Coming from a long user of iPhones, i find open source, amazing!
But here comes the next question, i'm running Serendipity 5.7, but my question is can I overclock with this ROM? But even before that, can someone give details on what "Overclocking" is? And what is the Pro/Cons of it?
Thanks!
im sorry, but if you dont know what overclocking is, then you dont need to do it.....overclocking is based on abilities in the kernel and your phone, *NOT* the rom
perhaps you need to do a little more reading about it first. all the info you need is already typed up and ready for you to read it....no need to make someone re-type it all because you dont want to research it.
Welcome to the android world.
Read the kernel threads.
Use google.
Yea I agree work the other posters. Overclocking is something that can actually damage any hardware. I have done my fair share of pc overclocking but works not mess around with it on my phone.for me the benefits are minor and mainly epen0r centered.
I would recommend a fair amount of research with at least captivate if not captivate and pc centered focus

WOW what a amazing couple of douche bags, here is a guy that wants no more than a bit of simple info and all you can do is give smart ass answers like read the threads. This should be a great forum but guys like you can't be a bit more kind to new guys. Great Job I'm surprised anyone comes to this forum with guys like you.
Reading is essential. XDA is a fantastic forum that will help you with your problems with an electronic smile, but you will avoid many annoyed users by simply using google. We were all new once, even though some of us may forget that, so we understand your curiosity about the captivate because it is a great phone. But like I said, almost every problem us on the web somewhere.
P.s. Welcome to XDA!

Thanks, I just want to make sure I know exactly what I am doing before I do it. Yeah you can google the stuff (and I did), but I wanted specifics, and people's opinions of if it is worth it or not. Thanks for your support!

Like I said above it is good to know there are a few people willing to help out new users (like myself). I did do some googling and know the basics of overclocking, but like stated before, I want opinions and details. Hopefully more helpful people like you two will come along!
P.S. People are contradicting and ignorant. I'm sure they were asking the same questions when they were introduced to overclocking and other new ideas. Ha, we all know karma is a ... and it will give people what they deserve!
EDIT: Also for all of you who say I should google before posting, maybe if you read my question correctly, I asked for details, not a general idea on it.

not here, dude. i read. and read A LOT. there wasnt much need to ask questions that there were already answers for, and easily available to me.
FWIW: i am not trying to be mean....but all the info is already out there...and plenty of topics already covering this EXACT subject
Well from what i understand, overclocking is dependent upon the kernel you are running. But also the processor in the phone. What overclocking essentially does is make the CPU speeds a bit faster. Say for example, the captivate is clocked at 1ghz processor speed, if you were to overclock it you could increase speed by 20% or even 40% on our phone. You just need to find the right kernel. However, this may damage your phone, and can take a hard hit on your battery. You can play around with it and experience it for yourself. And welcome to XDA btw

Yeah fine maybe I should have done a little more research, but to be honest, I did do researching and I do know the general idea on overclocking. I will give you that. But maybe it may sound ignorant, but I don't feel like reading X amount of threads and posts to learn the same thing over and over again when I want specifics.
Sorry if that sounds not professional, but I'm sure many will agree with me that they don't have enough time to go through all these posts. My bad.

Thank you. Finally someone who actually responded to the question!
Just a question though to make sure (since I have read different answers), are there apps to overclock? Or does each kernel need it's own way of overclocking?

Umm i think you can use an app called SetCPU which is on the market for $2.00

I wasnt trying to be rude but really, reading is essential. Check out one of the oc kernel threads and you need to read it. If you cannot spend the time to do at least that, then I promise you will get frustrated. Questions that are as vague as your op will not get you the answers you are looking for.
And as far as being a douche, I spend a lot of time helping people, both here and in irc channels, but people really need to show some initiative by asking specific questions that demonstrate some research has been done.
Edit....don't use setcpu. Use the voltage control app that is specifically designed for use with the kernels. This can normally be found in the kernel thread op.

Dont worry about people getting irritated with you, everyone on here gets mad sometimes, when I first joined, I asked LOTS of vague questions, tried to help people even though I knew nothing, and flipped out after my phone got soft bricked. The three most worst things a new person on XDA could do LOL. As long as you dont do those things or things like this, people (usually)won't toss insults your way, but sometimes people are just in a bad mood.
EDIT: The results of overclocking are debatable. Some people will swear by it while others will swear against. By making your processing system go faster than it should, you increase the chance of it burning out. Personally, I have tried overclocking and you really can't see the difference unless you have the scores side by side, but I did notice a difference with lagfix, which is much safer. If you want to overclock, get a compatable kernel, and the apps: voltage control and setCPU. Voltage control helps you overclock and undervolt (essential to OCing if you want your battery to last) and setCPU helps you control where you want your top top speed to be. But beware, because the faster and longer the overclocking, the more problems arise. I suggest trying it out, if you like it, great! If not, read up on lagfixes, and try those out.

