Advice for what ROM would work best - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario Software Upgrading

i have an old HTC 8125 (G4 from what i understand based on the threads here) that i'm looking to use as an XBMC remote and nothing else. No phone or anything of that like is needed or enabled. The remote app needs a WiFi connection to work, which normally shouldnt be an issue. However, the default WM5 doesnt support WPA2 + AES. After googling this issue i read that it is possible to get this support via WM6.
Am i way off base here or am i on the right track? Also if i am on the right track what would be the ideal ROM to use for something like this?
I'm sure obvious answers would be to change the WPA2/AES on the router but that snowballs into other issues for me, so trying this route first may actually be faster.
Thanks in advance

Ham3r's H3r5 is a WM 6.1 with good apps but no fancy home screen. It works with WPA2 and AES: that's what I use at home. You can add a home screen but it sounds like you want something simple.

WM5 WiFi

Hi guys and girls.
I finally plucked up courage to install WM5 and suprisingly, it worked like a charm! not one single problem
There is one cherry on the top that would be very nice if anyone can help.
On the today screen there is a nice little bluetooth icon in the bottom right hand corner; is there any way to get a wifi icon next to it instead if having to go into start > Settings > connections > WLAN to turn it on?
Appreciate any suggestions offered.
Cheers
J
can someone please send me the orginal wirelessmgr.exe file? i tried to load the wirelessmgr.exe from the universal and now i cant turn wireless on or off
Codiac, I have taken a hotkey (camera, I don't use that much anyway, but any key would do) and mapped that to WLAN_MAN. Works very nicely, but I hope there will be a fix for the dissappearing WLAN (and BT, even though that doesn't matter that much to me since I never turn off the unit when I'm using anything BT) in the near future.
I never thought of that works spot on now
Must remember in future to engage brain before fingers :?
Cheers Mastiff

I added the program into O2plus apps tab

Codiac... how did you get the bluetooth icon on the Today screen? I just upgraded to Mamaich's Patch 5 but I don't have a bluetooth icon
me too..i can't see the bt icon and sometimes i quicly need of it..how can i show it?
Read the Wiki about missing files, patches number 1: http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=BA_WM5_Patches_ChangeLog
This is wierd?!?
After I did the upgrade the nice little BT icon was on the today screen, never bothered with it because BT is useless. Read these posts and had a look to see if I could work out how it got there and it has dissapeared?!?
The only thing I can think of is that I accidentally uninstalled one of the patches downloaded from wiki.
ill try and get it back on and let you know how I did it
Cheers

OOPs, sorry should have read Mastiffs post properly first
Mastiff is right, you need to install ba_wm5_fix_v1
Cheers

Well I've installed the BA_wm5 patch, but still have wifi problems. On 2003 my BA used to turn on wifi every time i turned on the unit, great as i have wifi at home and at work, now it always defaults to off and I have to switch it on every time I've turned off my BA. It's driving me nuts as I use email via wifi at work all day. Is there any way to get the wifi always on? Please....?
That's what I've been *****in' about for more than a week now...
Surely there's a way to default wifi to on, here's hoping somebody works it out before i downgrade to 2003.
i douwngraded to wm2003se..wifi on wm5 don't work at all..dosn't connect on my AP (on wm2003se is very fast)..so..because i need it i'll wait a more stable version..perhaps backlight regolation will be fixed
Backlight regulation was fixed more than a week ago! And I don't really know why you have WiFi problems, I have only one problem, that it defaults to off.

The default to off is the problem. I use my BA for work only. At home I use my wifi network to access work schedule appointments, and when in the office I use their wifi hotspot. At present i am having to tun on wifi realistically around a hundred times a day to update my joblist.
Is there a way to add any sort of utility to startup to turn it on at power on maybe?
I've tried everything to make my WiFi work but no luck.
However, I think I'll hold on because I really like WM5. I've ran through all the registry setting but nothing I've tried so far has made a difference. Enev tried downgrading the encryption settings on my MIMO. Furthermore, when I take off SSID broadcast, my BA seems to be able to see the AP but still fails to connect.
It's really annoying because I like to synchronize Avantgo over WiFi and most importantly use my BA when I'm in the bathroom doing you know what. Somebody please help!
Hey Mastiff, what security settings have you got enabled on your Access Point?

