Admins please put this where it needs to go. Searched for over a month to no avail. any chance to get a carrier sub category in devices? Everything cdma seems to be sprint specific (or atleast not alltel specific) and takes a ridiculous amount of time to find info. Used touch pro for 2 years and could simply use hardspl and flash.. Not so simple with android. Anyone help please
Everything in this fora is Sprint-specific because... most of our Heroes are Sprint. Anything that's marked Non-Sprint CDMA hero is you.
yeah I know that but that doesn't mean the root method will work for my hero, alltel hero's are stock 2.2, and I've found no way to root alltel specific.

PCD, the primary HTC distributor for most ACG (Associated Carrier Group) members, released 2.1 for their Hero devices not too long ago.

Anyone willing to take a shot at it? It looks like the only Specific builds are for Bluegrass, Appalachian, and Cellcom. Open Mobile and Northwest Missouri use ACG 2.41.556.1, the rest are ACG 2.36.556.1. Since my device came with 2.36.556.1, I didn't have the advantage of rooting it with 1.5. Someone told me to try unrEVOked, but mine isn't Sprint.
short answer is your boned. Try looking on craigslist or ebay for a hero thats on 1.5. Since the VAST majority of cdma hero owners are sprint i wouldn't hold my breath for someone to crack the ACG version.
I might be able to talk tech into giving me a unit still on 1.5 as a 'replacement' (that is if the tech crew isn't getting paid to sit on their asses and RUU all day), but I don't think I'll invest in a phone until I see something that fits my definition of badass. Thanks for the help!
I think that your best bet is a variation of the ADB recovery hack
http://www.unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php?id=public:adb_in_recovery
or something that stems from s0be's attemps at rooting the alltel hero:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=710483&highlight=alltel+hero
http://pat.erley.org/Phone/AlltelHero
It would be amazing if someone could get this to work. I tried every method I could find on both this 2.1 version and the original 1.6 that came on my phone with no luck. I'd be willing to help, but to be honest I don't know how much help I would be...haha..

My carrier is a PCD partner and I have the ACG build 2.36.556.1. My Hero came with 1.5 and I ran the RUU to 2.1 when it was released. I then searched probably every forum known to man, and finally found a successful root method here on XDA. Here is the link:

OH MY GOD YOU ARE THE HERO...TO MY HERO!!! It worked perfectly! Finally after months of searching/trying every possible rooting method.... Thank you!

I'm takin' this s**t to Staples! That was almost TOO easy.. I'm currently on the Fresh ROM. Thanks!!
Ok so my girlfriend has a Blackberry and she hates it. She's up for a new upgrade, BUT she's on Alltel. They only have the hero and her friends have all had bad experiences with it. I'd like to get her a Droid and put it on Alltel. She can't leave Alltel because she's got a good deal with a family plan. I've done some quick researching to no avail, but was wondering if maybe some of you could help. Anything you can link me to or tell me about would be helpful and I'd appreciate it. Thanks.
There is, but you will need someone who has had lots of expesince with the hardware and esn's of phones.

Does anyone know how to root a nTelos HTC Hero 2.1? I have read some of these guides but none say anything about nTelos. Its all Sprint stuff.
I'm just asking because I want to be 100% sure I do the right stuff, can't afford to buy a new phone.
Thanks

ngholson's guide to non sprint cdma hero rooting

Not sure which forum I should have used, sorry.
I'm still a little confused because it just says Non-Sprint, does that mean that it will work for my nTelos Hero?
I haven't seen anyone in that post that said anything about nTelos.
Just Cellular South.
Try z4 Root from the Android Market or XDA. It's been able to root pretty much anything I've tried it on (LG Optimus S AND HTC Hero with the newest RUU).

go post this in the Q & A's
I have a CDMA HTC Hero from ntelos and recently upgrated to the HTC Desire also with ntelos. So, now my Hero is just sitting around.
I wanted to give the Hero to my wife, but ntelos won't let me do this unless I sign up for another data plan. As it stands right now, I have a data plan for my Desire and my wife has no data plan for her standard cell phone.
Is there any way that I can switch phones from her standard cell phone to the Hero myself? Is this possible at all? Could someone point me in the right direction?
Thanks. I'm a totally new-b at this type of stuff.
Probably not legally. If the carrier requires a smartphone on their network to have a data plan, then you will have to get one if you want to use it.

It's absolutely possible. There is a thread within our Hero realm that has it around here. Search for it, it's here. I remember reading it a while back when that same question was asked.
Happy hunting! (and I would link it, but I'm about to head to formation).
Thanks for the replies. I've tried doing some searches, but I'm not sure what to search for exactly. I'm having trouble making sense of all the terminology (esn, prl, etc.) Any idea of what to search for exactly?
Thanks again.
I know I might be beating a dead horse but the Bionic is the first phone that I didn't immediately look to replace the second I got it. So if anyone knows a way or if its even possible to get a Bionic on Virgin mobile that would be awesome.
From some of the other things I've read on this forum, you could probably get it going if you used something like CDMA Workshop to push a Virgin Mobile PRL file into the Bionic.
There are a lot of other people in this forum who are more knowledgeable than I am about this though. Hopefully they can step in and helpl
Ok got nothing so far if anyone has anything Please give me a shout.

Also looking for Droid Bionic activation on Virgin Mobile
I've been searching for a few days now, and have yet to come up with any methods to actually do this. Has any progress been made that you've found?
Any way known yet to get Virgin Mobile or Boost Mobile on the Bionic? I know this is an old thread, but I thought it would be better to piggyback here than to start a new thread since I`m basically asking the same question.
I`ll appreciate any information that you share.