After some reading I came to find that you cannot dl paid apps if you root your phone. I would like to have the apps that I paid for. Is there anything like the iphone hacked phones where you can access the market?
With almost all of the recent ROMs you can download/access paid apps. That problem was fixed a loooooooonng time ago.
Wrong section, and if you would have done more reading you would have found that it is no longer a problem.

I find that basic reading and comprehension skills to be your main problem because it seems that your lack of these two key skills/superhuman abilities leads to you not being able to post this thread in the correct forum and not performing any type of search for an answer to your own question.

Well, I hate to break it to you buddy, but this whole customization thing with the phones isnt a one stop shop. If you dont read, you're going to brick your phone. So since you have this all important life, and by implication, are too good to read up, perhaps you oughtta unroot until you have time to do things right, like maybe reading the sticky that says "dont post threads like this one in the freaking dev section".

eabod....
If it really takes you all day of reading just to understand your cell phone, then you do have a problem.
As said the new roms dont suffer the same fate as the older ones. You should be just fine.
XDA is the wrong place to ask questions, even in the correct forum. People overall here seem to have a attitude that they know it all, and were born that way..its almost like they just jump on the bashing bandwagon simply because its the "happening" thing to do. Mind you only a very few are able to build and release roms, customizations and so on the rest are moochers only they like to pretend they are something special.
If you search, generally you will find what your looking for eventually, sometimes not at all and sometimes you find it but its so buried by other crap you dont know you found it. I guess your best bet is to make damn sure you posted your question in the correct forum, then hope that someone deems you important enough to answer..or just search the countless pages and deprive the bashers of the reason most are here and dont ask...my how the post counts would fall...you see a question asked and its jump on em fellas, he asked a question..1 smart remarks not enough, they line up to leave replies that most have thought of days earlier...just waiting to use it instead of simply linking to the answer, giving an idea where it may be found or something...nah, just bash em, that makes this place look all the more better, a much more friendly environment lol, whatever.
I enjoy xda, but honestly some of you make for a truly elementary experience, while a few others do a lot more...you come here for the roms, mods, hacks, for most of us not the ones we did, we can do or the ones we had a hand in creating..and you cant take a minute or two to answer a few questions? Think of the work the actual devs have done, the time involved, the testing over and over...wanna help some? Answer peoples simple questions without being an ass! If nothing else link em to where they should go!
I disagree, everytime these questions pop up, they are usually answered in the first reply, if not the second one.
But for the most part, I think being an ass is just a way to keep these wrong threads to the minimal.
I've never seen someone being an ass when a member ask a question (doesn't matter related to the topic of not) at the end of a ROMs' thread.

I understand that, somewhat. But after his question was answered, do you see all the other people that posted, for no other reason then to try and belittle the guy that asked the question? Thats what I am referring to, those comments do nothing to help anyone, provide no use what so ever out side of making xda look like a buncha jerks.
Look at all the people that say its not helping by having questions in a release post, as it adds more to the dev having to sift over the comments, yet the " flashing now!" is just as off topic in reality as its not helping the dev know anything about any issues one may have..if people have to say "flashing now" then say I flashed, and heres what I found..see what I am saying?
Honestly people are going to be jerks on any forums, so it just comes with the territory. Usually you can avoid this by trying to learn some basic forum rules. Most are stickyed at the top of the forums. IMO use the search and spend like 15 to 20 mins to figure out what is going on in the forums. And then if your still stuck post in the Q&A forums.
The thing about this post that really roasts my goat is the OP lack of motivation to try and find his own answers. We are not his tech support and everybody here does this for free...Its disrespectful, insulting and lazy...
I have tons of respect for people that try to figure out problems for themselves first (search, google, read).
Please see this video [http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/posting] for proper forum etiquette. (I know, its old but its still damn funny and so true...)
@nickwinn does "eabod" really stand for what i think it stands for? if it does just mention something about the boondocks and i will know for sure

