I have a CDMA HTC Hero from ntelos and recently upgrated to the HTC Desire also with ntelos. So, now my Hero is just sitting around.
I wanted to give the Hero to my wife, but ntelos won't let me do this unless I sign up for another data plan. As it stands right now, I have a data plan for my Desire and my wife has no data plan for her standard cell phone.
Is there any way that I can switch phones from her standard cell phone to the Hero myself? Is this possible at all? Could someone point me in the right direction?
Thanks. I'm a totally new-b at this type of stuff.
Probably not legally. If the carrier requires a smartphone on their network to have a data plan, then you will have to get one if you want to use it.

It's absolutely possible. There is a thread within our Hero realm that has it around here. Search for it, it's here. I remember reading it a while back when that same question was asked.
Happy hunting! (and I would link it, but I'm about to head to formation).
Thanks for the replies. I've tried doing some searches, but I'm not sure what to search for exactly. I'm having trouble making sense of all the terminology (esn, prl, etc.) Any idea of what to search for exactly?
Thanks again.

I am going to give my sister my Hero when I get my EVO and I was asking her if she wanted me to keep it rooted and keep the roms up to date and she said yes. When I give her my hero and she takes it to sprint to have them port her # over to it will they have to ruu it to do that or will they just leave the phone alone and punch a few things in on their kiosk things to change the #. Thanks for the help!
Crap. I was perusing the general thread and still though I was over there. Mods please move this to general. Thanks and sorry for my stupidity.

Just demand that they keep it at 1.5; they won't have to RUU, they'll just have to essentially "reactivate" it.
No it doesn't matter if it's rooted at all.
I'm mailing it to her and she isnt the most tech savvy person so she wouldnt know at first if they RUUed it or not because I'm running a 2.1 rom. Im just wondering what they would do if you brought it in and didnt say anything and wanted them to activate it on your number.

I would but I dont really know what I'm doing with phone activation stuff. Only time I've dealt with activating phones is when they are brand spankin' new so I dont really know how activating an old phone or someone elses phone on your number is. Sorry for my lack of knowledge and general noobness on this subject.
Or activate it from sprints website..
Activating by phone is incredibly easy.
If you've switched your EVO to your line already, it's really going to be a matter of her calling and asking to have a swap performed. They'll ask for the imei/esn, possibly have her use an unlock code to reprogram it (although last time I didn't even have that) and then reboot.
Takes about 3 minutes and the service person will tell her what to do step by step.
Just make sure to specify that this is a SWAP and not an upgrade.
Ok sweet. I figured it would be decently easy. Thanks for all the help guys
cant you activate the phone online using the esn if so that would be the easiest way to activate it for her

so how did it work for you?
Admins please put this where it needs to go. Searched for over a month to no avail. any chance to get a carrier sub category in devices? Everything cdma seems to be sprint specific (or atleast not alltel specific) and takes a ridiculous amount of time to find info. Used touch pro for 2 years and could simply use hardspl and flash.. Not so simple with android. Anyone help please
Everything in this fora is Sprint-specific because... most of our Heroes are Sprint. Anything that's marked Non-Sprint CDMA hero is you.
yeah I know that but that doesn't mean the root method will work for my hero, alltel hero's are stock 2.2, and I've found no way to root alltel specific.

Does anyone know how to root a nTelos HTC Hero 2.1? I have read some of these guides but none say anything about nTelos. Its all Sprint stuff.
I'm just asking because I want to be 100% sure I do the right stuff, can't afford to buy a new phone.
Thanks

ngholson's guide to non sprint cdma hero rooting

Not sure which forum I should have used, sorry.
I'm still a little confused because it just says Non-Sprint, does that mean that it will work for my nTelos Hero?
I haven't seen anyone in that post that said anything about nTelos.
Just Cellular South.
Try z4 Root from the Android Market or XDA. It's been able to root pretty much anything I've tried it on (LG Optimus S AND HTC Hero with the newest RUU).

go post this in the Q & A's
Can anyone help me achieve this? thanks
Your Better off getting her a new phone. As far as getting it activated you should google and read aa lot. This is the hero forums mainly for Sprint. I mean someone might respond but I don't think you will receive much help. Besides google and reading will more than likely get the results you want. Well good luck man hope you get it setup.

I was wondering why I saw metro everywhere lol.
II've unlocked my phone already, root access. the whole 9. Phone only reads T-mobile sim card. Not my metropcs sim card. No GSM service. only CDMA. I've ran down so many forms. Every time I think i find something. Its just a troll that says he has it working but explains nothing. Shows nothing so the thread ust die. Can someone that has a working sprint HTC ONE on metropcs"call, text, internet, picture messaging,3g or 4g". Simply post what they did or even make a back up of your phone and post it so the rest of us can have the same privilege. Please do not send me a link to some thread that I've already been to. That gets rather annoying. hell if you can do it for me. I'll pay you. im on 4.3 bad boy sprint one sense 5.5 v1.3 PRI 4.38_003 PRL 01005.

Without trying to sound like a jag, you said you've done everything, but not once do you mention FLASHING TO METROPCS. You can unlock and setup the GSM stuff all day long and get no love. It has to be flashed to the carrier before it will work for it. There are quite a few places that offer that service, with guarantees, since you brought up paying. Makes sense to check them out. I saw a few while researching this, but you want no links so I'll let you do your own homework. BTW, I understand your frustration; the problem is, this phone CAN be made to work in the way you are looking for, but it isn't really designed to work that way, no matter what certain people or threads say. So, be aware that you are likely to be disappointed with the outcome anyway. From what I've read, expecting anything more than 3G and crappy data on GSM in the US is expecting too much. My penny and a half. Good luck!
