I know this will seem stupid, but I am a noob when it comes to rooting my phone. I was going to try it, but I have the Sprint OTA Update that blocks rooting. I have yet to see mention of a new method of rooting the phone, so is there another method? Do I have to go back to the original RUU (2.1 something).
Also, the only REAL reason I want to root the phone is to remove the stupid Sprint Apps (that you can't remove otherwise) and to re-enable the WiFi Hotspot functions. Do I need to install a custom ROM for that or can it be done without replacing the current ROM from Sprint?

If you follow the guide here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694572 you'll see that it tells you how to downgrade to an older RUU that allows you to root your phone.
The other questions I'm not 100% sure about since I'm a newb too, but it wouldn't surprise me if you were able to. Rooting is a powerful thing.
It can be done without installing a cstom rom, using ADB, or a kitchen.
How
Do do I re-enable the WiFi Hot Spot and remove the stupid NFL and Nascar aps once I root the phone? Someone said I could use ABD or kitchen, but I know nothing about either.

No one can tell me how to turn this on on my phone? Do I need a special ROM? Is there a way to turn this back on just by rooting my Hero using the .5 version of Sprint's Driod 2.1?

Wifi Tether
I did the suggested Google Search and found lots of "experimental" ways to tether for various Andriod phones. Unfortunately, none of the phones listed were the HTC Hero running Android 2.1. So, any other suggestions?
http://code.google.com/p/android-wi...me=wireless_tether_2_0_5-pre2.apk&can=2&q=Evo I Think this is the one.
That one
That link appears to be for Android 2.0.5 on the Evo. I am running 2.1 on the Hero. Will it still work?
Just try it. It won't break your phone if it doesn't work. The worst thing that can happen is that your dog will die and your house will burn down.

It's the same file that used to be labeled for the Hero as far as I know. Or what Reinhart said.

I too am having problems. For all those that need the old version, I am including it in this post. For those that might know how to fix the new one, I am including it in this post as well. Just unzip. Both files inside. 2.0 is obviously the newest version.
Mods, I don't think this is a problem, as the app is not protected and readily available on the Market.
Thanks in advance to someone that can fix it, and I hope the old version helps someone who might have forgotten to back it up.

ok i have something strange to report...
i have the new version installed (2.0) and like everyone else it wont open BUT
my battery level just dropped below 30% and my phone got a notification from My Account 2.0 and when i clicked it a popup came up giving me suggestions to save my battery by changing some settings...hmmmm FC but still running in the background...
2.0 myacct
i am also getting foreclosures hope it was an error by tmobile and theyll update tomorrow or something i cant believe they would target rooted ppl.
Anyone with a JF US CRC1 rom tried it?
Could be that since most of us are on anything but the T-mobile rom that it does this
I mean most of these ROMs are based of ADP or AOSP..
I'm not sure, and maybe im just talking non sense..
But also someone in the comments said they had a Google Ion and it didn't work also..
So this could be ONLY for T-Mobile branded phones?

Give credit next time. There is some property in build.prop that the app is looking at to see if our phone is supported....dont know which tho since my ROM's build.prop keeps going back to its default every time i apply a "fixed" one.
The app is getting a NullPointerException, I don't think it has anything to do with being rooted or not.

So what IS the build.prop change that we need to make? And will it hurt anything else if I modify it?
See my post above...its using the build.prop to detect if we can use it...thus this error on some rooted phones.

Hey all, recently bought the Sprint HTC Hero CDMA, got it rooted, flashed, and using ModACO 2.2 Custom.
Before and After I installed the ROM
When I go to "settings" > "phone info" it says "firmware 1.5"
My question is, can I install a custom ROM that is higher than Android 1.5, or can I only use the custom ROMS under Android 1.5 category?

First of all, as long as your posting a general question you "NEED" to post it under "General" or "Q&A" category!!
Once you are rooted, you can install "any" ROM that's compatible with your device and carrier!!!
Can some admin please move this thread to appropriate section?
Sorry and Thanks
Sorry, wasn't sure if I should do general or here just because it has to do with ROMS.
But, thank you for answering my question
I bet you guys are great to party with. Do you call the cops on someone that's had a couple beers too? Let the mods do their job. They don't need you crying tattle-tale.
To answer the original question, yes you can use any ROM in this section whether it's 1.5 or 2.1. Just pick one that has the features you want and go for it. Be sure to nandroid.
Going to try Aloysius 2.1
It has Apps2SD already installed it so it says, I've still been trying to get that to work right.
You just gotta wipe phone, partition sd fat32+ext2+swap, than install the new update.zip ROM right?
Just follow the instructions the the thread of the ROM of your choice. You'll do fine.
Well said sub. Well said. But yes just follow directions and search the forum. You will learn a lot.

