DRM'ed iTunes music on Android? - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My wife has had an iphone for about 18 months, but she's really eyeing the AT&T Aria.. She has about 250 songs in her iTunes catalog, and frequently picks up random other new songs from the catalog, sometimes from the laptop, sometimes directly from her phone.
If she switches to the Aria, can she sync her iTunes music over? The answer I'm getting is that it has to have the DRM removed, otherwise no it won't play.. Gotta love that lock-in.
If this is the answer, I'll do my net research as appropriate.. But thinking surely there are other methods?
In that same vein, if she wants to continue to purchase music and keep in sync with her computer, any suggestions? She doesn't like iTunes, but at least she has the same music on both, plus she has an ipod that she uses sometimes..
Personally I just have mp3s and sync with rsync.. But she wants it easy.

Okay, so responding to myself here after more googling.
Looks like anything purchased up to a year ago should be what's called "iTunes Plus" which means it's not DRMed and should play in Android as-is. Anything older can be ugpraded at a price to "Plus" ($.30 or so a song).
DoubleTwist behaves similar to iTunes on the PC and the phone.
Anyone have input? Appreciate it

Old non-"plus" songs can be burnt to a cd and re-imported into itunes. This is somewhat time consuming but works well.

Lol. Extra cost to listen to what you paid for...

Not all that surprising coming from the company that wants extra money (iPhone bumpers) to make calls/get reception from from the phone you paid for.

Yeah, I know.. Actually turns out she has 250ish songs, 64 of them are non-plus, and about 30+ of those are nonsense crap she doesn't care about anyway, so not too big a deal.
She's played with her Aria all night, every 5 minutes "oooh!". And keeps saying how much faster it is than her old ipony.
And finally when she got it and got on GCal she said "oooh, I see why you wanted me to get on here, it's easy to add something to your calendar!"
So took a while, but at least she's figuring it out
Now back on subject, I think TuneSync is looking like the best option.... That way she can continue to buy music the way she does today, sync it to her ipod, etc..

Kimona users?

Is anyone using it? I just heard about it last thursday. I am using the free version because the only services I need to use are Orb and Youtube. It has some connection issues. Has anyone else experienced this?
Do you mean Kinoma? What are you talking about?

I have the full version, which is awesome. I use it on my mega commute to and from work. The connection issues always seem to happen in the same spots every day. I imagine it has to do with the area you're in. And it's not just youtube or orb. It happens with internet radio and the like.

What's it like for playing WMV video from storage? I'm looking for a better way than Windows Pocket Media Player as I don't like the screen tearing I get at over 15 fps.
Not trying to bring back such an old thread, but I don't want to start a new one since this is already here.
I've been using Kinoma the past week or so and I absolutely LOVE it. I'm using the free version and my connection is STELLAR. I can stream the 128K streams without any bufferring issues 90% of the time, and I never have any issues with the 96k streams. I'm going to purchase the full version so I can get my old Radio stations back and also get access to Live TV and what-not. There's literally thousands of radio stations on Kinoma. I highly reccomend it.

Plus the full version also plays podcasts. No more having to d/l six different media players just to enjoy all your media and online media,
$29.99 is a lot steeper than free, but when you think of what you spent on software for your PC, it is more in line.
I really like also.
Does it utilise the TyTN II's hardware acceleration yet?
I realise that it's pretty good at playing a multitude of media types/sources but does it use the latent graphics acceleration capabilities of the MSM7200 chip in my TyTN II yet? I believe the upcoming Coreplayer 2.0 is planned to do this (even though the current version doesn't). I'm using TCPMP at the moment which limps along with DivX video in the mean time and have no need to play other additional media types.

