Here's the sequence of events, wonder if anyone can point me in the right direction for repair.
I am on Froyo, the initial leak rooted by Paul.
I wanted to get my market working, so I found this billg market fix + busybox update zip.
I installed RomManager, and it suggested I flash ClockworkMod Recovery, so I did. It guessed my phone correctly (I think) as the "Nexus One (GSM)". I'm now no longer totally sure - but that IS the T-Mobile version right?
Anyway, I flashed clockworkmod recovery, and then I chose the market fix, and then I rebooted.
Everything seemed OK but the first warning sign was no graphical boot screen (no sparking multi-colour X). It booted up OK but no connection to the network at all. I can not even enable wi-fi.
Not I'm not too sure what to do, would hate to make matters worse. I can boot into recovery and it is ClockworkMod recovery, but of course there are no backups on that thing I can restore to. I was using AmonRA recovery before.
Any thoughts?
TIA Paul

find a froyo radio update from somewhere. there on alot of the rom pages
and flash a new rom after the radio and see what happens
The latest clockworkmod is buggy for me too. You can flash back to amon's recovery in fastboot.
Quick update
Flashing the Froyo radio update was no help.
I re-flashed Amon RA recovery and now I'm reapplying the original Paul's frf50.
Fingers crossed.
Phew, OK I'm back on the air.
Now I have to try to figure out how to apply the market fix without using ClockworkMod!!!
Thanks for help/advice.

Is it a zip you flash in recovery?
I have flashed my Hero with many ROMS, mostly the Cyanogen nightly's. I have seen recently a huge lag no matter which build I use. I think there may be a corrupt file left behind that is causing the problems.
How can I erase everything and start completely from scratch? I have already done a wipse and re-imaged from there and it doesn't seem to help.
Run the officail RUU, then re-root again. that is all you need to do.

What all did you wipe? Make sure to wipe everything. You shouldn't have to go back to an official Sprint ROM and reroot. Just wipe everything and reflash the ROM you want.

I tried to wipe everything but I got errors asking me to do it through ADP. Since I am a newb with all of this I was hoping there was an easy way to do it.

If you are using the Amon Recovery v1.5.2, it does actually wipe everything even thought it gives you that 'run via adb' nonsense. It's just a small error/bug in that version of recovery that doesn't output the correct string of text, but the wiping part does work correctly and it does actually wipe Dalvik, data, ext, etc. even though the output tells you something else.
As said above, you need to wipe ALL of those (except battery) every time you flash a new ROM, or else it can lead to some corruption like you are experiencing. If still unsatisfied or if you still can't get things to work, then rerun the official RUU as also suggested above to start fresh. But I will tell you that I've never had to rerun the RUU before in the entire 6 months I've been rooted, so I think your problem is maybe just incorrect procedure between wiping and flashing ROMs. All phones are different though. Good luck, and please keep posting so we can continue to help you out.

What recovery are you using? Anyways, the RUU wipes everything, no need to wipe beforehand, see this to RUU
I haven't flashed many types of ROM's, only a few. I have been sticking with Cyanogen Mod I would say 90% of the time. I cleared out everything and it didn't seem to help much.
Most of the time it lags when I am dealing with email, or a email comes in. Last week I got tired of it and OC'd it up to 768 and I saw a huge difference but my battery died after 6 hours. Even with the CPU clocked to 768 I can notice a huge difference when I have a email coming in.
I just flashed to Cyanogen's newest nightly to see if there are any differences. If not, I will try to un-root and flash directly to Cyanogen's rom. Will I need to clear everything before going to a new rom from stock?
I am trying to flash back to Stock and I received an error basically saying the bootloader was wrong. It appears this happens when you are trying to go backwards. I am trying to go from CyanogenMod 6.1 (Froyo) to the stock 1.5 build. Is this not what i am supposed to do?

Assuming you mean going back to pre-root, right out of the box state...you need to run the official RUU from your computer, not via recovery.
Yes, I am trying to go to a pre-rooted state.
I tried that, and it could never detect my android phone. I googled the error message and someone said to try it from the fast boot mode. I rebooted my phone into this and re-ran the update. It got further along but it came up with this error message along the way.

