Nexus One, Froyo (FRF85B), 3G on AT&T in NYC
Same thing happened on FRF50 and 2.1
Here's a screenshot:

Any ideas?
EDIT: I found a bugreport that appears to be related. So this isn't new. Has anyone found a solution?

I don't seem to have gotten this problem on AT&T in SFO, going directly from EPE54B to FRF85B. However, I recall seeing some posts about this when FRF50 came out. If I'm not mistaken, they may have solved it by clearing the Proxy setting in Mobile network settings -> Access Point Names.

Access point names contains only Cingular 410, wap.cingular
I don't have a proxy setting there, btw.

So you're saying the Proxy setting inside Cingular 410 is already blank? Or there is no Proxy setting present at all?

Ah, I see what you mean. If I click on the APN, there are more settings inside, with the proxy wireless.cingular.com. Should I remove that?

Yes, removing the Proxy value should do it. I'm not sure if you need to reboot or anything. Good luck.

You, sir, are a life saver!
It works!
Why did I get a proxy value in the first place?

It probably comes from the settings AT&T sends your phone when it auto-configures itself for the network. My last AT&T smartphone (Tilt 2) came pre-configured with the Proxy setting as well. AT&T is trying to lower the strain on their network by re-compressing images for as many people as it can.

To the point of making them totally illegible.
Thanks for all your help!

what happened is it seems google tried to play nice with ATT, so google must have started adding the proxy setting for att in the access point list. this saves ATT some bandwidth by reducing the quality of images and going thru ATT's proxy. every unlocked phone i've owned i've made sure to delete the proxy info as it always messed up my images like that.
wonder why google tried to play nice with ATT? to get on their good graces maybe?

T-Mobile do the same thing in the UK. Didn't know it's possible to fix it though.

APN problems on all ROMS.

Hi guys, I've always noticed that every now and then my APN name gets changed for some reason. I'm on Orange UK and my APN is OrangeInternet and sometimes I notice it changes to OrangeInternetapnsuffix. Anybody know what's the reason for this, as it alters my APN thus causing me to not be able to connect.
Thanks

You are probably using some software (ala juice defender) who take control of the access point, to disable the APN they usually append some suffix. I think I have read that froyo has a better way to do this for developer now
So ROM version has nothing to do with this...
thing is im not actually using anything to alter my APN? i understand what you mean as I did use those apps before but since then have stopped and its still happening :S strange!

[Q] Bought used phone, no signal / poor reception

Hi all,
I have a question to those more knowledgeable about GSM network/settings (I come from a CDMA background). I bought my girlfriend a Captivate on EBay for Christmas; everything is working OK except it cannot get any signal. As far as I know everything is set up as it should, it just won't show any bars. While using the ServiceMode app [*#0011#] it goes from NO SERVICE to GSM : LIMITED and back over and over. While using her old phone in the same spot it has full bars. We went to the ATT store and made sure everything was set up on their end. I think the phone is defective but I figured I would check here first. I'll attach some relevant (I think) screen caps and if anything jumps out or you have anything for me to try and fix this, please let me know.
edit/
Also does anyone know the exact location of the internal antenna? I opened the phone up to see if something came lose during shipment or whatever and I didn't really get anywhere. I wanted to try and jury rig a extended antenna to see if that helped reception.
You flashed that ROM/theme on the phone? Or it came like that when you bought it?
That is Serendipity 5.1.. I figure while she can't use the phone as a phone, she should still benefit from a nice rom and kernel. When I received the phone originally it had the stock rom. Before I flashed a custom I made sure to check everything out first and the problem was there since the beginning. Since then I've flashed back to stock, tried different radios, etc etc but the results are always the same.
I don't know what the person before me did to the phone though, maybe he/she flashed something incorrectly and wrote over important settings? I don't know what I'm looking at that's really why I am asking here.
Grabbed some more settings, anything seem strange or wrong?
Stupid question, but do you have an active AT&T Sim card in the Phone? btw, these phones absolutely, positively will not work on Sprint or any other CDMA carrier.

