[Q] serious problem with getting root, tried many methods, nothing happening - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

im having a heck of a time getting my phone rooted again. i was running CM6.1 when i wanted to apply the repartition mods. well, i did something wrong a few times, and it broke. i have no clue what has happened, but i need help. yesterday, i was able to root and install CM6.1, but it has RA recovery, which i dont like, and no data connection without wifi. today, i ran the .7 ruu, followed the easy root method, but it seems that root manager isnt able to install clockwork recovery properly! i can get su with QtADB, so i know its there, but it simply isnt working. any suggestions or questions that i havent clarified, please ask, becuase im kinda desperate.

I went through some of these problems some time back.
I would recommend you to run .5 RUU, root using regaw's method, install ROM manager to get recovery and go from there.

is it possible to drop back down to .5 from .7? becuase the tool just hangs on "sending..." and it hasnt worked for me. otherwise, i would have run unrevoked a long time ago.

Just run the .5 RUU from your computer, it should do it... worked for me.

but it isnt working! its stuck on the "sending......" piece. see, heres how i do it. i run the .5 ruu. it sends the phone to bootloader, i get error 171, i rerun the ruu while the phone is still on bootlader. last time i did that, it worked just fine. now, it gets stuck at "sending........" and i have to stop the whole thing and do a battery pull. im really lost here, i really need to get this working too.
EDIT: i downloaded the .6 ruu and tried that out, and this time, i let it run. i didnt stop it. i got error 150, wrong bootloader version. how can i fix that?

I am sorry man... . I am not sure how to resolve that. Maybe someone around can...
BTW, were you able to run any other RUU?

i think im able to run .7 all the time, but the .7 root method doesnt seem to be complete or im doing something wrong. i just want to get back to .5, thats where i know how to do things.
EDIT: i did some more reading, and i found on android central that you cant use an ruu to flash a phone with a higher hboot than what the ruu updates to. so since .7 seems to use a different hboot then all the rest, i have to keep resetting to .7 until i can get the root to finally work for sure. there seems to be a little trial and error involved with the easy root method.
EDIT2: I FIXED IT! WOOT! i have absolutely no clue what happened there. im so paranoid now that ill probably do nandroid backups daily lol ...whew, that was tough...

Glad that it worked out.
However, about your comment of going back from .7 to .5, not sure how the hboot thing works, but I have downgraded from .7 to .5. I was having trouble with my .7 rooting and then had to RUU .5, root, recover and go that way...

The .6 build? I'm a little confused over the different methods i've seen on here... someone point me in the right direction i'll buy you a cookie
im kinda if your shoes too buddy. well the first thing you do is you have to downgrade to .5 version cause the .6 cant be rooted so you need the ruu to downgrade
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=661057
so just run that and yes make sure you back up your phone.
then you have follow this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694572
i tried to do this guide and i got to the point where im in the recovery and i flash the zip and then reboot and just get stuck on the htc boot screen so after that i dont know what to do.
so i just stuck with the special permissions and the unevoked apk. and it is still root but i cant get roms which sucks cause i want live wallpapers.

Sent from my fresh hero.
see my post here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7701291&postcount=36
includes a qr code to download the universal androot app. couldn't be easier. just install the app and click root. then load a recovery by either using rom manager or open a terminal and do the usual flash_image recovery method.

