First I know, I could search and search and find out most if not everything I want, please if thats all you have to say... save me the e-mail and just move on. I am looking for what people like and dislike.
Second I did not put this in the Development part cuz well this is just questions.
Ok, So I moved to the Pre about 3 months ago just for fun and to test it out but well after helping co workers with there Droids and playing with the Eris for a little bit I MISS android so I am moving back to the Hero this weekend.
I was running DC and like it but it would seem things have come along in the past 3 months. And wanted to know what ROM people we liking and what ROM (in there minds) ram better or faster with less bugs.
My wish list is:
Everything works most of all
To have the 2.1 lock screen (clear)
To be able to over clock (How high can it be OCed?)
The Launcher that comes with 2.2 (3 main buttons at bottom)
Most of the other things I care about I can do with a theme. I was making a theme to put out just before moving to the Pre so I will see that files have changed and get back to it.
Also has there been any word or the Hero getting 2.2?
If it's just questions, you should put it in the questions part.
Also, Darchdroid is what you want.

Seconded. Been running it for more than 24 hours now and looove it.
To the separate questions you have listed.
1. Darchdroid includes this stock, every rom is capable of it. Just delete the htclockscreen.apk
2. Depends on your hero. Some can take higher clocks then others. The highest clock speed a cdma htc hero can take thats beneficial is 768mhz. Anything higher then that the results will either be the same as 768mhz or worse. The limitation is the fsb on our heros. Right now we dont know how to change it or maybe we wont ever be able to.
3. ADW launcher from the market is what you are looking for. Darchdroid includes this stock along with another launcher. But adw launcher is downloadable from the market and can be used on any rom.
Also damage control has come a longgg way since 3months ago. Its not the same rom, and its probably the most user friendly rom. Its based on the sprints newest 2.1 release, so its not a mush of different things like 3 months ago. It also comes with an app that lets you change advanced features on the phone with the push of a button.
Darchdroid is going to be your smoothest running rom since it has almost zero bloat-ware and has zero htc sense ui.
Hero 2.2 is very doubtful coming from sprint. But as soon as source is released or a phone running very similar hardware as the hero gets 2.2, it will be ported to our phone and will be 95% working if not 100%.

Thanks! Yeah I just seen the Q&A part. Seems a bit has changed just on how the site if for the Hero. Nice to see the Hero have its own part!

Great input, thanks! After installing 2.2 on a friends Droid I see now real need for Sense, well other than I kind of like the helicopter mode and some the the widgets that come with it. I tend to like the more plane/dark look so peep was good for me and the quick contact, calender and clock were great. (after a few changes that is).

I was wondering if there is one hero rom out there that is not slooooow. I tried bunch of them, jachero, drizy full and now I have drizy superlite which is working ok, just little lag when using browser and downside is that it doesnt have touchflo.
I'm using setcpu and swapper but every hero rom is so slow, like typing a message and then going back to the homescreen takes a good minute.
Also flash is horrible, flash video is not smooth at all. Even skyfire does flash video better.
I was just wondering if there is one truly smooth working hero rom out.
If not, then i'm going back to cupcake or a cynagon modified rom.
Whoa one day and you realise that hero on the g1 is worthless, good job, all heros are slow and laggy, which is why I tried to steer you away from it but everybody wants to check it out for themselves. You can try a linux-swap partion of 96mb and a swapiness of 60, it will speed it up a bit but not all that much better. Go back to a cupcake rom that is meant for the phone and you will be much happier.
if you want aesthetics you go for a hero rom. if you want performance you go for a cupcake build. really was this all that necessary. some people claim that they have a fast hero build and maybe with their exact set up they do have what they would consider a fast hero rom, but every phone acts differently. please stop making threads that ask basically the same question. I just typed "hero" into the search this forum option and it gave me 18 pages of threads.

Amen... Hero isnt meant to run on the G1, our hardware specs arent up to par to what it would take to smoothly run the basic OS, let alone Sense UI. From the reviews I've read even Hero isnt running the Hero rom as smoothly as it probably should.
And david... its kinda a catch 22... I agree there are way too many posts on the same crap... but I also think that no one wants to sit there for hours readign through 18 pages to find out whether or not their question has been answered. I think a major cleanup of these forums is extremely necessary.