Cytrax, did you install activesync 4 to upgrade your rom? You can't sync by wifi on activesync 4 at all, they've removed the option from the program!
cytrax, I have 64 kbit WEP and MAC access control since the 128 kbit WEP was slow to access with another CE unit I have.
Thanks for that info, mastiff.
OK, this is wierd! At this particular point, WiFi works on my BA. However, it only works when I'm at work. The settings configured on Work AP is very similar to what I've got at home. The only difference is I use Netgear MIMO at home while Buffulo Airstation is deployed at work. This is really freaking me out (well, not exactly, but it's annoying).
I also tried with an old Belkin AP last night but didn't get any luck. I think I'm going to try 64bit WEP once I reach home. Watch this space!

Summiter...or anyone else helpful

I know I am probably the millionth person to ask for help but here goes. I installed the 2.17 ROM on my Cingular 8125 (yes I CID unlocked). I have seen others post that LEAP authentication is included in the 2.17. Perhaps I am missing something but I don't see it. I am trying to connect to a server that authenticates with LEAP (this uses a dynamic WEP). Is there any ROM update out there that has LEAP or is LEAP only a Cisco technology? I appreciate all the work you guys do!

Funny you mention that - I was just cracking open some of the cab files in the latest ROM and one of them appears to disable LEAP. Let me look into this more and get back to you. I don't use LEAP, so if I find something to try you'll have to let me know how it works out.
Leap?
What the hell is LEAP? or Dynamic WEP? Sounds like a Cisco proprietary wireless thing, I'm more into things like WPA w/ Radius Authentication, or WPA Pre Shared Key (PSK) for simple users. Before that, WEP 128 w/ MAC filtering as well on a private subnet then you'd vpn into the main network.
I'm not sure about any of the other ROMs, but I'm on the 2.17 / 2.23 AKU2.2 ROM that Summiter put out last Friday, and when I go into the Wireless Lan settings, there is a tab called "LEAP". I don't have anything to test that it works, but it looks like the option is there. Hope this helps in some way.
I am running Summiters 2.17 w/ CF2,AD2P,etc. and I also have a LEAP tab in my wifi settings. Likewise, I have no hardware to test if it works, but it's there.
Thanks for the feedback. I see no such tab. Perhaps I installed something incorrectly.
I recently updated my ROM to the custom AKU 2.2 that summiter released. I now have a LEAP tab in my "Wireless LAN" options. I am able to connect to the internet using the LEAP option. However, though the phone says I am connected via WiFi, I am unable to browse using Internet Explorer. I keep receiving an error message that says "Connection was lost" when clearly my connection is stable. Also, I get the same message when I try to connect to anything via WiFi (not just a LEAP authenticated server). Pehaps this goes back the the cab file issue summiter mentioned. Is anyone else experienceing WiFi issues with the new ROM?

MDA III VPN problems

Hi there!
I have a t-mobile mda III for two months. It had the original latest rom released by t-mobile (TMUK 1.42 1.12 1.13.00). I tried to connect to my university's network with wlan, but i have to connect there by VPN too (Connections->My work network->VPN). It worked really good without any problem. But I downloaded the Helmi's wm5.0 rom and i upgraded it. My phone didn't work, so i downgraded back the official TMUK rom, but since that i can't connect to VPN. Everything else is okwith the pda, but i can't use the internet in the university (that connects to the network, but i can't use it without VPN). I think the upgrade and downgrade deleted or changed something in registry or something, i don't know, so please help me!!!!
Really thanks!
It won't be the registry, as the hard resets during the upgrade/downgrade should zap the registry.
VPN has a million things that can go wrong. Access to the server logs would likely point you in the correct direction. I actually gave up on the ipsec/l2tp implementation and switched to using OpenVPN. Far easier to set up, but probably not much use to you as you are limited to what the uni has.
Really thanks for OpenVPN, but i can't use this. I don't know how to use this exactly. In the uni is PPTP vpn, not IPSec, so could you give me some advice about programs to use it.
THX
Personally, I use a Linux server and this page (and others on the site) has been invaluable:
http://www.jacco2.dds.nl/networking/openswan-pocketpc.html
The built-in client on the PPC supports L2TP/IPsec and PPTP. OpenVPN is completely different and incompatible with either. This page contains info on all of the varieties of VPN:
http://www.natecarlson.com/linux/linux-vpn.php
As you are using PPTP, you should be able to follow guidelines for OpenSWAN, as I believe it supports PPTP. The first link I posted has info for the pocket pc.
These pages should help you out somewhat. I'd recommend setting it up on a desktop first as you will be able to see the client logs. Once you get it working, you may have figured out something specific to your university that you need to set.

