Hi
I purchased my AT&T 3G compatible Nexus One the first day it went on sale, I just updated to Froyo and I notice that sometimes my screen fails to respond. I have to power on and off my screen for the issue to go away. Some examples are when im typing and I hit and key and it chooses another one or i'm trying to scroll on the menu and even if im picking something from the top the phone highlights the menu icon at the bottom. Are this issue just with my phone? has anybody been able to fix this?, If i call HTC support and they send me and new phone will it have the same issues?
Please guys let me know... this is driving me crazy

the screen on this phone blows... plain and simple... you will just have to get used to it...
do you think i should get rid of it?
Hi,
Don't get rid of the phone. You don't have to reboot, just lock the screen by pressing the power button, then unlock it. I've had it a couple of times but it goes away when I do that.
Also, be aware that it's very sensitive to any part of your hand that might be leaning over the edge of the screen, or hovering over the touch buttons. For example if my finger is hovering over the home button but not touching it, and then I touch somewhere higher up on the screen, it may respond as if I had pressed menu.

So...are you saying we are holding the phone the wrong way? Lol.
the nexus has this issue with the screen. its not a big deal, just lock the screen and unlock it, it fixes the problem. its some kind of mis calibration issue. yeah it sucks, but not the end of the world. only takes 2 seconds to fix it.

Heehee. I guess Android isn't immune to that either. Nor is the EVO or Droid Incredible (not identical problems but they're still there). I think it's inevitable that as we try and jam more and more "magic" into a single unit, things start to crosstalk in unpredictable ways and glitches emerge.
I have to say, the touch-sensitive buttons on Milestone & N1 really throw off people who haven't used them before. If I pull up a picture or video and I'm showing it to someone, inevitably they clutch the phone with a finger on a touch button, and then I have to get them back into the app and explain what not to touch. That's one reason I'd rather have physical buttons such as on the Desire.
I have this touchscreen problem as well, and yes its a big deal for me! I spent $580.00 for this phone. This shouldnt be happening at all! I've tried all sorts of troubleshooting(deleting cache partition, updating to the latest froyo, restoring factory settings, tried without installing 3rd party softwares, etc..) before i finally came to the realization that this is a hardware issue. Ive tried narrowing down to possibly when and how it occurs, but you can't. It just happens when it happens. It's impossible to predict. When this problem occurs, watch closely to where the calibration is off. During the problem, the calibration is only off on the bottom half of the screen, more so close to the bottom right. The top part will work perfectly. You can test this out by swiping left to right or vice versa on the homescreen. This problem will also affect the Pinch-to-Zoom in Browser, and the ability to type correctly using the default keyboard or 3rd party's like Swype. I received an exchange thru HTC a couple days ago, and not only was this exact touchscreen issue prevalent in this unit, but also it suffered from the purplish screen tint. This issue seems to have existed since they first launched this phone, but for some reason there has been no fix for it. It's funny that the EVO received a software fix promptly after the issue was reported by many. Why not the N1?? Because it's hardware, that's why! Feature wise, this phone is by far my best PDA, I mean I really love this phone, but $580.00 is too much for such an issue to exist. I'm hoping that there's only a number of bad batches floating around. I would say, if i receive 4 exchanges, all with the same exact issue, i may look into a class action. I definitely wouldn't want to be stuck with this problem after my year warranty is up!
I haven't had the 'crazy screen' thing since FRF85B, I assumed they'd fixed it.
I haven't had it since upgraded to Froyo too
not hardware problem
I encounter this problem a couple of times and I tested two things: useing trackball I ran touch sens app and tested the touch sensor, it was fine, second I killed all apps using a task man and it fixed the issue. I am on froyo.
Sent by my Nexus one.
I experienced this yesterday for the first time on FRF91 (unrooted Stock build). I couldn't press the "enter" button on stock keyboard. It just kept choosing Delete instead. Lock/unlock screen via power button sorted it.
So the problem is still there in latest build of FroYo (for me anyhow!)
Anyone else?
I've had this problem ever since I got my N1. Sometimes made me want to switch back to my iPhone! Makes it a lot harder for my son (2 1/2) to use the phone too.
Seems reports are mixed to whether froyo fixes it or not. But it gives me hope. I've been using CM5.0.8, holding out for their final release but this gives me a reason to try MCR.
I have upgraded to FroYo FRF91 but still see the same issue.
Sometimes I face with the calibration's flaw for the left bottom corner of the touch screen.
What a shame I have paid 750$ here for this phone. I really love it but this flaw screwed up all the pleasure.

