Hello everyone. I had a problem with my samsung captivate and my netgear wnr 2000 wifi hotspot. When I was using 2.1 eclair, it wasn't able to connect to my home wifi. Even now with me running 2.2, I STILL can't. I tried the all share method. It connected but nothing that requires internet worked. Browser, youtube, etc didn't work even when it said it was connected, and the bars of wifi are showing. Anyone know how to fix it? I am really frustrated with it saying "obtaining IP Address" everytime I'm trying to connect to it. I hate using 3G in my own household. Anyone have that same problem? Any solutions?

You also might want to check your router to see if it has a limit to how many connected devices it can have and also if you have a MAC address block on the router.
Using a password? If so try removing the password (temporarily) just to eliminate one thing out of the equation.
Also, does your router have one of those wps buttons that automatically sync with your device? If so have you tried that?
Another thought... I just glanced though your routers user guide and see an option called "Wireless card access setup". If enabled, this blocks all devices not on the "trusted" list. Make sure it's disabled (or add your phones mac address to the list)
Edit: popfan already covered my last point.

I had this exact problem, where it would just say "Obtaining IP Address" for about 30 seconds then say "Error" or something like that but only for my own wifi. I could connect to other wifi's fine.
Anyways, try deleting "bcm_supp.conf" using Root Explorer, reboot. Then go into Settings -> Wireless and network -> Wi-Fi Settings -> Menu key -> Advanced and check Use Static IP
Once you have that, open up command prompt on your computer and type in ipconfig /all. Then manually put in the IP you see on your command prompt to the corresponding slots on your phone.
P.S. For IP address, use the IP your router assigned to your phone. You will need to go into your router settings for that.
After that, try connecting again. Voila!
At least that fixed it for me.
Lastly, I'm not sure if these settings affect other password protected networks. Open networks work fine though.
Thanks for all the ideas! Ill keep you guys posted and ill make sure to try all the options. 'Cuz using 3G in your house is stupid

I'm going to try this method as well. You should as well if there happens to be a flaw in my method.

-Edit-
Okay, the method in the linked post works. I recommend using that method intead of mine.
Thanks every one and especially Holmes108. I managed to log into www.routerlogin.net and I added my phone`s MAC address to the list and now my wifi works!

Glad it worked out. Routers can be a pain sometimes.
Yah got that rite
I had to reset my router due to an error: none of my computers or phone could connect to the internet. But after the reset, I no longer had to add the mac address of my phone to the trusted list

cant get my captivate to connect to my hidden network. I set up the wifi on the phone and the key with my network un-hidden and it connects immediately. but with my network hidden it says that the network is out of range. New to android my last phone WM 6.5 had a "this network is hidden" button to tick and worked just fine. cant find an option like that on my captivate.

If the router has MAC addresses restricted it will not have the new phone in the authorized list. In order for me to use the wifi network at my daughter's house I have to install my new phone's mac address into the router's mac table.
Frank
thx Frank but no its set for a wep key. when the router is un-hidden the IP and wep key work and i conect right way but when the SSID is hidden the phone cant find it and I cant figure out a way to tell the phone that its hidden.
That's weird my wifi is hidden with wep security and Mac address to allow and mine connects fine. I'm using a Linksys wrt110 router

just checked to make sure and yep mac filter is diabled so thats not it. its a linksys wrt54gs if that helps any
Try installing the HiddenSSID Enabler app form the market. People seem to get positive results.
Thx I'll try that and report late tonight

That did it thank you very much. Didnt realize that this was an android issue and not a captivate specific issue...again thank you

I have my wireless network simply set not to broadcast, so it doesn't show up when scanning for wifi. I clicked ADD A NETWORK, typed in the network name, username and password and there we go. Don't know if that would have worked for you.
no i tried just entering the ssid and key but it would never find it just keept saying that the network was unavaiable it would keep the settings but just couldnt find the router. but i downloaded the hidden ssid app and it works great now.
hmm
I just installed hiddenssid enabler and I am having an issue with not being able to connect at all.... I attempted to add the network manually first typing in the ssid and WPA2 key (copied and pasted to be sure i had the right key) and it says unable to find wireless network so I found this thread and installed the hiddenssid app from the marketplace when I type in the name of my network and click enable hidden SSID a dialog pops up and says WARN not found SSID 'nameOfNetwork' and I have tried several times typing it in to no avail any other suggestions?
Enable ur wifi then go into the hidden ssid app. Make sure you have the spacing and capitalization exactaly right for the ssid or it wont work
Yeah I did have my wifi enabled. when I enabled broadcasting on my router it immediately connected but this is not the solution I am looking for.... Not sure what else I can try I tried another wifi app wifi buddy couldn't get that to help either

only thing i can tell you is to check the capitalization when u enter the ssid into hiddenSSID i have to rember to capitalize mine or it wont find the router
No wifi just says obtaining ip address! My captivate did that once and I reset the data and it connected just fine but my streak 7 has no luck! Any advice on what to do?

Reboot the router first thing, it's possible that's the problem. Small home routers are pretty unreliable.
Otherwise, might make sure you don't have MAC filtering on and your DS7's mac address is entered (correctly).. Failing that, you might try switching encryption types around.
So far I've found no problems with wifi on mine on some 10 or so different AP's.
I did a reboot on the router first thing! Then I also cleared all devices from it and still nothing that's when I did the wipe all data on my s7 I did that by holding down the vol up and power and did the clear everything even user data its 100% back to the way I bought it. I have not rooted or anything on my s7 its always been factory.

