Lots of 3G dropouts!! - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all,
My issue with this phone has been mentioned here: http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/android/thread?tid=384f4daca48e10b1&hl=en
My basic problem is that atleast 4-5 times each and every day the 3G connection suddenly drops out. As the link says, I see the "up arrow" blinking, but no action from the "down arrow" next to the 3G symbol on the top right corner of the phone. At this point, all apps complain about no network connection. About 45-60 seconds later the connectivity is restored automatically, and I can happily do anything on the Internet again.
I've had the phone for 1 week and this happens regardless of location or signal strength. So I've had this problem at work, at home, while driving etc. The dropouts also occur even when the number of bars indicating signal strength is 3 or 4.
These constant dropouts are really infuriating and I'm not sure if it's a network problem or device problem. Has anyone else had this? I'll be very grateful with any suggestions.
Thanks.

same here, I dont know if this caused by my ****ty provider.
I'd like to try new radio but it seems it still has problem with bluetooth

I had this problem too, it was very frustrating. However the new radio 5.08 appears to have solved the issue for me (I don't use BT currently so can't report on that aspect)
Ask a work around, try setting your phone to "WCDMA Only". That improved things for me previously.

I have also had this problem and I am on stock FRF91. It really slows me down when I need to quickly perform a task that's data related.

This is exactly what I'm doing.
The internet oon the phone barely works on 2G, so I lock it on 3G only mode.

Have this problem on stock.
Also drops calls when it goes down to 1 bar (in areas where another phone with the same provider will have 2-3+ bars)

This has been discussed in detail here

Thanks for the replies guys. So if a mod completely gets rid of the problem, that means it's a software issue right? What's this radio 5.08 that solves the problem? Can I apply this chagne without rooting?
I'm in Australia, running stock 2.1-update1 (EPF30).

you could try update to Froyo

Oh, so Froyo will fix this issue? That's great.
I don't mind waiting for Vodafone to release Froyo then. Shouldn't be long now.

Hmm I see. I'll wait and see I suppose.
I'm surprised if it's just a software issue, why it hasn't been released to everyone.

3G and APN
I have froyo it does not solved the problem.
I also have an issue with the APN, I can't change the MCC to 425 from the default, it wont save it, any suggestion?

I tried going though this, but unfortunately it's not obvious to me what I should be doing. I'll include my details here:
Firmware: Android 2.1-update1
Baseband version: 32.26.0024U_4.04.00.03_2
Build number: EPF30
Could someone please help me out here? Is it possible to upgrade just the radio version somehow?
How do the CM mods manage to get a radio version better than Froyo?
Thanks again.

G1 1.5 poor reception ?

I am running on AT&T with no problems except where I live(very rural). My Blackberry Curve would get 2 bars with no dropped calls. I really like my G1 but I get from "0" bars to "2" bars depending where I'm in my home and phone either gives me "no service" when dialing or just drops some of the calls. Also, takes forever to complete dialed number.
Is there anything I can do to improve performance at home?
Many Thanks,
Stan
have you updated your radio to the 26I Radio?
To expand on what Bman said, if you have rooted your phone, please go to Settings > About phone and check the the radio ends in '26I'.
Followup ? on reception
I bought the phone used and it had 1.5, don't know if anything else done such as "rooting".
When I went into "settings" I now find it says its 1.6, but I couldn't see anything about changing radios.
Any further help?

Sorry I should have been a little more explicit. The radio is also know as the baseband. Sounds like your phone is running the official update, not much we can do in that case... (What I mean is, if it was rooted it might have the wrong radio firmware installed, as yours is official it will be up to date.)
Many thanks, I'll guess I'll have to wait for closer tower

[Q] random signal loss on all froyo roms.....

hi guys, ive flashed a couple of different froyo roms and decided to stick to FroyoRedux 1.5
reason for all this reflashing.......when using 3G networks i randomly get no signal for about 2 minutes and then its back again. im not too sure why this is happening and wondering if anyone else encountered the same problem?
there seems to be no problem with 2G networks but being on 2G is lame and makes mobile internet kinda pointless.
BTW problem still persists in FroyoRedux 1.5
phone specs are in the sig (if you wanna know what im using)
cheers!
Had this issue on my kaiser running froyo also, went to an older radio which fixed it, and amazingly enough, the same happened on my G1, and the same step fixed it.
Using radio 2.22.23.02 I had regular 'no signal' issues, going back to 2.22.19.26I solved it for me, I still get signal loss on occasion, but only in known very low signal areas,
hmmm interesting, im gunna give this a try and see what the outcome is.
did u just flash the old radio file over your current one or did you use a specific procedure?

