I have frf91 on a AT&T version of nexus one. I am trying to tether wirelessly but I can't because of a DNS issue. My computer (I've tried with a PC and a Mac) sees the network and can ping a IP but nothing requiring DNS. So I am pretty sure the problem is not a computer but the phone itself or the cell company. I'm not rooted and am using vodacom Tanzania for service. Internet works fine on the phone. Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Have you tried changing the DNS settings in the connection properties on the PC to use alternate DNS servers? (e.g: OpenDNS's servers)
Preferred DNS server address for Open DNS is:
208.67.222.222
Alternate DNS server address for Open DNS is:
208.67.220.220
Yes I've tried that and some other DNS numbers with same results. Thanks.

Randomly after weeks, I tried tether again and it works. Now every time I connect the ssid shows one number higher like "android ap (16)" on my win7 machine.

Sorry maybe it's already been asked many times but is there anyway I can changed the DNS server given by the Nexus One when I use wifi tethering?
I activate Wifi tethering, got an IP address from the Nexus One but it seems that the Nexus one foward all the DNS request to 4.2.2.2 and 8.8.8.8 (google servers)...
My carrier block the DNS request to all DNS servers except two dedicated servers on the network ... Is there any way I can edit a file or use some commands (maybe ADB) to force the Nexus to give me the two DNS server I need to get my wifi tethering working...
I tried to find in the topics but can't find the answer ...
Thanks for your help.
Nobody know?

Does your phone allow you to surf when you turn off tethering?
If yes - then it's not the phone to blame, since it uses all connectivity as it's provided by the carrier, but the computer connected to the phone - the computer is trying to access Google DNS servers by default. Look in your network settings.
Yes it's working when tethering is disabled... On my computer, DNS are set to "automatic" and I'm receiving a dns IP from my nexus... looks like the phone is forwarding to the google dns...

Hello everyone. I had a problem with my samsung captivate and my netgear wnr 2000 wifi hotspot. When I was using 2.1 eclair, it wasn't able to connect to my home wifi. Even now with me running 2.2, I STILL can't. I tried the all share method. It connected but nothing that requires internet worked. Browser, youtube, etc didn't work even when it said it was connected, and the bars of wifi are showing. Anyone know how to fix it? I am really frustrated with it saying "obtaining IP Address" everytime I'm trying to connect to it. I hate using 3G in my own household. Anyone have that same problem? Any solutions?

You also might want to check your router to see if it has a limit to how many connected devices it can have and also if you have a MAC address block on the router.
Using a password? If so try removing the password (temporarily) just to eliminate one thing out of the equation.
Also, does your router have one of those wps buttons that automatically sync with your device? If so have you tried that?
Another thought... I just glanced though your routers user guide and see an option called "Wireless card access setup". If enabled, this blocks all devices not on the "trusted" list. Make sure it's disabled (or add your phones mac address to the list)
Edit: popfan already covered my last point.

I had this exact problem, where it would just say "Obtaining IP Address" for about 30 seconds then say "Error" or something like that but only for my own wifi. I could connect to other wifi's fine.
Anyways, try deleting "bcm_supp.conf" using Root Explorer, reboot. Then go into Settings -> Wireless and network -> Wi-Fi Settings -> Menu key -> Advanced and check Use Static IP
Once you have that, open up command prompt on your computer and type in ipconfig /all. Then manually put in the IP you see on your command prompt to the corresponding slots on your phone.
P.S. For IP address, use the IP your router assigned to your phone. You will need to go into your router settings for that.
After that, try connecting again. Voila!
At least that fixed it for me.
Lastly, I'm not sure if these settings affect other password protected networks. Open networks work fine though.
Thanks for all the ideas! Ill keep you guys posted and ill make sure to try all the options. 'Cuz using 3G in your house is stupid

I'm going to try this method as well. You should as well if there happens to be a flaw in my method.