Someone please help newb with brick

I have been looking through the threads, and havent seen what I am looking for. So hopefully i will not get flamed to bad. I tried to install mikeymikes GR12, I got through the first stage of downloading the gingerbread rom to the phone through odin, but then it went south. I lost root and was unable to get back to the download screen. I then tried to use the all in one tool to root the phone, and that put me to the recovery screen where i could not use the ok button, just the volume up and down buttons. I just managed to get the download screen to come back, but i cant get anything else to work. Any suggestions on what to do, where to go from here.
Thank you for your help
I would go back to stock first. I believe your problem lies in the bootloaders. There are two bootloaders in the beginning and if you don't have the gingerbread ones installed, you won't install gingerbread properly.
I would use DesignGears One Click Odin to go back to stock and load the Froyo drivers. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989. Make sure you open up Odin first before plugging in your phone, then hit the Start button.
Once that is done, you can try again, but read about getting the GB bootloaders installed properly before you try to flash a GB ROM. Any of the GB ROM instructions should get you there. Just make sure you know all the steps before you try it again.
Good Luck!!
I don't see why you would be flamed for your question. That is what Q&A is for and you are in a bad spot. The biggest thing to remember is to be as specific as possible when you post a question. This includes what you were trying to do, what steps you took, what was the result, when did the problem occur (which step) and what you have tried to do, if anything to fix it.
One more thing. It is always possible that the USB cable is bad or that the USB port you are plugging into (on the computer) isn't working properly. You might also want to plug into a different USB port.
Sorry these posts are broken up, but as I'm coming up with ideas, I'm posting.
Here's something you should try:
(I wrote this for Team Phoenix, hence the sig.. But it works the same with every ROM. There's a link to a very nice tutorial I suggest you follow).

Me too. If we can ... Remember not all things can be recovered from so please read everything twice before ever touching your phone.
10-4. My next question is: where do I get froyo from. Kies sees my eclair version as unregistered, so it wont update. And my ota sees an update is needed, but when i tried, the area im in has crappy signal, so the update failed and now i have to wait 24 hours to do it.
Any suggestions?
Thanks again
are you planning on flashing a custom rom?
if so updating to official froyo is A HUGE WASTE OF TIME
EDIT:are you Canadian by chance? if so check this thread:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=979133
I only plan to root the official froyo right now, that is what I had before I jacked it up. I am not Canadian.

Going on official froyo will get you the signature failed error (which you need the 3e recovery fix if you ever want to flash a custom ROM).
So, basically, if you want more than 2.2 official release. We suggest you don't update. If you're perfectly fine staying on 2.2 Froyo, then there's no problem lol
As for Kies, you shouldn't have any problem using Kies mini. Other than that, there is a 2.2 flash around here. I'm sure you'll find it doing a little search
I had root on my official froyo for a couple of months without a problem. Right now i cant get my phone to go into download mode, it only goes to the battery screen. If i can get to download i can make some headway

If the battery pull way isn't working. You could always go read on abd. It send SU commands and you could get your phone in downlaod mode that way.
Is there an easy way to get adb without getting the sdk. I downloaded the sdk and it keeps saying i need java, when i download the java crap it says the same thing.

[Q] Broke my Hero bad...need help

Yep, I broked it.
So, wanna hear a fun story?
I got a free Hero, and tried to root it. First thing I tried was z4root. It failed. Then I tried RegawMod. Fail. Perhaps it didn't help that I had the latest stock version of the Hero, 2.32.651.x
So, then, me being a wise guy, decided that I'd just try doing it myself through ADB. I tried to follow CyanogenMod adb rooting instructions HERE. I kept getting stuck at step 5:
chmod 755 /data/local/tmp/rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin
Click to collapse
It kept saying something about how it couldn't chmod "/data/local/tmp/rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin" because it wasn't a directory. Well, duh, this I know...but I couldn't figure out how to make adb understand that.
Well of course, because I couldn't chmod rageagainstthecage, I couldn't move on to the next step, actually running ratc:
/data/local/tmp/rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin
Click to collapse
Now, this is where the fun really begins. I rebooted the Hero, just to see if that would help, and then I was going to try again. Trouble is, the phone wouldn't boot. Kept getting stuck on an endless boot on the HTC screen. So, I went into clockworkmod, wiped everything (except boot), and then restored the nandroid backup I had made before I started this whole process. Still no dice. Still stuck at an endless HTC boot screen. I tried a hard reset on the fastboot menu just for ****s and giggles...but still nothing doing. I also tried running the RUU app on my computer to install an older version of the stock ROM, but RUU would not recognize my device (even though HTC sync and ALL of the drivers are installed, and I had it mounted to the computer in clockworkmod).
So...I guess my question is - does anyone have any clue how to fix this? I still want to root the damn thing, but right now I'd be happy just to get the stock rom back up and running. I know if I could find a stock ROM I could probably flash it through clockworkmod...alas, the only one I found turned out to be a corrupt zip file.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

look here for the RUU.zip made by tehdarkknight, get it. Then run in with the instructions from jasonmaloneys thread about fastboot without s-off. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1063843
EDIT: that *should" unroot you back to stock. Then follow the REAL rooting thread (adb method) by regaw leinad.
PLEASE DISREGARD this thread. I'm an idiot...apparently the damn thing was rooted before I got it...which explains why my attempts to root it weren't working. Flashed CM7 in clockworkmod and it booted up with no problems.

