Both are around the same price. I guess Milestone has a huge following as it is same as the "Droid" and lots of custom stuff, but XT701 is new.
So what do you guys reckon? will there be unofficial ROMS for XT701 in case Moto doesn't upgrade it?
To me, this is how its looking right now:
Milestone:
for
- Huge following and community, and supposedly 2.2 is due out soon for it
- Physical keyboard
- 900 / 2100 3G -> I will have 3G in rural areas
XT701
for
- slimmer than the Milestone
- Xenon flash and more camera features
- FM Radio with RDS
- 850 / 1900 / 2100 3G -> my phone will work on all providers in NZ
Things I am not sure about:
- CPU - ARM Cortex A8 600 MHz vs TI OMAP3430 600MHz processor
- Does the XT701 have a GPU?
- Will the XT701 get Froyo
Please help me make a decision!
You can look up the specs of both on gsmarena. I am not allowed to post links cause im new on this forum :S.
If you don't mind about physical keyboard, Milestone XT is better. But don't take XT701. you can find better spec XT720. The main difference is camera where XT701 got only 5MP but XT720 got 8MP camera.
Milestone XT is the latest model in Milestone series and I hope we're surely getting 2.2 update in time.
Don't be fooled by the advertising that the "Milestone is the same the Droid".
The devices are similar apart from the fact that one is CDMA and the other GSM. BUT, the bootloader of the Milestone is locked for some odd reason which Motorola hasn't clarified. So custom ROMS for the Droid will not work on it.....infact there are no real custom ROMS or big customisations for the Milestone!!!!
so your pros and cons would look like this;
Milestone:
for
- Huge following and community, and supposedly 2.2 is due out soon for it
- Physical keyboard
- 900 / 2100 3G -> I will have 3G in rural areas
XT701
for
- slimmer than the Milestone
- Xenon flash and more camera features
- FM Radio with RDS
- 850 / 1900 / 2100 3G -> my phone will work on all providers in NZ
(Note: I do not know if the XT701 or XT720 bootloader will be locked too but chances are they are)
However, there are some small mods in place, such as overclocking; I've succesfully overclocked my Milestone to 1GHz and its been running stable and unbelievably smooth since.
In the end, I think the choice comes down to: do you want custom ROMS?
If yes, then look elsewhere!!! If I had known the bootloader was locked I would have never bought the device!
If no, then its whether you want a keyboard or not. Personally I prefer a keyboard...even if its not the best! Just makes life that little bit easier.
Quick ones:
I have XT701. It's a pretty mean machine. Love using it.
1) Did have a little lag until used "milestone overclock" to speed it up
2) Camera can be upgraded to 8MP easily
3) You can root it EASILY using the universal Androot app
4) I think it's closer to the Milestone stock than other people think (but that's just my opinion)
5) I've not know any app from the market to crash it (lots of other owners of different phones seem to be constantly complaining about this)
I would choose the one that fits your needs. If you need a QWERTY keypad, then the Milestone is an easy choice.
BTW, it's a known fact that the Milestone's bootloader is locked. There are still lots of really good and fast ROMs for it, including MIUI and the speedy 2.2.1 GOT and tons of customization so please ignore the misinformation. The XT702/701 also has a locked bootloader, as does the Droid 2.
The CPUs in both the XT701/702 are similar to the Milestone, so speed differences will be negligible.
Erm, dudes, this topic is nearly half a year old. Why reply?
- CPU - ARM Cortex A8 600 MHz vs TI OMAP3430 600MHz processor
the same cpu- Does the XT701 have a GPU?
- Will the XT701 get Froyo
No doubt Milestone will update to Froyo first

i work for telus and our htc rep told us that the planed launch date is august 14th. the look is a bit different and the battery has grown to 1440 mAh
my question to all of you xda pros is this: will the current roms and apps work for the cdma device just as they do for the gsm version.
i can't wait to start flashing and find out for myself
Apparently the Telus version also has more RAM (256 instead of 192). So between the and it being CDMA I am also really interested if the current ROMs will be compatible.
sure its the diamond and not the pro?
I've seen a couple reports, like the one here that list the Telus verion as having expanded RAM. They may or may not still be accurate, but most of them reference Telus press releases.
Here you go here are the specs for the TELUS CDMA:

