Hey everyone,
Like most of us, I have contacts in lots of places, and I would be happier if I could have them in one place. Google Contacts I think is the most appropriate tool for syncing contacts (not just with phone / Gmail) but with other places too.
It is rather straightforward how to sync Google Contacts with a TD2, but I really hate that when it does sync, it puts contacts in as Lastname,Firstname.
I was suggested that I use Contacts Changer (a Marketplace available app), but because contacts sync with ActiveSync, it keeps re-syncing and putting them back to the Lastname,Firstname format.
Does anyone know a solution to this? Anyone know how to make it show up in the contacts list as Firstname,Lastname? Permanently??
(Note: I considered putting contacts in using only the 'First Name:' field, but then that has downsides too. Sorry if I'm being fussy now )
Mate...I had to edit my 200contacts one by one on Google Contacts...and write them like:
PHIL_JONES
ROBERT_MILES
...
That was the only way so that they would be properly shown in mu HTC D2...
Hope it helps...

hello, I'm switching from my beloved touch pro to the nexus one, but don't want to manually put all of my contacts to my new phone. is there a way for me to export all my contacts from windows myphone contacts to google and to the nexus. i tried just importing my contacts through my live account, but that only pulled the email contacts and not all of my phone contacts. I'll take forever to do it manually, and if I save them to my sim, I'll lose a lot of info. any help? I'm lost at this point.
I looked for a solution to this for a days. The best solution is http://www.spritesoftware.com/products/migrate/how-does-it-work- up to now.
thanks. looks like exactly what I was looking for. I'll give it a try and report back.
I found that installing Google Mobile App on my Touch Diamond2 synced all my contacts to my Google Account and therefore automatically appeared on my N1.

There's many ways of doing this....
If any of these apply you can try any of these...
First you can just import them using bluetooth I'm sure. You could just 'mark all' or select all your contacts in your phone book on your phone and just send them using bluetooth to the nexus.
You could also import them into Outlook express and save them as a file and import them into gmail under contacts in gmail.
Or you could set up an extra gmail account and sync your phone's contacts to that account using Google sync and then export those contacts as a file and import them back into your main gmail account or keep them there and use that account to sync with your nexus.
Sorry for making it sound confusing but I'm coming off a symbian S60 V5... I know there's many ways of doing this
I dropped my HTC Touch Diamond down a storm drain, so I'm replacing it with the HTC EVO. My phone synced a day or 2 before, so I have all of my contacts online with Microsoft My Phone. I see no "export" option anywhere on the page. Any help/suggestions for retrieving and importing into the new phone?
I think the easiest way is to set up your gmail account as an exchange account on your Windows Mobile phone and set it to sync mail and contacts.
http://www.google.com/support/mobile/bin/answer.py?answer=138636&topic=14299
Then once you set up your N1, your contacts will sync automatically. I love this feature from Google as much as any other. You will never lose your contacts again, no matter what happens to your phone. Also, you can edit and add contacts in your gmail account online and they automatically appear on your phone.
DejaOffice will sync your Nexus contacts to Outlook via USB without going through the google cloud.
Is there a solution for exporting contacts from myPhone? I have broken my TD2 and my TD1 so I can't use that to sync the contacts to the phone and export them. If I could I would probably sync all my old text messages as well.
I am embarking on an approx 30 min task of copying and pasting all my 400 contacts from MyPhone to excel then I can import them. At least I get to tidy up my contacts and remove any duplicates.

Hi,
If I add an entry on my HD7 it doesn't appear in my Google calendar. I manually sync as well as use the timed function but entries still won't go from the phone to Google calendar.
Whereas if I delete an entry on my phone, it gets deleted immediately from my Google calendar.
Has anyone got an idea how to get entries entered on the phone to appear in Google calendar?
Note: Windows Live is a dead loss with both contacts and calendar so Google might be my last chance of syncing Outlook & phone.
Cheers...

Are you using multiple calendars? WP7 doesn't support multiple google calendars, maybe its something to do with that?

Does that mean you can add, edit and delete entries without problems with your Windows Phone to Google Calendar?
I have been doing that since day one and so far it has always worked like a charm.
Check your settings going to Settings\email & accounts\Google and make sure you are synchronizing the Calendar.
What I really find odd is the fact that the entries are deleted but not added...
Anyway, I add and delete things to the calendar in my HTC HD7 and they reflect to Google as soon as I sync and vice versa. It works!
As a foonote, MS calendar also works flawlessly.

