Coming from a long user of iPhones, i find open source, amazing!
But here comes the next question, i'm running Serendipity 5.7, but my question is can I overclock with this ROM? But even before that, can someone give details on what "Overclocking" is? And what is the Pro/Cons of it?
Thanks!
im sorry, but if you dont know what overclocking is, then you dont need to do it.....overclocking is based on abilities in the kernel and your phone, *NOT* the rom
perhaps you need to do a little more reading about it first. all the info you need is already typed up and ready for you to read it....no need to make someone re-type it all because you dont want to research it.
Welcome to the android world.
Read the kernel threads.
Use google.
Yea I agree work the other posters. Overclocking is something that can actually damage any hardware. I have done my fair share of pc overclocking but works not mess around with it on my phone.for me the benefits are minor and mainly epen0r centered.
I would recommend a fair amount of research with at least captivate if not captivate and pc centered focus

WOW what a amazing couple of douche bags, here is a guy that wants no more than a bit of simple info and all you can do is give smart ass answers like read the threads. This should be a great forum but guys like you can't be a bit more kind to new guys. Great Job I'm surprised anyone comes to this forum with guys like you.
Reading is essential. XDA is a fantastic forum that will help you with your problems with an electronic smile, but you will avoid many annoyed users by simply using google. We were all new once, even though some of us may forget that, so we understand your curiosity about the captivate because it is a great phone. But like I said, almost every problem us on the web somewhere.
P.s. Welcome to XDA!

Thanks, I just want to make sure I know exactly what I am doing before I do it. Yeah you can google the stuff (and I did), but I wanted specifics, and people's opinions of if it is worth it or not. Thanks for your support!

Like I said above it is good to know there are a few people willing to help out new users (like myself). I did do some googling and know the basics of overclocking, but like stated before, I want opinions and details. Hopefully more helpful people like you two will come along!
P.S. People are contradicting and ignorant. I'm sure they were asking the same questions when they were introduced to overclocking and other new ideas. Ha, we all know karma is a ... and it will give people what they deserve!
EDIT: Also for all of you who say I should google before posting, maybe if you read my question correctly, I asked for details, not a general idea on it.

not here, dude. i read. and read A LOT. there wasnt much need to ask questions that there were already answers for, and easily available to me.
FWIW: i am not trying to be mean....but all the info is already out there...and plenty of topics already covering this EXACT subject
Well from what i understand, overclocking is dependent upon the kernel you are running. But also the processor in the phone. What overclocking essentially does is make the CPU speeds a bit faster. Say for example, the captivate is clocked at 1ghz processor speed, if you were to overclock it you could increase speed by 20% or even 40% on our phone. You just need to find the right kernel. However, this may damage your phone, and can take a hard hit on your battery. You can play around with it and experience it for yourself. And welcome to XDA btw

Yeah fine maybe I should have done a little more research, but to be honest, I did do researching and I do know the general idea on overclocking. I will give you that. But maybe it may sound ignorant, but I don't feel like reading X amount of threads and posts to learn the same thing over and over again when I want specifics.
Sorry if that sounds not professional, but I'm sure many will agree with me that they don't have enough time to go through all these posts. My bad.

Thank you. Finally someone who actually responded to the question!
Just a question though to make sure (since I have read different answers), are there apps to overclock? Or does each kernel need it's own way of overclocking?

Umm i think you can use an app called SetCPU which is on the market for $2.00

I wasnt trying to be rude but really, reading is essential. Check out one of the oc kernel threads and you need to read it. If you cannot spend the time to do at least that, then I promise you will get frustrated. Questions that are as vague as your op will not get you the answers you are looking for.
And as far as being a douche, I spend a lot of time helping people, both here and in irc channels, but people really need to show some initiative by asking specific questions that demonstrate some research has been done.
Edit....don't use setcpu. Use the voltage control app that is specifically designed for use with the kernels. This can normally be found in the kernel thread op.

And I am looking right now in the Kernel Threads. I will have to find some time to do this. But thanks for your help!

