Can we expect to see Adobe Flash on our G1s? - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Froyo just hit AOSP and im curious if were actually gonna get Adobe Flash with our unofficial 2.2 roms?

http://androidandme.com/2010/02/news/no-flash-10-1-for-1st-gen-android-phones/

Even with all our Dev's and stuff? Dang that shatters my dreams.

I don't understand the obsession.. Proprietary crap like Flash shouldn't be anywhere near an open, progressive platform like Android.
Boycott this nonsense and support open web standards.

Besides we already have skyfire. It lets you watch flash videos on the internet. Games suck on the internet with flash and the controls are little sketchy.

Define "unofficial".
Fortunately, no, there will be no flash.
And that is a VERY VERY GOOD THING.
With the newer phones, I doubt very much that google actually WANTS flash on android, but being open source, it is impossible to STOP. It would also LOOK BAD on them for blocking it.

The Devs on these forums have amazed me time and time again doing things that "weren't possible," but judging by that article the processor just can't handle it. Kinda like Flash on Apple stuff. haha Burn!

I really couldn't agree more, We've yet to see a decent implementation of it yet on.... any platform...?

Maybe it is possible. The question is - do you really want/need it on g1? This phone isn't beast anymore. I bet that heavy flash website (well, even lite flash sites ) would run incredibly slow and the g1 would run out of RAM in seconds.

Even the GN1 will run out of RAM very quickly with flashbloat.
Hell, even a desktop with 16GB RAM will run out of RAM easily with flashbloat.

Flash is completely overrated. There's absolutely no REASONABLE need for it on your phone.

Sometimes it takes a little PAIN to train the world out of stupid mistakes.
This is one of them.
The more people REJECT flash, the more web developers will start to realize that it ISN'T a viable product, and therefore they won't use it.

OH dear lord!
Another worthless threat!
God almighty.. these farmers are ****ing everywhere..
I bet it works just fine on the iPhone. Well, any application dealing with livestock, most likely. Those tend to be fairly popular with the Apple sheeple.
I don't play Farmville, but I dislike, in principle, when sites that are supposed to support flash still put up "not supported" messages on my Nexus One running Froyo.
I've set the UAgent to Desktop and it still gets me. How does Farmville know what I'm running? Any way to really persuade these kinds of sites that we're running on a desktop?
honestly. i dont play farmville. but i was curious and just tried it. Its a pity it works on flash lite. ****in shame on you nexus.

Um, does anyone bother to read the word BETA right next to Adobe Flash 10.1.
If something things don't work or they are choppy on a beta program, it's probably because it is a beta program.

QFMFT!!!!
Now that truly is the REAL problem.

Who said no flash 10.1 for the slide.

Been a lurker for a while now. This is worthy of my first post. I found a flash 10.1 apk and it works. Not incredibly fast for flash games but it does work. I cant post links but I think you can figure it out.
getandroidstuff.com/2010/06/adobe-flash-101-full-support-for.html
Now I did not make this and don't know who did so use at your own risk. I have only been playing with it for a day and haven't seen any ill effects yet. All I know is it works.
" Android 2.2 comes with the new feature for full flash support. Here how it's work google just integrated a plugin called com.google.android.feature.GOOGLE_PLUGIN. And Flash uses it to embed itself inside browser. So browser in android 2.1 mobile phones does not see plugin. Now if you are owner of Android 2.1 or 2.0 smartphone then download the Adobe Flash 10.1 apk application below and get full flash support for your Android 2.1 or 2.0 mobiles.
BUT!There's another thing inside - a permission called android.webkit.permission.PLUGIN. It is already used by Flash Lite on HTC devices. So this app will replace the lite version of flash and will work with full feature.
Or get it here:

No wonder it doesn't work for a froyo rom.
The real question is when can we get flash on cm6 rc1???
I installed flash 10.1 from 4shared and after I tried it, i couldnt stay in the browser for long without it closing right back out.
I uninstalled it and it was fine.

