[Q] What you get if install custom kernel?

ehm... i am newbe...i dont know what will improve if we install new kernel or custom kernel ?

ok ... i will delete this..
MOD: please move it to general...
Kernels have much more possibilities to make our phone better and faster than only roms.
Read 1st post of kernel threads to see what functions are added.
@faqihul:
You canĀ“t delete threads, only mods can do this.
To answer your question:
Custom kernels have more special features, and they also make your phone smoother!Try it out!

[Kernel][OC][11/24/11]The Doom Kernel V0.3 BETA

Doom Kernel V0.3
Apparently on the Xperia forums DooMLord has a kernel out called DooMKernel as well. This is in no way affiliated with that. I may change mine to Doom Boot or Doomed Kernel but for now he asked me to make a note like this so here it is.
First, I would like to give a big THANKS to Echts for helping me with repacking the boot.img and get this thing bootable...
Second, THANKS to tekahuna for the OC modules
This kernel contains OC and non OC versions. Speed tweaks, memory tweaks and network tweaks have been included after V0.1. All the non OC versions include all the tweaks.
V0.3 Now increases SDcard read write cache from 128kb to 4096kb
I appreciate any feedback I can get from this. It will work with ANY FROYO rom this is NOT a GB kernel.
How to install:
1) Download
2) Flash in CWM
3) Enjoy your OC kernel

CHANGELOG
V0.3 Added SDcard Read/Write speed increase
V0.2 Added lowmemorykiller settings
Added ADJ tweaks
Added Network tweaks
Tweaked Wifi supplicant scan settings in kernel itself
No more lags when installing apps from market.
V0.1 Stock Kernel with OC at 1.18GHz
I tip my hat to you sir. Looking forward to tinkering with kernel code and working on optimizations along the way.
What's the maximum overclock rate? 1.5GHz?
Will thus also work on Thriller rom?

Nooooo as of right now, testing tekahuna's modules, 1.23Ghz was as far as I could push without reboots and FC's.
Sorry forgot to mention that. Right now it is at what tekahuna calls the sweet spot of 1188MHz or 1.18GHz. That is the max as this is just a test speeds will increase slowly. Other tweaks and features will be added slowly.

Yes it will work with any of the thrill roms should work with O3D roms as well AS LONG AS IT IS FROYO this will not work on GB it is a froyo only kernel. Any rom in the Thrill development section will be fine.
How did you manage to get the boot.img repacked? I started trying to use mkimage instead of mkbootimg but to no avail. I have tinkered with all the different settings. Basically I'm just curious what you put for -a , -e , -d , and -C , because I can't get mine to repack. Also, how did you order the various inputs. Because, I just keep getting a usage output. And when I don't get that and it seems to run, still no new boot.img is created.
Thanks.
Sent from my LG-P925 using xda premium
I will be writing up a nice tutorial here soon. You have to edit unpack-bootimg.pl and like you said the mkimage command has to be just right. Once you get it down the unpacking and repacking is a snap takes no time. It's the adjusting things and what not that becomes the most work.
Beta version 0.2 now contains OC at same clock speed (will release different clock speeds once testing phase is done) also has adjustments to lowmemorykiller, adj, network speeds. Slowly but surely moving along don't want to do too much at once just tweaking a bit then test, tweak a bit more then test. Safest route.
Thank you!
Word. A good how to is definitely needed for working with the Thrill Boot.img. I figured that it couldn't be too difficult. I just feel like i have tried every possible combination for the repacking. But im sure i am just missing something simple. Im assuming the Unpack edit is to change the initial data stripping from 2048 to 76? For now im gonna just include your boot.img that you posted here in my rom im working on (as long as that is cool with you...).
Props to you though for figuring it out...
And thanks to Echts and others for their assistance...
Thanks dude!
So glad that the thrill development scene is finally starting to take off!
Please do, anything I release is free and open to use. That's why we are here right?
And I didn't figure the repack out, it was armcee (sp?) Ricardo that figured it out, he just merely passed the info down the line it finally made it to me lol I actually gave credit to Echts over on O3D forum because he passed the info on to me.
I have to say, the V0.2 kernel definitely speeds things up. Apps run faster, load faster, it's nice... very nice. This is what I have been waiting for, kernel tweaking.

Its kind of hard for me to tell because I have been flashing a lot of things. For what I am doing it seems to last a while. Try it out if you don't like it flash back to stock.
Testing the new Kernel, so far i love it, running SetCPU to keep tabs on CPU... Excellent job @Urabewe
cant wait to see if we can get more frequencies to test the OMAP4 processor... make this phone FLY!!!
nice kernel man but Battery drain seems a little high. well it is a no brainer when OC it take more battery power
Yes it's still a work in progress I did notice a bit of extra drain, I am going to release another kernel that's is not OC but contains the speed boosts. I'm hoping that will cure a bit of the battery problem while still keeping the what I think is incredible speed boost.
Also, can anyone else confirm that the delay/lag while installing apps from the market is basically gone with governor on hotplug max at 1188? I have installed about 5 apps and was trying to see how bad the lag was and didn't really experience any.
Well it's official I am calling it a feature... no more lags when installing from market. Phone remains nice and smooth. This kernel combined with Doomed Froyo Slim (which btw includes this kernel in the rom) has no lags and if you can find any lags in any programs or with the launcher let me know.

Not being rude at all but please read through at the very least the 1st post before asking questions. 2.3.5 is GB this only works with 2.2.2 I will be releasing a 2.3.5 GB kernel soon that one you will be able to use.

