I would like to know one thing.... What devs are moving on to the evo? I can't, mostly due to the fact that I'm a broke-ass son of a *****, and I'm afraid we won't have any good devs left. So.. If you're a dev, are you moving on to the EVO?
So far ive seen more than 6 devs leaving the hero. I guess i should start learning to make roms and themes pretty soon. Funny thing is as ive stated before, the EVO is not the android savior phone and it will have issues at launch. Hell they don't even know if they can root the the thing yet, look at all the trouble our devs are having even cracking the 2.1 release.

I even saw a few EVO's pop up on craigslist for over $700. Talk about trying to rip people off.

There's a reason why people are considering it a "savior" type phone... for Sprint especially. Sprint doesn't have any "powerful" or full spec'ed phones like the Nexus one (T-Mobile, GSM carriers), or the Droid (Version). The Moment and Hero are the only two Android phones Sprint has, but they're not fully comparable to the Nexus one or Droid. Adding the Evo to its line up finally gets Sprint in the "Big boy club", now we'll officially have one of the most powerful/full featured/sought after phones in market.
This phone is a savior, not only for Sprint; but for Android all together. Look at all the hype it's getting and for good reason. ****, I don't care what Android phone gets the hype, as long as it takes it away from the ****ting/proprietary Apple products.
P.s. I bet you the Evo is rooted before it's official release; Modaco has rooted a couple of phones already this way. I wouldn't be surprised, especially with a phone like the Evo.

The EVO will be rooted, and it will be rooted before June is over. Stop posting it can't be rooted, that's false.
2.1 release isn't being handled like the original Hero release was or how the EVO release will be handled. We already have root status and 2.1 roms, so quite naturally the work on rooting the officially 2.1 is going slow. If somehow we were all magically updated to official 2.1, there would be a lot more progress on the root status of official 2.1 instead of trying to tinker with the 2.2 froyo port.
As for it not being a savior phone? It's the pure specs of the phone that are attracting most of us. 1ghz cpu, 1gb rom, 512mb RAM, not too mention many of it's features... so I fail to see how this is not a better Android/SenseUI capable phone?
Just wanted to point something out... if you click on the numbers in the poll it will tell you who voted and for yes or no.

Sad part is... Somebody go buy it!! And I'm going to be so jealous because that is an EASY $700 bucks..
I can see him being on a carrier other than Sprint... so he can't use the Evo as a phone.
I was going to pay full price to get the Evo since my upgrade isn't til October but I changed my mind and just going to wait. Good chance another phone will be out around that time that's just as good as the Evo if not better.

I think if sprint were smart (which appears to not be the case most of the time) then they would have launched the Nexus One AND the EVO. But I guess only having one will force them to give half way decent support to someone instead of crap support to everyone.
Hi all I am a lonnnnng time owner of a G!...I was looking to get a new android device, preferable the HD2. is that any good for roms/mods/anything along like that? The G1 is lacking devs b/c they all moved on to better devices....Plz I need some opinions on which android would be the best bet to get..and im not looking to get the nexus one (not enough money).

the hd2 is a windows mobile phone, nobody has ported android to it yet
if you insist on torturing yourself with that, watch the action here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=651632
nexus one or mytouch, or mytouch slide if youre staying on tmobile
evo if you switch to sprint
droid incredible or droid if your moving to verizon
in my humble opinion
by the way, the devs have not moved on to other devices, froyo will be available on the G1 in the next few weeks from cyanogen
and if you're up for an upgrade with Tmobile, you can get the nexus1 for like 189 if you order it online from google

Do some research its all about preferences.
Desire or Nexus One at the moment
Hi Am switching to Sprint and want an android. I'm 55 years old and love to text. Is this a good choice to intro me to android world.(never had touch screen but I'm a fast learner) Text, internet and talk are the order of importance that I will use the phone for. I think the Evo would be too much to start with. Whats your expert opinion. Had a Nokia 6301 for last 2 years. Thanks in advance.

