So Im out on my vacation and i cant get no signal. Now my friend has verizon and shes fine. Now if i turn roaming to automatic what will that actually do. I will connect to verizon since ther're also cdma or what. And also do i need to call sprint to set up roaming? Can somebody explain that to me pls.

it'll roam on verizon just fine. Chances are your plan doesn't charge you for roaming anyway (I don't think any of the data plans charge for roaming).

What is roaming? I looked at some other posts, but all of them are outside of the State. I went on a three day vacation to Iowa and I was on roaming. I thought roaming was when you left the US? Please help me im quite confused and never dealt with this. Im also worried because ill be going to wisconsin later today for another three days and I DO NOT want to be without data. Thanks
Roaming is using another carriers towers for signal. If your phone cannot get a signal from your carrier it will connect to another carriers tower to get signal.
AS long as you are on your OWN carriers towers depending on your data plan it could be nation wide (best to check this)
As long as you are on your OWN carrier network, wherever you are you can make local calls, as that becomes your local network. eg: I live in Canada and am on the Rogers network. If I live in Toronto, but travel to Ottawa. As long as I'm on the rogers network while in Ottawa, I can make local calls in Ottawa as part of my plan. If i call a Toronto number it would be long distance.
Data would not be roaming as I am still on the Rogers network.
If I was in Ottawa on the Telus network, because Rogers is not available, I would be roaming, and incur roaming charges for voice and data.
Easy way to avoid data roaming is to turn it off in the network settings. If you go into a data roaming state, it simply won't work. This is where WIFI comes in handy.
Thank you. Cleared that right up for me

Has anyone out thought of a switch for root users on 4g phones to disable 3g so you don't have 2 wireless radios for 3g and 4g running at the same time? If so, can someone name the app, or tell me where I can find the info on it?

I think if you disable the 3g radio you would have no voice or text. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

you're right. 4g is only for data.
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using Tapatalk
I'm not sure this is correct. On the Thunderbolt, you can switch it to LTE only, and it remains able to make calls and send/receive texts. Although perhaps that doesn't disable the 3G radio.
Radio Switch
Only reason this even came to my attention is because I had heard rumors about the Sprint users being able to disable their 3g radio and still receive texts and voicemails... So, I figured I would ask about it. I mean with dumbphones that weren't 3g how did those receive those functions without a 3g radio?
voice/text messages are on 1x while internet is on 3g/4g

Issue I see, is sometimes I'll lose 4g around here (GR area too), and if 3g was off, I wouldn't have data at all.

Than why when I'm on 3g, in a non 4g zone, when I go to make a call, the phone disables 3g?
Radio Switch
@sheatyj - I would have use for this though because I travel the country for work... Most places I go are all 4g (or at least Verizon claims them to be) so if I can disable my 3g radio, I can make my phone last a little longer... Also It will help with me having issues with my phone jumping back into 3g when I just had 3 bars of 4g.
heard of a toggle on thunderbolt a widget
How about switch to turn off all but wifi?
A nice feature of my Blackberry was the ability to turn OFF the telephone and leave the WIFI turned ON. This was great for non-coverage areas and when I traveled internationally. Can this be done on the Bionic? tnx

Just enable Airplane Mode. That will turn everything off.
Once everything is off, just re-enable WiFi and/or Bluetooth if you want to use just that.
I am looking at adding the wifi hotspot service to my phone.
I'm wondering if anybody uses it and what your experiences are?
Any things I should watch out for?
A salesman at Best Buy told me that while hotspot is running I can't make or receive phone calls, is this true?
I should clarify, I'm asking about the Verizon mobile hotspot service added to my account. I am not asking about the hacks to steal the service. I understand the reasons others use them, it's just not for me. Whether I like their rules or not, it's Verizon's network so I'm going to play by the rules.
EDIT: it looks like I have the primary answer I was concerned about, you can still make and receive calls while using the hotspot.
I have the 4g LTE hotspot on my Galaxy Nexus. Most of the time when I'm using it, I'm in 3g mode. If a call comes in, it suspends the internet connection until the call is over. I've never tried making a call while using the hotspot, and I'm not sure what would happen when using the hotspot in 4g LTE mode. Since voice calls don't use 4g LTE, I don't see why it wouldn't allow voice calls while using 4g LTE hotspot.

That's pretty much what I expected, what the tech was telling me didn't make sense. It did have just enough plausibility to it though as a carry over from the 3g days when they couldn't do voice and data at the same time.

Thanks, I thought that was one of the draws of lte was being able to have data and voice at the same time.
I'm starting to think this is a viable option as our home internet connection, dropped Comcast a last fall and been using just out phones. It has been working but finding more and more times where I need to get my computer online.

When you are using it are you running on battery or plugged in?
If you're running plugged in does it have the power to run like that indefinitely or does it still drain your battery?
I am able to get my Sprint HTC One to accept my RUIM(CDMA-SIM) of one of CDMA network provider in my country, by making Sprint HTC One to read from RUIM only. Calls, Text & Data is working. The only issue is that it is continuously staying in 'Digital Roaming' or 'Roaming', although I've not been charged any roaming charges by my (RUIM)network provider, all the calls, text are being charged normally with absolutely no roaming charges. And another interesting thing is that if I stop roaming by going into Settings-->Mobile Data-->Roaming & selecting 'Home Only', the phone completely stops receiving signal. I don't know why it still needs that Roaming part to be active even though it is not truly in roaming & I was only charged as per normal rates by my (RUIM) Networ provider & again absolutely no roaming charges. And there is no issue with GSM but with CDMA mode you get that 'Digital Roaming'. I hope some one experienced shed some light on this & suggest a solution for this only issue, which although doesn't stop me(us) using RUIM based CDMA Network in my(our) country(ies).
Please take a look at the attached screenshots which prove that data is also working.

I recently got my phone unlocked due to someone going in on a bill with me with at&t which he was taking my money and not paying the bill and it's over $400 now.... so yeah I went to Metro, and now I can't switch it to get rid of connecting on 4gLTE unless I call the X228 to update the roaming list... as soon as the call connects the LTE drops off and it just shows 4g like it's supposed to. I don't want to drive over 20 miles to get to the nearest corporate store. Is there anyway to get rid of the phone connecting to AT&T networks which it appears to be doing?

It's all in Seetings>More>Mobile Networks>Access Point Names>Select APN>Edit if needed to Metro.
Make sure you have the APN be fast.metropcs.com or it won't work and welcome to metro

Actually downloaded the LTE On/Off for the Thunderbolt and got it all fixed... Thanks guys.
Being it doesn't show the 4GLTE ever, is there a certain setting that I have to be set on to get LTE? I'm in Plant City, FL (right outside of Tampa)
Seems like one part is cleared up, I uninstalled the lte on/off and I'm getting texts but it's trying to connect to 4glte again and I think this is where my problem lies. I got new apn from metro when I called in today so that's all fine.