Check your network settings and make sure it is not trying to pull a specific or static IP address or anything. Press Menu then select Advanced when in the Wi-Fi Settings screen.
try static?
try to give your DS7 a static IP on the DS7 within the subnet, mask & gateway of your WiFi
maybe its just not picking up the DHCP?
Delete the connection on your Streak 7 and then redo. If it's a secured connection, it's possible that you've entered the password incorrectly. Doesn't hurt to try.
Thanks all for the help I fixed it the next morning after posting this! I had to clear the devices on my router and then reboot and it connected just fine.. but thank you all for the help!

I have a custom ROM based on the official 2.3.5 ROM (3.12.405.1) and the HTC WiFi Hotspot application doesn't work. The app starts and wireless devices can associate with it and lease IP addresses via DHCP but they can't access the Internet. I think its a NAT problem in the application because I can resolve names from my PC as the phone is proxying the DNS lookups - i.e. open a command prompt on my PC and type 'nslookup www.google.com' and I get valid answers. If I try to access the Internet with the browser it fails.
I have downloaded android-wifi-tether and this works as long as the 'Routing Fix' is checked in the settings. I was hoping not to have to have this alternate WiFi Tether application and use the integrated one.
Just tested USB Tethering and the results are the same - i.e. PC gets an IP address and can resolve names but can't access the Internet. I assume this is something fundamental in the NAT/Routing being done by the phone?

Really weird... Sounds like your mobile data connection is down. (I'm sure you already checked that)
Flash some other ROM with same base and try.

I can access the Internet on the phone when its running so I know there is connectivity. As I say I think its something fundamental with the NAT/routing on the phone - I am not sure how to debug it further?
Andy
I am not sure why but this fixed it for me:

I assume with Orange the WiFi Hotspot App uses this 'Consumer Broadband' connection and not the default 'Orange Internet' connection. I was tempted to delete the 'Consumer Broadband' APN and see what happens, a job for another day though as I need to use it at the moment.

So, I had my router, wifi and mac filter set up, but then I started to use my medialink n-router for my computer on windows vista. So, I went through the set up and it connected, but it pretty much got rid of the old SSID and put in the new one instead. But my other computer on windows 7 (even after a restart) still detects the old network but can't connect to it. Any ideas? I really don't want to reset the router since it'll take off all the mac addresses in the filter (I think...) I've searched and searched with no avail...
Edit: the SSID is being broadcast, but it still says it can't connect
Can't you make a backup (of the router config) and then restart the whole thing? I know i can, and i have a ****ty router.

I'll try that. Apparently the network is "hidden" so I'll search and see what solutions appear
I've tried everything what I could find in the web, however nothing helped. What should I do? I'm using CM10, my router's IP is dynamic.
What should I do?
Thanks in advance

Restart router? Or maybe you have another device on fixed IP (I had similar problem with my iPad ) and router tries to assign this IP to your phone?

Rename your access point name.. I had same problem before, after change access point name in router, i can connect again..

The blame is from router. Once it happened to me. Try restart your router.
try to make it static..
I have had this problem on different ROMs occasionally.
Deleting the saved connection on your Phone, searching for the Network and typing the password again would solve my problem.
But for me the Router Restart or even WiFi off and back on (on the Router) has helped with this issue.
Tried to make it static, tried to restart my router a couple of times even tried to change the access point name in the router but nothing helped. All other android devices I have work normally..
Do you have 2 wifi networks with the same name?
Had this problem when my wifi network name at home had the same name as my gf's network at her house

EDIT:
Problem solved, updated the router's firmware
I have the same problem unfortunately, I'm on DMX 1.5 with KOB kernel, wifi worked flawlessly until yesterday, now it's stucked. I have tried roouter restarting/firmware updating, phone restarting, retype wifi password, but nothing helped. The other devices at home (android and bb) can connect though.
Try to restart your router. Commonly the blame is for router.

Next time turn off your router, wait few seconds and turn it on. It must work... i had the same problem few times. It is caused when your wi-fi router remmember your phone MAC address, and then, your phone is being dissconected without pressing "turn off wi-fi" on your phone. MAC address is still remmembered in your router and it wouldn't accept to remmember the same parameters from your device..

Well after a day, it does it again, I have tried to turn off the router for about 5-10 seconds, but it's the same. Maybe the problem is, the wifi router is a bit far from my room, and it disconnects wifi at a few spots, don't know how could I solve this, don't wanna reflash everyday.
Одг: Wifi stuck at "Obtaining IP adress"
How far? What is your singnal strenght?
Sent from my LG-P990 using xda app-developers app
The router is around 20-25meters away from my room, I usually get one or two bars (sensitivity set to -32dbm), but as I said it disconnects a few times, when I go to my terrace it always connects/disconnects in every 10 seconds. I'm planning to broadcast wifi off my computer, so it doesn't matter, I just don't know if it plays a role in this "obtaining IP address" problem, but I haven't had it before so it must be a ROM/kernel problem, I've reflashed it again with a different kernel, I'll see if it works, as it started with the using of this one (King of Birds kernel).
I have read a topic (can't find it now) that said it's a DHCP problem, and the device remembers the previously used IP's and wants to use that, and I should delete /data/misc/dhcp/dhcp-list file to get rid of this problem. However, I cannot get into "data" folder with Root Browser (with root permission of course), nor delete the file with Terminal Emulator, so I couldn't try it. Sorry if I wrote anything stupid, as I'm not into most of these technical things. Thanks for your help.