Dont worry about people getting irritated with you, everyone on here gets mad sometimes, when I first joined, I asked LOTS of vague questions, tried to help people even though I knew nothing, and flipped out after my phone got soft bricked. The three most worst things a new person on XDA could do LOL. As long as you dont do those things or things like this, people (usually)won't toss insults your way, but sometimes people are just in a bad mood.
EDIT: The results of overclocking are debatable. Some people will swear by it while others will swear against. By making your processing system go faster than it should, you increase the chance of it burning out. Personally, I have tried overclocking and you really can't see the difference unless you have the scores side by side, but I did notice a difference with lagfix, which is much safer. If you want to overclock, get a compatable kernel, and the apps: voltage control and setCPU. Voltage control helps you overclock and undervolt (essential to OCing if you want your battery to last) and setCPU helps you control where you want your top top speed to be. But beware, because the faster and longer the overclocking, the more problems arise. I suggest trying it out, if you like it, great! If not, read up on lagfixes, and try those out.

Before i start let me say i have spent many hours trying to figure this out!
Tried many method to many to write down! but no joy!
i bought a galaxy tab p1000 th other day! it was on 02 so i rooted it and unlocked it! there was no problem there!
but after i hard reset my tab the market reverted back to the old version 1.82
not only this but app i paid for in the past didnt show up on "my apps"
The apps on the market were very limited no "z4root, snesoid, DVR," Just apps that say things like "rc1". weird!!!
i update the apk myself to 2.3.7 (root explorer) which gave me the new looking market but nothing changed with "my apps" and still limited apps on market!
When i got it it was android market 2.xx and worked fine.
Tried
-settings-applications-uninstall updates (and all other caches and probably fixes i found on xda)
google framework, talk, market updater, so on!! trust me everything......
-many hard resets
-unrooting/rerooting
This has stock firmware no flashing as of yet!!
Please Can you help!
For someone who has spent many hours trying to figure this out, you could've also spent some time to figure out the correct section to post in
After you figure out where this post really belongs (or when the Mods move it) try searching by name in the Market for the apps you bought. They should appear in the result and it should say "Purchased" if your main Gmail account is the same one you used for the purchase. If you then click on "Purchased" you should be able to install them
Works for me if and when my paid apps don't automatically load.
For some reason I've only had this problem on my Galaxy Tab but never on my HTC Legend where the apps always load automatically.
Also keep in mind that not all apps can be used on multiple devices even if you've paid for them

Even in the real world we need to abide by the rule bro. The mods and devs here in xda are most helpful. We just need to know how and where to post. They may have overdone it in pointing out you posted in the wrong section, but admittingly it's really annoying if it takes you 5 minutes browsing through the pages because of too much unnecessary thread in the wrong forum. Its best if you just say "thank you for pointing it out".

Cryptic answers actually serve a purpose. Rather than spoon feeding the same information over and over to different people, it encourages them to go do their own research. Usually the 'cryptic' answer contains the keywords necessary for somebody to do a search for themselves.
I find it more effective to piece together information that i've found myself than to have it explained in a way that doesn't always make sense to me. It's the difference between being in Primary school and University. In the latter you're expected to do your own work.

In a sense, I do agree with you on that. Like I said, most of the people are very helpful with their answers. Perhaps cryptic was the wrong word. Terse would have been a better choice of word. The problem for me being a noob to Android is that there is so much misinformation around that to find what you are actually looking for, you have to sift through so much crap first. This could be avoidable if people didn't just give the stock answer "search for it".
Sorry, I'm just a pedantic fool. I don't want to be spoon fed, but I do want a relevant quality answer. I'm no genius, but when I answer a post, I try to be as helpful & unambiguous as possible. I just expect the same.

On one hand I agree with the op that sometimes people can give very vague and condescending answers which can be frustrating for a new user or someone with an issue they need to address asap.
Its never a good thing to dismiss someone as a stupid n00b and not try to help them out.
On the other hand, I think it is beneficial to give someone a push in the right direction and not just spoonfeed them an answer.
When I first came to XDA I knew NOTHING, it was only through being encouraged to read and research my problems that I got to the point where I was able to help others with theirs.
There is also the argument that as this is a development site and not just a one stop shop for answers to questions which Google can answer for you 95% of the time, if you are not able/willing to search and learn then your in the wrong place.