how to get gps working on wm6 side

hi! i am new at the forum and i have been looking how to get my shift fully operable. i have also liberated the wm6 side so i have now a full wm operative sistem. but when i have tried to connect to the built-in gps with google maps, it doesn't give me any signal, it doesn't get any satellite. i don't know how to configure the gps to have it working, i don't even know what's the com port of the gps neither the baud rate of it, so i cant get it working. do someone know how to fix that problem? is there any program or something that brings functionality to gps?
thanks for the help!
you need to flash any rom from this forum. Liberating is not enough.
And you need to applys HardSPL first.
any side effects?
Hi, thanks for the answer. i have been looking for "cooked roms" and i've found some ones. but i am not quite sure of doing the process of hard-spl and rom flashing... I wondered if doing this would eliminate some functions of the shift, like mobile internet sharing with vista or backlight luminance level misfunction... shared functions, for short. do you know if that is possible?
thanks for the help!

NOKIA to HTC newbie questions

Hi Guys,
I am coming from Symbian to Windows Mobile. I have a HTC Fuze and can't seem to figure a few things out.
1. In Nokia (Symbian) you can setup your email and other data services to use your home wi-fi when you are in home. When you are outside, it will use 3G/GPRS etc. automatically (once preferred access points are setup). I can't figure this out with HTC FUZE. Everytime I have to turn on and off the Wi-FI Connection (Connection Manager -> wi-fi ON or OFF). if I leave it on, it keeps popping up with networks that it finds. If I leave it Off, it doesn't use wi-fi to retrieve emails and other things when am at home. I am sure this should be easy... Help !!!
2. When I set my phone in Vibrate mode, it doesn't even play music through headphones. I have to set it "ON" mode for it to even play music. This is annoying. At work, I want the phone to be in vibrate mode but still listen to music through head phone every now and then and not worry about my phone ringing. Is there a simple fix? Am I missing something??
3. When the phone is in Vibrate mode, I would like it to vibrate for incoming emails. it does not do that.
4. What is the best recommended "TODAY" Screen plug-in/program for wm 6.5 other than the titanium one?
I am using NATF's Win 6.5 latest ROM.
I appreciate all your help.
Best,

1) I think you can go to Settings>personal>Sounds&Notifications and turn off the found new network notifications on the notifications tab (you also may be able to settings>wifi and change whether it scans or not, scanning seems like it would drain the battery)
2) The volume screen usually (depends on rom) has two tabs, one for sounds, one for ringer, so you could have sounds but vibe instead of ringer. Other than some 3rd party service that switches the volume settings based on the headphone port, i think that's about as good as it gets.
3) In that same settings>personal>sounds menu, you can change the new email notification to vibrate or sound and vibrate or whatever. it has to include vibrate in that setting though to vibrate ever.
4) I like the old-school HTC Home, or similarly SPB PocketPlus or SPB Diary. If you're looking for something fancier, lots of people use the Touchflo 3d (which can work in 6.5) or SPB Mobile Shell (there's a demo of version 3 on their website)
Hope I helped some, I know the windows mobile limitations can be annoying, but they're pretty minor overall (imho). All things considered, I've been a big fan for years, you just need to use a lot of 3rd party apps and tools.
Good luck, finding XDA was probably the best thing I ever did for my WinMo phone, hope you have the same experience.
Thank you very much for your reply. I can't seem to find the setting that you mention for turning off wireless scanning. Is this because of the ROM?
Also, if I have both Data Connection and Wi-Fi connection enabled, and say for example run Opera, how do you know which connection it is using? How do we change/specify the connection that opera uses? I am just using Opera as an example... bigger question is emails.

