All-
Attached is a version of the new DroidX Multitouch keyboard that I have themed for my new release of xtrROM. I am not a fan of white or red and I like the raised key look screen shots below.
7/13/2010 - Updated new file that has a fix for the missing "<" key under ALT. Also fixed the long press on the "(" key. Please let me know if it works
A few notes:
includes fix for the dark keypad number for when you are in a number only field such as blue tooth.
vibrate on keypress has been fixed for Eris (not sure how it will feel on other platforms)
fixed the display of the "&" from "&;amp;" in alt mode
if you long press the "?123" key it brings up keyboard settings
voice to text support works well
[Edit per thenestor]
If you're using a ROM that already has a stock Android keyboard, you have to rename this "LatinIME.apk" and push it to /system/app, overwriting the vanilla keyboard (it uses the same package name: com.android.inputmethod.latinime). If you're using a Sense-based ROM, you can install it like any old APK.
This "should" work across phone platforms and on nonrooted phones however I have not tested.
This is my first themed app so let me know if it works and enjoy!
CREDITS to thenestor for helping me find the keyboard and which libs to use and unknown for the initial pull from the DroidX

I am using zach.xtr's ROM and I tried pushing this (without renaming) and I cannot seem to get it to take. I didn't rename because I don't think zach.xtr's ROM uses the standard keyboard. Can you point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance.

Updated .apk with dark keypad fix
I have updated the .apk on the OP with one that has a fix for the dark keypad number for when you are in a number only field such as blue tooth...
New version doesn't install.

So far this is pretty cool, i like the new look and the predictive texting seems to work better than vanilla.

Sounds like you are trying yo install via an app manager, you probably need to push like the OP states ..... I had to because the ROM I am using had the Vanilla Keyboard already installed
Im using sense and im not rooted. I installed the original white one using adb push and the original black one from this post but this new version fails

Sounds like you may need to rename this one to be exactly the name of the prior .apk that you pushed so that it overwrites the previous file... or you can remove the old one first and then push the new.

Does anyone know the push command?
I'm not sure if I'm doing it right.
adb push LatinIME.apk /system/app/
?
EDIT: Oh nevermind. It's right as long as you have the apk in the /tools directory

UPDATE I modified the Cognition 2.3 Beta 4 (Froyo) framework-res.apk and put in the monochrome battery mod. Power button menu works fine with this. I'm not quite sure who all created these I just mixed them.

Normal disclaimer: I'm not responsible for this not working on your phone or causing your phone damage. I can only guarantee it works on my Captivate with Cognition 2.3 Beta 4.
EDIT: Because the framework-res.apk is different on the latest Cognition v2.3b1+ (naturally since it's a different Captivate Froyo version), I created a new framework-res.apk for those. It's attached here. I will probably only keep the oldest and newest that I have available here. The first is for Cog 2.2B9 and the second is for Cog2.3B4.

Essentially yes. Because I'm not too familiar with ADB, I used Root Explorer. This is the exact process I used.
I first ransferred meter-framework-res.apk to my SDCard on the phone. Then opened Root Explorer on the phone and navigated to sdcard. I copied meter-framework-res.apk to /system/framework folder. I then renamed the original framework-res.apk to framework-res.apk.old. Then renamed meter-framework-res.apk to framework-res.apk. Then finally rebooted.

Hi folks,
With the recent port of WP7 to HD2 (credit to Cotulla, DFT, and other cooks), I know alot of HD2 users have tried it. I myself used it for about a couple of weeks, but I found that although it is great, it still was missing a couple of key features compared to android.
When I switched back, one of the thing that made me really regret was the keyboard.
After searching on XDA, I found this thread and figured it would easily work for us NAND users running Android.
It is a metamorph theme, but when I applied it, it didn't look right. The user who created the theme JAguirre1231 suggested that it didn't work correctly because the theme is suppose to be for the stock keyboard. This was a problem because I know alot of people prefer other CM, Sense or MIUI roms.
After doing some experimenting, I finally got it to work on the MIUI rom I'm using. The only thing is that this themed keyboard replaces the default and makes it the default. I'm not sure if you can add it, and keep the Sense keyboard or not.
*I DON'T TAKE ANY RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY PROBLEMS THAT MIGHT HAPPEN TO YOUR PHONE, DOING THIS IS AT YOUR OWN RISK* *ALSO REQUIRES ROOT*
NOTE: DON'T TRY TO INSTALL THE .APK DIRECTLY, IT HAS TO GO INTO THE SYSTEM OF YOUR PHONE
EDIT: FROYO ONLY(?)
Like I said, I have only tried this on the MIUI rom and I would advise you do backup or take precautions because this process involves editing the system files inside your phone.
Directions
----------------------------------------------------------------
1) You need Root Explorer (available in the marketplace) and the attached file