It's best not to use any CPU apps on Hero, the ROMs are already optimized for best CPU performance. So clocking to 528 will not only drain your battery faster but probably slow your phone down too.
Don't use swapper either. If you have a linux-swap partition (which you really should) it will automatically be utilized. It's best to keep it between 32-64mb. Don't go crazy and make it 96 or 128, because it won't make your phone any faster and has been known to cause "ghost" lag.
Yes, the Hero browser is slow as a *****. That's why I always push back the cupcake one, because it's useable and you can use the freakin' status bar.
I would wait for JacxHero 1.6r2. Apparently the kernels that have been cooked from the HTC source code that was released yesterday are blazing fast.
my sum up is the second to last paragraph if you don't want to read everything.
i need help. i'm tired and on my last end of flashing roms. i flash at least 8 times a day a different rom to try them out and see which one is the best. so i'm coming out to ask everyone.
i don't want to really make a new thread about this but i just hate having to start all over with loading apps and getting my settings all ready.
my question to you all is which rom is the fastest rom out now. pure speed and reliable. i wanted to try the overclocked ones but not feeling to comfortable with my camera not working. i also have a garbage sd card so that doesn't help. i will get a real one soon but not for now. i don't really use my camera but you know when you get caught up in the moment and say oh look. and you take out the phone and bam"oh wait. my camera doesn't work" unless i can dual boot my hero with 1.6 with is super tiny????
i have tried all the roms already but i would like to hear from the community which rom do they think is the best.
i multitask alot where i will use the navigator and listen to music i will even go on a website and answer a texts all at the same time. i know that's alot asking from the hero but it's frustating to me when i'm in the car using the navigatoin and bam it closes on me cause i have alot of apps open.
another problem i have is when i get an incoming message using handset and trying to type on the keyboard. it is just so many words behind when i am typing and i just want a good rom that works. so if you can recommend the best fastest keyboard out i don't care about vibration but i do care about the sound. that's very important to me.
i don't want to name any roms out or call them out but i really like the ereis leak from damaged 1.1v but it is a battery leak on it that prevented me from staying on that rom....
what do you think of using the 1.6 rom that is bone stock and dry and adding stuff in it????
i need help choosing the fastest keyboard with as less lag as posible. i don't care if i have to buy it or not. i don't want to use swipe yet so i don't want to put that in the equation. i would like the fastest most stable rom here that can multiask and receive text using the handset pop up with no slow down. if anyone knows about the battery drain in the eris leak damaged 1.1beta and can fix it let me know....
thanks you so much,. i love my hero. and i love all the devolopers that spend there own time making roms for us to have the best experience posible. if it wasn't for them(there's alot. you know how you are) we would be sitting om hero's that can't send or receive mms, old 1.5 rom, buggy. battery dying in 3 hours. and alot more. i use 1.5 for about 3 days so i don't know all the problems the stock rom had but i know it's alot.

im running out the door but i wanted to respond to one thing you said. The AOSP 1.6 is a great rom, and you can reall customize it to your needs. Very fast. Im waiting for the 2.1 fully working AOSP, like you, i need camera. If you are looking to stay in 2.1, ive tried a few and found alyoious or whatever to be very relieable, stylish and fast.

honestly if you think 1.6 aosp is the fastest rom out there and you really highly recommend it i will try it out fully. i only used it for a couple minutes when trying to get the market place apps in.
what would you say is the cons about going to 1.6 from 2.1????

