I'm pretty sure this still requires root, but I would be interested on having this feature as part of my phone.

this guy has copied an FMradio lib file and bin file and installed a fmradio apk he found in an lg rom to his moto cliq and in turn enabled the fm radio that is part of the broadcom wireless chip. Does anyone know if all the htc phones have that same wireless chip with fm receiver/transmitter built in? Also I know we can load the apk's but it is the bin and lib files are blocked from write permission until we find root access?

I am not sure if ALL Htc phones have the capability, I do know that my Raphael, Tilt, Xperia have all had it.
This will be a possibilty, but sadly not until we get root.
We are getting closer to it though
it should have fm capability. the built in antenna might be an issue at getting far off stations but it should work.

I meant to say that the htc phones that share the same broadcom wireless chip, a/b/g and bluetooth probably all have the fm radio although I haven't been able to locate a bill of materials for the eris or hero. isuppli did one for the nexus but that has wireless n, most likely a different chip. I'm pretty sure my htc touch(cdma) does not have that, being it lacking the wifi connectivity.
Thanks for the reply. Good luck to everyone working on rooting. hopefully there will be some trick to loading a hacked recovery image off the sd card or something, even a nasty terminal command

But anyways...Our Devs are hard at work and I have to say this is the most impresive team of Devs I have seen together in awhile.
I will shoot out news and updates this weekend...
If you can find out what chip is in the phone, I can find out if it has FM or not. I'd need a model number, and preferably an FCC ID. Not sure how you would get those, though.

Slacker is pretty nice too. For music playing, I use TuneWiki.
Pandora and slacker are fine if you want to listen to music, but I need an actual FM radio receiver for the Eris for when I'm at the gym. They broadcast the sound from the TVs over the radio and although I get it no problem on my HD2, my girlfriend cant find any apps for her Eris.

so no one can tell me what chip the eris uses for wireless b/g and bluetooth or whether that chip contains the fm receiver or transmitter but you say it doesn't support fm... we all know it does not support fm. Just like rooting, it's a hack.
I took a look at your pictures and popped my phone apart as well, I couldn't make out the broadcomm chip that i was looking for but I didn't dig too deep in fear of something not working when I reassembled.
There doesn't seem to be much word on the Motorola cliq as well so not sure where the lg fm hack faded into.
So I found the FM radio.apk and lib files to run it, it doesn't get along well with the HTC device, the debugger has it looking for a bunch of motorola things. I was not able to run the test the other forms had as I was missing a file from the bin directory.

no... like really, I looked up the chipsets, they cannot be hacked with simple lib files and a apk. you would need to at least change out a crystal oscillator, and even then, that's just a theory. (a dangerous, brick your phone in 8 ways to sunday theory)
any idea which chip is in there? I figured even if HTC used the fm enabled chip they would not connect the audio out or fm antennae. it would be a cool trick. especially fm out.

if i remember correctly one of the devs told me that the eris CANNOT have fm, not even with a hack or anything. maybe if you solder your own fm chip, the maybe, but until then, i really dont believe it is possible.
By far, hands down, without peer or exception, the absolute best in Radio for the Android is RadioTime v2.1 (current version)
Over 30,000 stations, world-wide, every kind of format you can name. Even the station where my son is a DJ in Texas is broadcast. I can listen to my hometown Boston radio stations that I haven't been able to listen to in years. Lots of Podcasts, too. And I can listen to NPR Car Talk anytime I want. woo-hoo!

The Snapdragon chip has FM in it.
But the Liquid doesn't have FM, dunno if it's disabled or took out (hardware)
So what I read is not a fantasy, I hope someone develops a utility that allows us to use it!
I think its the bluetooth chip that have FM receiver, not the CPU.

If Bluetooth chip is same then Liquid should have radio and since F1 has radio and F1 and Liquid hardware are pretty much the same, I think there is big possibility Liquid to have radio, which is disabled.
Also I have seen in a dump from HTC Espresso a radio application.

bluetooth might be because android just started supporting bt 2.1 in eclair (who knows if updating the radio will make it work in 2.1 instead of 2.0)... fm radio who knows...