JK3 modem, loss of all reception, drains battery, requires a reboot

So, right now I am using the Axura RC1 CE (I will update later), but I have had the problem described in the topic on various other ROMs using the JK3 modem.
It works fine for a few days (time is random, I have not been able to manually reproduce the issue), then randomly I lose all reception. Switching to flight mode fails, it gives no error, it just does nothing, in the notification bar it just says (searching). I have to reboot the phone to get the phone functioning again.
Anyone else experiencing this on ATTs network, or if there is a fix, I spent the last hour searching and going through the various threads to no avail (or I just suck at searching)..
Did you try the Axura thread?
Sent from my liberated Captivate via XDA App.
I'm having the same issue but I've tried Assonance as well and still get the random no service. Tried different i9000 modems as well--anyone know if its safe to use a captivate modem??? I'm guessing no but just want to know if anyone has tried it without borking the phone.

I'm having this same issue as well, that's why I've tried to stay away from the UGJK3 modem, however, it's seems every custom ROM is starting to use it
As far as using a captivate modem with an i9000 ROM, I've tried that also, while it didn't totally brick my phone, I did get random FCs. I've read that is a dangerous path to go down.
I feel the same way. I might try the CogKernel and see if that helps...
Please, please, PLEASE do not post these types of things in Development.

+1 Lets keep this forum area clean .. its just for development stuff guys.
I have had the same issue with all I9000 modems, the only fix that has worked for me is to enter the service menu and force WCDMA 850 Band only. Also, questions should be posted in the question forum.
[this thread is pretty relevant to development - considering the rom chefs are using this modem in their releases and it has a potential major flaw. if the mods find it better to be in Q&A, then please move it - otherwise, i think the right eyes will see it here]
yes, yes and yes!
ive been posting about it in the perception thread, but no one (save for 1 user) chimed in with the same issue.
we both noticed that we both have an issue where we will bounce from 3G to H and back fairly often. this leads me to believe that it could be part of the problem.
i just odin'ed back to stock because my phone isnt receiving incoming calls now.
what i had planned to do was flash the latest perception but use a different modem... but it seems like the only sensible modem is the JK3 (although there is word on the street a new one just leaked?). so that idea is kind of out.
someone here said they were going to try cogkernel2, but i was on setirons and cogkernel2 and it happened with both. it seems to be a modem issue.
i wanted to lock the phone to use 3G only to see if that would help, but no one shared a way how... but reading this post it seems i can do it from the service menu - though i dont know exactly what to set/change to keep it only on 3G. (any help would be great).
so i believe im going to flash perception 8 and see if i can lock it into 3g mode and go from there. this is getting pretty tiring. im hoping if a new modem releases that will help, but i honestly am not sure i can wait since it is making the phone unusable.
below are my posts from the perception thread on the issue.

i searched but did not find...
i see others have had issues with APN force closing. i do as well, but assuming that isnt a problem, i dont mind.
my issue is that after a certain period of time left asleep, my phone will completely fall off the network. changing flight and data mode dont work, nor help. a restart works. this has started a day or two ago, but was not an issue for the first week (give or take). if it is relevant, my network constantly swaps between H and 3G where i live.
i have not found a setting to force 3g (and disable hsdpa) as i figured it was the network hopping that was doing it. am i just missing that setting? anyone else with this issue? (again, i saw people with the apn force close but not complete loss of network unrelated to initial flash)
also, i think that each build should get its own thread. it is VERY difficult to find accurate information on the current build once a thread has 4 builds and 250 pages in it. even with search, it would still be a good idea.
thanks and thanks.

of note: going into wifi settings is also borked. it will eventually time out and FC. i also think that the times my phone has completely lost network and not reconnected have happened more often when charging. but that could be coincidence.

in relation to my post below yours, does locking the 850 band only force the phone to use only 3G, or is HSDPA/HSUPA still enabled but you found the 850 band to be more stable.
this is what my next attempt will be to get a solid platform going.
I've tried different modems other than jk3 and it doesn't fix the problem. Stinks that you've used Cogkernel2 and it doesn't help. I also tried the different band selection in service mode and it also hasn't help me (apparently this worked for some people). If you want to give it a shot do the following:
1. Dial *#0011#
2. menu button then soft back key
3. then phone control -> network control -> band selection
4. good luck!

ugh. that is disheartening. i will try the band lock, thanks.
can you confirm or deny that when you notice your phone goes completely out of service that it has been hopping between 3G and H? it would be interesting to see if we all have that issue as part of it.
also, fingers crossed for that supposed new modem.
/sigh
Yeah this really sucks because these roms are great with this one very big exception. I haven't noticed the hoping before I need to reboot. I have noticed that if I switch into airplane mode once I drop service I can't turn it off.
I had the same issues with Axura and Percetion. I found that switching my network control to WCDMA 1900 only pretty much fixed it. The only problem I had after was that any time I lost service naturally, ie, bad area, or shielded rooms, whenever I came back into a good service area I could never get a signal again. So I would have to reboot.
In the end, I'm back on Cog, 2.3b7 and no issues for about 14 hours now.