I was a Motorola RAZR user before switching to the Hero, so in terms of phone usage, technology platform, and priority of functions the phone provides, it was a big difference. The touch screen is not difficult to get the hang of, the only thing is that may take some getting used to is the touchscreen keyboard (definitely some learning curve there, compared to a tangible one). Other than that, you shouldn't have a problem.
In truth, the EVO and the Hero will provide essentially the same functionality; EVO has 4G connection, the Hero doesn't, but in terms of OS configuration and general usage, they are very similar. They both run (stock, of course) on HTC Sense, HTC's shell over android that replaces a lot of the stock android programs with shiny and beautified new ones. The big difference between the two is the hardware. The reason the Hero has such a huge community of support on these forums is that it has very limited hardware, and most found that stock it ran very slowly. Hence, the need to mod and improve it, and if I may say so myself, they've done it quite well. The EVO actually has the hardware to properly run HTC Sense, but there is a large community for the EVO as well, and growing.
Either one will have essentially the same learning curve in terms of functionality. The Hero has one of the largest communities of support on these forums, so asking a question as you did will usually get a response (and one that is far more useful than any Sprint Rep could give you). The EVO has a good-size community as well, and has 2x the processing power, memory, and extra goodies like a front-facing camera for video chat and stuff. The Hero is $149.99 with a new contract, the EVO is $199.99 with a new contract (if they have it in stock; there has been a MASSIVE shortage).
This is just the background information; I recommend going to a Sprint store and playing with them yourself. A lot of people don't like the EVO because it is HUGE size-wise. A lot of people scoff at the Hero because to get it to run well, either serious work or rooting is pretty much mandatory. Either way, I say its a good choice. If you have any more questions, let me know, but good luck in your search!
If you go to the hero pm me with any questions u might have if I can help ill b glad to and I'm on here a lot warning its very addictive lol and IMO I'd go the hero first time around good luck

No expert on these things, but as one newbie 55 yo to another the Hero is a good phone to start out with. The Evo is too if you can get used to something that large coming from a smaller phone. Both have a ton of stuff on them to start out with..but as far as which one to get..you got 30 days from signing up with them to really decide which you prefer. You have more screen size with the Evo and a lot faster processor to start. Like what has been said..go try them both out and see which you prefer..I never thought I would get the hang of a touch screen keyboard and now I wouldn't go back to one..they just add way too much bulk to a phone for my taste and I can type and correct just as fast as using a real keyboard now.
Mac
thanks
Thanks for the insights. I'm going to get the Hero. (contract is up Sept 16th with Tmobile) I will be back in the next couple weeks to let you know how its going. I'm really interested in the process of making the Hero go faster. Its something I will probably persue after I have it for a while. Again, thanks for the replies.

Ah, Grasshopper, you have chosen wisely!
I'm a couple years your senior, have had a Hero for about a year, have rooted and flashed my phone to the point where I'm very happy with it. Have also become something of a root-meister for the rest of the family
These phones are like computers: you always want them faster. Having said that, I use my phone mostly for (gasp) phone calls, texting, MMS, and casual browsing and Youtube viewing. The Hero - especially when modded, is quite up to the task.
My only complaint is the tiny tiny text within many of the apps. Obviously, the developers are all 20-somethings with the kind of eyesight I used to have when I was that age <GRIN>.
The EVO has a larger screen, but not having played with one, I don't know if that translates to larger type, or just more tiny type that can fit on a larger screen?
As someone else said, the Hero has a huge support base in the community, so you'll find lots of help as you learn and navigate your way around it. If you get a Hero, you'll be happy with for at least a year or two as you develop further insight as to what you want in one of these phones.
Before discovering how to root and mod my phone with some of the excellent ROMs available (I'm now using Cyanogenmod 6) I was ready to go back to my Katana. The stock ROM is cludgy and frustrating. With CM6, my Hero is now snappy and responsive and I can see living with it for another year...until the next upgrad.
Good luck!

coming from t mobile you can get the hero for 1 cent on amazon, just got two for my parents in their 60s and they love them.
Personally i think you should gget an evo...its practically an upgraded hero. The only reason why you should pick up a hero over an evo is if screen size is a problem. And cost.
Dont get me wrong, i love my hero. Ive had it since day one, but if i had known about the Evo before hand, then i wouldve opted for that. Especially since it works great out of the box (after a few updates, but the hero was that way too ). Its almost a neccessity to root the hero mostly because the processor is slow. But after you get it running at ~700mhz its great
But personally im going for the epic 4g on october 1st. Its like an Evo with a keyboard! Plus, it may be thicker than the Evo, but its just as thick as my hero, so thickness is a non-issue for me

