The tutorials over at the unlockr are pretty descent. I've had many conversations with David and he is pretty adamant about making sure his videos are accurate. I would start again from the beginning. I tested his tutorials when I unrooted my phone and went back to stock, then rerooted, installed a custom radio, ROM, and theme, then followed his Hero tutorial. The information is sound and worked well for me. This leads me to believe that you aren't following the steps exactly.
And no...... wiping your phone does not take away root access. What ROM are you currently running? Have you installed Cyanogen's recovery image? Have you upgraded your radio and SPL?
No I am trying to get it now but the terminal emulator wont work for me all i get is permission denied
no wiping does not take away root access...
just make sure you have followed instructions to the bone, i personally like this tutorial.

I'm not understanding what you are trying to "get" in terminal emulator. Are you still on the RC29 (DREAIMG.nbh) ROM after you did the root steps? If that is the case and you are getting permission denied when you su, then it seems as though your rooting was unsuccessful. You might want to check your steps again. If you mean its the ROM you are trying to get in terminal, just download the custom ROM to your computer, rename it to update.zip and flash it. No need for terminal to do this.....Flash the ROM you want and all your troubles will disappear with a fresh install. Its like a do-over haha
Also, you left several of my questions from above unanswered...the process of troubleshooting works best when you provide requested information....
And as Tarantino5 ^^above^^ me pointed out, your title leaves a lot to be desired. I brief statement of the problem is all the title need include.
i got it working...thanks for all your help...and sorry about the title i was just worried about my phone...thanks
Sounds good, glad it worked out...could you please edit your title so it has a [SOLVED] it front of it similar to the other threads? Its just a small way of keeping track of whats still unanswered...thanks

Hello Guys,
I’m a Sprint HTC Hero owner who is trying to get CM 6.1
My device has the latest OTA update 2.32.651.2
I went ahead and tried z4root which has 2 options, temporary and permanent. Went ahead and did temporary and it stated that it was rooted. Superuser shows up in my apps, so I went ahead and installed ROM manager as a youtube video said (gave a full successful walkthrough)…I open ROM Manager up and it says – You must root your phone for ROM Manager to function. Superuser was not found at “/system/bin/su” or “/system/xbin/su”.
Now using Astro File Manager, I checked those directories and it wasn’t there as ROM Manager stated, but in my SD Card, I see su-2.3.1-bin-signed…
Now my question is, should I try it with permenant root?
If not, what is the recommended next step?
Should I delete/uninstall everything I have that’s related to my previous root attempt and do the following:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=804296
I’m an Accounting major and a noob at this stuff…and I see people helping each other out here which is awesome, but I get confused trying to keep up with some posts where people are sent to other posts and so forth :/
Thank u in advance! Happy Holidays!
-------------------------------------------
Below is the process on a step by step basis from which i was able to complete it with the help of skndeep102. Thanks again buddy!
-Download z4root here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833953
-Install and run app, press on Permenant Root
-Let it run until it says it has completed
-Once it has completed you will see the Superuser app in your drawer
-Download Rom Manager from the Market
-Open Rom Manager and press on Flash ClockworkMod Recovery at the top (give it a bit as it has to download it and then install)
I had already downloaded the CM 6.1 rom and had it on the SD card
-So i went ahead and hit reboot to recovery in ROM Manager
-Once it is in recovery, go ahead and scroll down to Nandroid and do a backup
-once you do a back up press back and reboot
-Once it starts up again head over to ROM Manager and select Install ROM from SD Card
-Look for the Rom, select it, and it asks you to Wipe Device and Cache, select both
-It reboots to recovery, select the rom and install
I hope i didnt miss a step, but thats pretty much it if i remember it correctly (spent much more time reading than actually doing, lol) Also, if there is something that isnt touched upon here just go ahead and read through as several questions were asked and answered along the way.
Hope it helps!
* Process confirmed to still be working as of 1/5/2011

I used permanent root when I did this
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
i am in the same position...the recommendation to me was to RUU to an older version and then root. I am not sure how to do that, so im hoping someone has another solution.
I personally dont trust those one click root options. Manual root requires a little more reading but I have never had an issue that way.
You can always try the permanent option. I dont see why you wouldnt want permanent anyway. If you use the temporary, its gonna unroot you when you reset your phone.

Did the permenant root allow you to continue with the process?
RUU back to an older version just requires that you have the htc drivers installed and the ruu exe. You just double click the ruu exe and follow the instructions.

I'm in the process of trying it...its been stuck at Rebooting for a couple mins now... :/
Wait and see at this point, i guess...
OK so I did the permenant root...and appearantly it worked since z4root is telling me it is and it now gives me the option to re-root and undo root...Also, when I open Rom Manager, it isn't telling me to root the phone...
However, I saw in another forum that a way to check if it is rooted is to download a terminal emulator and type in "su" after the $ ...When i do that it tells me permission denied....
What next?

