I'm here in the middle of San Francisco. I just ran a test at www.dslreports.com/mspeed and NEVER saw the 3G icon change. I got 120 kbit/sec.
Anyone know if I need to do something to get it to switch to HSDPA? Anyone else in SF able to get higher speeds on this test?
Robert
If HSDPA / 3G coverage is available in your area, the phone will detect it - assuming that Settings > Connections > HSDPA > Turn on HSDPA is enabled.
Network speed performance can be affected by any number of factors including how heavy the network is being used by subscribers.

I was in SF last week and was getting really good download speeds with the 3G turning to H al the time.
Possible Problem with No 3G
First, is this your first 3G device, from Cingular? If so, they may have skipped the "change of technology" step in the upgradeing process...I worked for Congular for 2 years...If they didn' do a change of technology you will only get edge speeds...Hope it helps....

Hmmm, good point, my account online shows a line under the features list of "UMTS Compatible". I *thought* you wouldn't get the 3G icon either w/o that but not sure. FWIW I was getting HSDPA in some parts of the SFO airport last week and not others, so you just might be unlucky...
Richard
not sure if this would help but, how old is your sim card? does it say 3G on it?
I just switched to AT&T so the sim card is new. In an earlier post, isdereks said to go to settings > Connections > HSDPA.
Well, that may be the problem. In Connections, I don't have an icon that says HSDPA.
Thoughts?
thx
Robert
After you got your tilt, did you do cancel the custimizations to avoid having the bloatware loaded on your device? I read at the AT&T forums that one of the consequences of doing this is that you lose HSDPA from the connections tab:
http://forums.wireless.att.com/cng/board/message?board.id=cingular&thread.id=56257&page=2
Maybe this is what happened to you? If it did, you could do a hard reset and it will appear again with all teh bloatware.

Nope. Didn't cancel anything. In fact the list of "missing programs" on that link you posted are ALL on my device EXCEPT the HSDPA program in settings.
Any other ideas?

Same here. I have a Tilt that also does not have the HSDPA setting in options. I use it in Wilmington, Delaware which is a 3G area. I also never get the H symbol when transferring data. However, on the dslreport speed test I get a speed of 432kbps. Might there be a registry setting that serves the same function as the HSDPA button under Connections?
P.S. I did not cancel auto customization and this is a brand new phone with only Opera installed.
432bps is above the 3G Max of 384kbps, so I'm guessing you're in fact in 3G+ already even if the logo isn't there. I get about the same speed with the logo on.

on the Tilt - the default icon for everything is the "E" - and i believe HSDPA may be off by default - there is a file call HSDPASwitch.exe in the \Windows directory - run this and see if the check box is checked - if not check it - not sure how to enable the 3G icon .. yet

Not in mine. Anyone else see this? FYI, I have 3G icon on ALL the time. Well, once yesterday I saw something else (I think it was E). I have never seen H and I've never seen speeds above 200kbps.
And unless I'm wrong, HSDPA is in a lot of the bay area. Any way to determine for sure if HSDPA is in the areas I frequent? Map?

Now that was a good post. Good amount of info. No I hadn't checked "show all files." When I did that, I saw the file you were mentioning. HSDPA was checked.
I had not installed any 3G icon. It's just always been showing 3G (except briefly E over the weekend). Never seen H in 3 days. Never been above 200kbps.

strange - i haven't seen a 3g icon - but see H all the time - but i have done some tweaking - and enabled HSDPA as described above.
sounds like you are in a 3g area most of the time - hopefully you get HSDPA as well.
just reread the post - noticed you said HSDPA was checked - Not sure why you don't get faster speeds - have seen > 1000k
there is also an "enable HSDPA icon" registry setting - don't know of HSDPASwitch sets this or not - i will take a look for it -would at least let you know if the phone thinks it is in HSDPA

To restore the "H" icon when HSDPA data is in use, there's a registry tweak - thanks to HiwayFuzz for the tip:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\OEM\RIL and set EnableHSDPAIcon to 1
This is just an idea for a week now i have talked to reps left and right, tier level 3 from T-Mobile states the 3g is working on 1700 and 2100.
If u dont belive me check for yourself change the band to just utms 2100+800, try to make a video call and i will ask you just for a gsm network, just the same while you are on that band leave yourself a voicemail, you will see it showing up that u have a voicemail, therefor the phone registers to the 3g network.
All we need is a radio with gsm 900+1800 and umts 2100, and tilt users on t-mobile will be able to roam on 3g.
Just want to tank the community here for helping everyone and for giving everyone a chance
Oh btw if you wanna support this idea rate this thread.

