, I can see that my files look like they disappeared completely, android just generated empty generic folders ("Pictures etc) after I cut off the previous folders along with their content so I saved a little bit that I could. On the other hand something is occupying 2gb of data but the phone refuses to show what, so there is a chance my files are there. After copying the whole content of the phone to the folder on desktop it just shows it weight few hundreds KB. I'll be trying to use some recovery software for android. The question is how did this happen at all? It had no right to happen, what if this happened to someone who has completely no idea about that stuff? Who's to blame and who's responsible for helping such a person? Motorola? Google? Anyway, this is the last phone with no micro-sd card slot I used. A memory card is the best backup
You COULD recover your files even if they were deleted if Android still had a mass storage mode. I don't think any of the data recovery softwares play nice with the MTP transfer that android offers. Of course, the SD card is infinitely better, but a rarity these days. I am sorry for your lost data. You seem like you did everything within your reach to get it back.
EDIT: Just to be sure, did you cut-paste the folders on your PC from phone, or just copy-paste. It might be possible for files to be deleted in cut-paste, if some error occurs in copy.
Thanks for contributing. It seems Google knows better then any of us what we need and there's no more Mass Storage option which gives free access to memory. Unfortunately I don't have that option. First I ensured which files are not affected by error by trying to copy them folder after folder. Then there were left files I couldn't copy, it was DCIM with most recent photos (unfortunately) and download where I kept lots of images with cool infographics found on the internet. I thought a reboot would help to get access to them and you know the rest. Files were there no longer. I'm seriously considering switching to Windows Phone, it seem it's too much to ask for a phone that just "werks" nowadays...I have a painful lesson to use memory card as well as cloud synchronizing but didn't give up yet, still trying anything I can I also wrote to Motorola with help request but I don't think they'll help me any better than people here, although it's more their responsibility to fix that stuff, the phone is barely 6 months old.
A weird one here regarding file structure. Can you help? Have a pressed a crazy setting somewhere?
This has caused me to lose photos so quite important! I'd hate other to have this issue to without realizing!
If i take a photo on my phone. it goes to the SD Card/DCIM/100ANDRO folder.
If i go to ALBUM app and view that file and move it to another location (i.e SD Card/Backup) the file moves..
If i look at the photo again and look at its 'details' the folder location is showing the new location
If I use 'File Commander' app, it shows it has moved too to the new location.
All good!
If i then go to my laptop, and plug my USB into my phone (or view my phone files via the Wireless Media Transfer) and view my phone files. the photo has NOT moved location.
BUT, if i physically remove my mico SD card from my phone, place it into my card reader attached to my laptop, the SD card shows that the file HAS moved.
It seems the usb cable connectivity is not showing the updated file location.
How can this be?
Also. If i view the photo and move it via 'File Commander' app, according to my phone the file gets moved. But when i view my files via USB cable, the the file has been copied (not moved)to the new location, so now there is a duplicate.
And also, now according to the 'Album' app, the file has moved to it's new location but there is a corrupt image file in the old location.
Because I file manage via my phone and then manually connect via USB and back up files and file manage there too, because the file locations are different, I have managed to lose photos.
It seems i shouldn't use a USB cable to view my phone, but i should eject my micro SD and view it away from the phone! But Why?
Can anyone shed a light on this annoying problem/bug?
Thanks

Are you using a 'debloated' rom? Are you stopping the media server from running in any way, via amplify or greenify for example?
Make sure you have the correct drivers
A lot of Devs remove USB services from a build as it's big and takes up a lot of resources. If it's 5.1.1. build then you might be able to use Wajk's flashable missing services .
Hi there,
The phone is a month old, and only has apps from Google play on it. No custom ROM either.
I have developer options, but that's all..
I'll try the driver thing you mentioned soon to see if that helps.

Are you using a USB hub from the PC? Try plugging in the phone directly.
If you have developer options available, have you enabled USB debug?

No hub here, its a cable direct from the phone to the laptop. I've even tried different cables (not that that should make a difference).
and I the issue persists with developer on or off and with usb debugging on or off too.
Hey, could you do a favour? can you confirm that if your phone is plugged in via USB and you have windows explorer open on a folder with a photo in. (and you can see that file)
and then via your phone and ALBUM app you move that photo to a different location, that it moves it via your windows explorer too?
Thanks

I don't have USB working properly on my phone either, it doesn't show the contents of folders on the phone SD card, just empty folders, although I can copy/paste an item into a folder and it shows.
But I have a debloated rom and the USB funtions haven't been installed.
I doubt that windows will see any folder changes until you tell it to refresh (F5)