"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
2) After you have Root Explorer, put the attached "LATINIME.apk" file on your sd card
3) Boot up your phone and open Root Explorer
4) Make sure the file is on your SD card
5) Next, navigate to /system/app/ and you should find a "LATINIME.apk" file in there too
6) Be sure you hit the top button so it says (MOUNT R/O)
7) Just to be safe, rename it to something else, and copy and paste it into your sd card (if anything goes wrong, just replace it with this file back to /system/app)
8) Delete the "LATINIME.apk" in /system/app and next copy and paste the attached one into /system/app
9) Exit and your new keyboard should be like the ones shown below
10) DONE!
Note that this is merely a skin for the keyboard, and all the other android settings are still the same. I also found it isn't as accurate as the real thing, but still better than the stock froyo.
This tutorial was made with the permission of JAguirre1231 and I just thought it would be easier if I share it.

Can you tell me which rom you are using?
And did you put the LATINIME.API into /system/app? If you don't have root explorer you can try ADB? Or if your rom already has the default froyo keyboard, just use metamorph skin from post #1.

Hm, I'm not sure if this works on gingerbread. I think it only works on the standard froyo keyboard.
If you want to take another stab, trying using the stock .apk from here, and if it works, just use metamorph to theme the keyboard.
Then again its up to you.

Just download the file, rename it to update.zip, put it into the root of your SD card, and flash it. This does not replace your stock android keyboard.
Some users have reported the keyboard crashing when trying to change the settings or add a user dictionary.
Developers, if you can turn this into an .apk file for non rooted users, or solve the crashing problem, this would be great. No forum i could find has done this yet, but I have the most faith in the developers in this forum, good luck!

If it force closes on you, you must have changed settings, that's the only reason I can figure that would cause it.
I flashed it by update.zip and I can type perfectly on it, I just can't change setting because then it will force close. I'm sure someone on here can mod that keyboard and fix it though

I got the vibrate to work while i was trying to see if correction and dictionary would work so one thing down but i cant seem to find out how to make the correction and dictionary to work. http://www.mydroid.info/android-apps/optimus-2x-keyborad-android/ here is where i got the file thats smaller and you can just extract and install the keyboard. then if you move all the lib files into you lib folder on the phone and leave the permissions as is the vibration should work thats how it worked for me.
Can't get this to show up in locale and text. I was hoping to convert my wife from iphone to android by initially making her new phone as similar to an iphone as possible. Flashed in cwm. It said success. Can't find.

the keys are about as tall as they should be on a normal 4in screen.

Added a full-screen version. download the LatinIME_FULLSCREEN zip from below and install the same way as the rest
--UPDATE--
I need to make clear that this only works with cm7 based roms. no ics yet. im working on that next.
--UPDATE--
fixed autocorrect
fixed support for Neutrino V2.2
i think more languages got added. (confirm?)
if your building this in a source built rom you need to replace
/vendor/cyanogen/overlay/olympus/packages/inputmethods/LatinIME/java/res/dimens.xml
Click to collapse
with mine form my source post
That and you need to build Cyanogen-Olympus
that was also my mistake in the first build
this too is completely open and all of the changes i make can be seen though the commits on my github page
PLEASE FEEL FREE TO USE THIS IN YOUR ROM.
it can be implemented in a source built rom or via apk paste
(just give proper credits)

ICS (cm9 or aosp) TUTORIAL
download the ICS_LatinIME.zip
extract LatinIME.apk
I could not get it to work via adb. so i used root explorer.
download the ics zip file. follow the gingerbread instructions.
its basically the same thing. im just posting this because adb did not work for me.
dont forget about permissions!
I am not going to write another guide just for the keyboard. because its much simpler. if you would like to know how to compile it look at the launcher guide i posted below and just follow the compile steps and use LatinIME instead of Launcher2

Are the permissions set correctly? What rom are you using?
Still not persisting after reboot here as well. I am on CM9 by Jokersax. Permissions are set correctly.

CM7 is gingerbread, you just need to push it to the system/app folder and set permissions
