Is there any reason I should not upgrade my boot ROM from 1.5.2 to 1.6.2?
Why don't you flash the GodSpeed Recovery? When nandroiding, it's faster since it overclocks the recovery only to 768 mhz.

Is the GodSpeed recovery based off 1.7? With the battery stats and rotate settings wipe? I was trying to find out before making the switch from 1.6.2.

Many people have reported their Hero not being able to handle running at 768 MHz. I haven't tried overclocking my Hero yet, but when it comes to something like a recovery ROM, speed is the least of my cares... I'd rather not risk my phone not being able to handle it for something I don't find necessary. Please correct me if there's something wrong with my logic

That's funny you say that, becasue I know for sure my phone cant handle 768. My phone is overclocked at 710 right now since that is the only way for my phone to be stable. I was wondering the same thing, if I use that recovery will it be unstable too or is it diffrent than OC'ing roms.

It does have battery stats and rotate settings wipe. I went from 1.5.2 to 1.6.2 to GodSpeed. If speed is the least of your worries, then stick with the 1.6.2 recovery image. It's not for everyone.

I know it has no effect on the Rom. I was just saying will I have issues in the recovery since it overclocks at 768 instead of 710? O, and thanks for letting me know about the new options. Appreciate it!

I looked at my 1.5.2 and I have the option to wipe rotate settings and battery stats already. Are you saying 1.6.2 doesn't have this?
Edit: Yes it does have it; in the 1.6.2 OP both are listed as features.
In that case if I had to choose between 1.6.2 and GodSpeed, I'll choose 1.6.2.
Ok, so... back to my original question, is there any downside to upgrading to 1.6.2? The only thing that caught my attention was in the OP it says "NOT yet fully compatible with the new apps2sd method! (as implemented in CM5.0.7)." This doesn't apply to Darktremor's Apps2SD 2.7.5, right?

1.6.2 is the same thing as 1.5 but with more features and i wouldnt doubt if it fixed some bugs. At very least i would recommend upgrading to 1.6. Also some people can use godspeed recovery fine and not OC roms. It really wont hurt to try, you can also change it.
1.7 is made more for aosp roms so if you use Darchdroid or 2.2 then 1.7 is a better recovery for you. Also 1.7 adds a few more features to 1.6 and has google backup option.
The 1.7 recovery was also put out by darch for the hero. It is OC'ed.
The new apps2sd method is only used in aosp roms. All of the htc roms we have here use the old apps2sd method.

OK I'm trying to upgrade to RA-heroc-v1.6.2 and I'm following the instructions here:

after I type mount -a i get this

I'm guessing I shouldn't go ahead and do the next step, flash_image recovery ...

I bought a g1 off of craigslist and it already had root. JF 1.4 ....
Around the time cupcake was released I updated it to jf 1.51
Now since there will be no more JF updates I wish to switch to Cyan builds.
I'm unsure of the proper way of doing this?
Should I go back stock .. unroot and then go thru the steps to load cyan?
Or is there a better way? A wipe?
I'm asking to be clear because internet access is strictly from my g1.
Although I can download all the files I need, I do not have constant access.
I'd appreciate any tips or pointing me to the proper thread.
Check the threads in Dream >Dream Android Development look for Cyanogen's thread on his release of 4.1.999, follow the instructions and you will be fine. I'd also suggest at least flashing Cyanogen's v1.4 Recovery Image over JF's, easier to flash any .zip on sdcard. So, new recovery image (use search option in forums, or look in the same thread i mentioned for cyanogen recovery image 1.4) then update to cyanogen's latest rom build
So simply flash a new recovery, then follow the cyan steps?
Cool, easy as pie.
I certainly appreciate it.
Thank you
Yup. just be careful that you dont boot off the htc recovery rom, or the steps to get to cyans rom become much, much harder

I'd like to chime in here as well since I'm having such a hard time searching for info on the conversion from jf1.51 to the latest build of CM. The amount of posts are staggering!
So, I vaguely remember setting up apps2sd following the guide at the bottom of this page - http://yokohead.com/2009/06/how-to-root-android-g1-with-cupcake-and-appstosd/
Will CM automatically detect this partition?
Also, will I lose the google experience? I'm still confused as to where we are on that.
Thanks for your time! If anyone knows an updated post on this process, please point me to it.

