Dalvik-Cache Moving? - Motorola Droid and Milestone Q&A, Help & Troublesh

I dunno what I did but I followed AllDroid back when it was alive and I think I followed the moving dalvik-cache hack.
All I remember was some stuff about moving stuff around and doing mot_boot_mode.
Sorry I'm not a crazy hacker or anything but I just follow instructions and when I'm done I hope it did the job, and I never look back... theres just too much code and mumbo jumbo that my brain will explode. This was 2 months ago... or whenever Telus 2.1 came out.
Well today Iw as playing in root explorer and looking at /data/dalvik-cache and it looks like theres 94mb of stuff there. Huh? I thought it got all moved to /cache ?? I looked in /cache, and it looked like 94mb of stuff was there.
So it looks like Dalvik-cache moved in my case, but does this mean the original is still there and needs to be wiped for me to free up that space?
And I spent all afternoon googling Dalvik-Cache and Milestone, and there seems to be no guide out there anymore. I don't even know if what I did worked. It seems like such an obscure topic now that the old AllDroid is gone

Hi,
Im the maker of that script
If you look at the script, the original dalvikcache will be removed, then symlink to one in /cache

Need help with linux swap

First of all yes i SEARCHED for a answer
ok i no how to partition my sd card i have the fat32 ext4 and linux swap partition on my sd card but after that what do i do? Do i just load the hero rom and it will run smoother or should I download swapper from the market and fool around with that some.
ps. When i check my internal memory i have about 27mb
Any help will be appreciated
No you didn't search for answer and this is in wrong forum.
Yes it automatically does it on hero and it will run smoothly (for hero).
edit: just saw you said you have 27 mb internal... clear data on browser maybe? the point of apps2sd is to have higher internal memory than that lol.
Ok
1st. Of all I did search and unless you have a ****1ng camera on my computer how would you no?
But thanks any way
With an attitude like that, i would write you off real quick...best of luck with that though.

Ouch, another tough guy. If you searched you didn't do a very good job. Next time try using the words "linux" and "swap". There are at least a dozen threads on the subject.
Try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/search_rop.php?searchid=27381858

I always try not to post ... for specific reasons ... but this is funny. Everyone over at xda have been messing with swap for a long time already and it's like posted from where ever he got his ROM from. You didn't even have to search.
Your the one asking for help so don't give him an attitude man. We're here to help not to screw you over, but you gotta do your homework first.
also .... there google.com .... use it.
Just like others said, I really doubt you searched. This has been discussed many many times. Also like the other poster said you shouldn't even had to search, it should have been on the dev's main page.
Im a new poster but I been reading these forums for months and I searched for everything I needed in this forum and I found everything I needed to know.
That was your second post here and you are already talking smack. Dont expect too much help when you come here with an attitude like that.

[Q] Is anyone willing to help me Root my HTC Hero? Build # 2.32.651.2

I've looked all over this site, and found a LOT of great write-ups on how to root these phones. However, I haven't found an easy, start to finish, "Rooting For Dummies" type of write up for those of us with virgin, Build #2.32.651.2, Heros.
Is anyone here willing to post up an up to date, step-by-step write up on exactly what I need to do to root my phone? Imagine that I have zero of the required apps and that I have never "rooted/jailbroken" a phone before. I hate the crap apps Sprint put on here, I'd like to save apps to my 16gb SD card vs waste phone space, I'd like to download homebrew apps, etc...I can't do any of those things with this unrooted phone.
Thank you VERY much in advance for your help!!!
Alberto
I don't think you have looked enough or searched properly. Anyways, here are some links that might help you:

I saw Regaw's rooter thread before making mine, and for those of you who know what he's talking about, it's probably very easy and well layed out. (he seems to know his stuff! But for me, right from the start I'm lost. Specifically the part that states...
Usage:
Run the "Hero Root.exe" on your computer, then plug in your Hero. It will recognize that you plugged it in, and a big button the reads "ROOT ME" will appear. Press that button and watch as your phone is rooted in under 50 seconds from start to finish.
Where and what is the "Hero Root.exe?" Half of the verbiage used is jibberish to me. I was looking for some simpler step-by-step directions...like ones similar to this write-up... http://www.talkandroid.com/guides/htc-hero-root-guide ... but that write up is old and doesn't seem like it would work for my phone. The write-up seems easy enough to understand.
DL this
And also DL this
Then plug in this
Look for this
Type in this
Hold this button down
etc.
I might be asking for too much. If that's the case, sorry. I'm a mechanical, automotive, finance guy, and sometimes electrical guy. The techy stuff (IT, hacking phones, etc) has unfortunately never been my strong suit.
Regaw provides a link to the HeroRoot.exe software in his OP. I think the link takes you to his website and you choose either 32-bit or 64-bit download.

