Hi all, please forgive my noobness...
Last night I loaded a stock FRF85B on to my N1 that also returned my recovery back to stock. I want to root this build or or load a pre-rooted ROM, but without a custom recovery, I'm dead in the water.
I found that Paul has posted a Superboot for FRF83, but no news for 85B. Does anyone know of any effective alternatives?
I imagine this could be helpful to anyone who recently loaded the stock update OTA and would like to finally try rooting.
Thanks in advance!

use the flash a recovery part of that video.
Then, find a thread that has a rooted FRF85B or a "rooter" for it.

I'm currently trying to get a completely clean orginal Froyo install on my phone. I tried to search here, but what I found doesn't fix my problems.
My Nexus One was on ERE27 when I got it (bought used). I unlocked and rooted it, flashed Amun's recovery 1.5.3 (later 1.7.0) and after trying Cyanogen 5.0.6 and installing the EPE54B radio I finally went to Enomther 1.8.1 and later 1.9.2.
Now I'm trying to get a completely stock Froyo on my phone.
I flashed an ERD79 stock image using the PASSIMG.zip method, figuring I'd then get the OTA update to FRF85B, maybe with an intermediary step via ERE27.
When I dial *#*#checkin#*#*, it just says "checkin succeeded", though, and doesn't provide an update.
Unfortunately, my original nandroid backup was lost in an sd-card screwup, so I can't go back to my original ERE27 system, either.
So I tried to update to ERE27 using the stock recovery and the update.zip from ERD79 to ERE27, but I only get the <!> sign and a green android, nothing like "apply update.zip" to choose. (I never used stock recovery, so I don't know how this is actually supposed to look like.)
I could do this using the custom recovery again, but with that I can't flash the original Froyo update. I couldn't find a stock recovery image for ERE27 anywhere, but the update ERD79->ERE27 contains stuff for the recovery partition, and I don't know how to get that updated correctly.
Any hints/links?
What puzzles me most is why I don't get OTA updates on stock ERD79. Any ideas on that?
Stock ERD79 stopped giving updates a couple of weeks before Froyo started.
Head over to Developers section, download stock FRF85B build for flashing on non-stock recoveries, from Lox's thread. Flash it and you're set.
Ah, ok, so that's why I don't get updates. Thanks.
Im running frf83 on my rooted nexus one, i have found a few versions of frf85b and frf91, flashing them comes up successful but when i restart, settings says im still at frf83.
Ive heard that you can now unlock without affecting the bootlocker, so am i getting the wrong files? If so can anyone point me in the right direction? (im not an advanced user but im not too bad)
Please help thanks
PS i tried to post links of the files i have but wasnt allowed. they were both from htcpedia. com.
I'm also looking for a usable+deodexed FRF83-FRF91 update.zip.
This is the official download but I cant apply it because of the custom recovery, and all the files have a ".p" suffix (patch files)
http://android.clients.google.com/packages/passion/signed-passion-FRF91-from-FRF83.4bf74f06.zip
If nobody responds I will go back to the stock recovery and try again.
I'm averaging 3 reboots/hangs a day on FRF83...
i have the same issue... i cant update from frf83 that is installed. i am getting OTA updates and nitifications but adter reboot its frf83 again, i too have a custom revovery and i dont know how to go back to stock
Any luck with solving this?
Have you tried this perhaps?

I simply backed up and did a clean kang-o-rama install
Hi all,
I have rooted n1 with FRF50 and spent this day trying to update it to FRF91.
First, the normal update doesn't work (because I have modified recovery mode probably, not sure) returning some errors with signatures.
So I tried to find a rooted update from FRF50 to FRF91. First I found FRF50 to FRF83 which worked well, but could not find any update from FRF83 to FRF91 (only FRF85B to FRF91, but no FRF83 to FRF85B).
Then, I found such update but it made my phone not work (ddms reported problems with a2sd and then some exception in sh).
I reverted it now to FRF50 and applied FRF50-FRF91 that I found. This update worked, but my Build Number according to Settings is still FRF50 so it probably did not apply.
*) the link where I found FRF50-FRF91 - http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/how-to-install-android-2-2-froyo-frf91-on-nexus-one/
Any help with direct or indirect updates between FRF50 and FRF91 on rooted phone? (I can get it to FRF83, but not beyond). Thanks
Just looking through the first page would answer you.

emm.. the thread you linked just points at another thread in General section that is supposed to list "all available update.zip" - can't find such thread there, but the one I did find lists updates till FRF83 (and that's what I described above).
What I'm asking for here is the update from FRF50 to FRF91 and I cannot find one.
I guess I should repeat word by word, and this time in caps:
YOU HAVE CUSTOM RECOVERY, NO GOOGLE UPDATE WILL WORK ON IT, YOU NEED CUSTOM UPDATE FOR CUSTOM RECOVERY, OR YOU NEED TO FLASH STOCK RECOVERY BACK.
And I guess the following thread was too hard to find, only on 4th page of General forum:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=712983
The rest of instructions are in the first linked thread, excuse me for not copy-pasting them.
Laziness is a sin
Well, you did not have to help me with the part on why I cannot use the stock update
I just needed help with rooted FRF50 -> FRF91 and the link you gave (the Update.zip to flash with custom recovery) works great!
Thanks for help and sorry for upsetting you all
Hi,
I've been searching the forums for this, but haven't found any real answer, so I thought I'd open a new thread .
I've successfully rooted my stock N1. However I'm wondering, with my newly acquired root rights, would it be possible to flash a custom kernel on it without needing to use a custom ROM.
The reason I'm asking this is that I would like to use iptables for use with a transparant proxy. It seems that the stock kernel does not support this
Of course if anyone has a different approach for the proxy, feel free to let me know as well .
Thanks!
I was able to flash just the cyanogen kernel onto my FRF91.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
instructions?
Ok that is great news... did you encounter problems afterwards with any of the core components? what about some instructions on how to do this (or a link )
Thanks!
I haven't seen any problems with the stock components on the phone.
I can't find the thread I got this from to save my life! I don't know where you are in the process so here's the entire list of what I did:
Unlocked the bootloader using the fastbooot oem unlock command.
Flash Amon-Ra recovery for N1.
Reboot straight into recovery, Back up Stock ROM.
Flash Modaco's superboot for FRF91 from recovery
Flash Cyanogen's N1 Addons (which contains the kernel).
If you google update-nexusone-FRF91-cm-addons-signed.zip you'll see a bunch of downloads for the kernel update. The MD5 sum on the file I have is: 7cf8074d3685681728043f367e6b35fd
It goes without saying, but backup your phone before flashing...
Thanks
I actually rooted without unlocking the bootloader, and would prefer to keep it that way since I get to keep my warranty
I'll try this today, thanks a lot!
Tried it, failed
No worries though, just 'upgraded' to CM6 RC2
Like the title says, I'm looking for some help. I've got my nexus rooted W/ Locked Boot on FRF83, and it's looking to update to FRF91, which of course fails because of my custom recovery. I'd like to get rid of notification for good by updating to a rooted stock FRF91. Is there stock+root FRF91 with instructions file that someone can link me too?
SO very much appreciated.
Bump, anyone?
Here's the sticky from the top of the Nexus 1 Developer's Forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=710842
Thanks but what i'm pretty much asking for is a FRF91STOCK+ROOT download that I can flash with the custom recovery!
I don't think what you ask is available right now...
Check out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=702191
it is probably the closest to stock