Well the sticky by fingerlickin at the top of this section is a good place to start....
all you have to do is find the singleflash update in the dev section, backup and clear everything off your ext3, and wipe+flash the single update. you can restore the ext backup then.
also you should upgrade to cyan 1.4 recovery
to do so

Thanks B-Man007,
After a couple attempts, all is working well. I'm thoroughly impressed with the snappiness of this build. Although it's only my second time updating a ROM, I'm going to blame the amount of posts for my hesitation and confusion. It was easy to just go in and do it.
I actually updated to the latest Amon-Ra(sp?) recovery. At first my Rom was running real slow and the recovery allowed me to update my ext2 to ext3. Loving it now!
The amount of posts does make it quite confusing i agree, especially with the high amount of conflicting posts
Ya ext3 is a must, but you could have upgraded from cyans too haha
cyan usually has the fastest builds out there though at times it can get very slow.
Another noob here. A few months ago I rooted and flashed to xrom 1.5. When I do a reboot, my recovery screen tells me its "CyanogenMod v1.4 + JF".
Since xRom is experiencing some problems w/ updates, I figured I might try the latest build of Cyanogen. I re-booted, went to recovery mode. Wiped. Then flashed the latest Cyan and even found the 1.6 ota on another site. Flashed both zips, then did a re-boot and it hangs now.
I tried it over and over a few times, wiping then flashing again. Wiping, then re-booting, then flashing the rom, etc. Over and over with the same results.
Then as a test, I tried flashing back to xRom... perfectly fine.
As another test, I tried wiping and flashing to another rom, the rooted stock option (the HTC rom version)... and got the same results as when I tried Cyan... just hangs.
Wiped and flashed again back to xRom... works fine.
So at this point, I'm thinking I need a more updated recovery rom? Any other possible problems? Yes, I did a search all over and this was the best thread that matched my problem.
If it helps... I have a T-mo G1, firmware 1.5, JACxROMv1.5, kernel version 2.6.29.6-jac-ski root. And I know many will slap their foreheads when I say this: But the SD is NOT partioned at all (kept trying and trying with zero success, so I eventually gave up).
OK. I've been asked to create a new thread so I can update the OP with the latest info, so here we are.
First off, if you currently run voodoo, or any other lagfix, YOU MUST DISABLE IT.
DON'T FORGET TO BACKUP YOUR DATA. We make an effort to backup for you and restore, but it's entirely possible that the process will lose your data or otherwise break things. I recommend Titanium Backup for apps/data, please only backup/restore user apps/data with Titanium. System level stuff sometimes doesn't restore properly, causing FCs and other errors.
Now, install the kernel.
http://www.tabbal.net/files/Kernel-ttabbal-v1.7.zip
REBOOT. The z4mod will not install properly if you are not booted into one of my kernels.
Now you can install the z4mod. Reboot into STOCK recovery, then select "Reinstall Packages" to get to clockwork. Now you can install the ZIP below. DO NOT INSTALL FROM ROM MANAGER. It will work, but /cache can't be dismounted if you do it that way, so you can't convert it.
http://www.tabbal.net/files/z4mod-ttabbal-ext4-v1.5.zip
If you want to get back, which you need to do to convert between ROMS and such, here's the revert script.
http://www.tabbal.net/files/z4mod-ttabbal-rfs-v1.5.zip
Tested on Bionix Final and Fusion. Reports of it working on Eugene's ROMS and JI6. Note that if you want to run JI6, you need to install the kernel backport package from Eugene here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=796425
FAQ:
Q) Can I run z4mod with JAC/KK/JI6/Stock Kernels?
A) NO. The kernel has to be modified to work properly with z4mod. So far, I have been unable to build JAC/KK kernels from source. Someone did manage to modify a stock JI6 kernel, but I am unsure of the results. If it has been confirmed, I will add a link here.
Q) What do I need to do to flash a new ROM?
A) Convert back to RFS with the RFS zip above.
Q) I get errors in Clockwork when trying to flash ZIPs.
A) I'm working on that. The workaround for now is to use "adb shell" to mount the partitions manually. Then it will work. The exception is a full ROM flash. You must revert back to RFS for those.
Q) Why bother? VooDoo, OCLF, etc. already exist.
A) z4mod has more potential. We can convert just about any partition to use whatever filesystem we want to. Voodoo and OCLF are limited to /data. The same tricks could be used to convert others, but z4mod is a cleaner design which makes doing that easier.
Thank You
Thanks for taking the time to build a Kernel for the Vibrant that will work with the Z4mods. It was starting to look like no devs were going to work on this Lag Fix mod for the Vibrant!
By the way, have had installed for a week now and everthing is working great, and I'm really digging the Backlight notification built in!
Running Bionix 1.1 with
Ext 2 for Data, DBdata, Cache, and System! No more RFS!
When you say "The exception is a full ROM flash" do you mean that a full ROM flash will not have any problems flashing from CWM after reverting back, or is it still necessary to do an adb mount?
Thanks a lot for the new thread. Much more organized.
Thanks for creating the new post...I was going to post this today as well
The 1.7 kernel version is working perfectly on my Bionic Fusion rom.
Appreciate all your work.Hopefully more people will try it out now...