Hey at least the op took the time to read a little bit maybe it was outdated but a least he did try, so cut the guy some slack, he did better than some other people who read nothing and come right to here and expect some hand holding
People like the OP are why this forum is getting worse, and to ducter if you really think we are all assholes why do you come here? If you ask a question in the wrong forum we will most likely give you ****, but also give you a little help. If you use the correct forum we will help you, unless your question is ssomething you could of found out in less then 5 minutes by searching.
This forum has 100's of thousands of members and if half of them are asking questions that have been answered hundreds of times it clogs the forum and we lose sight of other valuable posts or people with real questions about problems that are new and have not been solved.
Furthermore when someone says some **** like they don't have time to read about there cell phone then why are you here in the first place? Don't root your phone or better yet goto the tmobile store and ask them to help you fix your rooted G1. If you can't take the time to read like everyone else does/should then go buy a lg env or something and maybe it will be simple enough for you to figure out.

Second..why not just be happy with 768? i dont think its possible atleast as we speak unless someone comes up with a kernel that allows it. I mean some hero's bootloop at 768 so what would make you think its possible at 825?

"So remember… before you start a thread in development, ask yourself what you are developing. If you can’t answer, then stop, step away from the post button, and think about where you are posting. Would it be better in General or Q&A, or is some more time with your best friend, search, required?"
plus questions about development go in either the rom thread, General, or Q&A.

If in your opinion it is in the wrong spot than state your opinion and move on, who made you a mod? Lord knows in two days this thread will be buried 6 pages into this section and you won't have to see it again. Otherwise it will be moved or deleted, but seriously I don't get what is wrong with people, if you don't have anything to contribute or you can't answer his question than leave it alone. And in the meantime, I'm not so sure it is possible to overclock that high on our devices. I'm sure if it could be than it probably would have been by this point, as amazing as the devs are that we have had working on the hero currently and in the past.

if you would have bothered actually reading that thread i posted you would see that in fact i dont need to be a mod. THE MODS have said quit posting questions in the development section unless you are developing something and use freakin common sense. Sorry Impaler but like i said before recently this development forum is getting flooded with threads that should be located somewhere else. letting one person get away with it has allowed everyone to just randomly post where they like and its getting outta control.
As far as flaming in the thread yes i am to breaking rules. I admit im being hypocritical when i say read the rules. Think about this tho, there is a huge thread above this section that says post threads in the right section.
Sorry again to everyone who's feathers i have ruffled but Please try and post in the right sections.
Sorry for flaming!
If anyone really wants, I'll put out a Decad3nce Uncapped Kernel that allows for 825MHz. Be warned though that I take no responsibility for any damages that occur.
I've heard from someone that Zen said that our Hero's CAN be clocked well over into 900 mhz, (or it has been done) but it's pointless since our phones wouldn't really be able to handle that speed. Plus, the only thing (in my opinion) it would be good for is a pretty Quadrant Score.

Unstable even if you wanted it. And for clarfication:
The HTC Hero(GSM) and G1 share the same cpu(MSM7200A) while we have the MSM7600(CDMA version, same as Eris) which is >= rev 2 and is much improved.

Sorry guys for posting in the wrong spot :/
I should have paid more attention.
I mean no disrespect, but the majority of people on here are very helpful. But I wish some people on these forums would stop being so cryptic with their "I know something you don't know" posts & assuming everybody else is as clever as them. That's why forums get bloated with crap & make it hard work to find what you're actually looking for.
Just get to the point. No more half-answers please!

Cryptic answers actually serve a purpose. Rather than spoon feeding the same information over and over to different people, it encourages them to go do their own research. Usually the 'cryptic' answer contains the keywords necessary for somebody to do a search for themselves.
I find it more effective to piece together information that i've found myself than to have it explained in a way that doesn't always make sense to me. It's the difference between being in Primary school and University. In the latter you're expected to do your own work.

In a sense, I do agree with you on that. Like I said, most of the people are very helpful with their answers. Perhaps cryptic was the wrong word. Terse would have been a better choice of word. The problem for me being a noob to Android is that there is so much misinformation around that to find what you are actually looking for, you have to sift through so much crap first. This could be avoidable if people didn't just give the stock answer "search for it".
Sorry, I'm just a pedantic fool. I don't want to be spoon fed, but I do want a relevant quality answer. I'm no genius, but when I answer a post, I try to be as helpful & unambiguous as possible. I just expect the same.