It says that I must have ClockworkMod Recovery installed to flash and restore roms.
Where do I get this?
Just a heads up, it seems the root works, the su file is in bin and i tested out drocap2 screencapture app and gave it superuser permission. Worked perfectly...now if i could know where to get ClockworkMod Recovery as the Rom Manager I got from the market did not bring it :/
Use the "un-option" and try another method. I installed a stock ruu on my phone this morning to update my prl and tried the same app. It doesn't flash everything you need like the "flash_image" file. You need that to flash a recovery. I just re-rooted my phone the same way I did back in July. Take note that I am with cellular south and all I had to do is run a batch file and oila, there I am sitting in recovery. If you want to try another "root via app" method, you can try this-->View attachment UniversalAndroot.apk .
Instructions:
Open app and root
Download Rom Manager(which you have) and flash cm recovery.
I still think it probably won't work, but you can try anyway. I think these "rooting apps" only do enough so you can use apps like "AddFree"(or whatever it is) and others like it.
EDIT: In Rom Manager, the very first tab(up at the top) should say"Flash ClockworkMod Recovery". Press that one. It would ever flash for me until I went back to me nandroid.

quick question, performance difference between stock 2.1 and lets say most roms out there a huge difference?
anyone else care to throw some input into my situation?
Happy Holidays btw...
Just a heads up, what worked for me, once I was rooted and downloaded ROM Manager I had to install Superuser.apk, then when I tried to flash clockwork recovery I got the Superuser dialog box asking for permission, then select allow. another awesome program to help is Android Commander that you install on your PC and it provides a gui adb access but you have to have sdk and adb installed on your pc, but if you look around there is info about it available. hope this helps, wish i had more time but i was just home on my lunchbreak, good luck

Phone: HTC Hero w/ chin
Carrier: Alltel
Story:
Switched from WM6 Palm Treo Pro to HTC Hero. Came with 2.1 and needed apps2sd. Want CM7 stable.
-Rooted using AndRoot.
-Installed SuperUser and Root Checker. Root Checker said I was good to go. SuperUser would not show any apps in the list this whole time.
-Installed Titanium Backup which said I needed BusyBox, but it would fail to install. Tried to install busybox and it said I was not rooted. Alright...
-Installed ClockworkMod and flashed recovery. Tried to reboot into clockwork recovery, but when I clicked it, it did nothing. When I clicked rom from sd card, and clicked the CM7, it said 'going to reboot now' but again, nothing happened.
I booted into recovery manually, but it was still in Android system recovery. Apparently there was some sort of rooting problem, so I tried z4root. Permanent root was stuck on 'rebooting', and temporary root said successful, but something was still wrong as BusyBox installer would say I was not rooted, and SuperUser app didn't show any programs to allow permissions.
I turned the phone off, and back on. It goes to the white 'HTC' screen, reboots, and then comes to a black page with a picture of a Hero and a red triangle and exclamation mark. I hold home and hit power, and it takes me into the Android system recovery. I wiped data and cleared cache, rebooted, and it does the same thing.
- - -
Now i've done many hours of research, and found nothing to help me. I guess i'm a bit confused on what the SDK does and how to use it, because it won't connect to my phone since I can't even boot my phone into the OS. I tried to download the RUU and rename it update.zip, but it says signature verification failed or not found in android recovery. I've done the clear data method by holding home, back, and power, but still nothing.
I need a clearcut answer for getting back to a stock Alltel 2.1 OS on my phone. I am more advanced than a basic user, and have flashed many roms on Windows Mobile, but remember I might not exactly understand everything.
I'm a silent browser on these forums but now I come to you guys for help. I hope to grow into a dev and hopefully help someone in the future in my position.
I read somewhere to wipe EXT2, but still confused on that process as it seems I don't know how to get into adb command line on my computer.
Try reflashing the cwm recovery. Sounds like you have no recovery image.
-----
Sent from my CDMA Hero. I got some hot Gingerbread-on-Hero action here!
Dumb question...did you flash a ROM? Maybe I missed it in your post, but I see you installed Clockwork, SuperUser and all that, but don't see that you flashed a ROM. *EDIT* I see you did...
So...worst case scenario, if you can't even boot your phone, just start over from scratch...
Download the original AllTel ROM from here.
If you don't have HTC Sync set up and can't restore from your computer, use this method to flash it...your phone should now boot...
Then try to reroot, using this (preferred) or this.
Download ROM Manager from the Market and install ClockworkMod Recovery
Boot to recovery (hold home and power at the same time).
Once in recovery, wipe cache, system, data and boot (make sure you don't wipe your sd card! Do it twice for good measure)
Select install .zip from SD card, select zip and you should be good to go with a rooted phone and a new ROM.
I think that should cover it...
Ok, on your first link to flash my phone, the step says:
"With phone powered on, do "adb reboot bootloader" to enter fastboot."
How do I get the command prompt on my computer to communicate with the phone? That was my biggest problem when reading other people's posts. I guess i'm a bit lost. I installed the r10 android sdk which I believe is the first step? And when my phone is connected to the computer to enter these commands, is it okay if it is sitting at that screen with the red triangle?
Thanks for your help btw your steps sound simple, and simple is nice. One step closer!
Do you have HTC Sync set up? If you do, you should be able to restore from that to get you back to official AllTel...That's going to be the easiest way to get you back to stock I think.
And...I am on a Mac So, helping someone on a PC is not my forte with ADB
I'd try setting up HTC Sync and get yourself back to stock that way.
EDIT - To get it to communicate, you need to set up ADB and all that. Then just use command prompts...Try this thread for help/instructions.
I actually got it to load that rom with vol down + power but eventually got to 'CID incorrect! Update fail!', so i'll try connecting to sync.

