Coming back to Android! yay! - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
Ok apologies first, i'm sorry.
secondly, i've come back to my g1 after a horrible experience with Htc Hd2, the phone is lovely but unfortunately i am a android advocate.
Thirdly, i have searched and read and read and read (get the idea?) about upgrading downgrading, firmwares, cyanogen's, eclairs, donuts.
Basically ive now put myself in a confused bin, and would like anyones help.
I rooted my g1 ages ago, i now see you can run 2.1 on it? well that is what ive read.
But i am just completely lost from where to go now because it is already rooted
Firmware: 1.6
kernel: 2.6.29.6-cm42
mod: cyan 4.2.4
build DRC83
AND have a micro sdhc (4) 4gb card, now i have no idea what to do, i'm a completely novice at this and would appreciate any step by step instructions.

You'd better hit the ground right now if you know whats good for you

Straight from the original post of Cyanogen Mod 5.0.8's thread with minor modifications by myself.
INSTRUCTIONS:
- First time flashing CM-5?
1. Root your device and install Clockwork Recovery (ROM Manager on the market) or Amon_RA's recovery (Dream / Magic)
2. Do a Nandroid backup!
3. Install the DangerSPL if you don't already have it Install the radio BEFORE flashing the SPL!!!!!! OR YOU WILL KILL YOUR PHONE
4. WIPE (I cannot guarantee an upgrade from CM-4.2 to CM-5 will work)
5. Install the ROM
6. Reboot
7. Skip setup go to Menu / Settings / Applications and enable Apps 2 SD.
8. Reboot
6. Install the Google Addon if you want Google Applications like Gmail and Market
- Upgrading?
1. Do a Nandroid Backup!
2. Install the ROM (your Google apps will be backed up and restored automatically)
HOW TO REPORT BUGS OR PROBLEMS?
- Was it a hard reboot? Get me the file "/proc/last_kmsg".
- Was it a soft reboot or a "boot loop"? Run "adb logcat" and get me the full output.
- Pastebin links preferred
- Please use the issue tracker whenever possible!

OP:
Just go to Cyanogen's wiki and follow the instructions for coming from 4.X.
Since you are already rooted all you should have to do is:
1. wipe
2. install cyanogen (or whatever ROM) from recovery
3. don't forget Gapps!

Hi, thanks for most of your replies! Besides the one who is trying to mess up my phone, how kind of you.
So basically, because this is what i am
1. wipe <<< this means formatting the sd card? not partitioning it? or anything else?
2. install cyanogen (or whatever ROM) from recovery <<< how do i do this? i will download cyanogen when i find it and after 12 tonight (on t-mobile they cap dloads between 4pm an 12am :< )
3. don't forget Gapps! << before or after i do the above ^?
It took me 3weeks to root it, this should be great! :/ Plus when i start it means i have no internet then (i use my g1 teather) so ill format my sd card, dload the rom, and then hey presto?
really thanks alot again...

ps because i'm already rooted, i don't need to follow rogers dream do i?
once i format the sd card and then install the cyn rom that should be it? Pleeease help

no...don't format your sd
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.p...or_other_rooted_ROMS_to_5.0.x(Dream/Sapphire)
Follow that guide and you will be all set.
I am very upset that step 4 was deleted. That was the most important one.

i'm trying to find a download for the cynmod but now i have come across 5.0.8!< it was .7 before so should i download the new one do you think?

ok this is what i'm going to do....
1. Boot into Fastboot (Power on the phone holding the camera button) This will either show a screen with dancing androids or a "rainbow" splash. Here you will find the hboot/radio version:
* radio 1.x: You will need to upgrade this to a 2.x radio before running this process.. please upgrade and re-do this step (Ie. verify you see the updated radio in fastboot before continuing) <<<<How do i do this?
* radio 2.x: You may press MENU+SEND+END at the same time and proceed (unless hboot-1.33.2005 is installed; indicating you already have dangerSPL)
2. Copy DangerSPL (spl-signed.zip), CM 5.0.x, and gapps-ds-ERE36B (& Ebi1 port if required) to the root of your sdcard.
3. Reboot/Boot into your custom recovery by holding down the 'home' key before the G1 splash appears.
4. Make a Nandroid Backup (ext not required) (recommended for upgrading users, not required for freshly-rooted users) <<<i don't need to do this?
5. Flash DangerSPL (spl-signed.zip). It will install and then ask you to reboot to finish the installation, so reboot. It will then finish installing and reboot into recovery so you can flash your ROM. <<<so i flash by pressing alt+f?
6. Once back into recovery Wipe Data/Factory Reset <<< alt+w?
7. Flash CM 5.0.x THEN gapps-ds-ERE36B (& Ebi1 port if required); then reboot (Boot may take longer than normal) <<< i don't understand this bit.
8. Login to Android/Google as per usual
as you can see i'm kinda in a mess here, any info would be so grateful.