They do offer TrialPay. I signed up for a RealNetworks (yuk) trial, and got it for free. Canceled the trial the next day.
ASX Support?
I'm using Freeplay. I checked the Kinoma Blog and it says the either Play or Freeplay can handle .asx playlist. I tried Freeplay and .asx playlist did not. I was presented with an "unsupported format" error. Has anyone gotten .asx playlist to work on Play or Freeplay? I need this feature for MS Voice Command to work with the player. VC produces .asx playlists.
Yeah, I agree, Kinoma Freeplay is amazing. They have ALL the episodes of MacGyver! Suddenly I find myself not doing any homework during my free periods. As for the connection issues, I don't have any problems at school, but I can't really even use it at home because of my bad data connection. And as for the hardware acceleration, i was wondering that myself. The actual program menus are animated and run really smooth, so maybe. Also, no screen tearing. Anyway, those are just my thoughts.
Dave
The screen transitions are nearly perfect. I'm going to purchase the full version tomorrow I think. I'll write up my impressions after I use it for a few days.
have it
I have a full version, I like it a lot and i use it as main player, only thing i dont like is even if u buy the full version you still need a vip subscription to use a lot of services! I dont like buying the same app over and over again

Best software for Live TV viewing?

I've searched but cannot really find exactly what I'm looking for so I thought I would make my first thread. This is the question, what can you recommend as far as Streaming Live TV via an Application or even using a Browser.
Looking for someones perspective that does a lot of streaming and has tested and perfected their process.
=p
I know you said this is your first thread........
So I will tell you before anyone eats you up, before making a new thread always do a search first. For 3 reason, 1st it will get people from getting mad and not end up giving you anything, second you might even find something esle that you like and for third you might even find what you are looking for.
All I did was take the 3 words from your sentence "Live TV Viewing" and did a search. And look what I found Click Here , and if this is not what you are looking for just keep searching............
I did not mean to come at you as a hard a$$ but just wanted to give you a heads up, just in case you need to post anything else.
@gsessons: That's hardly a good site in my opinion for live tv streaming. It's very hard to find some good streaming applications and sites, even for the computer. I personally use Orb (orb.com) to stream live tv from my computer (which has a TV Tuner that I installed). Orb is the optimal TV Streaming but you will need a TV Tuner to do so.
If you do not have a TV Tuner, SPB Online has several online streams - but none that actually interest me (they just updated the list of available channels a few days ago as well to add more).
Those are my two suggestions - you can search, but as you can see..it doesn't bring up the best results....
slingbox and slingplayer mobile
I use orb, too. You get all of your channels that have at home where ever you go. However you need to have a high speed connection at home and on your phone so no DSL at home. Also you need to install a TV tuner which isn't hard and I think you can even use a usb one.
I have ORB and Slingmobile.
For live TV, nothing is better than Slingmobile.
You get full control of your TV FAST on my sling while ORB live takes awhile to start, no remote control function on remotes for Ondemand channels and such.
Slingbox owns.

+1 Excellent
I agree. Slingmobile is amazing. I have had mine for about 3 years now and used it on a treo, mogul, and now my touch pro. the upfront costs are the only downside to a slingbox. it pays for itself in the long run.
Been looking at Slingbox and having everything DIRECTV has to offer it would make sense to hook that baby up to a Slingbox. =p
Can randomly find a cheap slingbox if you keep your eyes open I've just never sprung to the opportunity, thanks for the advice sometimes I forget you can sling to cell phones rather than just PC's or what not.
yep, Orb and Slingbox.

N1 as a music player?

How many of you use your N1 as a music player? I dropped my ipod at the gym and i think its slowly on its way out.
Would it be worth investing in a 32GB micro SD card for the phone and use it or just stick to ipod's?
Great

I use mine all the time. I have a 16gb. I think $130 for a 32gb is crazy. $30 for a 16gb is smart until prices drop.
I use a custom rom that ups the media volume and a new pair of Sony Headphones and this thing is rocking Pandora and my local library with ease.
I also have the trackball skip mod that skips to the next song by double tapping the trackball when the screen is off.... my sony headphones also have a track control.
I now use my N1 for everything. I take it with me to the gym or when I go out for a jog. I use it to stream internet radio or internally stored music through the bluetooth in my car (and gps).
On a recent road trip my wife wanted to watch a movie on hers so she connected to the cars bluetooth, mounted her N1 and watched the movie with surround sound on the road.
I have a 16gb card now but I think I'll be going to 32gb soon.
The N1 can replace pretty much everything in my opinion.

