does anyone know where this is located...i searched the forums and couldn't find anything, then i search my phone using tdcmp still nada. the reason i'm looking for it is i would like to add an mp3 clip to the folder so when i select the alarm i can hear the mp3 instead of the few options listed.
Firstly, all system sound files are located in the Device/Windows directory. Alarms can only be wav files unless you use a 3rd party app like wolfclock (freeware) or something similar.
You can use MP3's as ringtones only as far as I know. You can try dropping an MP3 clip in the Windows directory and let us know if it works.
Hope this helps.
When I add a .wav file to my windows directory, I can not see it in the phone options to use it as ringtone.
Can anybody tell me how to add this wav as a ringtone?
Thanx RObert
Convert to mp3 or wma.
I just found out that if you put a .wav file in the windows/ring folder, you can select the files.
or, better (in my opinion) into the internal storage/my documents. they are much easier to find/replace (opening windows directory takes a long time and finding something there is a pain in the a..s.). also, this way after a hard reset or flashing a new ROM you will not have to copy them again and as a bonus you'll have more memory in the "device".
I know sprint has banned certain sites so that users cannot download free ringtones and stuff, but up until I flashed roms I was still able to download and play them.
When I first got my hero It was running fresh rom. I could still download/play ringers from myxer. Then flashed to icerom, and nothing. Now using cm6, and nothing.
When i download the music tones now they show up as a .dm filetype and when i try clicking on them it says my device does not support that file type.
anyone else know of a fix or way around it?
From the HTC support site, I found that the following audio codecs are supported by the HTC Hero: MP3, MIDI, AAC-LC, AAC+, AMR-NB, SBC. Google or Wikipedia could probably tell you all the supported file extensions in those codec forms (I don't know them all off the top of my head).
I searched for the .dm extension and it says it's a Sony Ericsson file format for ringtones on their devices only. Sounds like its proprietary and probably unplayable on anything else, so you might just be out of luck on any of those.
You may could try taking your .dm files and converting them to a supported format/file extension? But I read that the .dm format is protected so this may not work. I can recommend a couple good audio encoder programs -- PM me if you'd like.
Try changing the file from .dm to .mp3 and see if it works. I ran across this on the xingtone site with my old phone.
You can side load ringtones on the Hero, just download the ringtone and put it a folder /.../Media/Audio/Notifications/ and they will show up in the ringtone list on the phone.
I'm hoping someone can help me out here.
I am attempting to use custom tones for my lock and unlock sounds. However, I think I'm having a problem with converting my sound files. What's happening is my .wav file that I convert to .ogg isn't recognized by my phone.
I am renaming the file to "Unlock.ogg" and moving it to /system/media/audio/ui
Just to rule out the possibility of copying the file I was able to copy an .ogg file from my phone, in this case the rooster alarm and get it to work. Is there anything special I need to do when converting the sound file from .wav to .ogg?
Pull one of the .oog files from the phone to your computer and see what the bitrate, etc is on it. Then convert your .wav to match...No Spaces in the filename? Just a couple quick ideas. I haven't tried changing the sounds (I have them muted), those are just a couple common issues with replacing other sounds I have run into.
Just a heads up for anyone else new to WP7. You can add custom ringtones to your HD2 WP7 using Chevron Custom Ringtone Manager.
Your phone has to be Chevron unlocked for this to work. Also, your mp3s need to be converted to WMA 48KHz format. This can be done easily with Microsoft Expression Encoder 4.
I've shown here how to convert using this tool:
Once converted, you'll find the WMA file in C:\Users\xxx\Documents\Expression\Expression Encoder\Output. Now run the Chevron Ringtone manager, browse to your WMA file, and click Build Ringtone XAP.
Then install the XAP the same way as you do with any other. I recommend Tom XAP Installer.
For alarms and alerts, there's an two extra steps involved. You must rename your WMA file to Alert-01.WMA (or which ever one you want to replace). Note your original one will be overwritten.
Once you have copied it to your phone, you need to install TouchExplorer. use this to move your Alert-01.WMA file from My Documents/My Ringtones into /Windows.
------------------------------------------------
An alternative is to sync your music with Zune, and then use TouchExplorer to copy one of your MP3s from My Documents/Zune/Content/xxx folder and put it into your My Ringtones folder. This works too
I've tested both methods and they both work great.
If you have any problems with it, just ask and I'll try to help.
Its also possible to copy mp3 files to My ringtones folder, I checked it by copying a random mp3 file from zune folder =)
I wonder if you can add extra alert or alarm files by just using higher numbers instead replacing the files? Didnt try this yet because it takes ages to load the windows folder...
Why the hell did MS use the folder to store all the files without any sub folders =S
Does the mp3 work as a ringtone? I didn't think this worked.
yep using it without a problem =)

It's tricky if you dont know where to look.
Using Touch Epxplorer, browse to My Documents > Zune > Content > 0100
The files will have different filenames. Just find the one you want as a ringtone by playing it (double tapping it). THen rename it and copy it to the My Ringtones folder

Thanks for the fast reply
That is the problem, all the files is numbered with no original names.
Is there a way to go around this ?

Unfortunately not...that's just the way that Zune transfers files when you sync...it does this with all files.

I had this problem too.
You can just delete the ringtone from the ringtone folder using Touchxplorer. (My Documents\My Ringtones)
When using Microsoft Expression Encoder 4, do not select WMA Professional. I did this in error and although the ringtones sounded good on the computer, the phone played them horribly.
Select WMA, then 48kHz.
If you select WMA and 48kHz is not an option, convert to WMA Professional at 48kHz, then import the new file and convert to WMA at 48kHz. Worked like a charm for me!
YES YOU CAN USE MP3 FILES AS RINGTONES BUT IF YOU WANT TO ADD ALERTS OR ALARMS YOU HAVE TO CONVERT THESE TO WMA FILES & RENAME THEM TO Alert-01 or alarm-01 in windows folder.

There's no need for the CAPS. And I also already explained this in the first post.
Anyone know where alerts are found (ie SMS/email alerts) would be good to change these too, I assume it would work using the same method (TouchXplorer)
I did the alternative method of syncing with ZUNE and did exactly what was said on the post and i was able to do it BUT when i set it for my ringtone it does not want to play.? I tried several songs from ZUNE(All i can listen to) and have the same problem. I can hear them before i do the method but after that there is no sound when i select it for my ringtone. I do have everything installed as the post says. Is there anything I'm doing wrong?? Any help please!!!