currently the working adobe flash 10.1 release is primarily working only on devices bearing the "snapdragon" ARM processors... so when we're trying to force install this onto our devices it is either crashing, or not even allowing the install.
The flash 10.1 currently doesn't even allow the 1ghz hummingbird... its all a matter of time before a "general" release is going to be available. (i'm assuming)
I believe i've seen it said before and i quote;
"Adobe and Google working together to bring Flash player to a mobile device needs to be considered a "sensitive" port, unwelcome criticism on whether or not it will be necessary or whether this will start a revolution for future devices to follow depends on the ability to have Flash functioning flawlessly on the Android platform"
This means that all those Apple boys & gals who say "flash is pointless" yada yada... can't say "SEE THATS WHY FLASH IS USELESS" (implying that it will not work)
just my 2 pennies worth.

I didn't bother reading that whole post, primarily because I saw that you said that Flash wasn't pointless, but you are slightly incorrect.
The Slide's processor = ARM6
Requirement for Flash 10.1 = ARM7
IQ drop associated with mobile Flash = 72

Notice I said "snapdragon" and not just ARM, also flash in mobile is more of preference rather than necessity... hence the reason it can, or cannot be downloaded even with devices that are able to install it.
(and yes I do understand another reason for 3rd party install is to push updates without the need for a full firmware update)
Myself I personally like the idea of flash operating on a mobile device due to having my work email, which is primarily flash driven being able to access it with my personal phone. Using stock sense 2.1, I was able to do so, with Froyo on slide I'm unable to do so. (so back to the PC for me now)
So, as far as an IQ drop with the association of flash... if you have a mobile piece of software effecting your physical abilities then you really have a true issue, that needs immediate medical attention.
I just want to have the damn option of being able to use it.

I'm pretty sure Flash lite only works for sense
I think the only reason I would ever need full Flash support would be for Robot Unicorn Attack and maybe some physicsgames.net.
I still agree with the number one reason for people to have flash is for them to watch porn. Do not argue about the statment i just said, you and i both know its true.
But with the new info about higher-end phones soon to have divx support in the flash well thats just amazing. Of course without great service your pretty much screwed but say we had great service as well as the opportunity to use this feature wouldn't you take advantage of this at work on break and watch some movies and what not? I sure would.

You pervs stop the porn thing, that's probably the reason we don't get full flash!
And flash games?? Are you kidding!!! Don't waste time on those crappy-ass games!
There are many other reasongs why would we want full flash,
Has anyone thought of the streaming tv viewing channels ability! Or streams of radio stations, which some work over flash player 10.1
One could watch Live TV!!!
Think of the real benefits of flash.
Well, stock flash on 2.1 works with many sites with medium/small flash videos, but not Live Streams...
One of the reasongs why I won't flash a Froyo rom, I want Sense and Flash!
Just my opinion

No camera or gps cababilities
In many ways it is like a big phone with the obvious thing left out, but if you want to read (books, email, or anything) it holds many advantages. I have had mine for a week and I love it!
As stated, yes for the jist of it, it is like an Android phone without cellular capability. But the screen is much larger, the display blows the phone away, the speed surprisingly seems faster, mainly because you aren't on a phone you are on a device you can stretch your hand out on. The density is much larger so more icon capability on the screen, not limited like on a phone. It just freaking is insane how much nicer it is. I had no idea I would love it as much as I do, haven't even looked at the EVO threads in awhile heh.
But Android 2.1 is the same on phones/NC right? I've only used my incredible, so im not sure. Like the same settings I set on my phone as far as display and the apps I use can be used on the NC?

Stock software is 2.1, most likely your Incredible is 2.2, the only noticeable difference between 2.1 and 2.2 is Flash support and 2.2 is a little faster normally when it is fully setup properly, but doubt you will notice that on the NC it is very fast for what it is. Other than that I highly doubt you will notice too much difference between them. There are apps that won't show up in the market cuz you aren't 2.2 but that doesn't mean you can't manually download and install them.
No GPS, no BT, no cellular capabilities. That's it. The screen is bigger and it reeks of win. I'll be honest, I laughed when the iPad came out because it just looked like an oversized iTouch and who in their right mind would want one of those. I was obviously dead wrong (happens frequently to me) and the NC is a better tablet IMO.
Actually the NC has BT chipset just not enabled, the devs are working on that. And making headway! So ideally we will have BT capability before long hopefully!