It occurs to me that we are experiencing growth Andorid day to day, who knows if in a not too distant future we will also see an application that runs the FM receiver
Exactly, giving the limited resources Acer has to making Android phones (probably just ramping up), they decided to skip on developing software drivers for the FM radio since they figured most people will use 3G streaming. but I like FM radio since it uses way less power and for those who don't have a data plan to burn through. Hopefully someone is able to write software drivers for the FM radio.
Some notes on this subject:
1.Acer has little to nothing to do to get the FM working, it's broadcom who makes the bluetooth (and thus FM) driver. What Acer has to do is only a GUI, which isn't hard to do
2.Nexus One has the same chip (ok, not the same, but they share the same driver), and doesn't have FM enabled either, that makes me think their might be some problem somewhere. (but the previous posts stating that using FM on a recent smartphone is unusual seems like a good guess.)
3.I've seen linux FM drivers for BCM4325, in Samsung Galaxy ROM (It's the btld daemon)
The thing is that this driver is fully closed source and doesn't use the bluez stack (linux bluetooth stuff), that's perhaps the reason why Acer and Google decided not to use it.
Anyway these chips are used by N1, Samsung Galaxy (I7500), iPhone 3GS, HTC HD2, HTC Touch Pro2, well, all brand new shiny phones, so it's likely someone of these developers will get something at some point

There is no reason that any FM transmitter with a 3.5" jack connection (the vast majority of them) would not work on an HD2. Just don't get one of those that connect only via the IPOD dock connector.
So, it's not really an HD2-specific question. Better to post in a forum about accessories for all phones.
I haven't had great results myself, with any FM transmitter. It is hard to find a good frequency to transmit on. Then, if you find one, that works well in one place--as you drive around in the car, you might easily find that frequency doesn't work well any more--noise interference, etc. As you are driving, it could not be safe to fiddle around a lot with changing frequencies as you drive.
I haven't been happy with any I have tried.
Other opinions?

It is to broadcast any sound from any device with a 3.5 sound jack, through the car radio.
Most often they are used for playing music from your MP3 player (in this case the phone), through your car radio.
It would also work for any other sound though--phone calls, etc. (Only works in one direction, however, so if the phone is far from your mouth, may not be too great to use on phone calls, if you want the other party to hear you.)

I think its hard to recommend...I have a Belkin iTrip that I picked up at Wal-Mart when me and we took our kids to Disneyland this past June. It works flawlessly in my wifes Jetta (which is what we drove to California in) and the sound was actually much better than I could have ever expected.
...however, in my Grand Vitara...its almost completely unusable, when I can get a station to pick it up...its far below FM quality and I have to have the phone in a certain location and in a specific position just to acheive this.
I have been looking into either getting a bluetooth receiver to attach to the stock head unit...or replacing the head unit all together (I would prefer to keep the stock one though)
I think it has something to do with the power of the antenna on your stereo, which is going to vary with every vehicle.
I did find a little gadget that you simply plug into the antenna input on the back of the stereo and plug the antenna into this gadget...when you turn the gadget on...it basically makes every radio station pure static by shutting off the antenna (It was only like $10.00...and I think it would work if you wanted to go the transmitter way)
Use a speakerphone with FM transmitter
I use a motorola T505 and you can get them for around $50 or so.

I've searched repeatedly this sybject.Milestone has a chip with bluetooth fm radio and wi fi in it.But as far as i know milestone lacks the fm antena.
But the headphones can be used as fm antenna right?
I believe you could get it to work if you solder the traces from the wireless chip to the headphone antenna. It works on the Droid because they are already present, but the milestone is missing the required circuitry.

For me, personally ... after I got new toy, my Xperia will be just an FM radio .. an expensive FM radio ..;-)
I do not need Camera or GPS because my Xperia will be staying put on the table to listen to radio and receiving messages from Skype messenger (always connected to WIFI).
But I think someone can get other HTC FM radio Android application and use it in Xperia .. please someone get that for Xperia, thanks.

yea, in italy free wifi wasn't legal until 2011, wifi and 3g coverage is really poor, 3g dataplan are very expensive and not for rechargeable SIM (in italy we don't use subscriptions)
FM radio, is free, and works everywhere!
I think that FM APIs are still unavailable to 3rd party developers.
I dont know how is this dont for xperia but this is the way on htc desire... :

You have the FM Radio icon in row 4. Tap on it and listen to radio. Do not forget first to plug some headphones (any they do not have to be original) .

I agree - FM radio support is essential. Without it users who would like to listen to the FM radio still will be forced to switch to WinMo.
Not everyone has Wi-Fi access to use TuneIn Radio and not every FM station has streaming broadcasts.
Motorola CLIQ XT is Android smartphone which has FM radio and uses MSM7201. Maybe someone could port it's FM radio app to X1?