What I did when I joined this forum (and before) was too not only use the search feature but search other sites, Google it, also I checked other forums and blogs. Articles from Lifehacker, the unlockr, other tech blogs...and you know what, it DID take what seemed like forever to get the SDK set up, find the right drivers ect. But you know what DIDN'T HAPPEN, I didn't get one terse or rude answer, I didn't get flamed and I learned alot more in the process. I can root phones and flash ROMs with complete confidence now. I'm not saying my way is the right way but when I did/do ask questions I get a much better response because I've got some knowledge under my belt.

I agree somewhat to the OP, as I was a n00b once too. It was frustrating figuring out issues on my own and reading threads for hours. But I lurked for months when I first started modding seems and setting up QPST and stuff when I first started "hacking" my old motorolas. I eventually got a grasp on things and have been trying to help out where I can.
I can honestly see how old timers and those experienced in all different forms of modding these devices can get terse and not want to just spoon feed the info to the new users. The new users need to learn how to search, follow instructions and get well read on the fundamentals before assaulting the developers with questions answered earlier in threads or in the wiki.
It's a two way street, but I can assure you that it is worth the journey. You can't just take offense when someone when someone doesn't answer directly or refers you to the search function is short answered. And devs/experienced users aren't trying to offend you. Every person here just needs to get along!

Don't take this the wrong way, but creating a website for the Thunderbolt right now is like showing up late to a party with a 12 pack of Bud Light. Everyone will be happy you came, but you didn't bring anything that wasn't already there. Now, if you show up with a bottle of Single Barrel Jack Daniel's, you will be the shiznit at the party. To be honest, I love this idea. It's kind of hard to find updated roms and mods for any phone, not to mention the Thunderbolt. BeardedMan... Why is making a website like this, which will (hopefully) be a good hub for Thunderbolt mods and roms, getting "late to the party?" Is there another website out there like this, besides the android forms or Rom Manager? If there is, I'd like to know.
frankzua77, I would like to say thank you. If this website becomes what I think it will, it will make modding the Thunderbolt so much easier. If you need any help, just let me know.
I think the problem beardedman is referencing is the fact that there are a lot of android websites/forums already (even thunderbolt specific) and that there are a lot of much newer phones getting the attention. I have yet to not find anything I'm looking for without a 10 second search on Google. And the Thunderbolt is real close to being yesterday's superphone, if it's not already.
Plus, the problem with any of these sites is someone has to maintain it...which means sifting through posts, updating daily, etc. Unless it's a wiki that anyone can update, it's the same reason that the stickies all get outdated. Heck, it's the same reason I've started threads on many forums for many topics trying to compile information and eventually given up.
Now that I've rained on the parade and come off as a prick, I do applaud the effort...even if it doesn't stay updated or become the hub you imagine, at least you have an idea and a passion and are trying to do something about it. Don't lose that. And who knows...maybe it's just what the community needs

Not knocking this idea at all, but should really consider opening it up to a wiki format and not center only on the thunderbolt.
!
I really appreciate everyone that makes their point, I am currently working on the page. One of my goals is to have videos that can show you a ROM even before you consider downloading it. I know we are focusing on the tbolt, who knows maybe later on this expands to having other phones and stuff...
I need your help on deciding on a domain name! Right now im using a free domain service but I would like to purchase a domain, any ideas???
Also please click on the ads on the bottom as this is how the site will be funded for right now.

I've read over the last few days multiple posts coming from more than one person that go like ~"I know what you're taking about, I'm a developer too", "dude I'm not a noob I'm a developer too", "I'm better than you, I can develop my custom ROM", and so on.
Truth is...
You're probably not a developer.
Using dsixda's kitchen, UOT kitchen and winzip (and maybe apktools) does not make you a developer.
Following tutorials and copying/pasting smali code does not make you a developer.
You're an interested user, maybe even a themer, but don't be arrogant. Know the difference.
I'm not saying it's a bad thing. It's great that everyone is willing to learn, and these methods are a good place to start. But I say again: you're not a developer.
Call yourself an interested user, a ROM cook, a learning newbie, a themer if you're good at that, but not a developer.
Obviously, the same applies to me.

You may better specify the answer for
WHO THE DEVELOPER ACTUALLY IS ?