I got no problems helping a guy out but you may be asking for a cookie bigger than you can eat. Especially after you say your not IT, Tech savvy. If you want to learn we can certainly answer away. But be forewarned this is work. You will at some point not have a working phone for a few minutes or a few hours or a few days. You will read and re-read for hours. You will pull your hair out. You will put your eye out kid.
If you follow the link to Regaw's page at the bottom the link is there for X86 and the other download is for 64bit.
If you cannot gather stuff from the links I have provided, I don't think you should really worry about rooting or installing a ROM. I think you are better off with what you have right now. Take this as friendly advice, not sarcastic.

I 2nd this.
I think maybe my original issue was that I was on a work PC that is VERY restricted in the way of what internet material we're able to see. I originally didn't see links and info.
Working on this now...
"Connected - not a CDMA Hero"
Go find the z4root program. Takes less than a minute to root your Hero. Then you will need a recovery image and you should he all set.
That or super one click. Both are easy and quick.

I've taken every suggestion in this thread, DLed every single suggested file, followed every single link and all following links, and have found nothing but broken links, crappy non-working files, and have only managed waste a bunch of my time to take up more space on my laptop. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong.

what I did a long time ago(back in Dec 2010 ) was pull my microsd card out place in a reader put copies of the files on the root of the card aka [bold]/sd [/bold](unrevoked forever, the rom, cwm and gapps..) I was likely to be flashing(or launching) with clockworkmod recovery ..cwm ( now using ra 1.7 as it has been more forgiving to me on flashing) did a few NAND backups using cwm after doing unrevoked then restoring said NAND backups to make sure when I did flash the custom rom that if it borks/I bork that I can do a recovery back to stock(while still under stock you should download and install a file explorer and ,my personal fav, root explorer to be able to see files on your sd card). Pretty much any way to screw it up I've believe I've done it or at least came close to it. I have read of the heroc thread of aosp's gbcm from page 1 up to 1050ish and still a noob. But one thing I'll say is always do a backup( ran 3-10 for awhile as couldn't get any newer to install thru cwm 3xxx or it would do a bootloop/fc on setup, etc.).
So you.downloaded and ran z4root and it didn't work?

My 2 cents is that you probably don't need to be rooting. But if you must, read up on RUU.
There's too many chances to accidentally delete the wrong thing with root. Eventually you'll be doing an RUU.

Yes my friend, it is a pain in the ass and could potentially waste a lot of your time. Forums exist today solely to help 2 groups of people. Noobs like you and I and Addicts like Me and a lot of other folks. Hang in there or punt, your choice. There are some really nice folks here that will help you too but you have to put in the time, no getting around that.

Dude - I'll say it AGAIN, you should seriously reconsider rooting/flashing, if you could not get it done inspite of claiming to have read the information, something's not right.
When I rooted my phone, I just followed the stuff that was on the wiki, it was smooth sailing. I think, with all the information and super devs on this (Hero CDMA) forums, Hero is the easiest to root and handle.

Feel free to troll my stupidity :P

So, some may know I spent the last week not able to restore 2.2.2 because I could not mount /data.
I just tried it again, and then restored user data only (not user data and internal storage) and it booted. I haven't done much with it yet, but I think it should be fine.
So, after when you can't mount /data, restore user data. I feel like an idiot now, but hope this can help someone else who runs into the same problem.
Since this was a "really stupid I didn't think of it before" moment, feel free to troll me. I probably deserve it

[Q] Need advice on stock N1 before deciding to Root/Mod

Alright, please don't butcher me and be constructive before posting. I've noticed a lot of people posting in this forum getting bashed by others not really helping in anyway.
Anyway, I got a stock N1 2.3.4 and love it. The only issue I have with my N1 is storage. Now I have done the whole adb thing and set to go to the SD card, but I am app hungry as I am a systems engineer and have a lot of troubleshooting apps. Problem being, I have to constantly choose between what I need vs. what I want to use; and both conflict due to size. I have been looking at possibly rooting and even possibly going to a mod (Cyanogen) but do I really need to? My only issue is storage of the apps, so if I can get all the apps I need onto my N1 without having to do any of the previously mentioned, I rather do that.
Any ideas and help would be awesome.
If you root you can run a rom such as, cyanogen which allow moving app to sd-ext. (a script such as dark tremor's a2sd is required)
You could even move dalvik cache and data to the ext. Moving app to the fat 32 don't help much as data still reside internally taking up space.
I guess the follow up question would be then, does it do it natively or like you said, there will be some reading and tinkering to do?
I just rooted to CM7 for the same reason and I get like 100 to 200mb extra space with all my apps already installed before I used to have 25mb free. it does make a difference good luck rooting.

