strange issues - buttons don't work in recovery?? - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm having some really strange issues with my HTC Dream (rooted and running CM 5.0.8 T4.)
The most annoying is that most times when I boot into recovery (RA 1.7.0 - MD5 checked and re-flashed) the buttons and trackball do not work!!! If the phone is left to itself after a few minutes it boots by itself into the OS, but sometimes not, hanging indefinitely at the HTC Dream screen. A battery pull usually gets it to boot properly but not always.
Other problems include spontaneous random reboots' and really irritatingly, a complete failure to wake up (no response from any buttons, phone appears dead but if I've received an email just before then an LED flashes) - have to pull the battery again. When sucessfully booted all the hardware works fine!
I've wiped fully, formatted SD and re-flashed a few times but still the same, this started about 10 days ago after a few weeks happily running CM 5.0.7 (before I tried 5.0.8 T4)
Sometimes the phone will go for many hours/days with no problems
There's no 'last_kmsg' in /proc/ (only kmsg = 0 bytes) and nothing in 'data/dontpanic/'?
What on EARTH is going on?
[edit] can't get a logcat 'cos it seems to always wake up when connected to USB...

Just reverted back to stock (cupcake 1.5) and everything is fine so it must be something on the software side. Odd!

Help? Battery/Software/SD?

So I've been lurking around this forum ever since the G1 first came out. Messed up on the rooting procedure once, got a replacement a few months ago.
Worked fine so far. A while ago, I flashed the latest SuperD rom. I am using an 8gig SD card. I've overcharged my battery several times by accident, so the health isn't exactly up to out-of-the-box standards.
I noticed the phone entered a random reboot when I turned the music on for a while. As time passed, the random reboots became more and more frequent. Since I couldn't keep the phone on for more than 20 seconds without a reboot, I decided to wipe and flash a new rom today.
I chose Pays 1.6 Rom and flashed that. Didn't wipe my ext4, just wiped and flashed. I figured ext4 wouldn't cause such a problem, so I ignored it for now. Problem not solved.
I turn the phone on, and in the few seconds, I noticed the following:
the apps all show up, meaning the phone reads the ext4 apps (right?.)
The sd card itself displays an error - I can't access music, pics, etc.
Phone service is fine, all apps are normal.
Buuuut there's still that random reboot issue. It reboots, enters a G1 screen, then reboots quicker. In other words, after I take the battery out and reboot, it might take maybe 1 minutes before it auto-reboots. I wait, then it reboots in maybe 30 seconds. And faster and faster, until it doesn't respond anymore and I have to take the battery out again.
I'm not sure what I do causes random reboots. Sometimes it's when I press a button while in the music app. Sometimes it's when I open the keyboard. Sometimes it's just when the screen goes to sleep. It's fairly random.
I can go into recovery (once I take the battery out once.) Fastboot also works.
Running the danger SPL and the second to latest radio (I believe a new one came out recently? Mine's the one with 26)
Help please? What part of my phone is broken?
I'll give additional information if asked. Not sure what parts are relevant.
Sound's like Kernel panic. Wipe everything and install soemthing stable like cyanogens 4.2.15.1 or dwangs rom. Didn't know there was anything worng with SuperD's kernel though.

Since the rom relies on apps to sd I would guess the ext is borked and maybe the fat32 as well. I would reformat the whole thing to fat 32 then reformat to ext2 or 3. Load Dwangs rom for testing (easier to get running just as a test).
So I wiped my SD (ext4, dalvik, fat32) and tried cyanogen. Then I tried Pays. Reboot problem's gone, but neither of them is reading my SD card.
I'm assuming its just a matter of backing up the SD and repartitioning? I'll try that next when I have time.
Thanks for the help guys! Lastly, any ideas on why this happened? It'd be hard to pinpoint the exact reason, but I'm assuming I'm not the only one who had this problem - how did other people get to the situation I'm in?
I wiped all of my SD, repartitioned, wiped the phone, flashed AOSP 1.6. w/ root and "expansion" pack.
Reboots are less frequent, but they still occur too often. They don't occur by themselves - its always when I'm using my phone.
It seems that it reboots more when its connected to my computer. The SD isn't mounted, but the simple fact that its connected seems to trigger reboots more frequently. Is this a coincidence or can a USB cord trigger reboots?
Help please
EDIT: The phone just made an audible cracking sound as it rebooted - like someone stepping on gravel. Hardware issue?