Thanks for you post... whilst I find MS Calendar works fine (if starting from scratch), it's the fact that existing entries in Outlook wont's sync. I've found that custom categories, complex repeat reminder and attached pictures do not sync correctly. As with MS Contacts, the photos attached to each contact doesn't sync. Where as with Google Contacts and Calendar do.
Don't get me wrong, I'm in no way a fan of Google, I want to have my phone sync with my PC like I have for the past umpteen years; I don't want my private data uploaded 'somewhere in the cloud' possibly in another country with different privacy laws and complete strangers having access to it. As my MS Calendar has crashed completely now after trying to import from Google Calendar, the reliability is far from what they can expect people to use as a 'standard'.
I'll try creating a gash Google calendar from scratch and see if that can have entries added from my phone.
Thanks again...

It seems that my new google mail account works fine with outlook being sync'd using companionlink 4. The only reason I can think my older gmail account didn't work correctly is that I tried to link it to my ms live account. The ms live account is still dead and I see no way of getting it going, but my phone is now registered under it and apps downloaded against it... hence I'm stuck with it. Major screw-up by Microsoft imho... let's hope they do the right thing with the next update.
Alternatively... HTC provide their own FREE outlook sync'ing software for Android... why not Windows Phone?
i want to transfer my contacts from phone to gmail account. But although it's 'sync on' @my O 2x, it syncs everything except the contacts. I'm using fr19. Any idea how to solve this?
thanks.
Sync on doesn't mean all options are, if you tap on the account you'll get a breakdown of what's available.
Yes, everything is checked. I even pressed the sync button. But still when i open gmail from PC, all my contacts aren't there. Only the starred contaacts. Is that what the star is all about?
EDIT: the only contacts that i have in PC's gmail are the ones i sent emails to. Other than that, no contacts are sync from phone to gmail.com
might be worth checking at http://www.google.com/contacts instead of GMail, but I shouldn't think it's any different.
Starred contacts are exactly that, contacts you've starred. Fire up the contacts list and tap a contact... top right will be a star.
or maybe because i'm using LG's gmail app? still can't sync to gmail contacts.

When you make a new phone contact it defaults to an LG PC Suite contact. These wont sync with your Gmail account.
You will need to recreate them and select your gmail acc instead of the above and then they will sync with gmail on the web etc.
Absolute pain in the backside I'm afraid but don't think there is another option
If you have to change them all into google contacts from lg suite contacts (if that's your problem) then I found using my phone explore (app and PC software) quite easy.
I exported all my contacts to a csv file and then converted them so google contacts could read them and then imported into google contacts.
Seems quite long winded but seemed quicker to me than copying each contact.

thanks.. i use the app u mentioned and i can sync with gmail contacts. But only problem is for every entry i have two details, one is from gmail contacts and the one is pc suite. So, i stop sync gmail contacts. But i upload all my LG contacts using myphonexplorer. At least now if i want to change to another android phone the contacts are still there.
Well if you have all your contacts in google then just use my phone explorer to delete them off the phone so you are left with just google contacts. Bit risky if you missed one but if you keep an original file with them all in.
This way if you update contacts then they will be auto saved and backed up with google incase something happens to your phone before you have chance to back up your contacts.
Is there any benefit of one method over another? I mean, besides the obvious that Gmail contacts can be sync directly with the phone? Maybe LG's version is same advantage over gmail's?
I just prefer google contacts as i know they are saved 'in the cloud' and if i ever change my phone i know they will work (as ill be sticking with android). Also, if my phone dies on me i know they will have been backed up almost instantly after i updated/changed a contact.
Also I can access my contacts from anywhere if i havent got my phone with me or my phone has run out of battery life. But that is completely personal opinions.
I am considering buying Galaxy Note, but there is one issue I haven't been able to clear so far:
How compatible are the GN calendar (s-planner), memo (s-memo) and contacts with Outlook and Google calendar? Can I synchronize between GN and Outlook calendar and contacts? Are the s-memo notes transferred to PC and if so, can they be exported to any other format (Outlook memo? MS Onenote? Evernote? ASCII text? Graphics?)
I have already had Palm PDAs (with the Palm Desktop on PC), then WinMobile devices (with Outlook) and got quite used to the comfort of being able to view and edit contacts, schedules and memos on both PC and the mobile device. If GN doesn't allow this, this would be a serious downside for me.
Everything is synced with Google. If your Outlook syncs with google then it shouldnt be a problem with the calander and contacts. You can add s-memos to calander events, but if you dont do that, then you have to manually sync s-memo things to Google Docs. But other than that its completely autonomous. There are also a lot of apps that do what you want. I would recommend buying a Note.
syncs fine with hotmail, exchange, google and facebook.
I initially had an odd scenario where hotmail gained some facebook calendar events (birthdays) but that seems to have resolved itself.
Thank you for the answer.
It has been written somewhere that the latest version of S-Memo can also synchronize with Evernote. Can anyone confirm that? And if so, does it just send the content as an image or does it retain some more formatting (text? www links? etc.)