You are using HTC Sync and have the USB drivers installed?
----------
Sent from the XDA App on my FroYoed Sprint Hero...so forgive my inevitable typos
Sounds like a driver issue. Also make sure you have USB debugging on, otherwise adb will not recognize your device.
I've run across issues with loose fragments of data being left after a wipe via recovery. My favorite was the home key ceasing to work. A full wipe via fastboot always seems to do the trick. Just make sure you have a copy of your recovery image to reflash when done. You'll need the ENG SPL as well.
You'll do this all via adb.
In bootloader:
fastboot erase system -w
fastboot erase boot
fastboot boot your_recovery_image.img
adb shell mount /sdcard
adb push your_recovery_image.img /sdcard/your_recovery_image.img
adb shell flash_image recovery /sdcard/your_recovery_image.img
adb shell reboot
Just make sure your recovery image is on the root of your sdcard. Full wipe in minutes without that long ruu process! I've been doing this every time I flash a new ROM lately, never an issue.
I created a Nandroid backup of the stock Nexus S Rom. This includes the latest OTA GRH78 that just got pushed out today 12/22/10. This is 100% stock.
Link: http://www.mediafire.com/?ontvvh8z9h9lb7a
WARNING: This will wipe everything on your phone
Requirements:
-Clockwork recovery or other custom recovery
-The nandroid backup from here http://www.mediafire.com/?ontvvh8z9h9lb7a
-Transfer cable, to transfer contents of downloaded file to phone's internal memory
Instructions:
1. Download nandroid file from link provided above
2. Extract the .zip file on your computer
3. Move the folder "2010-12-22.21.06.07" to the clockworkmod/backup/ directory of your phones internal storage
Note: if you have never used nandroid you wont have the directory clockworkmod/backup on your phones internal storage, so you will have to manually create those folders, then put the folder "2010-12-22.21.06.07" in the new folders you created
4. Now go into your clockwork recovery manager, you can do this by typing in "adb reboot recovery" if you have adb setup on your computer, and the phone is connected. Or while the phone is turned off hold the volume up+power to get into bootloader mode, then go down to "recovery" by using the volume up/volume down keys to scroll up or down, then press the power button to launch it, and this will launch the recovery manager
5. Once your in clockwork mod recovery select "backup and restore"
6. Then click "restore"
7. Now you should be able to choose and select "2010-12-22.21.06.07"
8. Clockwork will now restore this nandroid backup
9. Reboot system
Note: This version of android build "GRH78" will make sure you have the stock recovery manager everytime you reboot the phone. So after doing this, after you reboot you will no longer have clockwork mod.
Edit: According to xda member Luxferro the new update introduced /etc/install-recovery which may have not been in 2.3, but anyways, it runs this on bootup, and if the MD5 of the recovery doesn't match what is expected, it reflashes the stock recovery back over, so if you dont want the stock recovery to be flashed everytime you boot if your on clockwork or another non stock rom, just rename it to prevent it from running on boot. And for those of you who want to return your phone back to stock this nandroid will do that for you since it also flashes the stock recovery.

No, this will not touch the bootloader, or the recovery. The phone bootloader will stay unlocked, and the recovery manager will stay in tact.
Hi there, your "stock" nandroid is screwed up.
I just tried it right now and TONS of apps are missing from the market with your nandroid.
PayPal, NYTimes, aFile, Fios Mobile Remote, TONS of stuff that I had are gone from the Market.
I pulled out my SIM card, and still all missing.
I restored my Nandroid of my current system, and they're all back in the Market.

so... for people that want to fully return to stock:
apply this update. go to fastboot mode and then do a fastboot oem lock. this will reset the phone and recovery partition to full stock.
you can check this by rebooting into recovery and now the recovery will be stock.
I don't think his nandroid file is messed up, there's a different market version its now 2.13 not 2.12 like on the previous build. I think that has something to do with it
Now I'm having a problem with everytime I reboot the phone I lose clockworkmod recovery an I got to reflash it with rom manager. I don't lose root tho but I lost it when I did his nandroid an had to reroot

Yup. I tried it, and I'm missing those apps as well.
Yes, me too. I lost many of the apps available in the market and the ability to go into recovery.
*Facepalm
These apps were missing from the Nexus S originally on day 1... Lol.
It's how Android market works. New builds don't get full market support. You need to wait for Google to update their system to allow the new build to get copy protected apps from the market.
Will this wipe my sd card?
I just checked and I don't have those apps either in market, and I'm on stock.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
Sigh! You're not supposed to have those apps.
It's not an issue with this nandroid, it's an issue with every single new version / update to android on any phone. You will always have missing apps until Google adds the build number to its servers.
Other than that, thanks a lot for posting this OP! Saved me a huge pain in the ass getting updated -_-
Yes, maybe the apps issue is an issue with the server not updating yet, but have you noticed any problem with the clockwork recovery not functioning after reboot?
My recovery reverted to 3e recovery after flashing this. Clockwork is gone. No problem though, I wanted clockwork gone.
Now how do we root without flashing clockwork ?
I will try to investigate the recovery issue. But some people wanted to go back to stock recovery, and were not able to with the stock recoveries floating around, so that's pretty odd that this nandroid takes you back to stock recovery.