Do a search for Amon Ra's recovery in this forum, and flash that per his instructions in the first post. Then when you hold home while starting your phone, (keep holding home), you will boot into recovery. From there, you will be able to wipe, format, patition, etc. your SD card, and do a number of other things as well.
Other than that, follow Cyanogen's instructions as posted earlier in this thread.

[TUTORIAL] Update your rooted Nexus without a computer.

This is a tutorial for those who need the latest Rom but do not have a computer they can access. I would also like to note if you see your work in this tutorial and do not wish to have it, please send me an IM and I will remove it immediately.
First thing is first, of course make sure you are rooted with [Recovery]RA-nexus-v1.6.2 already on your phone. Also make sure you have a memory car in your phone. Finally I highly recommend using a wifi source.
Disclaimer: Myself and any other Developer are not responsible for anything that happens to your phone.
1. Download and install "ASTRO file manager (Metago)" from the android market so you can download the zip file
2. Find the ROM you wish to use and download it using the android browser and download it to your phone.
3. Open up ASTRO file manger /sdcard/downloads (or whatever your download folder is)
4. long press and edit, then click copy or move which ever you wish.
5. Place in /sdcard (also known as the root of the SD card)
6. Now turn off your phone and boot into recovery by holding the volume - (down) and power button.
7. Now in recovery follow the developers directions (if wipe needed do so now)
8. Now go to update from zip and you are done when it is finished flashing, you just need to reset the device.

will check in the morning on my N1 if anything comes up. Good night forums
this is great but not to burst your bubble but all you need is to download android zip from the market. that's what ive been using.
So, being new to android, maybe a dumb question, but do rooted users lose update possibilities?
I mean OTA ones?

Yes to an extent. Meaning you will not receive the update OTA. You will more than likely get it a couple weeks earlier than OTA. Rooted users always seem to get the jump over non rooted users. Devs like Enom and Cyanogen see to that.
Okay tutorial I suppose...it's better to just flash the RA recovery and then you don't have to name things update.zip

Of course, but you're getting features and updates sooner than OTA. Sometimes months sooner.
way to many steps, what you need to do is suck it up and install the RA recovery, then just download any rom leave it in the root of your sd card and boot to recvoery and hit flash zip from sd, and select the zip done!

Thats what I would do when I was on my G1.
Don't need to rename the zip like others have said but I can understand why it would be easy for noobs. The only thing I see missing is telling how to reboot in recovery (volume down + power --> Recovery)
Sorry all its my first attempt at a step by step process for those who have just started rooting and flashing other roms. I know it may be lengthy for experienced users, I will be next to my computer and refine the process for all users hopefully tomorrow. But I'm in vacation in St Augustine for the time being.
All input is welcome, and thanks for the helpful comments.

Ok I've simplified the process now basically like th3fallen stated in later comments, once again if you have questions let me know

After installing a new rom my phone freezes at the 2nd load screen

I did everything right and after I reboot when in safe mode, it loads the "tmobile G1 screen but the 2nd load screen loads forever and does not change. I waited over an hour last night and it did not finish loading.
Should be in Q&A mate.
What rom ? what version ? what does it say if you run a logcat.
Try reflashing it via the recovery console.
safe mode refers to windows and recovery mode is the one your talking about. You should at least give other info like your SPL,radio,ROM,recovery,etc..
The ROM is SuperD192
using latest spl and radio
is there any other roms that you recommend?

2. ran the recovery
3. rebooted in recovery mode and flashed the radio
4. rebooted again and flashed the spl.
5. rebooted and flashed the ROM

but anyway,
take out the SD Card, and open it on your computer
copy all the files into a new directory call my Phones SD card
now put it back in the phone
go into recovery
somewhere in the Recovery (I'm not going to give any specifics, which is tbh only fair cos you didn't give any. )
is format/part SD Card, do it ....
swap size,,, I duno, 32mb,64mb, 96mb? up to you...
Ext2 errm 512mb is good
rest is fat32
now, put your ROM on the sd card , and flash it
...
next time Wipe Data/cache , Dalvik-cache, sd:ext before you flash the ROM
Oh and do a nandriod back up BEFORE you wipe Data/cache , Dalvik-cache, sd:ext, before you flash the ROM and might be a good idea to read up next time before you Wipe Data/cache , Dalvik-cache, sd:ext before you flash the ROM Oh and do a nandriod back up BEFORE you wipe Data/cache , Dalvik-cache, sd:ext, before you flash the ROM
so i am going to use this as a recovery instead? and just follow the same steps i did in the past?
Pm me, I'll walk you through sorting this out in simple plain english.