When we told you that the CDMA Diamond was going to hit Telus in Canada, our greatest fear is that it would drop WiFi support like the original Touch did. Glory be, that's not the case, WiFi stays. Telus has finally posted up the specs on the their version of the Touch Diamond and we are well pleased:
101mm x 51mm x 14mm
EVDO Rev A
WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0
Qualcomm MSM 7510A Processor running at 528MHz
256 ROM, 256 RAM, 4 Gigs internal (no expansion)
Includes Telus Navigator software and Opera 9.5 for the broswer
Camera is still 3.2mp, screen is still 640x480
The battery gets a big bump: it's 1340 mAh
All in all, the processor and RAM look like they're hefty enough to handle TouchFLO 3D, EVDO REV A + WiFi look like this thing will be speedtastic, and the battery is big enough to handle it all. Sprint, Verizon: get this on your network ASAP. Telus: ditto.
At the moment there are known several 'versions' of the Motorola Droid 3...
My question is: Which version is the best for using in Europe / The Netherlands?
I'm using the Vodafone network here in The Netherlands and I want to buy the best version of this device,
which is fully working and compatible with the HSDPA-network out here, which is 14.4Mbps (at the moment)
So which version is best:
1. Motorola XT883, for sale in China
At the moment there is no information about supported networks, standbytime, prices or (sim)locks...
2. Motorola Droid 3, for sale in the USA with supported networks:
WCDMA 850/1900/2100, CDMA 800/1900, GSM 850/900/1800/1900
HSDPA 10.2 Mbps (Category 9/10), CDMA EV-DO Release A, EDGE Class 12, GPRS Class 12, HSUPA 5.76 Mbps
Standbytime is 300 hours and you can call 550 minutes with it.
Disadvantages of this version:
- It is known that it has got a Verizon-provider(sim)lock
- It supports HSDPA speeds up to 10.2Mbps
- It has got several Verizon bloatware on board
- It has got several Verizon logo's on the outside of the device
Advantage of this version:
- The price, which is only $429,00 if I'm correct
(an unlockcode will cost you about $30 via eBay)
- The (XDA)community, which is probably the best for this version
3. Motorola XT860 4G, for sale in Canada with supported networks:
WCDMA 850/1900/2100, GSM 850/900/1800/1900
HSDPA 14.4 Mbps (Category 9/10), EDGE Class 12, GPRS Class 12, HSUPA 5.76 Mbps
Standbytime is 240 hours and you can call 580 minutes with it.
What is not known about this version at the moment:
- Will this version have a providerlock / simlock?
- Will this version have providerbloatware just like the Droid 3?
- Price for only the phone, without a contract, is unknown?
Advantages of this version:
- It supports HSDPA speeds up to 14.4Mbps
- It hasn't got several logo's of the provider on the outside of the device!
My own conclusion
At the moment I thinks the Motorola XT860 4G is the best option...
And I'm still waiting for the Motorola XT883 specifications offcourse.. What do you think? Thanks in advance!
Several topics on XDA / Droidforums about using the Droid 3 outside the USA:
-Droid 3 in GSM?
-Droid 3 sim unlock discussion
-Droid 3 unlockable
-Droid 3 Verizon vs. Unlocked vs. China version..?
Wonderful topic/questions, and the answers interest me also, for the same Vodafone network, also in Europe.
I am trying to purchase the Droid 3 from USA, at this time.