Yeah...Make sure to backup anything on your sdcard to your computer including your very 1st nandroid. Do not lose it. Which recovery do you have 1.6.2 or 1.5.2 or 1.2.3?
When creating the partitions, leave the defauts as they are unless you plan on installing 800+ apps. Most of the time the ROM will tell you what to do. Always nandroid and also copy your nandroid folder to your computer so you don't lose everything if you sd card fails
MOD EDIT - Moved to Q&A
I have 1.2.3
I got Aloysius up and running, still having trouble with the Apps2SD though.
Once I go into DConfig and save my settings it asks me to reboot. Not sure why, but phone won't start up with microSD card in it. It reads the card if I put it in after reboot though.
I'm currently new to all these rooting stuff. I check everywhere online but I couldnt find how to root my Sony Xperia Z
Model: C6606
Android Version: 4.2.2
Build Number: 10.3.1.E.0.191
Can anyone figure this out? I want to root my device to map controller for games.
If anything I'll downgrade if it's not available
Try Root many Android.
Method 0 (cubeundcube method) should work for you.

LOL. What a rude individual you are.
Protip - When asking for assistance, good manners are a must. You can apply that both here and in your daily life.
1. See post #26 of this thread.
You will see that it successfully roots the firmware that you have. You will also see from the first post of the thread that the exploit was created by cubeundcube.
2. The tool I originally linked to contains the same exploit by cubeundcube, without the need to manually set the path to adb for it to work. I specifically linked the easier to use tool, as if you're unable to find these things by yourself with a Google search, you obviously need the simplest method possible.
So, to sum up, if I say it WILL work, you will try it? I said "should" because I own an international unbranded, unlocked Z (C6603), not a crippled carrier branded variant, so I cannot say 100% that it will work.
Try it if you want. If not, good luck with your unrooted phone.
In future, if I see any more requests for help from you, I'll be sure to stay clear, lest I do not meet your exacting standards.
Cheers.

If you have a 6606, then you are in North America, (Canada / US). Please check if your bootloader status is locked or not. You probably need to unlock your bootloader first from your wireless provider first.
And I agree with the others, you're rude, brash, you disregard advice and need to search/check b4 posting.......
Dead Cookies leave no trails...
@spazzy1912
He posted there as well, I just saw this one first. Instead of just telling him to post in the correct place, I thought I would be nice and give him what he wanted.
I won't make that mistake again.
@Cookie Ninja
The C6606 bootloader is permanently locked. There is no way to unlock it and neither Sony or T-Mobile will help.
Sony will blame T-Mobile for requesting that their branded variant has a non-unlockable bootloader and T-Mobile don't have the means to change it.
Hey guys, how's it going?
Well, I recently bought an HTC One M8. It is the Sprint Variant I believe. So it was an unlocked version with ViperOne 1.7.0 installed. I checked for updates and found there was an update for 1.8.0, to which I instantly updated. I was aware that Viper 2.4.0 is available for the device too, hence my question is if it's okay to update to flash/update full ROMs to this unlocked M8? I am aware that I would lose the unlock on non Sense based ROMs though. So, is there anything I should consider/remember before flashing the full ROM to the device?
Another problem I am facing is with achieving S Off. I am aware about what all of this is as I have always been involved with such things but always with factory unlocked variants. Anyway, I tried the firewater method, for at least 10 times but everytime it says that it can't S Off my device. (Screenshot Attached)

Is there something I can do about this? Anyone who had faced this and resolved it?
Other than these two little issues, my final question is that IF in case anything goes wrong, would a Nandroid Backup restore my phone to the current state INCLUDING the SIM Unlock?
In simpler terms, can anyone tell me what all can and can not affect the SIM unlock on my device? Kernels, ROMs, Mods, etc?
I did a lot of search before posting this thread (two nights) and found answers to many other questions and doubts but not to these three. Sorry if these are all actually noob questions. Thank you!

Only way to achieve soff is sunshine in conditions like you. It works like a charm. if you would have problem with sim unlock, Then, flash Bad Boyz rom and follow the instruction at second post. Just past same path 4 days ago
I would definitely do all of this but now I have another problem. I attempted to change runtime on Venom 1.8.0 but now it wouldn't reboot. Doesn't go past "HTC One" screen on boot. Can't try any other ROM because my broadband is having troubles. *sad*

Their is a small zip to change runtime back to dalvik it's your best choice or reflash the Rom next time do a nandroid before doing that. Your phone will not boot because you have a tweak or theme/mod that art doesn't like.. good luck remember the zip is in the read me section of viperrom.

NE3 (kitkat) which is easily rootable, which you can then go to lollipop (and keep root) easily enough from there, should you wish. MF1 is ancient, no wonder it's giving you issues.
Even if you don't need or want root, go with NE3. It's the most stable of the recent builds, and from there you can either stay on kitkat or easily upgrade to lollipop, with or without root.

I would strongly recommend using Odin v3.09 if you aren't already, I have it for you if you need. Yes I realize the picture shows 3.07 but trust me I've done this a million times
Alright I'm gonna do it right now hopefully no errors occur I'm gonna post to tell you what happens
Oh! I should mention, when you do this, your phone will automatically reboot on its own a couple times, and one of those times will be to the stock android recovery. This is completely normal, just leave your phone alone and let Odin do its thing. I say this because I've seen so many people freak out when their phone starts doing stuff on its own. Just let Odin go, it knows what it's doing. Good luck!