I qualify for an upgrade next week. I'm stoked. Android has gotten better release after release--the hardware has become rate limiting, I'm ready for a new phone.
What do I get next?
My impressions are that the Samsung Epic is technically a better phone than the Evo 4G but that because it so new that there's much less software development for it at the moment. I enjoy CM6 and have been flashing the nightlies every few days. With Epic, I'd be stuck with 2.1. Will the Epic catch up in development?

I used both the Evo and the Epic and the Evo is a superior phone. Heres why, the community for the evo is way bigger and it has the best devs... guys like Cyanogen, Sterickson and other are evo users and activaley particapate in the forums there. The phone is fast and performs better on every test I've done on both. There is way more development for the Evo. Its 50$ cheaper. Froyo Sense, and a ton of custom mods, all the great devs and theme from here are now in the Evo forums.
I almost got the Epic I like Samsung phones but I was more partial to the verizon epic as I don;t need to physical qwerty. Best way to see what you want is go down to best buy and use them download some apps play around thats what I did and ended up with the Evo, only thing I miss is the track ball but got use to not having it very quickly.
If you liked the Hero then you'll love the Evo.
When im able to upgrade, 12/12/10, im going to get an epic 4G! I did a lot of resarch on it and it seems like a great phone.

I'll go to Best Buy to check them out. Thanks for confirming what I am thinking. I will likely get the Evo. Both seem to be great phones. If I were less addicted to the pace of development, I could be happy with the Epic. They are still waiting for Froyo...
If you have small hands, get the Epic because it's smaller than the Evo.
They are both 4G, but a plus on the Epic is that it has a physical keyboard, so you might want to try that out.
It's your descison, so you should make sure you get the one you want

Are you abandoning the Hero? within a month ill bet we have a working Froyo running on it, with Sense!
I'd at least wait until the Christmas phones come out and see if anything with that sweet 1.5ghz processor is coming out yet. I felt like an idiot when I upgraded to a Hero 3 months before the EVO came out...if I had just been a little more patient I'd have a much better phone. Then again, that would also have meant 3 more months of broken sliders and ****ty Samsung construction, so I guess it's a fair trade. With Sprint Premium you get up grades every 12 months so it doesn't really matter anymore...just pay your bill on time
Also, see the HTC Knight on XDA's main page. Looks like it's coming out for Sprint and should be an awesome deal. When buying technology that moves this fast it's always better to do some research and wait for a release rather than just buy the best thing out there for "right now."
Im waiting till next christmas in 2011 and see whts out then.
I'm actually due for an upgrade tomorrow but I will be waiting for the HTC Knight / Speedy which has a release date in the beginning of January. I do not want a 4G phone as I am in the middle of nowhere and will be prolly be the last to get 4G coverage. That's as long as I can wait unless I hear something about nvidia's tegra2 chip then I guess ill have to wait for that.

Alright so I'm with Cellular South and I have an update creeping around the corner. I've done as much research as I can to possibly locate some rumors that my carrier will possibly be pushing out something epic in the near future to no avail. lol So my decision is between the Samsung Galaxy Showcase (which is the Mesmerize/fascinate) and the HTC Desire..Both will soon be outdated easily but i'm still looking for input because i'm really on the fence on this one So lets band together and see what this thread brings because I doubt I am the only one out there who has faced/will face this decision lol
Desire. Just because Sammy is a douche with updates.

There is really no reason to stray from HTC, unless you do not care about the development scene at all (then again, if so, why would you be on XDA).
i would totally stick with htc, having played with numerous phones htc's hardware always seems superior to everyone elses.. i have had 4 htc phones and all of them beat out the other brands in the same categories.. and also likewise with the development, i have never been able to get much help with samsung stuff like htc..
Haha good point. Lol I was just curious about opinions from people who may have played with both phones and picked a victor lol but it seems pretty much unanimous! I love my current HTC phone and it hasn't given me any reason to jump ship yet especially with this community to keep me up to date