Okay, so I changed my UMTS band manually from Auto to 2100+800, left myself a voice mail, and my phone doesn't pick it up that I have a voicemail. My current dialer doesn't have a video call option. Do I need to be in an area where they have 3G already?

You do have to be in an area where they have 3G, i apologize for forgetting to mention that!
You can allso call T-Mobile talk to someone in tech support and see if 3G is available where u live, also confirm that they use the 2100mhz band too
I was looking at some programs like bandswitch to see if i can get it to go on the 2100mhz band

Are you in an area that is supposed to have 3g?
You can check here
http://coverage.t-mobile.com/?MapType=Data&WT.mc_n=3GData_coveragerighttout2WT.mc_t=OnsiteAd
Yes, according to the map I am right in the middle of 3G territory.
I will have to go outside and see what I get, my building seems to shield most of the Tmo signal that is available. I'll try and remember to post back here later - especially if I encounter 3G again!

it would help if you tell us what custom ROM you used AND if that ROM included a Radio. if it didn't include a radio, you should be ok... also, can you get an internet connection? did try going into Phone->Menu->Options->Band Tab->and select WCDMA for GSM and the 850/1900 UMTS band -> click OK and then see if you get a signal? these answers may help us solve your issue.
OK so I found the telstra rom and what back to it. Still could not get 3G. But with that rom I did at least have the 850mhz as an option under settings, phone, band. I was for sure that Houston had the 850mhz but I could be wrong. So now I am on Rom version: 1:19:831:0 (25581) Radio 1.10.25.25. Let me try changing those settings like you suggested. Is your reception good up there in Dallas?
my reception in dallas depends on my location... at home i usually get a solid EDGE signal. i'll get a stronger 3G signal if i go outside. conversely, here in KC, i have a solid 3G signal everywhere i go. so what ROM did you flash to your phone? and did you flash a Radio ROM as well?

Not every area in the US is covered by the 3G 850mhz bandwidth by at&t. I wish the online retailers would put. May work in North America. I'm sure if you traveled around the state a bit you would find that your phone gets 3G in some areas.
I also have the option to select 850 and 1900 GSM & 3G in the settings.

May I ask what rom & radio you are using? The original Telstra rom & radio show under settings, phone, options, bands the 850 spectrum and a bunch of different combinations. I hate the tf3d on the telstra rom because it is loaded with all of there carrier stuff but I want 3G. It seems that when I change roms even if I keep the same original radio I lose all those band spectrums under settings, phone, options, bands. What would you suggest?

i'm running Dutty's 2.1 ROM with the new Manila. i had the same thing happen to me: one minute the Band Tab (under phone settings) are there and the next they're gone. there are 2 fixes i use when this happens: (a) simply soft-reset and they appear or (b) use a registry editor to goto HKLM\Software\OEM\PhoneSetting and then change the setting for ShowUMTSBandPage to 1. Sometimes i have to change the other Show****Page seetings as well. right now, my device is set to Auto for BandType and Network Type and i'm getting the H symbol everywhere i go in Kansas City. i know that once i get back to Dallas, the same settings will cause my signal to vasolate between H and E depending on where i am, e.g., at home it will likely be E. if you didn't flash a different radio, you should be ok. like AllTheWay said, you're probably not in an area with a strong 850 3G signal.

you need another phone, a.k.a., the Telstra Touch HD. you will not be able to get 850 3G with the UK version of the Touch HD.
the telstra hd (T8285) is good to go on AT&T and Tmobile in the US....

another question i have is that i have the EURO HD. (t8282)..
in the BAND TAB (under phone settings) i have the options
UMTS (850 +1900) +GSM (850+1900)
does this mean that my phone will get 3g on an 850 MHZ network?
like AT&T or telstra in australia?