Cons? No lwp. (anyway, lwp's aren't great on our phones, kinda sluggish, amirite?) Make sure you flash the googlebits
ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=5195520

Thanks alot. i really thank you.
i don't care about live wallpaper compared to performance. i read that thread that you gave me and i have a question.
what is the difference between that 1.6 and this
unless they are the same. i will do a research on what google bits is all about....
also can i have voice navigation on 1.6 using google maps??? if not i can just use sprint nav....
question. i looked some more in that thread and saw that some stuff isn't working. i think i should try the one i have first andd see what happens right????
if you want to wait for 2.1 to come out officially, i will recommend the pancake 1.5 rom without sense. it is by far the fastest, most stable rom ive run and with autokiller set to extreme this sucker flies.
you just keep on bring more and more questions in my head.
i thought 1.5 was just completely bugged out with the problems thats why everyone lefted???
i cant find the pancake rom with no sense. i will miss it but if the performance increase is huge then i won't miss it that much. lol.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=639278&highlight=pancake
enjoy! i have had zero bugs with this rom.
question. i had 1.6 in my mind and how it is the perfect rom and you popped up with 1.5 and i'm afraid to use it because bugs it came with before.
so would you recommend this over the 1.6 that is 16mb big????
and if so then which pancake would you recommend i would like to keep sense but if no sense is ALOT faster and MUCH BETTER with battery life then i will go stock....

go with whatever you wish but ive run this rom longer than any other. i personally don't like sense at all myself so it's your choice in the long run, sense does chew up ram so remember that. there has been zero bugs that i have found and i have a ton of free ram left and great battery life. the closest ive had to the pancake rom in terms of performance is fresh 2.0d.
ok. this is what i will do. i will download pancake 1.5 no sense and keep it on my sd card.
i want to try 1.6 to get it out my head if it is good or not. if i find any bugs i will flash over to pancake. lol.
last question. is your mms good and can i use 2.1 vanilla lock screen. i really like it.
i'm so happy.
i like how you said the closes you had to your pancake is fresh 2.0d but you flashed back to pancake so i'll also put that up there but that's if i am not happy with pancake.

no vanilla lockscreen im afraid on 1.5 but there is clear ones you can get on here if you search. mms has been fine for me.
thanks man. you have helped me out a bunch. i will try 1.6 to get it out my head if it isn't good. pancake it is. i'm so happy. i wish i could rep you.
i have a question. i'm loving 1.5 performance and the battery life is great.
i'm using the sense one because the stock 1.5 was alittle bland. but the marketplace is alittle dull
so i have wondering if there is a nice 1.6 build thats very good.
i also notice that multi-touch isn't on in 1.5 unless it is the keyboard i'm using. i'm i wrong???
Hey guys.
Well, I used to own an HTC Titan, and I would just spend days and days flashing and cooking ROMs like no one's business, but due to cost issues and general irritation with that phone, I switched to a flip phone for a while. Now, I'm back, on Sprint with a CDMA Hero and an unlimited data plan and I want to really see what this thing can do.
Yes, I have the Sprint 2.1 update and I've rooted it successfully. However, for some reason, everything felt a bit sluggish so I factory restored. (Don't know how to explain this, but kinda regretting it when I see all these custom ROMs floating around). Now, I want to get back into ROM flashing.
I wanted to get your guys' opinion on what ROM to use. I do have just one condition though, so hear me out before you tell me which one you love .
Simply put, I love HTC Sense. I've used my friend's Samsung Moment and I could not stand the UI. Sense, to me, has a sort of refinement I've grown to love. (just the way I am, I guess. So yeah, by extension, I don't want or need JiT. I've seen the differences in linpack tests and I'm not impressed enough to ditch Sense for it. Also, does Sense have to be cooked into a ROM by default or can I flash it in as an addon?
So what are your picks? I'd love to have something fast.
Damn another one of these. Go with fresh 2.od with the two updates. or with actually it depends what you like most of the overclocked roms are good but they have one setback when you push menu or the power button to get them to turn on there is a delay. but other than that there good and fast. I like zenexp slide port because it has this thing called mymodes where you can change your themes on the spot. It's hard to describe but it's good

@OP - Fresh 2.1.2. If you want friendstream JsChiSurf has a mod to fresh that makes it work. I am running it now but am having issues with gmail not giving me notifications. Which is a HUGE deal.
Ill throw my rom in there. It has sense and is based off of fresh 2.1.2 but ovetclocked and fully themed. Not for everyone but its there.

Try fresh2.3.3. I've been using it for a week, and it's pretty cool.