Also, from where can we buy D3/Milestone 3 in Europe?
The most important network is WCDMA. It will show for you with H or 3.5G mark.
(HSDPA is showing as 3G Mark.
EGPRS is showing as E or 2G
and GPRS is showing as G or 2G.)
If phone is equipped with it, it should work everywhere in Europe. I am planning also this phone. And Verizon brand marks looks good..
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA Premium App
and where from can we buy it? on verizon they said it can be bought only with a 2years contract...
You can buy it without a contract as well from verizon for $459. I just bought it this weekend.
Unfortunatelly, they did not allow a friend of mine to do so..
So any other online store which sends it to europe?
Even if you can buy it, how do you intend to handle SIM unlocking? AFAICS, third party codes are not yet confirmed to work.
The only chance I see right now is to buy on ebay and to convince the seller to obtain the codes from Verizon for you.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1172521
http://cgi.ebay.com/Unlock-Code-Ver...500?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2c5df4bddc
or possibly TURBO SIM?
or perhaps buy it directly from Moto-store, if i were to be in the USA
http://www.store.motorola.com/Motor...dtextbin,subjectbin,color_map,price,size_name
I didn't realize there is already a confirmed third party unlock. Thank you!
its also in the first post of this topic
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-3/158398-droid-3-sim-unlock-discussion.html
So, any of the Canadian or USA version will work fine in Europe? (being unlocked, of course) ?
Just ordered the phone from Motorola store you mentioned above. Have it shipped to Germany with borderlinx. Should work...
Why do you doubt it could work? UMTS band 2100 is good enough for Europe, at least Germany, but I think for most other countries as well. Just the same as with D2G.
I should not choose for the Droid 3 if I were me =p
The disadvantages have I mentioned in the first post.
Bloatware, logo's on the phone, not the best HSDPA speeds..
Okay it will work in Europe, but it's not the 'best version' I think..
HSDPA speeds, OK, technically you are right, this is a real disadvantage -- however I doubt I'd really feel the difference, for many reasons ...
Regarding the bloatware, I will get rid of it with another launcher, like Launcher Pro. Just as with D2G.
And the logo is unobtrusive, at least for me.
Of course it is not the 'best version' -- but available NOW.
@CLB-NL, and what do you chose for Europe? Wait for milestone 3 launched for Eu especially?
and what if i buy the D3 without contract? than it should be sim-unlocked?
Any information regarding the Canada version? like..price..sim- blocked??
Something buying a Milestone 2 taught me, is that the US variant (Droid) will get about eleven thousand times more dev support here.
@ rweb: with installing another launcher you still have got the bloatware!
We have to wait for rootacces and then we can delete that crap!
@ bogdan_wrc: personally I think the XT860 4G is the best version to use at the moment of writing this. Offcourse we have to wait for some answers. Simlock, bloatware, price and so on, but it's just my opinion... And we have to wait for the official Milestone XT883 specs also!
@ Sjael: the support is an advantage of the Droid 3, that's true!