Hi guys,
I brought my first xperia from my phone serivce provider, and it always had the "3g" symbol at the top. However, when my xperia broke, I had to buy another one and got one of ebay. Since I brought the new one, my phone always has the 3 on top. I'm currently using the firestorm valkyrie rom which as the htc interface. When I go to the data connections it says an option (3g) "change to gsm mode" and on is selected. Even when I toggle that, it still always has the E symbol. What do I need to do? I know my sim card is cabable of getting the 3g. But this is a real pain because every now and then my phone just doesnt receive service, so I constantly go onto the comm manager and then it seems to just click that there's service and shows 2-3 bars. Then all of a sudden again after a while there'll be no service. So I'm guessing that's because of the E thing. It shouldn't be my current location as I've never experienced this before.
Is there a setting I can go to to get the 3g symbol? Or a patch I might need for the phone?
Please help
Kindest regards.
You need to change while the connection is not active, I believe. Or... you got the Xperia version incompatible with your network... Or... the ROM is buggy, try another.
sorry, I need to change specificially what when the connection is not active? Say you mean, turn off my phone settings and not connect to the network and then adjust something? It is not the rom. and the seller on ebay has stated that it is a 3g phone - many others have brought it as well with no complaints.
3G settings on x1
Hi
For some reason your phone is only camping on the GSM network (G or E indication depending if your carrier provide GPRS or EDGE on the GSM) instead of the 3G network (which you have been using before).
In settings, communications you should be able to set "3G change to automode" to on,
When this is set your network provider will tell your phone to use the 3G as preffered network, but when coverage is not good enough it will drop you back to 2G (which has a better reach due to lower frequency band).
If it does not happen automatically there might be another setting that is wrong,
goto settings, all settings, personal (tab), Phone.. then choose the "band" tab (need to go to the left with the arrows) , then you have the dropdwn lists to set:
select you network type (need to set auto or wcdma to get 3G)
select your GSM/UMTS band (need to set 900+1800 for europe, 1900+850 for us, dont know who is using 2100+800)
once changed the phone will restart the phone part and search for your carrier in the right band.
good luck
Hi,
Thanks for your reply. I had changed the automode to on. But still had the E.
I went to the setings, and band tab, and i had selected:
Select your network type:
(blank)
Select your GSM/UMTS band:
Auto.
I changed the first oen to auto, and as for the last, here in Australia I'm with Tesltra which is 850 UMTS? I think I read online. Anyway it didn't have the option in there, so I went through them all but wouldnt get service at all except for the first: GSM (900+1800)+UMTS(2100+900). and Auto. I think my last experia might have had auto for all of those too. Anyway with those only two options working, I still get the E icon. Even tried setting aeroplane mode on and then off to see if it might register, but it didn't.

I see , Telstra is one of very few networks that use 850 for WCDMA so they might be using a different RADIO ROM than the rest of us
I saw in the thread below that there is a TELSTRA AUSTRALIA (1.03.841.8) R2AA008 version..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=477801&highlight=telstra
you probably need to flash that one to get the 3G working on telstra..
3 is using the normal 2100 so you could also try with their SIM just to check that there is nothing wrong with your hardware..
Sorry for the late reply.
I have realised that i'm in an area that doesn't support 3g. however my last xperia phone which I brought from telstra was the x1a, which had the next g network - hence I got the 3g symbol. However I have found that that I have the x1i, which doesn't list that network. I rang up telstra, and they transferred me to the sony erricson call centre, and they said you can try and do an update but it is not gaurenteed to get the next g service. I have already flashed a htc rom and don't particluarly want to change it back, unless i'm certain that I will get the next g service.
With the rom you have provided, do you think it will have the UMTS 850 band on there, and my x1i would be able to connect to it? I would have thought that it would be a hardware preference, not a software. In which case, even if I updated the rom because there is say no "chip" that allows for connecting to that band, it wont connec to it even though I may have selected the 850 UMTS band.
Sorry if that seems all over the place, but yeah... I'm not sure.
Doing this will boost call QUALITY & response time between the tower and your phone. It also seems to cut alot of the background noises as well.
1. open dialer
2. *#*#4636#*#*
3. change GSM Auto (prl) to wCDMA preferred.
4. click Enable QXDM SD Log
5. SMSC: -refresh, then long hold update.
6. Scroll to top, run ping test...
7. Once done, hit HOME.... NOT BACK!
if you run into any issues, swap back to GSM-Auto (prl) then update your SMSC number again. By default it loads as GSM-Auto, so if you reboot, you will have to swap it again.
-=-=-=-=-=-
Ive been running like this for around 10 days now and & definitely notice a good gain in call quality, not only in response time, but clarity as well. I don't get any background static and outside wind/other noise seems to drop as well also.
-Leave me feedback and let me know what you think if you try it.

