Problems rooting htc hero - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Okay i've trying to root my phone for the lazy week but no success. I got my hero about a month ago, and new 2.1 update had just came out so i updated it to 2.1 eclair, but after i realized i could root my phone and have more access to things on the phone than just the 2.1 i wanted to root it. i've looked all over the internet trying to do so, and i finally got here to xda developers and i fouldn a walkthrough to do so but when i get to the part where it says "unrevoked" in the commant prompt, i get suck! i try to type in "su" and it says "permission denied" i would really like to get some help! please!

If you ran the most recent RUU from the sprint site, it is already patched against root. You have to run the older version.
Go to: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694572
Scroll down to Regaw's second post and click on the link that says, "My Personal One I used for testing"
Run THAT Ruu.......THEN proceed to root via his instructions at the beginning of the post.
Good Luck.
P.S. Your software number must be 2.27.651.5
If it has a .6 at the end, you can't root

the software number does end in .6, can i still download that RUU and downgrade? is that what u mean?

Yes. The version in the second post on that link is what you have to install before you can root. Your version is .6 (currently unrootable) and the version on that second post is .5. What it will do is reinstall your stock sprint ROM to version .5 and then you can root the phone.
I have a hero and that's exactly what I did to get mine to work.

As far as I know, if you download the RUU supplied by Regaw and run it, you will have software ending in .5 and able to root.
Personally, I have not tried it, but he has...and so have others.
So give it a shot.....can't hurt =)

How to get my G1 back on track?

Hey guys,
First of all, thank you for spending time on reading this thread, I really need your help.
I wanted to root my phone (G1) etc. etc. So I downgraded it but didn't like it at all! So I descided to move back up again (latest software version).
I spent hours on the internet searching for software, firmware etc. And I managed to set my phone to RC33 and firmware version 1.1 ... Now my phone is not what it used to be, I guess firmware version 1.1 is kinda old isn't it? Strange enough my phone says it already is fully up to date...
So my question is; could you guys help me out, with getting the latest firmware/software whatever?
Thank you in advance!
Well, what you could do is: Go back to the earliest framework specified in say the cyanogenmod rom, which is RC29. Use that to flash your phone to gain root. It will be very odd looking because it the lowest thing. But then you can flash the awesomness of cyanogen onto it and you'll be good to go.
Also what you said you wanted to root it, so you downgraded. That is but the first step needed. i wouldnt want to stay there either. So yeah follow that guide and you should be on your way.
Although I will admit that it is probably the best running firmware for the G1 thus far!

So in "short" you'd advise me to:
Downgrade to RD29 *again*
Get my phone rooted
And install the cyanogenmod Rom
Is that correct? Now I don't see all the applications on the Android Market, some disappeared, will they return?
In short, yes. I know it seems odd to downgrade to upgrade. But to gain root you have to use RC29. To gain root its not too bad. you have to use RC29 to do it. You just install that. start it up. And then download the app "telnet" from the market. and then run a few commands. from there you can upgrade back up. And yes you should see everything in the market. Yeah its kinda annoying but there are some great results possible.
A more in depth set of instructions is located on the Cyanogen wiki. I cant post a direct link due to my account status but google "how to install cyanogenmod" and its about the 3rd result.
Got stuck...

Okay, so here's what I did. I downgraded my G1 to RC29, rooted it successfully. Downloaded the latest cyanogenmod, named it setup.zip, went to recovery mode, did a factory reset and installed the setup.zip. Now my G1 won't get past the load screen (which says G1). What did I do wrong?? I can get still into recovery mode...
Thanks for the help so far!
So I came up with an idea, I need to add a new update.zip how to connect to the computer through recovery mode??
aww, noob threads are cute!