Yes I have her new Sim card which was activated at the store over the weekend. I can switch it between her two phones, old one full bars, Captivate no bars.
Check you APN Settings. Menu> Wireless and networks > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names and let us know what they are, and we can go from there.
Says ATT WAP
Tap where is says att wap and check the settings to see if they match these:
Name: ATT WAP
APN: wap.cingular
Proxy: wireless.cingular.com
Port: 80
Username:not set
Password:not set
Server: not set
MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS Proxy: wireless.cingular.com
mms port - 80
mcc 310
mnc 410
authentication type - none
apn type- internet + mms
If not, adjust them accordingly and see if it clears up. If not I'd say you have a serious hardware problem.
Those settings look good to me. Thanks for the help I suppose my problem is more serious. Anyone know of anything else I can check to maybe narrow my problem down? I'm not afraid to try and replace a radio/circuit board/internal antenna.
enter *#2263# and check that band selection is set to automatic.
Yep set to AUTOMATIC - Select GSM & WCDMA All Bands
Is there something equivalent to a PRL for GSM phones? Something that tells it what towers it can connect to?
idk if its related but i have poor signal problems too with my phone sometimes only shows bars and no h or edge and sometimes just says no service or emergency calls only
Yeah same here, right now it says Emergency calls only. I know for a fact that there are at least 6 GSM cell towers in this vicinity.
Can this issue have something to do with a failed unlocking attempt? I've been trying to research all routes and I tried to "unlock" to phone by using SGS Unlock Tool (rooted method), it was never successful. It states "Sorry, no codes found unknown error", possibly meaning that something internally is screwed up? I'm just pulling stuff out of my bum at this point. Any help will be appreciated!
Last bump for the weekend. Any suggestions? Already bought a new one but I still have 30 days to return it if I can figure out how to fix this.

[A] AT&T Monthly Data Only APN Broadband Setttings

Since I've replied to about 4 threads already with the same answer, I figured I would post this here and maybe have it made a sticky.
If you have recently flashed a new non AT&T Rom (Euro,Gingerbread, Overcome, CM7, etc..) you Galaxy Tab will not have the correct APN setting for your monthly data sim from AT&T.
The fix:
Go to Settings
Wireless & Network
Mobile Networks
Access Point names and make sure you have one called Broadband (assuming you are on the ATT monthly data only plan)
If you dont, create a new APN:
Name: Broadband
APN: Broadband
Just leave the other options as is, save it & select it.
I think by default it comes up with the ATT wap.cingular APN which doesnt work with the Tab Data plan.
OMG You're a lifesaver!
I just flashed my respiffied $200 AT&T Galaxy Tab with Overcome 2.0, and have been beating my head into the wall trying to flash modems and do all kinds of resets.
Thank you so much!
Weird part is, I had this exact problem when I activated a data plan for the first time on my AT&T tab a few days ago. Checked, and I had I already had an APN called "APN Broadband" so I thought it was a different problem. After fighting it for a while, I decided to create the new one with the name "Broadband" with the exact same settings as the "APN Broadband" one, and it worked perfectly! Apparently, the name is critical!
I just went through the same thing with my new AT&T Galaxy Tab. I had to modify one of the entries noted above to get it to work.
Name : APN Broadband (not ATT Broadband)
APN: Broadband
I'm happy camping again.

BTW, my Galaxy Tab is rooted using SuperOneClick.
OK, now I'm confused. As previously stated, I changed the APN name to APN Broadband and APN to Broadband and the wireless data started working. I turned on wifi, opened some random web pages, then shut off wifi. Now I'm not connecting to AT&T wireless data. I check the APN's again and the tab reverted back to the factory ATT Broadband. I swapped it back to the new APN I created (APN Broadband) and still could not get data. Now I changed back to the factory ATT Broadband, still no data. I began searching for more input. After 5+ minutes, I saw the 3G icon and I can reach the internet and market. I am new to Android devices, so I may be wrong, but I am not convinced I am done working this issue. If anyone else is has encountered this issue and have permanently fixed it, please add some food for thought.