sync works with evernote but it send the notes as images.
I am a sync-o-phile (oo-er, sounds a bit rude), always have been.
I now have my calendar and contacts synced with Google & Outlook using and App called Sync2 from www.sync2.com. It seems to work fine, although can fail when outlook is closed and it is still alive (I close Outlook to sleep my PC or Outlook can crash). I sync it and several other web calendars at the same time.
I also have my Outlook to do list sync to ToodleDo, and then to Due Today both on my PC and my phone. It uses Outlook categories as Project names, which is neat. I have not tried linking with the Notes To Do list as this seems peculiar to the Note, and I want a more general solution.
I like that Google/Samsung now seems to carry over Outlook categories for contacts in the Note. That means I can use them properly.
I use Evernote to sync all my notes as it is far more powerful than the Google notes thing, and more generic. I also love the ability to open a file, edit it, and save again, and it updates the note.
I use Basecamp on my PC, phone, and the web for managing projects and collaborating with customers.
For files I use SugarSync, and it syncs with up to 3 devices, up to 2GB for free, and I typically just ignore it an expect my files to be wherever I am.
Odd thing is that I have noticed several contacts getting images from other sources I never asked to look up. I presume Facebook. This is bloody annoying. Does anyone know how to stop it?

This is quite possible. I have also noticed the same behaviour on my WinMobile phone (HTC Touch Pro2), so it is not directly an Android related issue. And yes, the images for my contacts that appeared suddenly without my consent, are the same as their Facebook profile images.
Got a Note!
You've managed to give me the information I needed and finally I bought a Note!
So far I have been able to confirm:
Synchronizing Smemo with Google Docs - works great, text remains text, while images are embeded in the document
Exporting contacts from Outlook to KIES worked "sort of", while exporting to Gmail and back to Note worked great. I have managed to retain all the information and even code page (I used ASCII, not Unicode) worked as expected.
Exporting calendar from Outlook to Gmail and back to Note worked almost perfectly (apart from some inconsistencies which were due to duplicate entries in Outlook)
As for contact photos, it seems that only those which originate from Facebook are added to contact data.

I got all my contact photos from way back, and those must have come through from Outlook -> Google -> Note as Outlook is the only constant source since I was first able to do this (with my Sony Clie)
Perhaps in my case Outlook photos would also have been added through Google, but I exported/imported them via a .csv file, which didn't retain photos, only text data.
My outlook contact photos sync perfectly.

The simple question would be: what's the best way to sync all my GMail and phone contacts and have them be accessable through both platforms? How do you organize your contacts?
The more detailed explanation is as follows:
I use GMail a lot and have many contacts saved on my gmail.
I also have roughly 400 contacts (phone numbers only) saved on my HTC One.
What's the best way for me to sync the two? Some of the GMail contacts are also contacts on my phone.
I tried playing around with the sync options but ended up transfering ALL past e-mailed contacts to my phone. For example, I've e-mailed college professors 5 years ago one time about class and somehow their e-mails were synced to my phone as new contacts. It was a mess to clean that all up. And how would I prevent future e-mailed contacts from being saved to my phone?
At the moment the phonebook on my HTC One is set to only display contacts from my phone itself (so I don't see the contacts from GMail).
Move all your contacts to Google: https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/?tab=Cm#contacts
That way it will backup your contacts as well as sync them to any device with your Google account.
Personally I have my phonebook set to only show Google so I only see these contacts.
additionally, do all your contacts cleanup in your pc browser on your Gmail account