Unable to root 2.1 ruu

Ok I took the plunge and tried the official 2.1 and now I want to root however I am having all kinds of problems. When using fresh kitchen I get:
Asroot push failed: * daemon not running. starting it now *
ADB server didn't ACK
* failed to start daemon *
error: cannot connect to daemon
When using the command prompt and entering adb shell I get:
* Daemon not running. Starting it now*
ADB server didn't ACK
*failed to start daemon
error: cannot connect to daemon
Checked netstat and nothing is running on 5037
I tried flashing the official 1.5 ruu with no luck either....
Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks
any thoughts or suggestions.
If you ran the signed sprint one, you can't root. You didn't follow directions.
tell us which file you ran and maybe we can decide if this is even worth pursuing.
..... hummm did not see that in the dev forum. Can I roll back to 1.5 and root from there. I did use the official signed update :-/
Nope.
You're stuck until either someone roots 2.1 or you get another phone.

you didnt see in the forum that you cant reroot 2.1? or roll back to 1.5? i call bs, its all over this place.
You can't root the old way because it patched asroot2... You can't use the 1.5 RUU because the hboot doesn't take kindly to being downgraded... so, you're screwed until we root that.

Thanks for the info
I like to run head first into things....I don't learn lessons.
I'm new to Android. I had a Pre and was big into webOS for a while...well now I have a Hero. Saw the 2.1 leak and though "hey, I'll just grab that there RUU file...its got to be easy to root!" Why am I so awesome?!
This post is sarcastic but I assure you, I am this stupid. I hope someone roots this soon. I'm new to Android and I'm getting nowhere trying to figure it out on my own.
I would just wait for the EVO but I don't get my upgrade until September so its not really worth shucking out the bucks for a new one on 6/4...it'd be nice to have tethering and Skype and of-the-such on this here Hero.

What are the odds you can do what they do with the droid?

I know there was no 2.0.1 for hero and that this is a droid rom but I am taking a shot in the dark.

Not the best idea to start shoving things into your phone if you have no idea what they are doing...especially if they are made for other devices.
On second thought, it might help justify a new Evo purchase if you brick your Hero.

So why is the leak rooted but the final was not? Aren't they the same?
If you had run the RUU from the leak you would be in the same boat.
It's easy to KEEP Root and install new update zip. ROOTING a phone with the RUU is a different matter.

So what droid does, is down grade the phone to a previous OS version. I am sure they are doing something special to get it to go back. They must have figured out how to sign the file or something.
To do this we would have to modify RUU to Load a 1.5 OS/Kernel on a 1.47(?) hboot. But also to do this, we have to be able to sign the files with a release key.
The whole reason that the 1.56 RUU doesn't work anymore is because of the HBoot version > than what it is trying to load.
I guess its POSSIBLE to get the 2.1 RUU to load a 1.5 OS, but I don't think we are able to sign the files like HTC does and the RUU will fail without that.

Neither the leak or the official was rooted. The files where extracted and root was patched, busy box was installed by a dev here.
There may have been a leak several weeks ago that still had root because ti was a test rom.
The WILL not include root in an official build...that is one reason why this community even exists.
There is an international beta of Skype for Android and Verizon has an app. I'm pretty sure there should be a way to make the app think you're using a Verizon phone so the app'll work. Same goes for the FiOS apps. Again I'm new to Android and haven't messed too much with the platform. I need to learn a bit more before I can really say this with confidence.

Easiest way to root

The .6 build? I'm a little confused over the different methods i've seen on here... someone point me in the right direction i'll buy you a cookie
im kinda if your shoes too buddy. well the first thing you do is you have to downgrade to .5 version cause the .6 cant be rooted so you need the ruu to downgrade
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=661057
so just run that and yes make sure you back up your phone.
then you have follow this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694572
i tried to do this guide and i got to the point where im in the recovery and i flash the zip and then reboot and just get stuck on the htc boot screen so after that i dont know what to do.
so i just stuck with the special permissions and the unevoked apk. and it is still root but i cant get roms which sucks cause i want live wallpapers.

Sent from my fresh hero.

includes a qr code to download the universal androot app. couldn't be easier. just install the app and click root. then load a recovery by either using rom manager or open a terminal and do the usual flash_image recovery method.

WHY can't I downgrade to 2.27.651.5?!