Some questions before burn again my phone XD

Well,
Rigth now i have android 4.0 in my captivate, but it has a lot of bugs, with the audio, music, and sometimes just close the app just because!!
I decided to change the rom for another newer, but i don't know a lot of this world, and i have some questions that somebody experiment can easily answer.
When i dont know a lot of what the kernel do for the phone, but do i really need change the kernel?? Because the last time i tried with semaphore but i briked my phone.
If i need to change the kernel, could some body tell me te more stable for android 4.1 or 4.2
Second question.
I want another ROM which one is the more stable and with better performance, i dont want any spectacular, but with a good performance and all working its enougth for me.
And the last one.
How can i save my apps to reinstall all again, i mean i'm working bad piggies and where is may water, and i dont want to lose my levels jaja.
Thanks again for your time its really a lot of help for me.
Sent from my SGH-I897 using xda app-developers app
No need to change kernel.
CM10.0 stable rom. It is 4.1.2 os.
You can read other threads on how to use Titanium backup or other tools to preserve your user data and user apps. Don't try to restore system apps to a new rom, though. if you have given google permission to backup your data, it may already be restored when you reinstall the app from google play.
You will still want to do a full factory wipe, followed by flashing the correct gapps package. you can find all the instructions and links in the CM10.0 thread in the captivate development forum.
If you want to go to 4.2, I've found the CM10.1 nightlies to be very stable. There's a separate thread for it with links, etc.
Thanks for your answer, and thanks for the extra of read my post because my english is too bad jaja.
Another question, why the developers create new kernels if we can work with the same for a lot of roms, i mean what things make better some kernel from another??

Each kernel has its different characterstic, like on can help you overclock your device while some help to give good battery backup and they make our phones more stable

or less stable . .
driving new features or higher performance is often, but not always, accompanied by a loss of stability, at least for a few revs.
imho, the base kernel in cm is excellent for someone whose chief concern is simplicity and stability, without a burning desire to be at the bleeding edge.
that said, the semaphore and others do have some added tweaks that can do just what you said.

I think I should have been more clear in my first response.
When you flash cm10, you will be flashing a new rom that includes a new kernel that is different than the one you have now.
I thought you were asking about flashing a kernel as a standalone, such as semaphore kernel, rather than a complete rom.
When I said you do not need to change the kernel, I meant that once you flash a complete cm10 rom, you do not need to change the kernel.
For a ROM, I highly reccomend sephhi's captivating (4.2.2 with xperia theming and very much aimed at performance and battery life) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2057574
This is the answer!!!
Excelent, i really appreciate your help, and i think that now i will flash with CM 10, maybe i will return for more help if i needed, but now nothing can scared me like the first time that i try this

Development help required!!

Hi I was wondering. Could someone provide instructions on how to make build.prop tweaks to increase battery life and improve stability and smoothness??
I'm running the complete stock version of lt6 from sammobile and have rooted using the latest Philz kernel and removed all bloatware and useless crap using titanium.
Just interested in getting into a bit more developmental stuff since I've been trying out a lot of the custom roms and didn't like many of them.
Also is there a way for me to add mods to this stock rom like making it possible to swap apps in the static app drawer at the bottom of the home page and other cool mods???

Switch to AOSP - CM10.1 for better life and "real" development.
"Modding" is not "Developing"
I'm not that advanced!! Just getting into all of this. Could someone please help. I haven't deodexed or anything. Honestly I don't even know how to.
Would someone be able to post insteuctions on what I need to do to make adjustmwnts to the build.prop or init.d to make the stock rom better and also advise me on how to make the mods I mentioned in my earlier post.
Sorry if I've posted in the wrong section. I just thought I'd have more luck in this section since more developers and modders are likely to visit this section.

Just get the stock deodexed from pristine, to make you life easier... on pristine's rom, there are instructions there to tweak your phone. and if you like your games to be smoother, just flash helloworld kernel.
Just my point of view, hope this help....
As build.prop tweaks dont work on all phones or are outdated youd be better downloading a custom rom, extracting it and taking alook at the build.prop.
That will also give you a feel for how roms are arranged/filed.
Also you could download apktool and decompile a few apps and take alook at the layouts etc.
Getting stuck in is the best way imo.
Also you can search for this stuff on xda theres plenty of threads aimed at beginners guides to modding/tweaking

[POLL][LG-D415]Which kernel for CM11???

Now that I'm more familiar with this weird Android build system, I'm wanting/needing something answered by y'all...
I have several different kernels that I can build to use with my CM11 ROM...
1) Current kernel, Quarx original "AeroKernel"
2) LG Stock kernel ( from V10C sources )
3) Combination stock/CAF kernel
4) Quarx current kernel, "Krait" I believe.
I cannot guarantee that changing kernels will fix the remaining issues for my CM11 ROM and may in fact introduce more or different issues. I am willing to try however.
The question is... Which kernel would y'all like me to try?

IMO whichever one gives you the least issues during development. You've been the one working hard to get this stuff working and I'd feel bad if I told you to go one way and that would just bring up more problems.
But if all that doesn't matter I'd go with the other Quarx kernel we haven't tried yet because anything Quarx makes is good (and because it sounds cool), and just using the stock LG kernel is probably going to limit functionality, such as no overclocking.

I agree, Quarx "Krait" kernel.
It is fun to say. Tongue twistingly fun.
Thank you for the time and effort you have graciously given to the D415 community.
Guess I'll see about Quarx current kernel then. Currently writing an app for setting an action for our QuickButton.

hi, in my cm11 I can see in the display settings the option "double tap to wake" but as I expected it doesn't work, so I have a noob question: with a custom kernel it would be possible to make this function work??? even if I think that without this feature the battery life will be better.
If you use LG s kernel, would it improve the camera quality?