Hmm, I think I may have made that setting up
As long as your email account is set to use your Internet Connection (versus Work Connection), which should always be the default, and when you first connected to your wifi, it should have asked something like "This networks connects to: <radio buttons> The Internet, Work Network". As long as everything is "The Internet" you should be good. I don't know how to double check what connection it is actually using except looking at the activity light on your access point, but it should always use wifi over cellular data if wifi is available.
As far as the scanning / battery life, the performance slider in wifi was all i could find. I just use the Comm Manager to toggle wifi as needed, but admittedly I don't use it alot. I could see it being annoying.
So the nokia would know when you were by certain wifi spots and connect, without killing the battery life completely by having wifi on 24/7? That's pretty sweet...
I wonder if it just low power scans Wifi AP's every 5 min or so, maybe someone could make a similar WinMo Service?
I know this is way off topic for this thread, but if anyone has a more raphael specific programming guide, I'd appreciate a link.
I'm taking a look at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa457716.aspx
to see how hard programming is.
Both the headphone thing and the wireless thing would be nice to have as features. I'll see what I can do, but I've never developed for WinMo before, so absolutely no promises on anything =)
Thanks again, Friend.
You are right. I am not sure what happens in Nokia whether it does a low power scan or something... but when you turn off "Wireless scanning" in Nokia, it doesn't aggressively pop up available networks... thats all.
The way I used to do this in Nokia is through preferred access points. You would setup your wifi as your preferred and then the secondary access point would be AT&T network. Whether I use profimail (email client) or fring (chat voip client) they all had such a setting and somehow used wi-fi when I am at home without me doing anything.
BTW, the battery life did suck on my N95 8GB HTC so far has given me way better battery life than the Nokia.
For now, I will leave my WiFi On and see what happens.
The headphone thing is bizarre... I cannot adjust the phone volume only (1st slider bar on that screen) without adjusting the ringer volume. They move together on that screen. I am now in doubt of the ROM... so may be I will try just the plain vanilla Da_G ROM.
I need one general advice - For a newbie like me to winmo who is learning the basics of winmo, should I stay with stable, established ROMs than going to winmo 6.5 right now? should I go back to winmo 6.0? what do you think? Can you suggest a good ROM? I don't need/care to use the TF3D.
I get a lot of emails with attachments and one of the MAIN reason I came to HTC was the ability to edit/read/create Office documents. I will be happy if I can simply tune my HTC to be a good business user phone.
I appreciate your replies. Thanks much!!

As far as that goes, I've only used 6.5 for a few days, the deal breaker for me was SPB Diary not working (and SBSH Breeze, i tried both, they do the same thing). I NEED them for getting work done. For some reason it doesn't pull calendar data in 6.5, so I've always used 6.1 ROMS.
I'm actually recently back on EnergyRom2.0 from 4/16/09 (the version without TF3D is my favorite ROM ever, i think) but am tempted to tryout the Gen.Y R3 rom, which is a much newer 6.1 that's supposed to be stable, it's built off his popular HTC Diamond ROM and has the newer goodies like wifi data sharing built in. (i think)
Monx's ROMeos is on his site, you have to donate to get download access, but he has some very nice, fast, stable WM6.1 roms I've used before also.
I think at this point, at least with WM6.1, most of the established roms are fast and stable, it comes down to what you like bundled with it, and what looks good to you.
If you haven't seen it, I'd check out www.blownfuze.org, he talks more about 6.5 roms, and a LOT of other essentials for your phone. (in a very entertaining fashion)