So it is a hardware issue? Maybe we can get htc to replace our phones.
Well looks like I still have this issue with frf91.

i think no one really knows. Would be a strange hardware issue which can be fixed by locking and unlocking.

I've just received my phone back from repair, OTA to froyo immediately
Then I realized that the right edge of the screen is not responsive to touches at all...though it displays image properly
Would it be a software issue? Or should I send the phone back?

Of course it's not a software issue, send it back. Try multitouch paint for giggles, see what happens when you try to paint over on that side.

Definitely not working...I also tried wiping cache and data and same result
I was wondering if it is a rare issue with Froyo and would like to flash another rom to see what happens...but my phone is stock everything and I don't want to void my warranty if it is the hardware :/

Personally I seriously doubt that's a software problem. As far as I know there's no "calibration" to be done on a capacitive screen.
The digitizer has to be faulty. I would send it back and get another replacement.
I have an EVO and found this thread through search. I have the SAME problem, the right edge of the screen is absolutely not responsive to touch input. When I first got the phone it worked fine. I rooted it and started throwing different roms on and thats about when I noticed it. It would happen sparingly and then go away. Using the 'Dotty' app I was able to find out what was happening, I would touch the right edge and then untouch it and it would continue to register a 'phantom' touch on the right edge that would wiggle up and down and the circle would quickly change colors (meaning its moving) but there was nothing touching the screen! This was an easily repeatable thing. Dotty would continue to register real touches elsewhere on the screen but the phantom touch input wouldn't go away. Outside of Dotty, I assume the phantom touch would be going on over on the right and all apps would focus on that as it was the 'first' touch point, and then ignore any other touches. This created the illusion of the touchscreen not working at all. This problem would come and go, seemingly random. I would have to turn the screen on/off repeatedly and it eventually went away. Fast forward to now, The 'phantom' touch seems to have disappeared but I now can no longer touch the right quarter inch of the screen. This renders, mainly, the P button useless, unless I go into landscape mode. Does this also sound like a digitizer issue? Would this be covered under the 1 year HTC warranty?
Hey
I am currently running 2.1 on my Samsung Galaxy S the only thing ive done to it is root it, so its running the normal firmware and I'm waiting till the end of september ti get the official 2.2 before I look at flashing something custom onto it, anyway...
I have an odd problem with the phone where the touchscreen part of the phone will become unresponsive for no real reason, sometimes playing a game, sometimes just sending a text or browsing the market. My actuall hard buttons like the homescreen or volume control still work during this and the only way to make my phone un-freeze is to press my power button once to turn the screen blank, then press it again and slide to unlock the phone, then it works fine.
No clue how to fix this... anyone got any ideas?
Thanks in advance..
Sounds like hardware issue. Get it fixed
Thanks for the response (know it was a while ago)
I've had the phone 2 months now in a contract with T-Mobile UK through Carphone Warehouse... Does anyone know what my return rights are? Talking to them later just want to know where I stand when asking for a replacement.
Thanks

hello, i have same issue. Did you fix this problem?
Thanks
This comes really long after. But did anyone find out the reason for this?
I've got an Galaxy S that works fine most of the time. But from time to time the screen will become unresponsive. If I press power button to lock the screen and unlock it again, it goes away. So it seems that it is a software problem.
Another peculiarity is that the keys on the Samsung keyboard are very inaccurate to respond to touch from time to time. Sometimes it is just impossible to hit a letter in the mid row and pressing "s" can put "wz" on the screen.
I was thinking to just put CM on it anyway. But it will void the guarantee in case it is a hardware problem. So I want to make sure that it is software related.
Did anyone manage to fix this either by returning the phone or removing TouchWiz. I am not living in the same country as I bought the phone. So returning it for a checkup will take some effort.
For what ever it is worth
I took the phone to an unofficial service center that flashed the phone with a brand new Android 2.3.3 (the phone came with 2.3.5). A downgrade, which normally isn't a very good deal. But the dead areas on the screen are gone. The phone is much more responsive and the keyboard is not acting funny anymore.
So... if you are experiencing the same. Try getting rid of the TouchWiz before you start taking the phone apart.
Good luck!
I get it occasionally but I've grown to live with it, mine tends to be the kernel recently flashed devils for 4.0.3 but after fiddling with volts mine stops.

Hi Guys, the home screen (and all other screens on the phone) flicker and fizz on my HD7. It comes and goes. It started doing it yesterday and a reboot fixed it, but its come back today. It even got to the point where I could not unlock the phone because I couldn't see the keyboard on the screen. The whole screen was black. I eventually managed to unlock the phone because I remembered the location of the keys, but its a bit weird. The only thing I have installed recently is the Faceboot app. I think I'll remove that to see if it makes a difference.