I apologize, stupid SEO plugin was rewriting the url and messing up a seperate plugin. Links are now working if you still need to upgrade.
My tutorial shows you how to root and upgrade everything and install cyanogenmod 4.2.15.1 if you want to try the 2.1 version which is in testing, go to the cyanogenmod repository on my site, go into the testing folder for the G1 and download that rom instead. Use that rom instead of 4.2.15.1 as the final step.

Thanks for all the answers! I think I have a good understanding of what I need to do now, so here goes...
*crosses fingers*
I'm following the instructions on myhangoutonline.com.
Well, so far so good, with some minor hiccups:
During the downgrade your phone step, when the phone says "Press the action key" after step 6, it's talking about the trackball button. Took me a little while to figure that out.
However, after I pressed it, it just went back to the initial multicolor gradient screen, with the addition of a line in the middle that said "Serial0". (maybe it was there before, but I missed it?) I ended up having to pull the battery because I could figure out how to make it reboot.
After reboot I had to go through the Google sign in process. Not a big deal, but it'd be nice to mention that this is necessary.
Upgrading recovery seemed to go pretty much as described. On to the apparent dangerous step of upgrading the radio & spl!
Uh oh! It looks like something didn't work. I started up in recovery mode, but there's no option in the menu for "Mount SD card".
I tried going to console, then "ls /sdcard", but no files show up, and /sdcard doesn't show up as a mounted filesystem when I run "mount".
I couldn't figure out how to get out of the console ("exit" just took me back to a "press enter" prompt, and then back into the console), so I ended up pulling the battery again.
Now what? Should I try upgrading recovery again?

Froyo Fatigue

Dear members, Like always i first of all would like to thank you all for the great effort and hard work all of you have put into this wonderful site.
I am a noob with a rooted nexus one. ( i was begining to think of myself a step above noob recently but trying to update my phone to froyo made me realize i still am a noob.
I so want to update to froyo NOW without waiting for the OTA update but i just cant figure out how to. i downloaded the FR50 ( with and without radio ) but both failed. SO i figured it must be due to stock recovery. So i went to Amon Ra's thread to flash the new recovery image using terminal but after placing the image on the sdcard when i enter the flash image command , it says " image not found " when its most definitely there on the sdcard and i checked the spellings over and over again but it just wont flash and as a result i still cant enjoy froyo
I am sooooo sorry if i posted this thread in the wrong section but i really could use some guidance from the most intelligent Android people i know .
Regards,
Nadeem
It's basically a 4 step process, but make sure you did all of them.
1) Unlock Bootloader
2) Apply Root. I used this method, quick and painless: http://android.modaco.com/content/g...-erd79-frf50-superboot-rooting-the-nexus-one/
3) Flash Recovery using ADB.
3a) Recommended: Do a Nandroid backup image of your Stock 2.1u1, just in case something wierd happens during your flash.
4) Flash FRF50 ROM w/Radio. You want the version with the new Radio, as I believe 2.2 won't work with the 2.1 radio without tinkering.

It works for the most part, but you'll get a crash if you try to record video without updating the radio.
Wait...you put the Recovery image on your SDCard? It should be on your harddrive. You push the the image from the HDD to the phone. Unless there's some other way I don't yet know about.

Well, I'm glad I at least the gist of the material is sticking. I browse this place just about every day trying to keep myself from bricking my phone. If I do, it's back to my Nokia E71, and being forced to use Symbian after Android 2.2...not pleasant at all.
I highly appreciate the super quick response ATnTDUde
The first two steps in your method describe how to get root i presume....
Actually i already rooted my Nexus 1 and i am fairly certain the bootloader is unlocked too ( i see a small padlock unlocked every time i turn my N1 on)
Oh so i am going to have to flash the AMon Ra recovery image using ADB. actually on Amon's thread there was another method of flashing the image using terminal which i tried and failed at. I'll most definitely try ADB method once i get back home.
Just wanted to ask you a quick question Sir.
Once i flash Amon Ra's recovery image i assume i wont be getting any OTA updates from google ???? right ....
Also if i want to go to the stock recovery image ( is there a way to do so ? ) will i start getting OTA updates
Please some one help with the two questions above coz i cant start the process without knowing.

