Not sure if I rooted correctly or what version I'm now running

So, first hello and thanks ahead of time for answering a noobs' problem.
I wanted to search before posting but don't know really where to start.
I followed the Tutorial Ninja guide to rooting found here:

(so you can see which ROM, img, etc I used)
Everything went according to plan, except that the second command listed gave an error, that "-f no such file or folder could be found." But commands 1 & 3 worked, so I proceeded.
The problem I ran into was that when I upgraded the ROM at the very end, it would not boot up, it got stuck at the metallic "android" screen and was just stuck in a loop.
So, not having a microSD card reader, I just restored to factory settings. However this time, the beginning screen called my phone a Developer Phone, which it isn't. So it must not have restored everything to factory.
It appears the phone has a lot of the cupcake features, like auto-rotate screen, soft keyboard, but how could it be cupcake if I did a factory restore?

I'm used to looking for an RC#, like RC33, but since I used a diff ROM, I have no clue what I'm running and if I indeed have root access.
Anyway, the point of rooting the phone was to have tethering capability, so I downloaded the Tether App and when I attempt to tether it asks me if I want to "allow" access for root:root (I'm paraphrasing) so it seems it is rooted. Can someone help me figure this one out?
Also, since I'll have to manual updates, where should I go for them?

Doing a factory restore merely does a wipe of the data folder. You will still keep your ROM, SPL, radio, etc things that you've flashed. Those things stick with you. If its asking you for root, press always allow. You have root.
Firmware Version: 1.5 = cupcake. 1.1 = noncupcake. So you succeeded.
If you want to double check, go into terminal emulator (just download from market if you don't already have it)
When you open it, you should see:
$
from there, type su
$su
if you get:
# <- this means you have root permissions.
You can download custom ROMs from the developers forum. Just find one that you like and try it out, most of them only require you to wipe/flash the ROM from recovery (Home+Power). Cyanogen's are always a nice choice, or you can try Haykuro's or JesusFreke's (JF). But always check to make sure you have to the requirements to flash the ROM before doing so. They're usually located on the first post of the first page, so don't ask if you need this or that.

Hi, you do indeed have rooted cupcake my friend when you do a wipe, it's like a factory restore, it doesnt reflash the firmware the phone came with, it just re sets everything so the phone is "as new". This fixed the bootloop you had for some odd reason so your phone now boots up. It shows as an Android Dev Phone because you flashed the dev phone firmware.
That's it really, everything appears to be fine
I was beaten to it by the poster above because I was typing on my G1 Oh well, the 'su' in the terminal is a good point though.

Off the top of my head I'm not sure what version you're running, but yes - it is rooted. Does tethering work? If so, you're all set.
Well, mostly. Your radio is out of date. Use the link in my sig to snag the latest, apply it in recovery like the update.zip you did to flash your ROM.
What to do for updates is up to you.. There are many different ROMs out there, just need to pick which one works best for you. Personally, I suggest Cyanogen. But a new user shouldn't use the link in my sig.. Go over to the Development section of the forum and find the CyanogenMod 3.6.8.1 version - it's currently the stable version. If you want regular updates (new patches from Google, community developed features, etc) CM is the way to go.

AdrianK - thank you. i guess i got kinda lucky fixing it myself, mostly due to lack of options. hehehe
Saiboogu - I have yet to get the tethering working. I tried today at work with a Mac Pro via Bluetooth, was able to pair, but could not establish a connection. I'm going to try later with my Ubuntu laptop which is what I will be tethering to in most cases anyway. I heard Bluetooth is the best way to go, but not sure why. Definitely convenient if you forgot your cord.
I'll check the dev forum to see about upgrading to the latest ROM, but I'm nervous, as I don't want to screw up my phone again. I was out-of-commission for half a day with this trial. But updating ROM should be easier that gaining root right? You don't need any special commands, just reboot and flash?

I'm pretty sure the bluetooth stack doesn't have transferring enabled at this point. You can only connect to headsets and whatnot, you can't transfer data. Try Wireless Tether (app from Market) to do your tethering.

Don't be worried about flashing ROM's, the recovery console (power+home) is always available when you soft-brick, so you can always recover. My advice before you go any further is a) flash your radio if you haven't done so already, if you don't you may notice problems with calls, texts. data ect. b) grab cyanogen's recovery image and flash that. It will let you make an image of the phones memory (a nandroid backup) and then restore it if you soft-brick and are in a hurry to get your phone working again.