G1 issues

Hi Guys,
I have been running the Cyanogen 4.2.15.1 rom for some time with no problem. Recently I updated my radio to the 2.22.23.02 and it significantly improved my 3G signal, that siad the problem has occured before I made this update but no as often.
When I settled on a theme I wiped the phone, re-installed cyanogen then wiped and installed the theme(Darkstar 1.07R2), since then the phone has been freezing randomly, yesterday I pressed the menu button and the call lights came on but the screen stayed blank, I waited for 30 secs or so but nothing so I did a battery pull and rebooted. It took a while after it booted before I was able to do anything but back to normal again.
Then a few hours later I went to make a call and this time the screen came on but was black with a line just right of centre again a battery pull and all is well.
Since then everything has been ok, anyone else having these issues have search but cannot find anything.
Thanks In Advance

[Q] JPM/JPK *vibrates* once in awhile during sleep?!!

As far as I'm concerned, I notice JPM/JPK Roms (I have applied tayutama 1.0.0 and voodoo kernel pre6) has this VIBRATE issue when the phone goes into sleep.
In details:
When the screen goes off (black), in a few seconds, the phone will have a slight vibrate.
If you turn on the screen and play around with it and let it sleep again (screen goes off), in few seconds it will still vibrate again!!
Not only a few seconds after phone sleep it will vibrate, I notice the phone will vibrate on its own (phone is sleep) once in awhile in no specific duration
Anybody experiencing this can let me know what causes it? I do not know whether stock ROMs have this problem coz I always flash another ROM (mostly to deodex) over my stock ROM with either lagfix or voodoo kernel applied right after
I would appreciate if we investigate it in details if this issue is confirmed
have same problem with jp6 firmware ,have posted in jp6 firmware topic about it
Oh, I think this issue is serious enough to have a thread on its own
Anyway do we have a solution/workaround for it so far? Would love to solve this 'bug' as it's kinda annoying at times...
Yep, I get that too, on JP6 .. and all in all.. I am really pissed right now, Voodoo pre6 F***ed up my radio connection .. it detects networks in 3 4 minutes, it connects and then it disconnects in a matter of seconds,...,,, mothaxxxxx
Same problem here with JPM. Im using sztupy 0.1 experimenatal rom, but after reading your posts it seems clear that its not a problem of his room
It's dreaming leave it alone.
Wifes phone refused to send text early this evening, turned phone off, phone has failed to restart since, gets stuck at start up logo and just keeps randomly vibrating.
The phone is running froyo jp6 on voda network
Usually a random vibrate means a process is crashing or has a serious error. Use the alogcat or adb logcat to look at the log immediately after this happens, or if there's nothing there look in the kernel log with "adb shell dmesg".
Got phone to boot but everything is gone, with out a factory reset even external sd card has been blanked out . Missus is well pi#$ed off
Time to go buy her that Iphone 4 shes always wanted Or get used to sleeping in dog house. Your call

[Q] Random semi-brick

I woke up this morning and my phone would not boot. it would get past the Orange boot screen, as i am locked to Orange, and then i t would get to the sgs boot screen and stay there for about 5 minutes, then finally turning itself off along with a few random vibrations. I kept trying to turn it on, i tried numerous ways such as taking the external sd and sim card out, taking the battery out for 2 hours but the same thing kept happening. My phone was not rooted and has never been hacked in anyway, i have had this phone not long. It was working fine the night before. I fixed this by going into recovery mode, as i could get into both recovery and download mode fine, and i restored to factory settings from that. Now it works fine. Anyone know what was up with it and how i can fix it without restoring if it happens again. I didn't look it up when it was happening as i didnt have access to the computer,
Thanks
What you describe sound like a bootloop, which could be caused by many things, if it recurs my suggestion is to take it back to orange and insist on replacement/fix. I was with orange but hacked my way out of their crap software ages ago!

[Q] Screen won't turn on, phone still on - any ideas ?

The phone works fine from boot up but as soon as the screen times out (doesn't mattter how long) it won't come back on again for about 2 hours.
It was running stock GB, unlocked but not rooted & has been working fine on that ROM for months (I got it in Jan 10, so it is now 18 months old).
Yesterday I downgraded to a stock Froyo & went through the installation / set up process, let the screen time out & it again won't turn on.
All of the buttons seem to work OK, power on works fine to turn it on from cold, the volume buttons work fine & the trackball is working.
I have tried pulling the battery, SIM & MicroSD, none of this seems to work.
Apart from sending it somewhere (don't really know where) is there anything I can try that has worked for anyone else ?
Well I've herd of this before but can't remember what fixed it (or if it got fixed) so lets start with factory reset then if that doesn't work try passimg because before you send it to htc for a repair there going to ask you to wipe anyway.