Just wanted to say that I used to LOVE Htc Sense as well... I've reverted to AOSP based roms such as PureHero or Cyanogenmod 6.0.0 - reasoning why is that I feel that Sense really bogs down the phone and I feel like my Htc Hero responses a whole lot better and smoother as well.
Hi guys. Hopefully this is the correct board to post in. I'm a former fan of CyanogenMod. I used the old CyanogenMod builds that ran Android 2.1, but when 2.2 came out, I jumped to a rooted stock 2.2 ROM.
After trying CyanogenMod 6, I'm pretty disappointed. It felt much slower than stock, and it no longer had the CyanogenMod feel.
Anyhow, are there any developers that actually make clean and stable ROMs? With every N1 ROM I've looked at, the developers seem obsessed with changing the Android GUI around, and not adding more important features.
There really seems to be no ROM that keeps the default Android GUI look and feel, but adds things like a percentage in the battery icon, a white-on-black Messaging app tweak, and some of the under-the-hood performance tweaks.
Maybe I'm just angry, and maybe no one shares the same sentiments as me, but I'm just curious to hear back from others. Am I going to have to bake my own ROM to get what I want?
Thanks in advance anyone who took the time to read my rant.
Edit: I wanted to note, after seeing a friend's Motorola Droid with the BuglessBeast 2.2 ROM on it, that looks like almost exactly what I'm looking for. Unfortunately, that seems to be a Droid-specific ROM.
Push Mms.apk from latest CM6.0.0-RC1 to whatever ROM you wish, and you got the black background in MMS.
There are some close-to-stock ROMs, like Geo411m's.
Personally, I use LeoFroyo with black bar until CM supports SD-EXT in framework, that would be a good enough reason to switch. I'm already tempted to switch to have browser enhancements, but I don't feel it's a good enough reason by itself. For some reason, Browser.apk crashes when pushed, probably has some CM-only framework dependencies.
I'm a fan of Kang o Rama
I'm really liking Geo411m's ROM, aside from the trackball-unlock (no way to disable it as far as I can find?).
Maybe I should just learn to bake my own ROMs-- I don't really want much past the stock ROM, just a couple things, really.
There wouldn't happen to be any informative threads on how to do so? I looked around but couldn't find much.

There is no one ROM that is perfect for everyone. Maybe you guys are new to Android and this is your first device. Maybe you've just been spoiled with the variety of developer support... but most of us former G1 owners who rooted were very adept at picking bits from various ROMs and pushing those bits into a developed ROM that was already largely what we were looking for. I remember downloading and pulling out frameworks, changing icons, pulling/pushing apps, etc. That way, you end up with EXACTLY what you want. Perfect example... I was reading comments on Engadget to Cyanogen's latest Froyo build for the G1, and some ass complained about the "ugly" rounded notification bar. All he has to do is push over one or two files from any of a gazillion other ROMs and he'd have his original notification bar back.
Think of custom ROMs as a starting point... and then find and push the parts of other ROMs that you really like over a good custom ROM. You'll learn a lot and end up self-sufficient. You'll probably also feel very proud of doing some of the work personally.
ummm, what exactly is wrong with MoDaCo ROMs? modaco's philosophy is being as close as possible to a stock ROM, with just a few improved tweaks. modaco ROMs are like stock ROMs. you tried this?

Try Modaco's roms, their basically stock, just rooted. His was the first one I tried, but I switched to evil because I like black status bar and theme. Modaco's roms are not themed, and the same way stock is set up his is set up, nothing extra. If I did'nt like my roms themed, I would definitely rock one of his for sure.
Using geomod411's rom myself. Added a2ext support and it's all good. It's practically stock so I'll be looking to add things like black mms later.

Push Mms.apk from latest CM6.0.0-RC1 to whatever ROM you wish, and you got the black background in MMS.