What ROM? The AllTel one?
I have to take off until about 8:30 or so...get yourself set up with HTC Sync and get the USB drivers and all that set up, first thing you need to do is get your computer to talk to your phone...download the official AllTel RUU and restore to stock. That's task 1
Then we'll get ya rooted
I think I found a rom that worked. Currently rebooting. I can follow the rest and if I need anymore help, I'll give you a hollar. I should have had it right the first time, but I was following about 5 sets of different directions and mixing them around to avoid certain programs. I like yours though.

It's tough sometimes to follow things...and as much as we always tell people to search, ya know, the search kinda sucks I searched for all the threads I linked for you, but I knew what I was looking for. If you don't know what to look for, searching is kinda tough. Glad you got it!
Now...if you want a real ROM, I'll just toss this one out there In all actuality, CM7 and aospCMod are quite similar, I am just partial to aosp's builds.
Let me know if you need any more help.
Yep, I broked it.
So, wanna hear a fun story?
I got a free Hero, and tried to root it. First thing I tried was z4root. It failed. Then I tried RegawMod. Fail. Perhaps it didn't help that I had the latest stock version of the Hero, 2.32.651.x
So, then, me being a wise guy, decided that I'd just try doing it myself through ADB. I tried to follow CyanogenMod adb rooting instructions HERE. I kept getting stuck at step 5:
chmod 755 /data/local/tmp/rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin
Click to collapse
It kept saying something about how it couldn't chmod "/data/local/tmp/rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin" because it wasn't a directory. Well, duh, this I know...but I couldn't figure out how to make adb understand that.
Well of course, because I couldn't chmod rageagainstthecage, I couldn't move on to the next step, actually running ratc:
/data/local/tmp/rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin
Click to collapse
Now, this is where the fun really begins. I rebooted the Hero, just to see if that would help, and then I was going to try again. Trouble is, the phone wouldn't boot. Kept getting stuck on an endless boot on the HTC screen. So, I went into clockworkmod, wiped everything (except boot), and then restored the nandroid backup I had made before I started this whole process. Still no dice. Still stuck at an endless HTC boot screen. I tried a hard reset on the fastboot menu just for ****s and giggles...but still nothing doing. I also tried running the RUU app on my computer to install an older version of the stock ROM, but RUU would not recognize my device (even though HTC sync and ALL of the drivers are installed, and I had it mounted to the computer in clockworkmod).
So...I guess my question is - does anyone have any clue how to fix this? I still want to root the damn thing, but right now I'd be happy just to get the stock rom back up and running. I know if I could find a stock ROM I could probably flash it through clockworkmod...alas, the only one I found turned out to be a corrupt zip file.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

look here for the RUU.zip made by tehdarkknight, get it. Then run in with the instructions from jasonmaloneys thread about fastboot without s-off. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1063843

My story is similar. Boot into hboot stay in fastboot mode and DO NOT VOL DOWN. once youve booted into hboot, plug the hero In and get the ruu started up. Once you've started the ruu, if you get the connection error message, click the action button (trackball) on 'fastboot usb mode' and for some reason, the ruu seemed to connect to it then. Hope it works out for ya.

Hey,
For the past 6 hours i've been trying to root my Incredible S so i can install ICS 4.0.3 and i've just had no luck!
I have absoloutly no 'rooting' experience (jailbreak experience, yes) and i have no idea how to install custom firmware/images/roms ect.
For the first 4 hours i just tried to get rid of S-on, after reading through about 50 articles i gave up and was told to go to htcdev.com and unlock my bootloader, which is done but i can't root the phone!
I've tried the following:
HTC Supertool v3 - Unlocked my bootloader but failed with 'S-on', said my phone was rooted but is not...
SuperOneClick - Looks like it worked but didn't...
Unlock Root - 'Failed to access Shell root'
Universal Androot - Incompatible
z4root - First time, got stuck on 'Running exploit in order to obtain root access'
Second time, got to 'Attempting to apply root' and stayed like that forever (tried removing battery and restarting)
My phone may (MAY!) be rooted, i was told to download ConnectBot and if it had '$' i was not rooted but if i had '#' i was, nevertheless it came up with '$'....
Please help! I am desperate to get TRUE ICS (and none of that ****ty HTC ICS thats coming soon...)
Thanks, Danz207
UPDATE!!
I had z4root version 1.10, so i upgraded to 1.30 and this time the second step was called 'Acquiring root shell' or something like that and then it closed, but it wasn't a crash, it faded out within half a second. Anyway i opened 'Rom Manager' and it told me that i needed to root first and ConnectBox still has '$'.......