On one hand I agree with the op that sometimes people can give very vague and condescending answers which can be frustrating for a new user or someone with an issue they need to address asap.
Its never a good thing to dismiss someone as a stupid n00b and not try to help them out.
On the other hand, I think it is beneficial to give someone a push in the right direction and not just spoonfeed them an answer.
When I first came to XDA I knew NOTHING, it was only through being encouraged to read and research my problems that I got to the point where I was able to help others with theirs.
There is also the argument that as this is a development site and not just a one stop shop for answers to questions which Google can answer for you 95% of the time, if you are not able/willing to search and learn then your in the wrong place.

I dont mind helping step by step but always read all instructions and you should be good and if you have issues along the way then ask dont ask me to find stuff for you search and type out steps that are already on this forum.
Ill do that every once in awhile but must be contacted and them understand it takes time to write out a new manual
Indeed. Well, to what half-answers do you refer? Citations, please!

What I did when I joined this forum (and before) was too not only use the search feature but search other sites, Google it, also I checked other forums and blogs. Articles from Lifehacker, the unlockr, other tech blogs...and you know what, it DID take what seemed like forever to get the SDK set up, find the right drivers ect. But you know what DIDN'T HAPPEN, I didn't get one terse or rude answer, I didn't get flamed and I learned alot more in the process. I can root phones and flash ROMs with complete confidence now. I'm not saying my way is the right way but when I did/do ask questions I get a much better response because I've got some knowledge under my belt.

I agree somewhat to the OP, as I was a n00b once too. It was frustrating figuring out issues on my own and reading threads for hours. But I lurked for months when I first started modding seems and setting up QPST and stuff when I first started "hacking" my old motorolas. I eventually got a grasp on things and have been trying to help out where I can.
I can honestly see how old timers and those experienced in all different forms of modding these devices can get terse and not want to just spoon feed the info to the new users. The new users need to learn how to search, follow instructions and get well read on the fundamentals before assaulting the developers with questions answered earlier in threads or in the wiki.
It's a two way street, but I can assure you that it is worth the journey. You can't just take offense when someone when someone doesn't answer directly or refers you to the search function is short answered. And devs/experienced users aren't trying to offend you. Every person here just needs to get along!

Hi guys, may i speak a little bit of my mind?
I've been on XDA for quite a moment now, forget about not contributing to any development please , and i do know one very simple ground rule: SEARCH!!!!!!
But from my time here i realise searching for something and getting the right answer here on XDA does requires getting the keywords right + if to minimise the scope, search in the right forum and thread. The experience is not something Google offers.
Thus alot of times this has happened to myself, especially newbies, forget or skips searching every single forums and threads, looking through a 40 page thread just for the 1 sentence answer. And the result, lots of angry 'old birds' and mods.
Thus can i suggest setting up some kind of Knowledge Base forum or thread? This KB will the centralise of all the essence of developments, bugs, fixes that exists in this forum modified by a Mod/Admin only. Something like a library.
Having a Knowledge Base will really be helpful to (budding) developers as well as technology leechers like me  It reduces effort wasted on searching high and low to the lesser extend, but really dealing REPEATIVELY to replying the same old questions with the same old answer. Just tell people to look at the knowledge base and that's it, no more reason and cause to post repeatative questions. It is different to the stickies existing now. Users still has to look page by page for their answer.
Ok I shall end my whine here now. Thanks for allowing me let off my mind.

Sounds like a good idea.I think you're free to set up a thread like this, where you cover the most important questions and deliver some troubleshooting.
good idea,+1
from experience i know that using any search system can be daunting without correct (key)words so great idea +1:good :good:
Its a good idea. But then, its not like we have tons of roms out. And its not like we have that many bugs on the phone.

Yes. but my point of having it managed and maintained solely by a mod/admin is for the knowledge base not to be 'polluted' by questions and answers. Kinda like a locked thread.

Understand. Perhaps this idea can be utilised at other places of XDA or the entire XDA which im sure with all materials centralised and summerised into a mega knowledge base will be very very awesome.
I think a FAQ can helpful and it will sure help new people.
Creating a KB can be a heavy time consuming job even though we don't many roms.