Read the FAQ, question 9.
There is a good reason why some people are bashed on the forum - it's because they refuse to read and do their homework before they go around opening threads and asking the same question for 100000th time. Please try to avoid being one of those getting bashed, and before you ask - invest your time searching the forum for answers. Think of it this way: are you the first that is likely to ask that question? Does it seem like a rare question? And if both answers are "no" - then you'll most probably find your answer without asking.

Some people are just cranky... there is always a bit of RTFM...but this is a forum.
I finally made the plunge about a month ago with CM7 for some very similar reasons as I was just running out of space to run any good applications. I still don't have it tweaked the way I want but doing more research on getting Darktremor to work best for my application.
I have been reading these forums since before I got my N1 and just did not have the need to install any of the ROM's...mainly as I did not think I had the time if things went sideways (usually happens with my projects it seems) but the instructions people have put out are really good and fairly easy. I might not have my mom try to root a device but it is surprisingly easy. I have not jumped over to the nighties yet and may do so in the future.
So my general summary is do it... Root... and get CM7 or the flavor of the month you will be surprised on how much you like it and wonder like I have why in the world you waited so long
Good luck
Chris
app2sd doesn't need a custom rom or anything like root to work 'n' its built in since froyo. anyway try the "pm setInstallLocation" process it might work even without root.
currently there are two different ways to root, with or without unlocking the bootloader.
anyway storage isn't necessarily a reason for choosing CM or whatever like MIUI/Modaco or anything.

At this point I don't think people should really mind simple questions at this point of time. the N1 section doesn't really have that much traffic like before when good questions would get buried under the how to root or best roms questions.
It's actually not so much about the forum traffic, but about the quality of answers. People get tired of answering the same things over and over, and eventually they stop. As long as there are enough knowledgeable people that still answer - it won't matter, but when enough of them stop answering - there won't be good answers to keep this forum trustworthy.

Instead of wasting your time and adding to your post count with wasteful information, why do you skip the thread and move along. You are not being helpful being the forums Dad. There are thousands of posts here and I'm not about to scour them for 2 simple questions that I have, which by the way I did go and look. There are follow up questions that I had as well, that some members, unlike you, have been very courteous in answering. I was wondering how long it would take you to post a useless post, since you seem to be the one bashing and scolding everyone here.

Trust me I wish this was the case. It leaves always files on the main memory and even though I really don't have that many applications the storage left is only 30mb. After a bit of browsing on the web on it, I get running out of space notifier too and I have done both the app2sd and the setinstall location.
Thank you for those who posted with useful info unlike some. Anyway, going back to the topic, I just ordered a class 10 card since mine are only 2 and 4. Did notice quite a few people mentioned that as a must. Now while reading on the CM7 rom, I did notice some saying they have nightlies but have failed to come up with what the heck is it. I guess you didn't read the FAQ after all, otherwise you would have known that all the "courteous members" of the forum that answered you, don't know a thing about A2SD - which wasn't mentioned anywhere in the thread - and all the space that CM7 helps you gain isn't nearly enough for most people with N1. Even using A2SD without Dalvik2SD flag is not enough for most people.
But since you insisted on calling the FAQ "wasteful info" and bashing me personally, instead of actually reading the required minimum - I'll move to other threads, and you'll get your help from others. If you'll find someone willing to help, that is.
The forum also has search for a reason.

Is there a ROM that breaks the 150mb /data/data barrier?

Are there any roms or other easy ways to increase the size of the partition /data/data on the Droid Incredible? To this day, all I really find are ways to save space in there. That's been covered - everything from Cachemate to not using certain apps. I want to know if there are any roms out there that use space from internal or other areas and reroute them so that /data/data shows more space. Any help would be appreciated.

Ask in the right forum.
There's a Q&A section. That's the place for, well, Q&A.
Why, developing one? Lol just kidding. But seriously, proper thread placement is beneficial for everyone. You'd get answers instead of people telling you to place this elsewhere, the devs don't get their forum crowded with off topic threads, the mods don't have to bother moving threads around, and I don't have to post explanations lol. Sorry if I came across as a ****, just trying to help out.

Try the application "Not Enough Space" in the Market. It will enable relocating contents from \data\data to emmc, cache, sd card or a custom partition. I have used since Froyo, and it was a prime motivator for rooting my Incredible.