But I do not see it anymore, so I don't mind. It may waste some resources, but I don't think this is very much. At least it works out this way on my D2G, and I asume it we be the same with D3.
It will probably work the same =)
And with the standard launcher you also can 'hide' it.
Just create a Verizon folder with all the bloatware apps and don't show / use it.

when i try to buy one, it will only let me use a US address for billing. do borderlinx offer assisted purchasing as well, or am i the only one experiencing this?
trying to order a droid 3 off the US site btw, not a canadian version
I'm living in Korea right now.
SK telecom has already released their LTE snapdragon a couple of weeks ago.
I heard rumors that KT was to release their 3g model, but what I had found out is that it's the LTE snapdragon model with 3g enabled.
This is very disappointing news to me as I expected the exynos processor from KT.
Now a few questions:
1. I've heard that snapdragon vs exynos difference on paper looks massive, but user experience is about the same, is this true?
2. Where are the reputable sellers for gnote 3g model (I heard amazon and handtech)
3. For those users that bought it overseas.. how are you handling no warranty? Korea samsung provides great warranty (even if you break the phone on accident) they'll replace it for free. I'm very scared that one day the galaxy note 3g version might just die and i'll be out of luck.
Thanks for reading... so excited to pull the trigger..

1) According to Engadget it's true - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20440114&postcount=9
2) I'd probably get it from Amazon but if you're in Korea already you should have other options. Have you considered contacting Samsung in Korea?
3) Good question, if there is a presence in your country for the source you purchased it from, I've heard there should be coverage but I'd like to know for sure before ordering..
Let us know what you decide,

That link actually proves how unreliable the Snapdragon is...
The Snapdragon had Quadrant scores of anywhere from 2100-3300 which is EXTREMELY unstable...
My old S2 got consistant Quadrant scores of 3600-3700 on Stock

1) It's actually the opposite. On paper, the Snapdragon looks amazing with it's 1.5ghz clock speed compared to the Exynos 1.4ghz, but the Snapdragon is very unreliable.
Quadrant Score that vary within the thousands usually mean that occasional or frequent lag on the homescreen are visible. Thus was the case with the AT&T ****rocket (The LTE S2)
2) Handtec, Clove, Amazon are all good places
3) The OG Note works with HSPA+ and will most likely have more sales than the LT**** note. Just look at the int'l S2 and compare those forums to the Skyrocket forums. It's like 50 devs versus 2-5 devs in the ****rocket forums.

At the source link http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/11/samsung-galaxy-s-ii-skyrocket-review/ the chart is better formatted showing different devices (not instances) for Galaxy S II Skyrocket ; AT&T Galaxy S II ; T-Mobile Galaxy S II ; HTC Vivid Benchmarks
"Another wild card in the Skyrocket's performance is the 1.5GHz Qualcomm APQ8060 (Snapdragon S3) CPU and accompanying Adreno 220 GPU, the same SoC setup as we saw on T-Mo's flavor. How does it hold up against the almighty Exynos processor found in so many of the other members of the Galaxy S II family? Pretty well, actually. While we've had a strong admiration for the processing prowess of Samsung's homegrown silicon, the Skyrocket's chip isn't anywhere close to a slouch either. In fact, unless you're paying close attention, you probably won't even notice a difference at all. The Qualcomm-powered device handled itself well throughout our menial myriad of tasks and didn't skip a beat.
The Skyrocket booted up in 25 seconds and was incredibly responsive from that time forward. Not once did the phone crash during our graphics-intensive activities, nor did it hiccup at any point in our multitasking. Animations were smooth as butter, as was the touch responsiveness."
In Korea, cell phone plans get a discount depending on the plan. The higher then plan, the higher the discount.
So just guestimating, if I get one of the Korean LTE models, I will be able to save $200-$400 depending on the plan vs getting the 3g european model.
So it begs the options:
Pay $200-$400: exynos + awesome xda developer support, 3g unlimited
Save $200-$400: qualcom, small if not no dev support, 4g LTE capped

Depends on your budget & what you want to do with it now? There will likely be more dev support if AT&T announce their LTE version in a few weeks. I'm trying to hold out for more info on AT&Ts LTE version as it should be more future-proof & by this month's end I should be in an LTE market but I'd rather not wait until April if that's really what they would announce soon. You have options now & don't have to wait!
How are the speeds of each in Korea & how often are you on Wi-Fi & all mobile data would be capped at what?

Unfortunately korean models are different than usa models because of firmware. I know this first hand as i own the korean galaxy tab 10.1 and failed to install custom roms as well as other korean gtab owners.
As for the speed ill get back to you tomorrow. My coworker has an lte phone so i can get someanswers for you.
I want to get the note with ATT after I leave verizon (no point in staying if I can't keep unlimited when I upgrade). I want to know that if I install roms for the I7000 or whatever (international version, right?) will I run into any problems? Is there any differentiation between the att version of the note and the international one? And if so, how can I weed out the development for the att note?
Also curious, if I can install international roms on the ATT version, will I retain my lte?
Different phones. Use the AT&T Note thread for information.

Different hardware entirely. Either buy the ATT note and checkout the ATT note forum, or do what I did and buy the international note (unlocked) and use on AT&T network (in which case this is the correct forum). But you can't mix.