I can't downgrade to 2.27.651.5... I have 2.27.651.7 now, and I downloaded the .5 RUU but I get error codes 170, and 171. I tried going into fastboot mode, and just on the homescreen. HELP! PLEASE!

That didn't work either. :/
maybe the ruu file is corrupted? try redownloading it again and running it
You'll probably just have to wait until that update is rooted.
If you want a copy of the. 5 ruu that definitely works let me know and I will post it for you....well, it definitely works if you have .6. .....

If all of the above suggestions don't work, try this. First try to root the ROM you have using UniversalAndroot. Then install a custom recovery and a custom ROM such as CM6. If you can get that far and you still find you want to downgrade to .5 then the RUU should work great for ya. Good luck amigo.
Another option would be to try the .6 RUU (which is root-able) instead of the .5 one. Just go to Support on the Sprint website and you'll find the download for it there.
thank you everyone, these are all great suggestions... ill give them a try today after school.
My wifes hero was on .7 and I went back to .6 with the RUU and rooted. It took a while to run the RUU.
I can't imagine any good reason to bother with .7 till its easily rooted.... I rooted .5 and see no reason to ruu to .6 and re-root either though....unless there is a big 'doh!' That I am missing...

nothing has worked. :/ no ruu will work... so i guess im going to have to wait until someone figures out how to root .7 :/
thanks to everyone who attempted to help.
Same here Im stuck on .7 and tried to get back to .5 and .6 with no luck. I guess I should never do another update until it can be rooted.
There's a new thread in development about rooting .7 now.

yeah everytime I run the ruu it i get to the unrevoked and it says wait 30 seconds i do but when i try to downgrade to .5 it says permissions denied in cmd prmpt

[Q] serious problem with getting root, tried many methods, nothing happening

im having a heck of a time getting my phone rooted again. i was running CM6.1 when i wanted to apply the repartition mods. well, i did something wrong a few times, and it broke. i have no clue what has happened, but i need help. yesterday, i was able to root and install CM6.1, but it has RA recovery, which i dont like, and no data connection without wifi. today, i ran the .7 ruu, followed the easy root method, but it seems that root manager isnt able to install clockwork recovery properly! i can get su with QtADB, so i know its there, but it simply isnt working. any suggestions or questions that i havent clarified, please ask, becuase im kinda desperate.
I went through some of these problems some time back.
I would recommend you to run .5 RUU, root using regaw's method, install ROM manager to get recovery and go from there.

is it possible to drop back down to .5 from .7? becuase the tool just hangs on "sending..." and it hasnt worked for me. otherwise, i would have run unrevoked a long time ago.

but it isnt working! its stuck on the "sending......" piece. see, heres how i do it. i run the .5 ruu. it sends the phone to bootloader, i get error 171, i rerun the ruu while the phone is still on bootlader. last time i did that, it worked just fine. now, it gets stuck at "sending........" and i have to stop the whole thing and do a battery pull. im really lost here, i really need to get this working too.
EDIT: i downloaded the .6 ruu and tried that out, and this time, i let it run. i didnt stop it. i got error 150, wrong bootloader version. how can i fix that?
I am sorry man... . I am not sure how to resolve that. Maybe someone around can...
BTW, were you able to run any other RUU?

i think im able to run .7 all the time, but the .7 root method doesnt seem to be complete or im doing something wrong. i just want to get back to .5, thats where i know how to do things.
EDIT: i did some more reading, and i found on android central that you cant use an ruu to flash a phone with a higher hboot than what the ruu updates to. so since .7 seems to use a different hboot then all the rest, i have to keep resetting to .7 until i can get the root to finally work for sure. there seems to be a little trial and error involved with the easy root method.
EDIT2: I FIXED IT! WOOT! i have absolutely no clue what happened there. im so paranoid now that ill probably do nandroid backups daily lol ...whew, that was tough...

Glad that it worked out.
However, about your comment of going back from .7 to .5, not sure how the hboot thing works, but I have downgraded from .7 to .5. I was having trouble with my .7 rooting and then had to RUU .5, root, recover and go that way...