Every new users or users that isn't active should be forced to watch the "You are a Noob" video till the END the first ten times they try to post a comment...
Then there would be no excuse not to search before asking dumb questions that have been answered a thousand times..
I've read over the last few days multiple posts coming from more than one person that go like ~"I know what you're taking about, I'm a developer too", "dude I'm not a noob I'm a developer too", "I'm better than you, I can develop my custom ROM", and so on.
Truth is...
You're probably not a developer.
Using dsixda's kitchen, UOT kitchen and winzip (and maybe apktools) does not make you a developer.
Following tutorials and copying/pasting smali code does not make you a developer.
You're an interested user, maybe even a themer, but don't be arrogant. Know the difference.
I'm not saying it's a bad thing. It's great that everyone is willing to learn, and these methods are a good place to start. But I say again: you're not a developer.
Call yourself an interested user, a ROM cook, a learning newbie, a themer if you're good at that, but not a developer.
Obviously, the same applies to me.

You may better specify the answer for
WHO THE DEVELOPER ACTUALLY IS ?
Sent from my GT-S5830i using xda app-developers app
Well a developer includes in his work researching, designing, implementing, and testing software. A person who develops stand-alone software (that is more than just a simple program) and got involved with all phases of the development (design and code) is a software developer. On the other hand the one that only implements and does the copy paste of the code is called a programmer. I hope that i was specific and i made myself clear.
ok so we are not devs we know that so why make this thread?

Well said!! I too am seeing too much negativity and rudeness towards people who come here to learn.
They are new so might not understand the rules, yet, but they are here to learn so we should help them not tell them they are worthless noobs and dont deserve your help.
We all learn here and thats what makes XDA a good place to hang out.
No one on this forum is better than anyone else sore may be more advanced along the learning curve.

Nobody here has anything against anyone. Yeah some outbursts are uncalled for. But that is rare. Must be some personal problems or somebody having a bad day. Senior members, contributors, developers etc all have gone through that phase. So dont be offended by anybody's rude behaviour. It wasnt , is and will not be anything personal against anyone. If he ir she has been rude to you....they will realize that later on.

I know that everyone here is human (i guess?) and may have a bad day, but the image that xda passes is that she's not welcoming anyone. It already starts with that noob video that makes me to go through a deep depression. Not complaining about xda, but being nice will bring more people, and sooner or later, more developers, making this community bigger and bigger.

Lol....No u took it all wrong brother. That video isnt about showing anyone down....i have seen it...rather its an informative one accrding to me.....it clearly tells you that "Noob" isnt welcome. Ofcourse....it good to be warned before you start.....newbie is a good thing....people who do not want to read and ask all silly questions when all of it is already mentioned in the OP or a few pages back....are termed as "noobs". When i joined XDA i didnt even had this phone with me....for 6 months what i did was to read and clarified doubts....used google....It has almost every answer to your question...believe . I am still not a developer, nor a themer nor a rom cook....i dont get to spend much time on pc.....even then this googling and reading has given me enough knowledge to clarify my doubts myself. XDA is not a human or animal.....its all of us together....that video was sarcastic and informative. Such videos dont depress you...its the people here on XDA who are responsible for your depression and happiness. And as far as i know...here people are quiet helpful....just a few "anger bursts" but that i believe is quiet fine and normal... We have people from all cultures and countries. Diffrences do tend to occur.
Where do u suggest to start to learn if I know these "basic" things and I'd like to be a developer of this phone?

Yeah, man, you're right. Because of your answer, i've realized that being a noob is not a bad thing. Everyone started as a noob. Act like one is the problem. Starting a new thread to ask if we got jelly bean means asking for a "anger burst". Exactly like you said, by having a Galaxy Ace I/C/M, we got a lot of countries, like Brazil (from me) and countries from Asia. So, thanks for your answer, and sorry for your trouble.
GermainZ what you explained in the first post isn't developing, it's programming.
Everyone can be a developer, as long as they're helping the project, even if its only reporting glitches, bugs etc, they're still developers.
Programming on the other hand requires some experience but isn't that difficult as you think it might be, Just look at python lol, pretty much anyone who knows english can write in that.
I think you might need do a little research before posting such ****ty threads.

This is out of context now.
If I remember correctly, when I posted this, there was some kind of flame war going on between ROM cooks/users (not sure what exactly it was about, or who was involved - it doesn't matter). This thread was mostly to show that while everybody appreciates the effort, they shouldn't act as if they are superior. You really should have been there to understand.
The whole OP is exaggerated for that (and FYI, since you mentioned it, I can code basic stuff in C++/Java, and more advanced stuff in Python, tho I prefer Python as it's neat, has one of the best documentations I've seen, and I can execute it directly from within my bash scripts without any extra steps).