I tried this but it didn't work. I had to push it from Recovery because when the phone was on I kept getting an error about it being read-only.
adb push Mms.apk /system/app/Mms.apk
Worked in recovery... but my text messaging interface has not changed. It's still the stock/white.
EDIT: Did it a ghetto way. Used Root Explorer, removed /system/app/Mms.apk -- then installed the Mms.apk that I pulled out of the CM6 zip. That worked.
Are you seriously complaining about Cyanogens CM6 RC1?... You do know what RC1 means right?
Anyway, CM6 is the best release of 2.2 for N1 out there.. it's just in a working stage now and there are allot of things to fix... that's why it is a Release Candidate... and it was in Alpha testing not long ago.
If you want a clean and simple go back to stock...

I use modaco with desire theme. You can add any theme you want with metamorph.
I have an HTC Hero and one of my many questions is do you think Sprint and HTC will make a Hero 2 ... maybe with a 3.5" or lil bigger (not a monster sized phone) with either a good 1ghz processor or even a dual core and maybe keep the "track Ball" but lose all the other buttons make them all capacitive touch ..... thoughts or opinions ?
I do believe that the Hero has been very successful for both HTC and Sprint.
Ok back to me and My Hero I am not a developer and I am new to the rom switching game. I love the crisp look of the factory Sense UI, but I am one of those types that sees things differently. I look at things and say to myself how could we improve on this or how can we make it faster and keep it looking good. I found this website, and pretty much changed my Hero into a Super Hero so to say.
I also would like to say thanks to all of the great developers on the CDMA Hero side, so far I have tried almost every variety of rom and different mod on my Hero (have screenshots once I get out of the probation period I will post them)
So far I figured out the easiest way for me to root my hero is with one of two I found floating around these forums, Hero Root by regaw leinad or super1click v1.7 ..... I also figured out that firerat's mod is easier the data2ext if your nat really familiar with adb. I also have found three more programs to help a lot, droid explorer, android commander and qtadb.
My question to all Hero owners what do you think is the best all around ROM, Gapps, and other mods as of May 8th 2011? (I am just looking for opinions I read almost every thread on this site and I would just like to see it all together call me lazy)
All this and I have not "bricked" my Hero .... must be one tough s.o.b.
To answer your first question, I just don't see a revised Hero in the works. It has a been a great phone for many users and Sprint alike I'm sure, but the Hero is not likely to reappear simply because it doesn't really conform to what HTC is doing with most of their phones now (4-4.3 inches, capacitive buttons, similar super thin form factor). I definitely don't think they would put a trackball in, because even if there were a trackpad on a new device it's almost guaranteed to be optical. If there were to be a refresh, I definitely think we would have heard something by now considering the lifespan of the Hero.
As for roms, I'd definitely suggest playing around with AOSP or CM7 versions of Gingerbread. You may find that you prefer greater customizations than you get with Sense. However, if you really really dig Sense and would much rather have it, there's a great group of guys developing Sense 2.1 for Gingerbread on the Hero. It's in Alpha right now, but even considering that, it's a fantastic piece of work. As far as Gapps go, I would just stick to the latest ones provided at the Cyanogenmod wiki. I don't really apply other mods as I personally don't think I need any, but YMMV.
i for one love the design its the perfect size for me and as far as the processor goes once i overclocked it a little bit its plenty fast enough for me because i dont really install a ton of apps and as far as gaming goes i have a ps3 for that lol so it really is the perfect phone for me all the new ones are just to big i think.
and ive had the hero sense september and i had a mt3g before that.
OMGB
I have been running OMGB for the past 8 hrs I am using wifi only browsed the web for a while, cut grass listened to some MP3's and browsed the web some more and more MP3's I listened to MP3's for a couple hours (with the MIUI player found in the forums) and it shows pretty good battery life
I would also like to add that I am using the
opengles tweak to show supported version 1.1 (not 100% sure why I did it ... maybe just to say I did it successfully)
s0be's kernel AP5, unCoRrUpTeD data2ext V2.2, and the MIUI music player and camera apks
I like the bare minimalist look and feel this rom has, but I still dont have a true favorite .... variety is such a sweet thing and all these choices .... and most of the people I know dont even know what an HTC Hero is .... if its not a iLemon or if it doesnt say DROID (like in the commercials) they just dont "get it"
ok found the first flaw ..... lol
my market says verizon where i would normaly see Sprint and had my first FC