I'm using the non oc. I'm not gaming or doing anything too wild with my phone so non is just fine for me.

[Q] Wi-Fi To 3G

Hi,
Got a really annoying issue with my Nexus One that has been happening since the Froyo days, when I leave home to go to work I turn the Wi-Fi off on my phone to save battery. Sometimes I use the widget sometimes I go through the settings.
The problem is that the 3G doesn't alway's kick in, the only way for me to get 3G working is to turn my phone off and on which always works.
Any suggestions on why this is happening and how to resolve them?
I am running Stock Ginger Bread on my Nexus One on the the Vodafone network in the UK.
Try checking your signal strength: *#*#4636#*#*
You can try to enable 3G only and see if you can keep a signal.
My signal is sometimes intermittent due to topography. Stupid flat Ohio. Haha

Thanks, it won't be that though because once I turn the phone off then back on it's there. Also once I turn W-Fi off and 3G doesn't kick in, then it won't do untill I restart. Also another reason why I know this isn't the case is because even when I do this at work 3G doesn't kick in and there is a Vodafone 3G mast on the roof
never seen this problem before, but it sounds like something that might have to be fixed by doing a full wipe and reflashing your ROM. i know its drastic, so maybe do a nand backup first. then flash and see if the problem remains. if its still there, than just go right back to your backup and no harm and nothing lost. worth a shot.

I'm on a stock Nexus One unrooted so I shouldn't have to Root to fix an Android problem. Never Rooted before but considering it.
I got the exact same problem with Froyo and Gingerbread ROMs, can't remember if I had that issue with MIUI ROMs, but definitely with CyanogenMod ROMs.
Instead of rebooting the phone I suggest switching flight mode on/off it's faster than a full reboot
Haven't found any real solution yet and always thought I'm teh only one with that problem as I couldn't find any other person with that issue. Right now I'm testing different Radio/ROM combination and if that doesn't work I'll need to check if any app is causing the problem.
Any chance you are using Tasker?

[Q] My IncS completely disconnects, often!

First of all, let me start of what I've tried doing, in order.
New SIM-card, factory reset, unlock + root, custom ICS (VirtousQuattro).
None of the above solved my problem, it still persists! The problem is, the phone disconnects completely from the network (no bars) and I can't manually search for a new provider due "active package transmission" or something like that, it stays disconnected for 1-3 minutes and then reconnects. It happens fairly often, like once for every 5 times I try using the phone. I haven't noticed the problem when being connected to a WiFi, so I'd assume the problem is related to an issue between the phone and the network.
Has anybody else had this problem? Any idea how to solve it?
Have you tried flashing a new Radio? I can't see how that would differ from flashing a custom ROM, but might be worth a shot?

Yes Naforcee, I have exactly the same problem. And it never happens while using wifi as you said.
It started immediately after I updated to Sense 3 / Android 2.3.5 from HTC.

Don't think it's a physical problem, I have perfect connection and it just dies out for about 2 min until it reconnects, and I can't search for network when it's down due to active packet transfer..
Could try a new SIM card. Might not fix it, but worth a shot - I've seen this posted as a fix for other people.
I used to have this problem on certain radios on the Desire Z, after flashing around a bunch of radios to try all of them. Stuck with one and it went away, so it was software for me.

Try flashing this radio http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1471861 using the ADB method. If that doesn't help I recommend doing a full wipe and reinstalling the ROM. There are a lot of different custom ROMs for IncS which can be found at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1136463
I personally like Niks ROM and Android Revolution HD.
Looks like rom installation issue.
My son's Inc-S having a similar problem to the OP, but more severe. A couple of weeks ago he entered airplane mode with all behaving normally, but since exiting airplane mode at the end of the flight he hasn't been able to register on the network (voice or data). We've tried:
fiddling with all the network settings
change sims (all sims work on my Inc2, none work on his IncS)
cleaning the antenna connections
reboot
factory reset
flashing new ROM (Android Revolution HD 2.3.0)
flashing new radio (3805.10.03.29_M)
So far, no satisfaction. We're still seeing no bars of reception (with an X) in the notification area, and don't have the option to manually or automatically register with any network operator (although several occasionally show up as options under "Search Networks"). We usually get the error message, "Unable to search for network while packet connection is active" when trying to select a network. Funny thing is, mobile network data has been shut off on his phone for the past month so the packet connection is definitely not active (wifi is on). Based on a network signal analyzer app, the phone is receiving the same mobile network signal as mine (-65 to -70 db) when they are side-by-side, so the problem does not appear to be in the antenna. The phone works just fine using wifi but is useless as a phone.
Any ideas about what to try next?

Probably a RIL-Radio communication issue. Recommended radio is the newer 3822.01.08.14_M radio, so maybe you should try that.
