I am not sure if this was posted anywhere or has been talked about so i figured i would start a new thread. I have alot of free time on my hands and i think its great how everyone is making/customizing rom's. I would like to start learning how to do it myself. I was wondering if there is a good way to start learning, or a good place i can go get tutorials or something like that? Thanks

there is a section here on xda for it as well

I see folks posting their snazzy ROM's (awesome work, guys) and I see that in some other forums (Blue Angel most notably) there are "Rom Kitchens" posted for those devices, but I don't see anything similar for the Wizard. Clearly there are methods--the plethora of ROMS here proves that--but how would I go about starting to build my own? I've done a lot of custom installation/OS configuration stuff with Win2k/XP/2003 and countless apps (I'm a regular at www.msfn.org and have used tools like nLite and WPI extensively in my own labors for both work and pleasure) with great success, so I'm really interested in expanding my horizons to this neck of the woods as well.
I hope that someone could forgive the "n00bness" of my question here, I'd love to be more active in contributing around here, you guys are inspiring me to help, dammit!
Thanks!
Jason
If there isn't one, can someone at least please point me in the right direction? I've done what searching I can, but without really knowing the proper terminology it's difficult to find the right answers
Thanks!
Jason
Uh, is it secret or something? I'd really love to help out making some ROMS around here and tend to have plenty of time to do it while at work, is anyone willing to share the info?

Yeah but I don't think there is a ROM Kitchen out yet for the Wizard. Bepe doesn't have one to test with.

awesome, finally some headway .
Thanks for the pointers, I'll see what I can learn over there

I apologize in advance if this is in the wrong section, mods please move or delete if necessary...
My question is - Where is the best place to dig up resources and info on learning how to work with the Android OS?? Such as creating Kernels and ROMS?? Even Themes? I have looked online and I found one course of instruction for Android - buts its quite expensive... Is there a cheap or free alternative?
anyone? Would really like to start making ROMs and kernels... just need some guidance...
This thread might be a good starting point.

Thankyou!! That is a great start, i was wondering if anyone was gonna reply Greatly appreciated Sir!
I was Thinking about making a website that included all ROM/KERNELS/MODS/MODEMS/THEMES/BOOT-ANIM....
but to have it set up to multiple phones, the ultimate android bible. it would have a different section for each phone. and each ROM etc. would show the original post from the OP from xda, and then if they like it, they can click the link to go back to xda and download
i know i would already be able to do it for the vibrant (my phone)
but i was just curious if anybody else would be interested in doing this for the captivate..
it would have to be updated EVERYDAY, just like my VIBRANT BIBLE seen here
check it out, and if you think you can update daily with everything like i do, pm me and let me know. ( you dont have to organize it, i will have the website already organized and ready to go, all you have to do is post the ROMs etc. on it
EDIT: i am not advertising another website. i will not be drawing xda members away from xda, it will be just like a shortcut website leading to xda
There is already a site like this, its called XDA?
Lol hardcore

Not exactly.. xda you have to search for things.. a bible you don't... my vibrant bible makes it alot easier for people to find things.. searching in xda can take forever to find something you want

I suppose you have a point, but that seems like A LOT of work on your end updating it everyday for all the phones just to make it slightly easier for lazier people. I mean if you want to make your phone super awesome but don't want to do a little searching and research do you really deserve it??
I am completely self taught from reading xda, and I can do anything short of actual dev work, and I like that.
Not flaming at all, just kind of expressing an opinion.

well my main intension of making it IS to make it easier, but i wasnt planning on updating ALL the phones, i was going to try to find other people for different phones, so it wont make it any harder on me, i would just have to update the vibrant section (like im already doing, with my bible)... i expect very little income from it too, and all of it would be given to the people who are updating their phone sections
Starting from the day I rooted my phone, I have grown a deep interest on how this wonderful os works. I want to dive deeper and learn how to tweak my phone or cook my own roms.
If there are any good souls out there willing to part with even just a small amount of their time to teach me intermediate or more advanced skills, I would greatly appreciate it.
I am a great learner...I want to be a great dev someday...will you help me?
Thanks

If you find one, then I would love to get in on that too.

Hello!
May its sounds strange, but any idea where to start learn these things? I reading XDA, which is great, but there is any documentation or other website, which can help in this case?
Worked already with linux, yesterday compiled my first kernel. But interested in adding new mods and other sweets to my kernel.
Please dont say those noobies answers "If you dont know these, you shouldn't probably go into it.."
Everybody started somewhere, i just need to learn, thats all. But cant find noone, who can give me the basics.
Thanks for suggestions, etc.
Sincerely, Marcell

im not sure of the guides that helped me at the moment, but i personally googled it and found stuff. then i looked at other devs githubs, and started my own, then started cherry-picking and attempted numerous times to build the kernel. but id just google for guides on how to build android kernel for whatever phone you have (I'm going to guess it's the nexus 6). that should be a good starting point for you. sorry i couldn't exactly help more.

Chef central covers all kinds of development. Just need to invest the time to research and learn. There's no easy or quick answers that are going to help.

Well, you can start with the basics, or jump right into it compiling from scratch. Though many of those tools are designed to help compile and build. You should be reading about each one. But what I'm trying to get across, is that there are multiple guides and tutorials for doing this, many of which are in the Chef Central Android section. Did you read through anything in the section I linked?
Or you can search XDA on "kernel building". Or search google on "kernel building" and add on "XDA" in your search for more XDA results.
Otherwise, I'm not sure the point of this thread? No one is going to walk you through it from beginning to end here in this thread, when there are multiple, and very long guides already out there that took people hours to create.
If you are going to get into this, you'll be researching and reading for many hours before you start a thing. And you'll need patience and have to be ready to do lots and lots of homework. :good:
Good luck and let us know how it goes.
I already built kernel some days ago, even yesterday. I would interested about customization, adding more features, but still there is nothing about it. Because what you linked is for building ROMs and NOT kernels. You know they are totally different. Even tried to search in Google, only found about adding grovenors, but nothing else.

Sir, there are kernel guides in Chef Central. (and some are withing the complete rom guides. Or at least have links to kernel resources) But, if they don't suit your needs, again, I would search XDA on "kernel building". There are many guides throughout the site that I find when I do that.
Pick one that you like and that is active with questions and answers in them, and perhaps try asking in one of those. That's where you'll find the experts.
:good:
Edit: Hopefully this link will work, http://forum.xda-developers.com/sitesearch.php?q=Kernel building
That will lead you to lots of information.