Personally, I think the NC & the Evo go hand in hand!!! BTW, I haven't looked at the Evo thread in a while either!!!
It acts almost completely like a cellphone minus the actual phone. So if youre comfortable with an android phone you will be comfortable here too. If youre not, the NC is a fairly good device to get used to it as there is a ton of support here and the bigger screen is pretty nice.
Just get used to not having a camera (no barcoding), no GPS (at least there's wifi location), BT (for now its unavailable), flashlight (big whoop), microphone (no secretly recording people or making voice commands), no Wireless data besides wifi (tether!).
But that's why everyone should have a ROOTED Android phone (preferably HTC) to accompany their ROOTED NC.
It just doesnt have flash support which makes video watching somewhat of a hassle
There is Flash support? I went to facebook and tried playing a video straight from there, it says i need flash. So i was actually able to click the link to Adobe and it opened and i selected to dnld the file. It isn't finding a program though to open the file so that's where i'm stuck.
Also, i was on other sites and clicked video links to youtube, the tube site won't play videos either, it gives the same link to Adobe where i have dnld'd the flash file. Is this the correct way on N.C. to get flash? If yes, how should i dnld flash. The extension was strange also. Aaaaaand of course i can't find where the file is. Can't get on wi-fi here at office to go grab Astro real fast to find it. I can reply later with that detail if need be.
thanks in advance if anyone has solution to getting Flash.

It'll be cool when B&N gives us a stock 2.2 ROM so that we can get froyo (and flash) and keep all the B&N features.
Also, when we get a full version of honeycomb when that is officially released, there is no stopping this little guy. The fact that this community has made this much progress in such a short time with so little to work with is truly amazing.

I'm bailing on Anroid - form the lynch mob here

*lol spelling mistake in title*
I'm bailing on Android after 2 years and two devices. I'll just go ahead and get the canned responses out of the way:
"K GTFO"

"nice first post, moron"
The carrier/OS fragmentation is tearing Android apart. While most of you look at the open source platform and see good things, I see a disaster. Phones are full of bloat, locked out of core functionality (Atrix, anyone?) and relying on manufacturers for updates is slowing the progress of Android.
As a Vibrant owner, I am accustomed to some flaws - chiefly a working, but slow GPS. But when my phone constantly fails to send text messages or fills my call log with calls I did not make, I start to wonder. That's just this device - how about the Nexus One's that were sending texts to random contacts? I just think Google might have bitten off more than they were ready for. I often feel like they tried to jam so much into the OS that they forgot to keep user interface in check.
Don't get me wrong, I see a TREMENDOUS potential for Android in the future. The sheer number of activations is staggering. The platform will easily be the dominate OS, no doubt. In two years, I'll revisit Android.
For the time being I'm going back to *gasp* a Blackberry *gasp*
I for one fully respect you point of view, And good luck in your further endeavors.
Im sorry Android isn't working out for you.. I personally love my Evo, and wouldnt trade it for any other phone (right now at least).
some people enjoy the open source functions, and utilize the capabilities to its fullest, while others just call it bloat-ware (which it is full of...in stock form), and being locked out of core functionality ( what more can a blackberry do, even in stock form????)
i'm not hating on your post, or your opinion, Blackberrys are fun devices (before coming into the world of Android I owned about 5 crackberries) and im sure if you dont use your android device to its fullest, then a blackberry will be perfect for you

I'm as nerdy as anyone here and can certainly hold my own when it comes to fully utilizing my phone.
But phone is the key word there. I need a phone I can throw in my pocket, answer a message quickly and be back to life. A quick glance at a Blackberry tells me all I need to know. A quick glance at my Vibrant tells me the screen is off. Poor choice in phone model? Maybe.
The only things I will miss about Android are my phones amazing 4" Display, Google Navigation and WiFi tethering. That, to me, says a lot.
Interesting thoughts
I myself like phones that I can customize into something that I need. What I mean by this is with Android I can make my home screen tell me all I need. I went out and tried different phones and found that android based phones seemed to have the most customization options out there. I like the others but for me and this is only me android seems to fit me for what I need to have on my home screen. I like to see many things too. Like calendar, email, weather, SMS and a couple of other quick links to seldom used items. Other phones like Blackberry or Iphone work nice but I am often stuck by what they feel is right. I myself just like to have things my way I guess.