I have been doing a ton of research on the Note, so this is one of the few questions I can answer here. Not all of them...but most. Since I am still new here I am unable to add links.
The Samsung Galaxy Note N7000 (International) has a a dual-core 1.4 GHz Exynos processor. Externally, it has a physical "home" button and two touch-sensitive buttons. It also has a built in radio.
The Samsung Galaxy Note SGH-I717 (US & Canada) has a Qualcomm MSM8660 Snapdragon with a dual-core 1.5 GHz Scorpion CPU and an Adreno 220 GPU. It has four touch-sensitive buttons instead of two. It can do LTE.
Looking at that you might think that the I717 is just better all around. This -apparently - is incorrect. In the bench marked tests I saw with a Galaxy Note with Exynos VS. the Galaxy Note with Snapdragon, the Exynos based one beat Snapdragon performance wise.
Galaxy Note with Exynos
GLBenchmark 2.1 Egypt High: 2827 Frames (25.0 Fps)
GLBenchmark 2.1 Egypt Standard: 3012 Frames (26.7 Fps)
Galaxy Note with Snapdragon
GLBenchmark 2.1 Egypt High : 1014 Frames (9.0 Fps)
GLBenchmark 2.1 Egypt Standard : 2425 Frames (21.5 Fps)
The site I found this from is called "Galaxy Tabs" from a a Feb 6, 2012 post.
Which leaves the question - Why would Samsung use a less hefty chip in the US & Canada version. The reason I have found is that the Exynos processor can't do LTE. Then again - weather all this is good or not depend on preferences and pattern of use.
------------------
So there you have it. I should mention though that (I presume) you did a terrible job searching. Not only did I find a post here from 28th February 2012 Called i717 vs GT N7000, but I also found alot of information from -wait for it- Wikipedia. Just FYI.
On the upside though - most of the stuff I mentioned I did from memory.
YAY research!
The att i717 has lte. If u using internet alot and your area has lte. Its better to use the att gnote. U can always overclock tge i717gnote to make tge clock faster.. After overclock there's no lag issues and it runs super smooth. But if u want more custom roms abd faster offical update. Buy the international gnote. Either way u cant go wrong. I chose attgnote cos tge lte and i overclock my note. It runs super smooth and super fast downloads cos tge lte!!

So our Droid Turbos have quad core Snapdragon 805s clocked at 2.7 ghz. Newer phones like the S7 and Axon 7 have 820s clocked at 2.15 ghz. Does anyone know why this is considered an upgrade, or is this just another case of OEMs doing whatever they want because the average consumer is too ignorant to care?

Some of the new CPUs are octo-cores instead of quad core, so 8 x 2.15 would be better than 4 x 2.7.
Also, last year's Snapdragon 810 overheated tremendously and for protection, in real life got throttled down to much slower speeds than what Qualcomm claimed. So, with the 820 Qualcomm is being more realistic. (I'm not mentioning our 805, just the current and last year's)
Yet, due to increased effeciancy, the 820 is 54% faster in benchmark scores than the 810.
The new 14nm Snapdragon 820 has a completely different architecture to its predecessor, the 810. It’s comprised of the X12 LTE modem, Kryo CPU, Adreno 530 GPU, Hexagon DSP, and Spectra ISP.
The 64-bit Kryta CPU is one of the bigger changes and will reportedly offer twice the performance of the 810.

The 64-bit Kryta CPU is one of the bigger changes and will reportedly offer twice the performance of the 810.

The 820s are quad core, so that can't be it. I guess it's just the different architecture. Man, are those Axon 7s tempting. It's got all the right bands to run on Verizon and an unlocked bootloader upon request. I have no legitimate reason to get a new phone right now...but I wish I did.

I just wish it had Qi wireless...
Also for you a Verizon user, even though it has Verizon's and Sprint's bands supposedly Verizon has not yet "approved" it on the network yet? I'm not sure how that works. Is the "approval" process for new SIM cards? But if you stick an already activated SIM card in, will it still work?
ZTE is asking nicely and hoping Verizon will cooperate.

I've done some reading and it seems like the phone mostly works on Verizon, with a few issues that require a reboot to solve. Obviously, things like VoLTE and mms over Wi-Fi don't work, but that doesn't bother me. But yeah, I'd have to re use my activated SIM.
Also, I noticed that on GSM arena it said that the phone had both the same CDMA bands as the Turbo, but I found another site (signal checker or something like that) that said it only had one of them. I'm not sure which is more reliable.