Really? That's interesting. Has anyone actually done this and confirmed it restores stock recovery? Easy fix for something that's been vexing quite a few people the last few days.
How long till the Market "fixes" itself and updates to 2.1.2 so the missing apps appear on the market?
I decided to root my phone and try some ROMS last night on my Captivate. Love it by the way except one problem that I can not seem to figure out.
Before I did any flash I used ROM Manager to take 2 backups of my stock ROM and also used Titanium to backup all user apps and data.
Everytime I try to go back to stock and the phone reboots after recovery mode I get the AT&T logo and it never goes anywhere.
How do I get back to stock?
THANK!
If you are trying to restore stock through nancroid backup that won't work. You need to use odin.
What build is your phone? You can find it under your battery, something between 1006-1012
It is 1012. I thought you could just restore from those backups to get back to stock.
I have never used odin before. How do I go about that?
Thanks!
I can not find a good download for Odin. Could somebody provide please?
Thanks!
With your build you need to be careful what odin you use
You wavy to follow this

Clockwork does not restore kernel and modem. You are stuck at at&t screen because your system is ext 4 used on roms, and your nandroid is rfs. Long and short it won't work
So.... I am a bit confused now. Is there even a way to get back to stock at this point?
The link I posted
Your stock is jh7, odin One click is jf6. The procedure laid out in the link will get you back to jh7, although it takes a couple steps.
As long as you can get into recovery you can probably reflash any rom you have on your sd
Yikes thats a tall order to get back. Thought it would be more simple. So it is easy getting to a point to flash ROMS... Not so easy going back.
I'm also stuck in the same vicious cycle as we type.
I got 2 different stock rom backups and a cognition backup and can't get nothing to restore factory. I got premium ROM Manager. I can get into 2 different recovery screens. 1 from the Clockwork v2.5.1.3-voodoo lagfix and 1 using the update.zip on my root. Can't restore anything that gets me past the ATT logo.

Have you tried this
Phone off
Hold volume up and down and power
Let go when at&t comes up
Should be green recovery
Select install zip from sd
Choose zip
Select rom file that is saved on your sd, any you may of tried
Confirm
If your lucky maybe you can flash the rom
Uhh ??? Somehow from the recovery mode I just re-installed Cognition 3.04 back on my phone by browsing to the ROM.zip an installing it. I have to charge my phone for a few but I'll definitely come back and tell how I did it after a while. I think it was by browsing to cognitionv3.zip from 1 of the recovery menus insead of going to the update.zip. That beats the hell out of going through all the steps of going back to stock.
Thanks for the help.
EDIT:
Yeah somewhat like above post, only I had the Cognition (red) recovery menu and I went to install .zip and browsed to the cognitionv3.zip on my sd and installed it. *BLAM* back to Cognitionv3.04 I'll work with that till I got more time to mess with the other.

Yep I have tried that. Or at least I guess....
I go into the recovery screen but the problem is the only zip files I have are my custom ROMS. I did a complete backup with ROM Manager of the stock ROM before flashing however it did not create a zip file, it created a folder which contains everything that was backed up. I have tried to restore from that but when I do and the phone restarts it sticks on the AT&T white logo screen.
I am not saying restore stock, I am saying flash a rom. it may get you a working phone
Oh yeah I have done that just fine. I am using Cognition.
I am just trying to find my path back to stock.