Very interesting, as the one I had named "APN Broadband" is the one that would drop service whenever I opened Market, and I had to do exactly what the OP stated in his post to get it to work.
On a side note, I have noticed that it switches back to the default "APN Broadband" everytime I cycle airplane mode. I have to go back into the settings and choose "Broadband" again. Maybe I should just delete the old "APN Broadband" APN and hope it doesn't screw anything up.
Delete it. It will only make things easier for you.
Thanks!
RichAP, thank you very much for the APN info!
I spent the morning trying various combinations of uppercase, lowercase, password, no password entries with the wap.cingular.com APN. I did a bunch of searches and finally found this post. Didn't believe it could be as easy as just entering "broadband" into the APN settings, lol.
My AT&T 7" Galaxy Tab is now up and running with Overcome 7 v4.1 and using 3G. Yay!
(edit: yes I posted this as my first post just so I could hit the thanks button.)
I know this is an old thread but it helped me out recently, however, I found I had to use a regular phone SIM in my Note 4 Edge to add the Broadband APN and then switch back to the broadband SIM. If anyone is searching this issue and having a similar problem I hope this info might be helpful.

[Q] Droid 3 xt862 mms/wap settings on Alltel

I've got an xt862 activated on Alltel but am unable to get mms/web configured and working. It does work on web when connected to Wifi but of course if I'm going to use this device I need mobile web. It works for talk and text but no mms and no web.
I had to manually put in the MDN/MIN in order to get my number programmed. I am in one of the few areas where Verizon and Alltel are supposedly separate. After manually programming MDN then *228 would dial to Alltel prompt as opposed to VZW's prompt before I programmed manually. The phone seems to have the vzw stock rom.
I am switching from a Motorola a854 (defective screen). I copied any programming settings from the a854 to xt862 that I could, even if they weren't necessary(IMSI, country code, etc). I did an APN Backup and Restore from my old device to the new one, and also tried an APN Backup found online supposedly for Alltel devices.
Sorry for the noob post but I've searched multiple forums in an attempt to get any resolution to this issue and wanted to avoid creating my own thread.
Any assistance would be appreciated, I do not foresee any world traveling in my future so standard CDMA connectivity is all I'm looking for.
Thanks in advance and sorry for long post, tried to be brief while remaining thorough.
huhu, if the apn restore worked u maybe just need to tick the checkbox
to activate the apn
settings->wireless & networks->mobile networks->access point names
if there is no entry u have to add the APN manually

Thanks for assistance, but I'm with Alltel (CDMA) and this device only allows selecting APNs in GSM Settings. When I Change Network Mode from CDMA to GSM or Global it will then show no service alltogether. I'm still trying, I feel if I could get the proper APN then I would be ok but I'm not sure. Thanks

T-Mobile Moto X Connection issues.

I just got my new T-mobile Moto X yesterday, got it activated and it works great at home. But often when I am out and about it will say I have 4g (HSPA+), but the internet will not be working. I was curious if maybe I just have bad APN settings? Any suggestions would be great! Thanks!
Edit: Does unlocking the bootloader invalidate my motocare package? I've tried looking a bit and I'd like to unlock it, but not if it renders motocare useless.

Well first thing first, Did you set up the APN settings? Even if it shows like it has internet you still have to select the correct APN.
Also obvious but... the Tmobile SIM still needs to be activated lol otherwise factory reset that mother... Give a thanks why don't ya

The T-mobile sim is activated, and I am just using the stock APN setup the phone came with. The phone seems to do pretty good, but it just shows a connection sometimes when it doesn't seem to have one. Do you have a link to some T-mobile APN setting for this phone?

I'm using tmobile as well sir. The default APN settings are fine. MY question is did you actually physically select the T-mobile US LTE APN setting. You HAVE TO CLICK ON IT even if the status bar shows you're connected. And if you still need the APN just google. APN settings are everywhere!
after thoughts: if you have a sim you cut your self, don't matter if you're a surgeon, you may run into issues.
also like I said consider a factory reset or clearing your cache settings.