Hey there, I flashed my IS into a sense 3.0 gingerbread 2.3 ROM. It took me 3 days LMAO
I know that when I was doing it I needed all the help I could get.
If anyone wants to know how I did it to help you on your way than reply.
I will be happy to help.
Please note that I only know how to do what "I" did. I am not an expert in any way..and only know how to help with getting the **Virtuous Unity 1.27.0 Sense 3.0 based on Pyramid** onto your phone.
Happy Flashing!!! I am very happy with this ROM ... It is the best one out there taken from the official shipping release of HTC.

Ah, but how do you know it's the best one if it's the only one you've used?
Because it has many good reviews. It its the best one in terms of getting the sense 3.0 and gingerbread 2.3. Which is what the new HTC Sensation has. Also it is a shippping release which pretty much means that it is the real deal.
Ok, for reference, what did you do. Already S OFF and rooted. Does the new MOD have better battery performance?
I am on my way to work as of now and will copy and paste what I had done later. I am noticing right now that the battery is not the most optimal. But we will see. I flashed virtuous unity BTW. Sense 3.0 with 2.3 gingerbread

You need to S-OFF your phone (otherwise it wont work) This is the first step:
(1) GoHere...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XshvRmAcgm8 This is an awesome youtube video of how to S-OFF with AlpharevX
** After that you need to install the CWM recovery but first (instead of looking at alpharevX's difficult instruction) Do THIS:
(2) Go here(easy step)
This will give you instructions on downloading a Flasher. What that does is flash certain things onto your device while its plugged in.
**Once you have downloaded that, go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...php?p=14693680 (only download the recovery image for Incredible S)
It is the 3rd step I do believe.
When you are done downloading it. Go into the file and grab the file called recovery (image file) and drag it to your "downloads" folder.
**Open up Android Flash 1.8 and plug in your device. Click on Recovery on the left hand side. It will prompt you to a folder (it wants you to open the Recovery image file I told you to place in "downloads") Either way....find that file!!
Click on the file and Android flasher will do the rest.
Im pretty sure it boots your screen for you but if it doesnt
YOU NOW HAVE CLOCKWORKMODE RECOVERY
To see if you successfully downloaded it:
** Power down your phone
**Press and hold the DOWN volume and POWER button
**Move the volume up and down keys to select "RECOVERY" it is second down I do believe
**Press the POWER button to select "Recovery"
**You will now be prompted to a screen witch is CMW recovery.
After that go to the "reboot" option.
(3) To ROOT your phone(last step)
Go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...php?p=14693680
Just follow thier instructions. Its pretty easy!
After that you will want to download this recovery http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1104765 It works the best with the flashing ROMS. If you feel comfortable downloading this recovery first than it is up to you. Like I said I downloaded the clockworkmode recovery first so that I can get the phone rooted via AlphaRev's instructions. Any questions???

Are you running many apps, using auto sync and a live wallpaper? Really like what the stock ROM has to offer including the Sense, just want better battery performance which I suppose every smartphone owner wants in the end

So flashing the actual ROM wasn't a problem? I take it you don't have to S OFF the radio in order to flash a new radio with this ROM to get the best out of it?

No flashing the ROM isnt the problem. If you have to get a radio for the ROM than that is apparently the most trickiest part. Please do it with caution and read instructions carefully. You need to S-OFF to get a ROM...and I am pretty sure you need to ROOT to get a rom aswell. Sorry about the links..I have no idea why they are broken. I will try to find them.

If you like the stock ROM then I suggest Android Revolution HD. It's built from the IS stock release but with bloatware removed, optimised for better battery life and more customisable. Virtuous Unity ROM gets you Sense 3.0, but that comes with higher power demands thanks to all the extra fancy graphics and such.
Oh, and for reference, you don't necessarily need radio S-OFF to flash a new radio, but you do need to do it carefully as you can brick your phone if you don't follow the correct process exactly.
Thanks. I have been undecided on weather or not to flash ARHD. When you say carefully, do you mean following the his flashing procedure step by step, or are you refering to flashing the radio? Obviously want to flash the radio to get the most out of the ROM.
Yeah I mean follow instructions carefully. What I used was ask. Its not too difficult but you have to read. Go and Google sdk. Download it, u are going to have to retrieve your drivers for ur phone. But just follow the instructions on downloading sdk etc... I will put up a link of where I got it from. You just have to follow instructions that's all..and yes the radio is needed if you are upgrading to gingerbread when flashing a new rom.