Not sure whats going on with youtube, but I recorded another one here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_XDcA7c2Rb0
If it doesn't work, try again in an hour or so... hopefully youtube will have pulled its finger out by then and finished processing the vid!
Here's another vid of the keyboard going mad in the messaging screen... hohum..

If you press the volume buttons when it happens, it seems to fix it (well it did for me the one time I got to try it).

What were you doing before this happened??
Absolutely nothing! I literally just press the power button to turn on the screen to login to the phone (note: Im not booting, the phone is only asleep) and the issue is there. Its doing it by itself. As far as I can trace back my steps there could be two causes I can think of. Though these might just be a coincidence obviously. I installed the Facebook App (which is now removed) and I changed the wallpaper to a photo I took with the phone's camera. Not exactly 'hacking'.... I removed the Faebook app and changed the wallpaper and rebooted the phone. Its been OK since yesterday, but we'll have to wait a bit longer to see whether it returns. The keyboard bit is especially funky, as its a pain to type anything when all the keys are flashing randomly....
This has happened about 3 times to me -- always when I'm running some fairly intensive UI operations - scrolling around the Zune hub, the marketplace. Could be a coincidence, I guess.

+1 (HD7) Happened a couple of times (wasn't doing anything special).
happens to me from time to time.. sometimes itll go away or i just reboot the phone.
it seems to happen when im doing a lot of things, i figure its just early glitches in the software
I've had both of these glitches today (the flickering home screen and the bizarre looking messages app), and I only bought the new handset yesterday. I know it's early days for WP7, but I really would have hoped there'd be some degree of stability.
Anyway, regardless of what I think, I'd appreciate the ability to terminate an application myself since this would appear to be related to a process not releasing the screen completely. Can't do it at the moment, but I hope Microsoft can give us that capability in the first service release.
Similar Problem
Hey,
I've watched the Youtube videos that were posted and my problem is similar but worse, the screen doesn't just flicker it turns into a kind of trail when I scroll up and down on the home page. So for example my top two tiles are Phone and Messaging, when this happens I get partial images of those two tiles up and down the screen.
I'm not sure whether this is just a software issue or whether its worth returning now while its still relatively new and getting a new one.
I will see if I can find the photos I took on another phone and post them.
Any thoughts will be gratefully received.
Many thanks,
Jess
Hi Guys,
Sorry to drag up an old thread but I work for a major UK Network in the technical team and I've had a few customers reporting this fault on their HD7's. I'm just interested to see the general consensus of users and whether they have suffered this issue be it intermittently, constantly or even just once or twice. I'm also interested in whether there are any temporary solutions to the problem. I may be able to raise this further with HTC although from the looks of it, there are numerous cases open regarding this complaint. The puzzling factor is it only seems to affect the HD7 and not other WP7 handsets.
Thanks in advance.
Just once for me. What I noticed about it when it happened, was that it reminds me of the gleen flicker on the xbox360 when you power it off.
I get my screen completely garbagging maybe twice a week, reboot cures it. I suspect a firmware glitch which I'm hoping Nodo will cure.