My story is similar. Boot into hboot stay in fastboot mode and DO NOT VOL DOWN. once youve booted into hboot, plug the hero In and get the ruu started up. Once you've started the ruu, if you get the connection error message, click the action button (trackball) on 'fastboot usb mode' and for some reason, the ruu seemed to connect to it then. Hope it works out for ya.

Also, when rooting with z4, do a temporary first then after a successful temporary root, hit the permanent button. That's done the trick for me in countless seemingly hopeless situations.

[Q] AlphaRevX S-OFF, Clockwork recovery and want to upgrade to WWE_2.30.405.1

All,
I want to install the WWE_2.30.405.1 OTA upgrade that arrived yesterday but when I tried, it failed, so I need some help.
I have an IncS that came with Froyo and which I then upgraded OTA to gingerbread when it arrived.
I later unlocked with AplhaRevX and installed Clockwork Recovery, then rooted by following the great guide in the dev section.
I don't really care about S-OFF, clockwork or root anymore, been there done that, didn't really make much difference to what I want to do with my phone, so if I have to reset to a stock S-On phone with standard recovery etc then thats fine.
Can anyone help?
This is what I tried, but it didn't work...
Last night I got an OTA notification that there was an update, so went ahead and tried the install.
When it rebooted I got a a boot screen with an exclamation mark in a triangle and the Android guy. Then nothing..
After about 20 minutes I decided to take out the battery and reboot, that got me back in and my phone is working now, but without the upgrade, so now I'm here looking for help.
You can upgrade with the RUU_Vivo_Gingerbread_S_HTC_WWE_2.30.405.1_Radio_20 .2808.30.085AU_3805.06.03.03_M_release_199308_signed.
Donwload link on the forums.
Thanks, just found the link, but the hosting server is currently down so I can't test. Will post results when I can get the file and know what to do with it.
Some more questions...
The link is in the form of a windows EXE which makes me somewhat nervous.
I've only ever installed andoid rom's via the OTA update process, and so I'm not sure what I should do with this file.
I'll download later and see if I can figure it out, but have you explicitly tried this with the combination I have listed above?
I have a working phone right now so I'm not interested in anything that is untested.
Looking at other threads with the combination I have listed above, but applied in a different order, people have needed to resort to XTC-Clips to recover, I won't be able to do that so I need to fix this in software only.

what you need to do is just to download the latest Ruu v2.30.405.1, connect ur phone to computer, double click the EXE file that you downloaded to run the Ruu program on a winxp/win7, click the confirm or ok button ,then you'll get what you want in about 15mins...remember not to do anything on ur phone or computer during this period.
OK Great. Will do as soon as I can download from filefactory again.
Again though I want to know has anyone tested this process and what will state will my phone be in when it is complete?
Just want a bit of reasurance that someone has actually done this with an AlpharevX S-Off phone and clockwork recovery installed.

Those that were able to download the 2.30 RUU before the file server went down have reported that after upgrading to 2.30 AlphaRevX is no longer able to successfully run and S-OFF this version even though the HBOOT loader appears to be identical to the 2.12 RUU. If you currently have S-OFF and wish to retain it, then you shouldn't install the 2.30 RUU. You should wait for someone to build a rooted version of this ROM.
Or S-OFF with old rom, install ARHD 1.1.0 (2.30.405.1 based) and after the radio .06.03.03_M.
This is the right way.

OK Thanks.
Do you have a link to someone 'reporting' that they tried the RUU on a phone with AlphaRevX S-Off and Clockwork?
Not worried about losing my S-Off status or root, I want my phone to be able to take OTA updates again, in fact if I could restore to the state it was in before I unlocked, then that would be best of all.
Also anyone willing to post a copy of the RUU somewhere else for download, cos the filefactory link still seems to be down.