For a full ROM flash, you must flash the RFS ZIP file, reboot to recovery, then flash the new ROM. The reboot is important, don't skip it.
Wow, thanks for starting this up anew.
Is there a way to convert /cache or others? Any caveats to converting other partitions?
Wow, this is like night & day compared to stock & feels a bit faster than Voodoo.
I did a fresh install of Bionix (older version with voodoo) and played with it & then did a fresh install of Bionix (same version, stock kernel) and then flashed z4 on top of it & it still feels a bit snappier.
I did that so I could get a feel for the differences between it & voodoo (non-scientific).
I'll probably finally upgrade to Bionix Fusion 1.1 with this kernel since it doesn't offer voodoo anymore & this actually seems faster than voodoo for me.
THANK YOU FOR THIS!

No OC/UV. Personally, I don't miss the OC, it's that smooth with z4mod. I am looking into adding it, but hope to just work more closely with Team Whiskey to add it to their kernels as they are way ahead of me on OC/UV stuff. There's no point in everyone working on the same stuff. And if they handle the main kernel I can concentrate on other stuff.
I will try this when I can use other kernels.

Thanks for the quick reply! And I totally understand what you mean about everyone doing double work. There is no need for that. You guys all have enough that your working on.
I do have another question if you dont mind. Does this kernal affect either negatively, positively or nochange over stock, the battery life of the phone? The only reason why I ask is that I have noticed an increase in battery life for my phone while running VooDoo with JAC's OC/UV kernal. If no one has tested this at this point I am willing to flash it and give it a go and report back. But I just thought that if someone already has, then there is no point in me doing double work as well. As the battery life is what I really like about JAC's kernel. Thank you in advance! And just for the record this looks to be very promising in the future. Maybe if JAC is out there looking over any of this thread, hopefully he can chime in and provide us all with some insight or help. Thanks again Ttabbal! Great work!

I have Data, Dbdata, cache, and System all converted to EXT 2 with the Z4Mod and my quadrants are around 1800. This lagfix is much faster than any lagfix to date whether you use EXT 4 or EXT 2.
The UV/OC really doesnt matter with this mod, but of course it could only get better when that is implemented.
Works Great! Thanks!
Followed the instructions and everything worked like a charm. Converted /data and /dbdata to ext4 and /cache to ext2. Ran Quadrant and got a score of 1621. Everything seems very snappy and smooth. Overclocking would be nice, but isn't really necessary. Great work ttabbal! Thanks!

I'm also wondering about battery life. That's the only reservation I have about the kernel required for this lagfix. I have been getting horrible battery life recently even though I've conditioned and all that jaz. So I'm a little worried about it.
I hope everyone understands that I'm not really concerned about the actual overclocking as much as I am with the undervolting of the CPU at midrange speeds. Strictly for battery life. I am completely aware of the benefits of converting the filesystem to extension 2/3/4 and do realize that this will greatly enhance the speed of the phone. I just wanted to be clear. And I am in no way trying to give anyone any type of attitude or imply any type of flaming what so ever. Thank you all for sharing your experiences.
When I went to install the z4mod it completed in like 3 seconds but in the text it says "This WILL take awhile". I'm wondering if I did it right, I followed directions in OP completely. I'm running JI6.

Ha ha ha... Is this the installation guide?
I'm sorry if this is has been answered before but i'm a noob, but an actively learning noob =) There is so much information in these forums but it can be highly overwhelming with so much info out there and hundreds of pages, it's like finding a needle in a hay stack.
1. I'm unsure exactly what a kernel is.
2. I am currently running CWR 3.0.0.5 w/ (Nookie Froyo Custom 0.6.8). Can I / Should I update to CWR 3.0.1.0 even if I stick w/ Froyo? Will the update overwrite my system forcing me to reinstall everything?
3. I saw something about Tablet tools (or something similar in name). Does that get installed in CWR just like Google Apps? Do I install before or after the ROM (Froyo Custom / CM7)?
I would like to go to CM7. But am curious about different Kernels such as Darlingtons OC. Any other recommendations? I currently use SetCPU at 1.1 in Froyo w/ no problems.
Thank you for your help in advanced and to all the amazing devlopers out there!