-Edit-
Okay, the method in the linked post works. I recommend using that method intead of mine.
Thanks every one and especially Holmes108. I managed to log into www.routerlogin.net and I added my phone`s MAC address to the list and now my wifi works!

Glad it worked out. Routers can be a pain sometimes.
Yah got that rite
I had to reset my router due to an error: none of my computers or phone could connect to the internet. But after the reset, I no longer had to add the mac address of my phone to the trusted list

I was setting up the TBH radio hack for enabling mobile hotspot, and having an issue I'm hoping someone can help with.
The hotspot works without issue using a Win 7 laptop to test internet connectivity (by using Firefox to check google and yahoo).
My newer Win 8 laptop I'm not so lucky. I can connect to the hotspot fine, but DNS resolution doesn't appear to work. The network connection in my system tray shows it connected with internet connectivity. I can browse to google from Firefox if I do it by IP address (which I fetched when I had laptop connected to home wireless), but I can't by name. I can't get to anything via DNS name. I tried removing Symantec Antivirus to see if that was contributing, and had the same result. I can't ping external hostnames either. The laptop has no issues when on home network.
Anyone have any ideas on why mobile hotspot DNS resolution wouldn't work with Win 8?
Thanks in advance for any help....
Have you tried forcing the DNS servers in the Win8 connection instead of letting them as auto? Try 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 (they are public DNS servers from Google https://developers.google.com/speed/public-dns/ )
I'm not able to connect to wifi at all with my One, even when I have excellent wifi strength. I thought I had a defective unit but I got another one and it still doesn't connect. I have no trouble connecting at all with my iPhone 4s, Nexus 7, or Samsung Galaxy S1. (When I run speed test with these I get about 7-10 Mbps download and about 10-15 Mbps upload) Is there anything I can do to fix this? (like an update or something) This is my last resort before I bring it back and use my old phone.
Have you changed your WiFi password recently?

Ok I fixed it. To anyone having problems with wifi, on your wifi settings click "show advanced options," change ip settings to static, and change the DNS 2 to 8.8.4.4

If I am not mistaken that 8.8.4.4 is a google DNS. Meaning you bypassed your providers DNS and are now using this one. This would indicate that there is a DNS conflict between you and your provider....and you basically went around the problem. Hey if it works it is all good I guess and of course I may be way of course in the response. If so then please feel free to refer to me as a dum dum
Edit: Let me re-phrase this a bit because it does not actually indicate a conflict. Apparently your wifi router is set to this google 8.8.4.4 DNS and not the DNS that your provider is using. Thus any device going through the wifi router must match this DNS setting to connect.
Many people on lets say XBOX do this to maybe help with lag and stuff especially if the google DNS server is closer to them than there Providers DNS server.. It is really no big deal in the grand scheme of things but it is not a universal fix as so stated in your reply. Hope this makes sense.
I'm having issues connecting to the 5mhz WiFi network while the 2.4 works perfectly fine on same router. Same thing at work... Laptops connect fine. Tried both stock and viper Rom and still nothing... It just doesn't even connect to the network... The pass was entered correctly.

No issues on 5GHz with my Linksys E3000's with dd-wrt firmware. Are you on the latest firmware from the manufacturer of your device?
Using ddwrt myself.. it's really weird cause even at work with their fancy routers.. it doesn't work nor at home... Maybe just defective antenna or something ? The 2.4 works fine.

Is it possible to set static IP on Chromecast or DHCP is the only option?
Can't you go into your router (or DNS) and set the IP based on the device's MAC address?

Yes, that's what I have already done but this still requires having DHPC server on the network, and my goal is to turn DHCP server off.
I'm looking to do this too. I have the Chromecast connected to a route in L2TP mode going through a VPN. All of my other Android devices can connect to the internet. The Chromecast will connect to the network. The PC and all devices can see it, but it won't connect to the internet. For some reason you can't even stream a tab when the Chromecast can't connect to the internet, even if the LAN is functioning fine.
I suspect the problem in internet connectivity is running L2TP instead of DHCP.