CONFUSED N1 Owner

Well I recently made the switch from iPhone OS to Android , picked up a used Nexus One in pretty good shape, no scratches, like new and what not, the phone is amazing BUT I am having a hard time understanding some stuff (I thought I was getting a stock N1, and it seems it has been loaded w/ custom ROM and is rooted and unlocked. -which not bad in my opinion, but...
I still have some questions, I am trying to update to Froyo 2.2, and im not sure if I will ever get OTA since the phone has been messed around with and if i manually update to 2.2 it will cause trouble.
1) When I boot the phone it shows the "lock" to be opened, so I am assuming it is oem unlocked, the phone has working WiFi tethering (just like in 2.2)
2) also in the menu of the phone there is an app "superuser permission" which thats why assume the phone is also rooted
And finally In the "About phone" I get the following:

I have reset the phone to factory settings, but the same info comes up everytime. the phone runs flawless, no lags, overall i love the phone.
And finally if anybody knows please feel free to share, I am trying to open port 80 on the N1 while it is running Wifi tethering and the only way i have found to do this is if the N1 is rooted, correct me if im wrong... i have a rovio that is refusing to connect to the N1s network...

Your not very confused!
Your phone is unlocked and has root. its running cyanogenmod-5.0.8-n1-test3.
You can install a custom froyo rom without too much of a problem from recovery. Remember to nandroid-backup everything from recovery first.
Get into recovery by holding down the volume down button as you press the power button to power on the phone.

you can install 2.2 with no problem but you have to manually do it. you might get a notification for ota's but you won't be able to install them. just install it manually.

Yeah man, you're money. For a used phone it is set up in possibly the best way possible for someone new to android and ready for you to throw the new CM6 ROM on there. You even have the proper radio already. You're good to go.

You can install Froyo in various ways. If you want total stock you can follow the instructions on this link and let OTA froyo install itself. If you need root you can download that from HERE
This method requires SDK installed with Fastboot on your computer with mandatory USB Drivers.
Or you can go the very easy way and use ROMs that is allready cooked, ready to flash in recovery right over your old ROM, like the link that is in my signature. It works great for me and is pretty much stock with root and a couple of extras you can delete via ADB if you don't need them..
Just download the Rom, drop it on the root of your SD Card and flash away in Recovery. all done!
What you are running is a test version of Cyanogen which is not the stable version. So it seems the previous owner didn't bother flashing it.

Problems rooting

Sorry another noob just joined the forum.
I have been researching periodically for about a month now and jumped in last week and attempted to root my phone. I believe that I rooted it after upgrading to 2.27.651.5. I could not successfully flash the recovery.img.
The program that pops up on the phone gave me an error message. Should I root the phone again from the beginning?
After this is successful all I have to do is load a ROM onto the phone and I will be set am I right? As of right now my rooted? phone is having problems connecting to the mobile network and I can only connect to the WiFi networks to get internet.
Sorry for being such a noob. I have tried searching and researching but the terms used are unintentionally geared towards people who know about this stuff unlike me.

If your phone was successfully rooted then yes all you would have to do is load a ROM and you'd be all set but it seems like your phone didn't get rooted. When you root a phone correctly it won't interfere with anything already on the phone, it will just add functionality. When I rooted my hero I had to drop from the .6 build to the .5 and after I rooted it my gps and such didn't work so it might have been the build I downloaded onto the phone or the rooting process I used was wrong. I would try to wait until a dev puts together a guide on how to root the .6 build(the latest Android 2.1 build) and then root it. I have some experience with rooting so ill keep looking for a .5 build that works properly after being rooted and if I find one ill let you know what to do and all that fun stuff. Unrooting my captivate to get AT&T 2.2?

I rooted my phone (I think) using I897UCJF6-final-OCD-REV0.exe (I think). Looking at the phone with SUPER MANAGER the ENABLE ROOT function is NOT checked off. Does that mean my phone is not rooted? Is there another way of telling if my phone is rooted? I read somewhere that you need an unrooted phone in order to get the AT&T froyo 2.2 which hopefully will be released any day now. If I need the phone unrooted to get the update is there an easy way to unroot it that will not wipe out my programs and data?

that exe you are referring to is stock 2.1... there is nothing rooted about it

Ummmmm did you or didn't you run that program while in download mode? If you are unsure about that then I suggest you stop trying to mod your phone for a while and do some reading.
As far as being unrooted, no one knows. But I can tell you I plain don't care about an official release from att. I will continue to use roms that are developed by folks around here. they are better than anything that att can put out.

Pirate, I have been a member here for a long time, & been doing a lot of reading since I got this phone. I have never seen so many people get bricked and that scares me. I tried to root the phone just in order to make backups....I am a backup freek and for good reason. My last phone was the DASH 3G (still have it). I got the HTC Windows phone but only kept it a couple of weeks before realizing how far it has to go. The Captivate is definitely a lot better than anything i have ever had and it does not seem necessary to flash it in order to get all the nice apps running. I will be happy with the AT&T update if it ever appears. I have spent the past few weeks customizing the Captivate and will post my homescreen and a list of apps I am using.

