So.
Since I dont want a Vodafone-altered android on my phone I decided to unlock my N1.
As far as I understood, it is possible to flash the latest OTA manally with the unlocked bootloader.
I dont want any alternative recoverys so far, since i want to keep the android stock for now.
Can someone please provide a short description how to do this? All guides i found require an alternative recovery image.
Thanks so far.

Just download a stock image like ERD79 from here. Then extract recovery.img from that and flash it to your phone with the command 'fastboot flash recovery recovery.img'.
Now download the OTA for FRF91 from Google. Put it on your sdcard and rename it to update.zip.
Flash that with the "Apply update.zip" from recovery. There should be several guides for manually applying OTA-updates available. After flashing the stock recovery from ERD79 you can follow those guides.

USE AT YOUR OWN RISK! CAN BRICK YOUR PHONE
How To:
just put the PG32IMG.zip on the root of your SD Card and boot into fastboot
follow the instructions on the screen
Download

The filename should be PG32IMG.zip
it's in the zip
just forget it at the guide

does it also work with s-on?
i guess
but i didn't tried it
but u don't need it because if you are having s-on you only can get 2.3.3 by using goldcard method which will flash the radio too
and how about an ota update? the ota does flash the radio either, or does it?
to put it in a nutshell i am going to s-off my phone this afternoon, so i need to know how to flash the newest CustomRom wich actually is the 2.3.3 rom correctly on my incS. so i need to flash this radio first?
doesn't matter what order you flash them in, I did ROM first then radio

thx my prophet
so
s-off -> rom and radio -> finish?! or did i miss something?
(BTW l0st.prophet your rom is already rootet, so if i flashed your rom on my incS i didnt need to flash or install anything else to finish, or do i?)
Best order is:
- S-OFF
- Root via SuperOneClick (psneuter)
- Install RonManager from the market and install clockworkmod
- Boot into recovery and install rom
- Reboot into HBoot and install radio
Iam sorry, but i really cant find the superonclick root by psneuter... Could you be so Kind, to Post the Link. Iam on the go...
Thx a lot!!

I am trying to install Amon_RA recovery on my N1.
I followed the instructions from the Full Update Guide (wiki.cyanogenmod) and from XDA (recovery RA-passion-v2.2.1 by Amon-RA who does an outstanding dev).
Checked md5sum of recovery-RA-passion-v2.2.1.img : matched
Checked md5sum of recovery-RA-passion-v2.2.1-CM.img: matched
The phone is unlocked. I use fastboot to flash the recovery. I get “Signature verify fail”.
I made a thorough search and I did not find an explanation and an answer other than for rooted phone.
I do not want to root.
I tried disabling the anti virus program. I reset the phone. I checked the installation of SDK. I checked the Environment Variables in “Advanced settings” on Widows Vista and Win7. I even checked my sanity.
I would appreciate any guidance to solve this issue.

hi, sorry if my english isn't perfect, but i want to try to help u.
If with the command fastboot devices you get a report the fastboot.jpg in attachments you'r ok.
Unlock the bootloader, command prompt do this: fastboot oem unlock
and accept the question on the mobile phone.
now you have phone unloocked so no free assistance if you broke.
Procede to next step, flash the recovery download rar from attachments and then in the fastboot do this: fastboot flash recovery recovery-RA-passion-v2.2.1.img if you get problem repost.
teh in the bootloader go to bootloader (power button) and then recovery (power button) phone will reboot in recovery mode.
If you have problem post another time and forgive my bad english =)

You said "I do not want root" so why do you want to install custom recovery? The purpose of installing custom ROM or recovery is to gain root access but you don't want to root your phone so don't flash custom ROM or recovery. And you should post in Q&A not both places.
Molto grazie.Your English is far better than my Italian.
As I said the phone is unlocked and, yes, I get fastboot (if not I could not go to the point where I am, I believe)

Yes, you're right, but i'm agree with Taodan, why you should have to flash recovery if you don't want root ? it isn't very useful XD maybe you want root in order to backup a stock rom, but if you want a stock rom of android 2.3.4 i can upload one for you XD anbd thanks for say my engolish isn't bad and yes Forza Italia XD but I want to get live in the UK or USA !!!

I owe you an apology for not knowing that I have to justify the purpose of my question.
I was naive enough to consider that flashing a recovery was obviously to help install a Cyanogen ROM. My naivete even brought me to believe that installing a Recovery without flashing a ROM will bring me back to the stock recovery.
Going further I should have added "for the moment" to my decision of not rooting.
And my final answer, regarding the wrong thread, is that I tried to edit my post in order to move to the right thread when I discovered my mistake.
Thank you for your reply. It will help me re-check my sanity.
That said are you ready to offer me a solution which could be posted on the other thread?

My main concern is not to root or not to root.
Re-read my post and you will discover that my question specifically asks for a solution regarding a flash recovery.
Anyway, I do appreciate your contribution. Prego

Please, read Post# 6 and the last sentence of the 1st paragraph. It should make you happy
Hello there
Are you one of many who are trying to get OTA updates but it fails? Running Stock but with root, CWM/TWRP, custom kernel? look no further!
All you need is:
Unlocked Bootloader,
Custom Recovery
Step 1: When you hear news of a new update arriving for the HTC One, click this link : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2224752
Step 2: Download the odexed rom
Step 3: Once downloaded, copy the ROM to your device
Step 4: reboot into recovery
Step 5: install the ROM
Step 6: Reboot
Thats it, you have the LATEST FULLY STOCK HTC Software installed, bypassing all the carrier approvals for an OTA. you will not loose any contacts, files, apps.
credits go to mike1986 and all other developers that help contribute to roms and system dumps

That will give you the stock OS, but it will not affect firmware (hboot, radio, drivers, etc.). For that, you have to flash the firmware package in rebootRUU mode.

there is a thread for radios, i just see too many noobs unlocking and cwm'ing and then they want to undo all of that just because of an OTA.. so this is their solution

Okay, but you should edit the OP, because "firmware" means something else and may sow some confusion. I see many, many posts from noobs who think flashing custom roms will update their hboots or radios, which is not the case.

Don't forget to fastboot flash the boot image, and you'll need to download SuperSU and flash the zip after you flash the ROM for it to boot up completely.

Thanks Captain...how do you fastboot flash a .zip file? never done that before...I have flashed a image file but not a zip. I have downloaded your rom and waiting to make sure I flash your 0P6BIMG_m8whl_2.16.651.4_boot_kexec-hardboot_patched.zip correctly before moving forward. You don't need that zip file. Just extract to boot.img from the ROM zip. The zip file is specifically for MultiROM support.

Yes I did to get it going. What would I have to do to get the 2.xx rom going? Or do I need to just get it running first on the old version? I really do appreciate all the help! Flashing the 2.xx base ROM requires updating your firmware. You needed an older stock ROM so you could S-OFF and do update it, correct? I thought that was the original issue?

Is it OK to extract the recovery.img and flash that by itself? Reason I ask, me and my buddy r @work right now, no access to fastboot, this is actually for him, I have a Verizon m7 and he has a sprint. He wants to take the OTA and doesn't have a backup of his stock recovery, and once I find this recovery for him I'm gonna use flashify to flash it (I know, not the preferred method here on xda, but I've done it many , MANY times before).
So I can just extract the recovery.img and flash that by itself, correct?

I thought about that, but I've never done it before so I didn't want to suggest it. My guess is that if the phone is s-off, it should work.