haha thats pretty good!! How long does your battery usually last for? 1.5 days?
Im not totally sure. If I'm at work listening to it or playing with it I have the chance to toss it onto the charger alot. In my car I charge too.
The few times I've forgotten to charge it while at work I get to my car at the end of the day and there is anywhere from 60-75% battery left after listening to music for part/most of the day.
When it comes to video or the screen being on you're not going to last long, on any phone.
My work days are typically 8am-5pm with an hour lunch in there somewhere. The music isnt going constantly because I have work related stuff that I need to pause it for but I've been know to polish off three to four 1 hr+ long podcast a day on rare occasions, lol.
I use my N1 for music, too - I have it syncing with MediaMonkey quite nicely for local music, plus Last.FM and a few other streaming apps.
I only have 2 real complaints about it:
1. No genre support - I listen to my music like I listen to FM radio - by genres. I.e. I'll be like, 'hmm, think i want to listen to some Country music today' as opposed to album or artist. I have all my music tagged with the correct genre, but I have yet to find an Android music player app that reads this particular tag and lets me browse by genre. It's really quite frustrating. The only one I know of is the music player in Sense UI, but I obviously don't have (or really want) that entire UI on my N1.
2. Doesn't sync back ratings or last played/playcount meta - Since I only have an 8GB microSD, I have a few autoplaylists setup in MediaMonkey that are limited in size and populate themselves with music from a specific genre that I haven't listened to in the past 30 days - it's a great way to keep my collection fresh. Unfortunately, syncing these to my phone is pointless because the phone doesn't track that I've listened to them, if that makes sense?
Aside from that, it's great. I connect the thing to everything - I have a pair of Bose in-ear earphones that fit *awesome*, and I just picked up a pair of Plantronics Backbeat 903s that work great, too. I have a 3.5mm audio in on my truck that I use when I'm in the car, too.

Those additions would be awesome to be honest. When you have large libraries of music it can get to be a bit much if you're wanting a specific genre at the time. I usually just shuffle all but it would be nice to have this.

I don't think you said what you use to play back the music, I'm guessing the built-in media player? Never used it myself... bTunes has a genre browser and you can play from it..
Just wish bTunes didn't insist on looking like an iPhone, stupid quirky fake looking interface..
I sold my ipod because i have a 16gb card but i still get kinda anal because my battery still deosn't last very long and listening to music alot shortens it even more
im playing mp3s on my new win-7 laptop over a bluetooth connection to my phone right now
I love my N1 as a music player. iPods will never give me Pandora at the gym unless the gym itself has wifi. Plus, I won't miss phone calls while I'm working out.
Thanks for the reply guys, appreciate it!
Think i'll save the cash and just get a 32GB card and thrash the phone around.
Can you recommend any good earphones with controls? or stock ears phones just as good?
I use my N1 as a music player a lot...It works great at home or traveling!

allot of those features are built into the CM6 RC1. The latest nightly adds even some more functions. Like controlling the music with your volume paddle like all the other CMs as well as controlling the music on your lock screen. I love it.
Cause im planning on using a 32Gb SD card, does the N1 handle a lot of music fairly ok? I'll probably be putting on about 3000 songs (this is how much my ipod had)

[Q] Stream video from home computer?

So, Ive looked around the internet, and this forum, and cant seem to find an easy way to stream video from my home computer to my phone. I can use gmote when Im at home, and thats neat and all, but it would be nice to not have to download everything to my phone. I know Iphone has a few apps for that, are there any decent ones for android?
Thanks in advance for the help!!