4. Not all phones will... it varies with service.
5. should automatically update, if nothing pops up saying it saved... skip it.

WHAT IS wCDMA... and why is it better than GSM?
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
wCDMA (Wideband Code-Division Multiple Access), an ITU standard derived from Code-Division Multiple Access (CDMA), is officially known as IMT-2000 direct spread. wCDMA is a third-generation (3G) mobile wireless technology that promises much higher data speeds to mobile and portable wireless devices than commonly offered in today's market.
wCDMA can support mobile/portable voice, images, data, and video communications at up to 2 Mbps (local area access) or 384 Kbps (wide area access). The input signals are digitized and transmitted in coded, spread-spectrum mode over a broad range of frequencies. A 5 MHz-wide carrier is used, compared with 200 KHz-wide carrier for narrowband CDMA.
Summary:
1.WCDMA is a 3G technology while GSM is a 2G technology
2.GSM is slowly being phased out in favor of CDMA
3.GSM is still more widespread than CDMA
4.WCDMA and GSM uses different frequency bands
5.WCDMA offers much faster data speeds than GSM
6.WCDMA would soon replace GSM
It's stated in this thread that it's non-dangerous as you can just reboot the phone / change it back. I'll just pop in here with a word of caution: I couldn't.
I have received a significant increase in speed and response time on my data connection since performing this change. I've received significant performance/quality on my conversations over the phone. I can still receive SMS's, however I can no longer send any...
When I attempt to change it back it's already on "GSM auto (PRL)", and I can no longer get the "Enable QXDM SD Log" button when changing to "WCDMA preferred".
I've attempted to change back by ignoring the step that included the "Enable QXDM SD Log" button, but to no avail.
I've attempted to re-flash GOTs 2.2.1 as that should include the most partitions of any flashable ROM, and I had hoped it re-wrote the radio. Apparently it did not.
I basically have a looong night of debugging ahead of me Such is the nature of modding.

My phone is a UK Milestone, one of the first models. I am not sure of the technical term for the model.

Solved it.. The SMSC number was set to 5p41450522.
After some time I found the SMSC (SMS center - responsible for sending SMS on the network) number from my provider. For TDC in Denmark it's +4540390999.
Pressed UPDATE and home button.
NOTE: For non-english phones the menu is translated, and as such the 2 buttons next to the SMSC field may be named the same. The left most button is UPDATE, the right most button is REFRESH. Some languages tend to translate those two words to the same.
The default setting, GSM auto (PRL), will switch to wCDMA when there's a load on the network connection. That is, with a call, a download, or something similar, the phone will accomplish exactly what's been done manually.
The difference is that with this setting, the phone will almost always prefer 3G, meaning you won't have the benefit of using the less power-consuming connection when there's very little load. There has to be almost no traffic for it to step down to 2G.
It won't affect call quality, and if it does, I'm going to go out and state that it's simply a placebo effect. Regardless of which setting you choose, call quality will be the same, as both will have the phone switch to 3G during a call anyways.
One thing you may notice, though. With it set to WCDMA preferred, you may notice a less reliable data connection, and perhaps some dropped calls if you're not in an area with good 3G coverage. GSM auto will prefer 2G network when reception is low, helping to ensure you stay connected.

This is not an issue to me, because ATT is the dominant force here in the south KC metro area, I always have solid signal!
Tag, I did this to see if it fixes my SMS problem.
Thanks to your "wonderful mod" sending SMS didnt work anymore. Make sure you put in the correct SMSC number of your SMS Service Center!
I can no longer send any txt messages after applying this mod, I did a factory wipe and still can't. Any way to revert this?
Took me a while to find the telus SMSC number: +16475800172

here are two that I found:
t mobile +2063130004
at&t +13123149810
sorry to any issues you may have recieved whole doing this... but as always, full nandroid back- ups should be done before adding a new mod. yeah I realize I said there was no harm if this didn't work out, so I'm sorry for that.
Anyways just google for "(your carrier) SMSC address" then correct it if you are having issues.