Well a developer includes in his work researching, designing, implementing, and testing software. A person who develops stand-alone software (that is more than just a simple program) and got involved with all phases of the development (design and code) is a software developer. On the other hand the one that only implements and does the copy paste of the code is called a programmer. I hope that i was specific and i made myself clear.
ok so we are not devs we know that so why make this thread?

Well said!! I too am seeing too much negativity and rudeness towards people who come here to learn.
They are new so might not understand the rules, yet, but they are here to learn so we should help them not tell them they are worthless noobs and dont deserve your help.
We all learn here and thats what makes XDA a good place to hang out.
No one on this forum is better than anyone else sore may be more advanced along the learning curve.
Hello! I am Dom, I am an interested user wanting to learn more about android. I can cut and paste and follow tutorials but I am not a developer.

Nobody here has anything against anyone. Yeah some outbursts are uncalled for. But that is rare. Must be some personal problems or somebody having a bad day. Senior members, contributors, developers etc all have gone through that phase. So dont be offended by anybody's rude behaviour. It wasnt , is and will not be anything personal against anyone. If he ir she has been rude to you....they will realize that later on.

I know that everyone here is human (i guess?) and may have a bad day, but the image that xda passes is that she's not welcoming anyone. It already starts with that noob video that makes me to go through a deep depression. Not complaining about xda, but being nice will bring more people, and sooner or later, more developers, making this community bigger and bigger.

Lol....No u took it all wrong brother. That video isnt about showing anyone down....i have seen it...rather its an informative one accrding to me.....it clearly tells you that "Noob" isnt welcome. Ofcourse....it good to be warned before you start.....newbie is a good thing....people who do not want to read and ask all silly questions when all of it is already mentioned in the OP or a few pages back....are termed as "noobs". When i joined XDA i didnt even had this phone with me....for 6 months what i did was to read and clarified doubts....used google....It has almost every answer to your question...believe . I am still not a developer, nor a themer nor a rom cook....i dont get to spend much time on pc.....even then this googling and reading has given me enough knowledge to clarify my doubts myself. XDA is not a human or animal.....its all of us together....that video was sarcastic and informative. Such videos dont depress you...its the people here on XDA who are responsible for your depression and happiness. And as far as i know...here people are quiet helpful....just a few "anger bursts" but that i believe is quiet fine and normal... We have people from all cultures and countries. Diffrences do tend to occur.
Where do u suggest to start to learn if I know these "basic" things and I'd like to be a developer of this phone?

This thread is still alive?
There are plenty of tutorials here and in the development section. You can also check the ROM cooking XDA forum.

Yeah, man, you're right. Because of your answer, i've realized that being a noob is not a bad thing. Everyone started as a noob. Act like one is the problem. Starting a new thread to ask if we got jelly bean means asking for a "anger burst". Exactly like you said, by having a Galaxy Ace I/C/M, we got a lot of countries, like Brazil (from me) and countries from Asia. So, thanks for your answer, and sorry for your trouble.
GermainZ what you explained in the first post isn't developing, it's programming.
Everyone can be a developer, as long as they're helping the project, even if its only reporting glitches, bugs etc, they're still developers.
Programming on the other hand requires some experience but isn't that difficult as you think it might be, Just look at python lol, pretty much anyone who knows english can write in that.
I think you might need do a little research before posting such ****ty threads.

This is out of context now.
If I remember correctly, when I posted this, there was some kind of flame war going on between ROM cooks/users (not sure what exactly it was about, or who was involved - it doesn't matter). This thread was mostly to show that while everybody appreciates the effort, they shouldn't act as if they are superior. You really should have been there to understand.
The whole OP is exaggerated for that (and FYI, since you mentioned it, I can code basic stuff in C++/Java, and more advanced stuff in Python, tho I prefer Python as it's neat, has one of the best documentations I've seen, and I can execute it directly from within my bash scripts without any extra steps).

He wasnt showing anyone down....but he was just clearing the air as there were quite a number of people who were calling themselves developers and were showing some superiority in their behaviour with newbies or even other members.....which in any point is not acceptable. Doesnt matter whether you are recognised developer, themer, elite member or moderator.....here every one is contributing in their own way and every one is in the same level.