As you imply, this is a known issue. Its also been fixed already by HTC in a subsequent firmware which football has made available on another thread. For those not comfortable with flashing the firmware manually the updated firmware will be included in the NODO update.
A post in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1003919&page=2 confirms that the firmware is updated once Nodo is applied to a handset - 2250.09.16901.401 to be exact.
I manually flashed firmware 2250.09.16803.206 to my device which fixed the video issues.
Seems rather telling that you have come to XDA-devs rather go through your carriers formal business ties to HTC??
Hi there,
I'm having a problem with my touch screen. It works fine most of the time, except, when I tap the same area many times very quickly (like when I'm backspacing a whole message), that par of the touch screen eventually becomes unresponsive. It becomes responsive again once I turn the screen lock on and off again (the top button). I've read a few threads around with very similar problems (not on here I don't think).
I replaced the touch screen a week ago, but I've only noticed this today, so I'm not sure whether or not it's related.
I'm just running standard LG software and haven't put any third party stuff on there (apart from apps). I've done a full reset using the update utility, and using the hidden menu, but this did not fix the problem.
Here's some details about my phone:
Model: LG-P970
Android Version: 2.3.4
Kernel Version: 2.6.35
Build Number: GRJ22
Software Version: LG-P970-V20C
Please let me know if I should provide any more information. I'm just interested in knowing whether it's a problem with the touch screen, or the phone's software.
Also, I'm new to forums and what-not, so if I'm doing anything wrong, let me know!.
Ok, I've realised this is in the wrong category. Was bound to have done something wrong - won't happen again!
Thanks
Hi there,
Tell me please, does the same happen on the touch keys (menu, home, back, search)?
Also, do you have any screen protector applied?
I have said this few times in other posts..iIts a strange bug, like the touch being lost.
Its fixed easy by locking the phone, thus shutting down the screeen and touch sensor. After few seconds unlock the phone and check if it is solved, or do the process again.
Thanks
Hi Guys,
Thanks for the replies, sorry I've been away for a while.
It doesn't tend to happen on the home, back, etc, keys. It tends to happen mostly near where the backspace key on the keyboard is. It happens in other places, but it takes a lot more to trigger it to happen in the other places. (by trigger, I mean if you tap the same spot heaps when writing a message it starts to happen).
Also, yes, I've applied a screen protector. The screen protector got put on about 10 hours after the new screen, but I can't for the life of me remember whether or not it was doing it without the screen protector.
Yes, locking and unlocking the phone does fix the problem, but it's a bit of a pain doing this a few times when writing a long message.
I'd really like to know if anyone can tell me whether replacing the touchscreen will solve the problem, or if its to do with other hardware/software. I've since started using the CM roms and it's still an issue.
Cheers.
I have a touch-screen problem with my LG P970 (CM-10 stable)
Hi,
I have been using my lg p970 for more than 2 yrs however when I installed cm10 stable i my phone it works fine for some time then touch-screen does not response properly. When I touch in one corner response comes from other corner, especially while typing when I press one key 2-3 other keys are also pressed even though the keys which are press not even close to each other. I have install another keyboard from market this has reduce some misbehavior.
Please any one has a 100% solution to this problem please reply.
Thank You.

I'm with one of these P970h, the screen/digitalizer is cracked but works ok, I tried updating to CM10, the touch/soft buttons stopped working (they light up), also tried official 4.0.4, no luck, then the original 2.3 carrier modded, perfectly working! came back to 4.0.4, dont work anymore...
For me it is rom related...
for now I'm using NavBar with 4.0.4
Any ideas?
another one here..almost same with other members here, softkey not respon when in 4.0.4 and up ROM both stok official or custom, but working when back to 2.3.x down ROM and it not really responsive at all.try and pray for solution.

My main reason for reverting back to 2.3.4. Usually occurred when receiving a call; I couldn't answer or reboot the phone. I had to pull the battery every time.
I'm not aware of any fix, save reverting back to a GB ROM.

If it works with 2.3.4 and not other versions, it's a ROM issue. Changing the screens probably won't help.
This loss of touch was reported by many users, and it's always a 4.0.4+ problem. Something software-wise is crashing, or there's a driver bug.

Anyone here have a 64gb DevelopersEdition that has problems with the back button and home button not responding half the times. Mine seems to lag big time. Seems like one has to tap the back or home button several times before it responds. Is it a software issue or screen issue?
The contact sensitive area of those buttons is very small. I don't remember if it was software update or just me getting used to where I need to hit the buttons, but it got better and does not bother me anymore. But I do remember being in same boat in the beginning. Currently on ARHD 9. Been switching between ARHD and trickdroid. No issues now.
Also some screen protectors do play havoc with the buttons.
From my HTC One, in your face.....
Sprint just had an OTA update that greatly helps this.
Mine was ok with no screen protector. With a Screen protector I had to sometimes hit them a few times. Since the OTA, it works great with the screen Protector.
Supposedly it's in the Kernel of the OTA update.
I would suspect this fix has been released on other platforms as well.
But it is explicitly listed by Sprint as 1 of 3 things addressed in the release notes for the update.
I have been hoping to see some sort of software offer pop up on my device but nothing yet since I got mine

i do have the same issue and i am using arhd 9 dev edition too... I am pretty sure it has nothing to do with screen protector since i had the issue with it off as well..
but its random and no one has offered a fix unless its hardware...
ill describe my problem here. like you said it is sometimes the "back" or "home" button that becomes unresponsive but it is never both at the same time. ODD right? i would say it happens once a day and it has no specific way to trigger the event.
ive just lived on with it wishing it really isnt hardware, but the fact that you just mentioned it on a 64gb dev edition is scaring me haha

It is actually a pain in the ass when it is unresponsive. I have a screen protector on now but it was the same without the screen protector. Took it off just to see if the same problem of it being unresponsive still persisted and sure enough it did.

hopefully some dev of a custom kernel can fix it zzz