Yep. Had a MyTouch when they came out. The core functionality of the phone was pretty good, albeit a bit slow. I commend HTC/T-Mobile for updating such an old phone to Froyo.
What it boils down to for me is that despite Android being a much larger, more supported platform, it just isn't intuitive. Having to install a different rom every week to see if I can squeeze out a FULL day of use or get my GPS working just isn't fun anymore.
To me, Android has become exactly what a lot of people complained about the iPhone - a toy. The novelty (at least for me) has worn off and I'm back at square one wondering why I feel the need to own such a device. Aside from browse the web and play games, what can Android do that a Blackberry can't? I don't need to play Angry Birds or watch Youtube in HD - I have other devices to handle that. What I want to do is bang out messages and answer phone calls efficiently.
This was never intended as a thread to bash Android or XDA/Developers. I've noticed an enormous difference between stock 2.2 and some of the ROMs out there for the Vibrant. It was simply my observations on some (IMHO) big shortcomings in the platform that haven't been fully addressed.
Well, good luck on your endeavours, even though I think that HTC can solve your problems... maybe you could give the newer HTCs a shot, but hey, who am I to force you?
I think that you can still get your messages and calls out on android efficiently or at least I've managed to but it didn't take too much on my behalf; in the whole time that I've had my phone, I've only flashed 2 ROMs and my phone can pull about 48-51 hrs per charge with moderate use.

I'd do the same as you, only I can't live without widgets and homescreens anymore. I've tried WP7 but just couldn't use it because the lack of customization. GL with your future phones. Atleast you're not going to the darkest side (Apple).

iPhones are just popular because they are easy to use and are updated often and quickly. It's a painless process to upload your music, movies and photos. iOS has a huge app library with very nice quality apps. The phones look great and perform well. Using one iPhone means you pretty much know how to use any iPhone. This is unlike Android where music management is a nightmare. The Play store is flooded with low quality apps and poor support. Using one Android phone means you know nothing about all the other Android phones. In short, to the non tech geek iPhones are the go-to. They are popular because they are easy to use. It also helps that Apples products are usually a status symbol.
The downside to not having Android is your limited in customization of ROMs or kernels. That doesn't mean you can't customize iOS. You just can't go as far as you can with Android.
Android Phones gives you more freedom.
Apple iPhones gives you less headaches.

Could not have said that better IPhone is perfect when you just want the phone that works without much hassle. Android is perfect when you love tweaking and playing with your phone and not actually use it that much Because with a android you are never satisfied, there is always something more to tweak, change rom and other stuff so for me it always ends with just messing with it. To much time tweaking and flashing to find the perfect setup
Although the tweaking and flashing is a massive plus with Android for me, an even bigger plus is the ability to download files like mp3s and pdfs etc from the net or a torrent and play them straight away. With IOS you can't. Android is much more like a true mini pc compared to IOS. That's why I could never go back to IOS.

Oh yeah, the mp3 download is a big factor for me. My friends ask me where I buy music. I said it's free and I use my phone, and showed a friend once... he just kept quiet. If you reverse the situation, I'm sure they'd be bragging.

Ive a app called xender which sends all the mp3 & videos from android to iphone without any hassle otherwise I would have said bye bye iphone.I think iphone should reduce some restrictions, would gather more android users.

Me, NOT at the moment. I am so used to android, just like my PC vs Mac, and my Canon DSLR vs Nikon...
But time will tell, now that Samsung started rolling phones that have irreplaceable battery and no SD card support...