Do you have the SuperUser App in your APP drawer? If so you are rooted.

one click lag fix (I dont think that one worked)
So do I need to UNROOT in order to get the AT&T update to 2.2?

second of all, you ARE rooted
third of all, doesn't matter if you "unroot" (although you dont really seem to be a candidate for rooting anyway)...because once you're rooted or once you change the existing software (which you did with the program you listed in the first post between the "i thinks"), you negate the ability to recieve over-the-air updates from at&t
not that ANY of this matters, because the second those firmwares hit at&t phones it will be here and available to flash
not to mention we already have 2.2 available unrooted (the leaked version (might be different))
if you want me to send you the one-click ODIN file to flash stock 2.2 let me know

So it's a confirmed fact that rooted phones can't get the OTA updates?

nope only that some people have reports that they have not been able to update after they try and use atts update....

1. Does my home screen get reset?
2. Do I have to download all of my apps again?
3. If so, does the phone remember which apps I downloaded from Marketplace?
4. I assume that any backups i did would not apply to the new 2,2
4. Anything i should know as far as what is and is not included in the update?

Thanks for the response. I have titanium backup, as well as SUPER MANAGER which also does backups. Also have ROm MANAGER but I am sure that will not apply....As for my installed apps & widgets I have a list of everything installed. Looking forward to 2.2 and FLASH 10 WHITESOX!

The official Froyo update has been coming "any day now" since September.

Just personal preference to run Titanium Backup - I know it works and I can use the free version to do everything I want or need.
Yea - I had forecasted we would see the Froyo OTA update from ATT with Source before Christmas - It does appear we won't see this update until sometime in 2011 - like um never?
At this point your stuck with either the OTA JH7 Update 2.1 Eclair - or you can get the Leaked Froyo (not recommended stock) or your plethora of Custom ROM's in the Dev forum.
I swear I think the Captivate has more custom roms then a room full of bunnies. I look at the other Galaxy S line and I see a few - but not as many to choose from here. This is the one major plus of owning a Captivate I guess

which one to get?

[Q] Flashing a custom rom with phone already flashed to cricket

Good afternoon all,
I have an HTC One PN072. I've flashed the phone from Sprint to Cricket. They were very adamant about me not "resetting" the phone as it will remove the information, or flash they've added.
I've done several searches and can't seem to find a thread indicating 1) if this is possible and 2) a guide to doing so. The phone already is rooted and has TWRP on it as well.
If anyone knows of a thread I would love a link to a guide.

I have a Sprint One fully flashed to Verizon and I flash custom ROMs all the time without any problems. I have never lost any settings and I don't even have to re-activate my phone. I would think that as long as you dont use Bootloader to flash a complete RUU image you should be fine. Goin s-off if your not already might cause issues here as well. (If someone knows for sure please correct me) I would say just download a ROM and install it with TWRP. I have updated firmware as well with no issues as well, however the firmware I upgraded with did not contain a radio update, which I am hesitant to do since I imagine that will effect my flash. I did my flash myself but it seems like a headache re-doing it.

Not that I have ever experienced. That was true on my EVO LTE and has so far been true on my One. I have the newest TWRP and in the past two days I have flashed EclipticOne, Elegencia and Insert Coin. On my old Droids Clockwork recoveries reset worked fine as well. DONT do a factory reset from inside the ROM. I have not tried it on my One, but on my EVO and my Droid 1/2/3 phones that would undo parts of a flash and I would have to reactivate. If I were you I would just work within my current firmware and flash what was available.
It is possible for you to flash your phone back to Cricket for free but its requires a lot of setup and can be a real pain in the ass. Getting 3G on Verizon was particularly painful and I have many screen shots and pages of notes on the actual procedure. When I upgraded from my EVO to the One I managed to get it right the first time by following my notes but it was still a serious hassle.

i was thinking about getting my one flashed to verizon but how does it work?? say i get my phone flashed.. is it verizon pre paid?? does that come with unlimited data?? text & talk?? how much would my bill be a month? sorry for all the questions

I apologize, so just to be as clear as possible, if you follow all of the wipes that roms usually ask you to perform in TWRP then you should be fine? However, do not perform a factory reset in the rom itself once loaded?

Doing a wipe through TWRP's wipe feature is fine as long as you dont go into 'Advanced' and mess with settings. Do not do the factory reset within the ROM once the ROM is loaded. If, while installing a ROM, the installer wants to do a wipe, that is fine as well.