Exactly, If you flashed a ROM on the phone the ROM is still there. Just use the recovery mode and choose "install a zip from sd" then go to "choose a zip from sd" then it will let you browse the sd for the .zip(rom) you just had. (not stock). It should be successful. Worked for me.
At least you will have a working phone and you can then look into going stock once you've read up a little more on it.
Just trying to help.
EDIT: oh, OK, I myself was in a panic and had just found that possible.
No problem. Thank you for the help!
I was thinking that when I did the backup with ROM Manager that it was creating a ROM version of the stock so I could flash back. Guess not though.
I have no idea what happened, my Hero has been rooted for over a year now and never had any problems. I flashed a herodeck rom version 1.2 and after that I could not flash any more roms but could restore all my nandroids. So I used this, RUU_Hero_C_Sprint_2.27.651.5_R_signed_release.rar, to go back to stock and installed unrevoked, and all went well. I then flashed this TeamHeroC-2.3.5-01OCT-CM-V2.zip and finally it worked and was working great until last night my battery went dead and when I plugged it in to charge it powered up to the white HTC screen and has been stuck there since. I have tried to reflash , restore nandroids, and even hboot a HERCIMG and that is when I noticed S-ON. and since this has happened every file I try to flash comes up corrupt and the latest CM rom came up no signature, and I keep getting errors such as this. So right now all I can do is boot into recovery or Hboot. Please someone help me with this. I love this phone!

Check md5sums of the zips in your sd card to verify no corrupt files. Also make sure signature verification is not toggled in CWM.

Hi,
If u have the time, unroot the same way again and then reroot but this time use ROM manager(free version). Update to latest recovery and then
Start over.
It sucks but without the proper knowledge its difficult to fix some issues. So starting over is easiest.

Again thanks for the advice but I can't even do that now as I am stuck on the HTC screen and all I can do besides look at a white HTC screen is boot recovery (darchstars RA recovery) and boot into bootloader. Everything I try to flash will not verify for some reason or another(corrupt or unsigned or something crazy like that) and the RUU will not connect to the phone because it is stuck at the white HTC screen. This one has really stumped me as I have brought this phone back from some bad predicaments, or at least I thought they were. I did get it to try and flash a hercimg of an extracted RUU that is on this forum but it ends up saying no image found and just goes back to the bootloader menu.

Try downloading a recovery from Dastin's thread. Rename it HERC.IMG and place in the root of the SD card. Bootloader and flash. Power down then hold home and power back up to see if recovery worked. See if you can get any recovery flashed at all and if you do you can fix anything then.

You might want to try getting s-off via darch's method. Then flash the eng-spl. Then do a fastboot erase system -w. Then reflash your recovery to see if that helps. If you need any of the files mentioned just pm me and I'll send you a dropbox link. You should be able to get back up and running this way. Good luck.

Are you formatting boot, system, cache, and data before flashing any of these roms? I do it 3x for each partition to make sure everything is wiped clean.
I have always thought that unrevoked was a permanent s-off unlike darch's which is temporary. I have both. I have always felt that if i can get into recovery, I'm golden. Make sure everything is wiped (not just data and cache) before you flash a new Rom.

Yes, a couple of times, manually and with Light's format and Caulkin's format. and also I tried to fastboot hercimg.zip of the extracted RUU and all was going well and it actually finally asked if I wanted to apply the update like it is suppose to and it started loading and then when it finished it rebooted hboot and tried to install it again and also at this point I had s-on again. So I redone everything and am now back to s-off.

Are you still on a stock "sense" rom right now? What is your PRL, Radio, and PRI? Make sure everything is updated and you should be ready to go now. Since you are S-off now, I would place a HERCIMG.zip on your sd card of a recovery (I've been liking the 4.0.1.4 Orange Lantern that Dastin compiled (which is an unofficial CWM) just so that I have it at the ready in case anything goes south.
If your s-off again make a nand if you can. Also like dp asked what rom, radio, are you on???. Also imo you should flash Ra1.7 untill your back up and running for this process and just revert back when all this is done. Also you should do a fast boot erase system -w to clear everything out. Then backup your sd to your pc and format it as well. Once threw your pc and restore the defaults and then threw your recovery. Which is y I suggest Ra it makes it quick and easy. Ill check back here to see were your at threw out the day.
Edit: Pm sent.

The last rom I was on was [ROM][03-OCT-2011][TeamHeroC-2.3.7 - 2.6.35 Kernel] but I am stuck at the white HTC screen right now has been all day. When you say RA 1.7 recovery are you talking about Darchstar's RA 1.7?
Still no luck everything I try to flash fails, I kept getting an error 5 in clockwork recovery when trying to flash CyanogenMod 7 for the HTC Hero (CDMA) :: V7.1.0 (9 Oct 2011).

Okay I switched recoveries to RA 1.7. I have tried several times to flash CyanogenMod 7 for the HTC Hero (CDMA) :: V7.1.0 and each time a different file comes up corrupt but I have been checking the md5's after it is on the sd card and they have been good. It is crazy, I can flash everything but Roms.
You should do a fastboot erase system -w.