Given the way the OP phrased his post - I think we were both accurate But yes you are right. There are plenty of people accessing content they haven't paid for on iOS too.
as an ex-iphone user (went from S1 to iphone 4 then iphone 5, back to S3 and every samsung since then) i have a similar view on them.
iPhones are simple to understand - not simple to use. there is always one way to do something, and thats it.
For many people thats preferable to feeling like an idiot when there is 10 ways to do something. go to android and watch a movie "oh it didnt work" - you tell them to try BS player or MX player and they just throw their hands in the air, because the built in video player is holy and sacred.
The reason for the simplicity is simple: On apple, every last thing is designed to come from itunes, and be played by the apple stock apps. there is one source to get the content, one app to play them, and the only thing that seperates the users is how much money you have to throw at the apple ecosystem - once someone has spent a few hundred bucks on iTunes content they'll never leave, because they add that value to offset the cost of a new phone. $900 iphone? pfft,i have $2K in iTunes, it might as well be free!"
on android, you can buy them from a dozen sources, pirate them, copy them from your PC - and you have infinite playback options. its simply too complex for people who bought the phone without knowing *WHY* they bought that phone, since they dont use most of its capabilities anyway. These are the common iSheep, the people who bought it because it's cool and looks fancy, but use it like a nokia.
Everyone i've converted from apple to samsung has followed the same path as well "why? this does the same things as my iphone, but the iphone is prettier and has itunes" - they do a direct comparison without even considering what the phone can do BEYOND the iphones capabilities. Showing them the S-pen, or directly playing files off my NAS/PC over wifi, or MHL/HDMI, or the note 4's super fast charging blows them away.
the iphone is the baseline, and they're so used to having just ONE choice that when presented with two or three or 10, they simply treat all the options as the same.
"i hate android" means "i used one android phone once, and they're all the same right?" - this also goes for themes, keyboards, stock apps and so on.

Pretty much. I was really over whelmed when I came back to Android. I was used to things just working out of the box. Now I have to rebuild my music collection from Google Play as that is eaiser then attempting to transfer from iTunes. Took a few days before I got the hang of flashing and building from source. Things have changed as if you keep in mind my iPhone is now just a really expensive GameBoy Advance and remote. My Note 4 is my daily driver.
So, on iPhone there is no proper PGP support, no NFC APIs (so no support for secure tokens such as Yubikey, or even NFC tags), no low level network APIs (so you can't implement your own protocol, such as OpenVPN).... (I could go on and on)
It seems like a no-go to me, it is pretty much locked down as well, even though you actually purchased the device you can't do anything on it that's not endorsed by Apple, that's why I strayed away from the iPhone in the first place (I used to own an iPhone 3GS, that's until I swiched to android and never came back).
As someone that works in IT, and need to handle sensitive data, iOS is just not the system for me.

But that's the thing of course. If you work in IT, you most probably want an android. However if you don't know sh*t about IT, which 98% of the people don't, an iphone really might be the better option. You dont have to worry about battery drains, wakelocks, background apps running, viruses, etc. It just does what it's supposed to do when a monkey operates it.
But if you're in IT, you most likely want to do some more stuff, go more in depth and then Android is clearly the OS of choice.
I like iphone coz everybody knows when u have an iphone. But you have to tell that you have a Note 4 coz there are hell lot of samsung mobile with similar looks. Also there is atleast 1 year surity that apple will not release another phone with similar looks. Also with some restrictions removed like access to files or install from external source could make apple on top.But guess this is how ios will be.Although I can now play movies & songs from external source by an app called xender atleast making it usable

For me is simple, if I use iPhone I will become dump, if I use android I will be generous because android is for geek not for dump. Yes lol most of the people use apple iPhone but they are totally useless in technology. There are a lot of iPhone user who even don't know simple problems in smart phone world. My company have a lot of previous ios user try to use android and return back to iPhone because very simple problem in android (simple problem for android user) is bothering them, that android user can solve the problem in just few second. I have a lot of friends using iPhone and always come to me with some simple problem I just laugh and says only one word..... useless guys. They always says iPhone is very smart.. ha ha.. i always says ..yes you are dump and go study first.
I am not insulting them, I just want them to not blind and open eye, Technology is changing, iPhone is good but not perfect, android is good but not for normal user same as window phone.

I do not intend to be rude, but in english the word dump means something different to the way you are using it. Perhaps you meant the word dumb?