First off, read more before attempting anything. I cannot stress enough that you should always be sure you understand exactly what you are doing, even if you're unsure how the process works, otherwise if something goes wrong and you weren't sure what exactly was happening you'll be kicking yourself later.
The kernel is the part of an operating system that actually makes the software and hardware talk to eachother in a sane manner, read: it makes everyone play nice hopefully. CM7 does include one in the image but if you read further on how to flash stuff you can replace the stock one with an overclockable version if you'd like.
Some of the documentation I've found can be a touch confusing if you're new to Android to be sure, I'd reccommend reading thinkgs a few more times and asking questions about specific tutorials, it will help get you started in the direction you'd like to go.
OP Modified question to be better suited, new response to match:

Kernel, in OS terms I answered above, in Android terms it's basically the same except how it is updated vs on say a Linux PC is different, isnted of just installing it normally you have to "Flash" a separate file, more on that in response to #4.

2. I am currently running CWR 3.0.0.5 w/ (Nookie Froyo Custom 0.6.8). Can I / Should I update to CWR 3.0.1.0 even if I stick w/ Froyo? Will the update overwrite my system forcing me to reinstall everything?

I have CWR 3.0.1.0 and it works great, I am not aware of it overwriting previously installed ROMs but I'm not a CWR dev so take that with a large grain of salt.

3. I saw something about Tablet tools (or something similar in name). Does that get installed in CWR just like Google Apps? Do I install before or after the ROM (Froyo Custom / CM7)?

Link to the thread in question, I'm not sure what you're asking about on this one.

I would like to go to CM7. But am curious about different Kernels such as Darlingtons OC. Any other recommendations? I currently use SetCPU at 1.1 in Froyo w/ no problems.

CM7 comes with its own kernel but Darlington's OC kernel works amazingly well, he has packages that you can flash via CMR just like you would GApps, just make sure you grab the one that is right for your install of CM7 (SD or EMMC depending).
Hope that helps
OK. So I am sure I am missing something obvious here. I've done a ton of searching and reading, but I'm still at a bit of a loss.
I am running CM7 with dalingrin's OC kernel flashed over the top of it. I see tons of people overclocking to 1.0 and 1.1 GHz, yet I can't seem to options for doing so.
In CM7 settings under performance, I have options for 100-950. I can O/C to 950 and that's great, but how do people try settings above that? I tried setCPU, but it seems to cap out at 950 as well.
What am I missing?
You need to get a different kernel, such as Dalingrin's, from the android development forum.
Hi,
Looks like you didn't successfully install the overclock kernel, see:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=925451
for instructions.
I have been using the CWM install method and am running CWM7 RC4 with
the interactive governor between 300 and 1100MHz.
I usually install the updated CM7 along followed by GAPPS then the
latest OC kernel. Perhaps you installed the kernel before CM7? CM7
comes with its own kernel that overwrites existing kernel when you install CM7.
Hope this helps,
Peter

That is odd. I have never had any issue like that with any of the oc kernels.
My one and only question is if you a sure you flashed the right one successfully?
http://nook.handhelds.ru/dalingrin/kernels/033111/
Note that there are 2 kernels for each ROM-
one is for internally installed (emmc)
One is for sd card installations (sd)
I do not know if any errors would show up if you flashed the wrong one or if there was an error with the download.
My suggestion would be to try again and see if it works.
My response may be too basic- I don't know your knowledge level.
One thing though- IN CM7 it is best to NOT use SetCPU or other apps to change cpu speed, or at least that used to be the case. I don't use them anymore.

Ding ding ding, we have a winner. I was using the SD version, as I had a bootable CWM SD that I used to get into recovery. Once I loaded the emmc onto the SD card and flashed that, they showed up.
Thanks for all of the replies.
Nice!
Glad I was able to help-
Usually I am just getting all kinds of info and help for my own stuff here. Being able to pay that back is a good thing.
Be sure not to flash a cm7 nightly after you flash the kernel. If you do, you will flash there stock cnn kernel over the oc'Ed kernel

Actually a good point-
Nothing wrong with updating to the latest nightly but you WILL go back to having the stock CM7 kernel again.
Re-flashing the oc kernel fixes that problem, of course, but you'll need to reset max cpu speed and governor again.