Here is a thread that discusses flashing the RUU and the attempts of AlphaRevX:

OK That thread is all about how it didn't work, and the download site is still broken, so I'm not going to try anything for now.
I'll be away with work next week and need my phone to work, so I'll look in again when I get back and see if anything has changed.
Thanks for all your help anyway, I don't think this thread actually got even close to answering my question, but at least you tried.

The point of mentioning that thread was that these users had previously used AlphaRevX to gain S-OFF and when they installed the 2.30 RUU and they lost root and S-OFF and they are now attempting to get S-OFF back which is the part that is failing.
OK So I'm back from my trip and today I had a chance to play with this a bit.
I downloaded this RUU http://api.viglink.com/api/click?format=go&drKey=1359&loc=http%3A%2F%2Fforum.xda-developers.com%2Fshowthread.php%3Ft%3D1033922&v=1&libid=1310921120143&out=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.filefactory.com%2Ffile%2Fcc2d60f%2Fn%2FRUU_Vivo_Gingerbread_S_HTC_WWE_2.30.405.1_Radio_20.2808.30.085AU_3805.06.03.03_M_release_199308_signed.exe&title=%5BROMs%5DIncredible%20S%20Shipped%20ROMs%20Collection%20-%20xda-developers&txt=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.filefactory.com%2Ffile%2Fcc2d...308_signed.exe and tested an install.
I got what I wanted more or less, I have the update and all looks good..
However for those of you following from home, these are the trade-offs.
All data on my phone was erased. I had an 'out of box' experience when I booted the phone.
I lost S-Off status
I Lost root
I seem to have a corrupt recovery partition. (When I select recovery from the boot menu it hangs at a screen with a red triangle and an exclamation mark. Only way to boot the phone after that is to remove the battery and re-insert).
4 in particular bothers me a bit, as I'm not sure how to recover that and I'm not sure if I may need it in future. If you remember, what I originally wanted was to be able to get OTA updates in future, from reading around, I don't think that will be possible with a corrupt recovery image, so any tips on fixing that would be great.
Just download the latest or if you wanna keep s off a previous RUU from your carrier. And run the program it will return the phone to stalk
Sent from my HTC Incredible S using XDA Premium App
Hmm, thats what I think I've done.
My device is not tied to a carrier, so the WWE RUU Should have been the right one.
I have now also tried using fastboot to flash the recovery, but I get the following error
C:\Phone\>fastboot.exe flash recovery recovery.img
sending 'recovery' (3658 KB)... OKAY
writing 'recovery'... INFOsignature checking...
FAILED (remote: signature verify fail)
I tried with an older recovery from WWE 212 as well, but got the same error. Don't really know where to go next, but any help gladly recieved.

Well I bought a used Hero cdma phone, rooted it and installed cyanogenmod on it. I did all this before activating it with sprint. When I called them they were not able to get it hooked up. I didnt want to tell them it was rooted so after an hour of them trying things we gave up.
I am trying to unroot and go back to stock now to see if it will activate. I have been running into nothing but trouble.
I have been reading alot of threads here and have gotten this far...
after trying to install stock rom i got this "Verifying system type.... E:unsupported radio version, E:Update failed...."
I downgraded the radio by flashing an older recovery and turned s-off
now when i try to install hercimg.zip I get "cant open....(bad)....install aborted"
The only thing I can see is the problem is I need to be using hboot 1.41 not 1.47 that im on.
Any input, help or a point in the right direction would be super awesome!
Thanks in advance!

Neither method work for me! I have Tried everything. As far as I can tell RUU's wont work because my HBOOT is 1.47. I have tried to flash a HERCIMG I have flash year old nandroid back ups! and many other methods but the hboot won't go back to 1.41! Do you have any insite. Hercimg flash just fails and RUU give a usb connection failed. AS far as I can tell from reading other post, the new hboot starts different and screws up the ruu! Thanks in advance!
Correction: all the links in the first method are dead so I wasn't able to try it!
Are you still having this issue ???