Are you talking about a different app you could you at home over wifi? Or remotely over 3G? I use Allshare at home and it works well.
Oh sorry, I mean when Im out and about over 3g or wifi from another source. Ive used allshare and Gmote and they both work wonderfully when Im home. But as for when Im out and about, I havent heard of anything reliable.
Why not give Winamp Remote a try? I used to use that on my old iPhone 3G. You run a server-app on your PC, select which directories to share (video/audio), and access these directories from your phone via a login that you setup. On the iP3G, access was established through a normal browser.
Interesting. I tried something like that today, by using a different server type program and a certain video player, but it gave me a lot of errors and the videos had a lot of trouble playing (well, sound but no video, at the most). Not just HD movies either, movies that play just fine from my SD card wouldnt play (just to test it out). I wonder if this program would have those same problems? It sounds almost identical is why I say
Well, audio worked for me without a hitch. The UI was alright, and synchronicity was superb. Video worked well for me too, but I must admit that I didn't use this feature so much because iPhones were/are really finicky with resolutions and file-types. I was forced to pre-convert every video I intended to stream beforehand to an appropriate format and reso', and store two copies of everything on my HDisk: the original high-quality copy for desktop-viewing, and another for iPhone streaming... but that's just Crapple, right? Android is much more flexible when it comes to video-containers (among other things), so I see no potential problems for you—especially if you're using videos that play back fine on stock if stored locally (on your phone). Why don't you give Winamp Remote a shot, and report your findings...? It shouldn't take more than fifteen minutes to setup.
That actually makes perfect sense, well, I think Im going to call it a night tonight. but by thursday or friday I will get on that and report my findings!! thank you very much for the help and I will get back to you as soon as I get the chance. Oh college life lol.
Sure man, no proll'em. I hear you
Try using a program called orb. Works wonders for me!
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897
Dude, Orb is Winamp Remote! Hahaha...
"Vlc stream & convert “from the market (freeware is doing the job - but the $4 are worth it for the Pro version)
Quality wise is the best.
You need to do some work on your router at home to forward 2 ports.
This one is the best so far.

[Q] Newbie begging help

Hello!
I am looking for something that does not seem to exist. I registered here in hopes that the brilliant minds of XDA might be able to offer me a solution.
I want Bluetooth hands-free calling on my desktop PC.
Let me explain: I work in my garage. I use my garage PC as my only music source. I use it for email and web stuff too, of course, but its main job is providing a streaming source for music from the server in my house.
When I am working and my phone rings, I cannot hear my phone. Tablesaws and routers and sanders are noisy, and the music is blasting.
What I want is the same thing my $200 car stereo does: mute or pause the music and announce the caller ID through my speakers. When I am done with the call, resume the music.
Seems simple, doesn't it? I have been googling this for quite some time. No answers anywhere, it seems.
If/when I push the button to answer, I want to use a microphone and my speakers to talk on the phone...simple as that. Yes, I know, there are a hundred ways of doing this other than my PC (stream to tablet, BT to tab, tablet to stereo, etc.) but nothing is going to live very long in all this sawdust (including my PC, but I don't care) so the goal is to have to buy nothing but a BT dongle and some software.
So...since I work on stereo stuff for a living, the stuff you guys do is a complete mystery to me, but I know what I want.
Does anyone know of an app that does this? If not, it seems to me that this would be a fairly marketable thing, does anyone have an interest in developing this?
Thanks for looking, and hope you have some brilliant answers for my dilemma.
Thanks!
Luke Fisher
well if you plug your phone into the speakers and play music of it like Pandora or even download your own music. Then when you get a call the music will stop and your ring-tone will play through the speakers till you pick up the call or miss the call.

Yes this is true, there are no cross platforms apps that really do what you want. This will happen probably in the next years it has to do with getting the platforms to work together.
I looked into this a couple of months ago, I did find a work around if you want to operate in linux........ then you can get the phone and computer to work together but then you are doing your own custom programming...... and you just want an app sounds like you do not want to be the programmer
Maybe someone else knows more and chime in............

Linux? Isn't that Charlie Browns best friend? Has a sister named Lucy, right?
Guys, my phone is a POS, ain't gonna go there at all. Samsung Instinct S30, until I find what I need a phone to do I am not giving up any money at all.
I know I can connect a cell phone to a PC with nothing but a simple BT dongle, but getting it to pause the music is the tough part.
Maybe I will just get another JVC KD-R900 and use it for shop tunes. I could run the shop stereo from it, just use the AUX in on the JVC from the PC.
Oddly enough, I listen to full albums, often several from the same artist, so I have no use for broadcast radio, nor sattelite or internet radio, just full CDs on my hard drive.
Thanks for the input so far, guys!

Hmm... I have just done something similar with my phone.
Here's the setup:
You'll need:
1. A hi-fi system
2. An Android phone (any would do, but some of the apps in Andriod is critical)
3. 16-32gb sd-card
4. Bluetooth dongle for answering phones
Plug your phone into the hifi using the stereo sound jack, and plug your phone into the charger. Play music straight from the phone, and when it rings, you can set certain music apps to mute the music while letting the ringtone through. I'm quite sure that the default music app from el Goog, does that well.
