what kind of file types do you download?
Do you use a converter?
I downloaded some movies from this blackberry movies site and that was fine. But none of the videos I have on my computer work.
YEA..I ACTUALLY HAVE Clash of the titans, and harold and kumar on my HERO. i used Xilisoft Convertor and converted it. Works great on the phone.

do you just convert everything to mp4?
I use Allok works great
DivX is one the most popular format for videos for computers, but only one app (yxplayer)will play them. It cost $20, and doesn't work anymore. It worked in 1.5, but after a few rom flashes on my part and updates on their part, it would freeze the video randomly. If there is a way I could pull the apk from one of my old nands, when it was still xyplayer, it might work.

An awesome conversion program, then use mVideoplayer from the market. It remembers your brightness setting for watching movies, the position you were in the movie if you tab out to do something else and come back, you'll be ready to pick up right where you were. Even has srt/sub title support for those like myself who watch subbed anime on the go.
Terrific player + handbrake makes crunching movies down into the correct file type and size (480x320) a cinch.
i was hoping someone would ask that question. Try the videoplayer.apk from the droidx
what does that play.

Please post the Handbrake settings you used to convert videos for the Hero.
I haven't looked at HB in quite awhile. Does the latest version come with a default Android profile?

Im gonna keep it simple. Use Videora Android Coverter. I download .avi files or .mp4 and convert them using these setting.
H.264/.mp4 >500kbps
aac/96kbps

320x480

Same Specs, only with HandBrake.

Thanks, I will try converting some podcasts with those specs in HandBrake and see how it comes out playing in DoubleTwist. I feel like you can't put the Hero through too much before it will start to become way too laggy or something.... haha

When you convert the film DVD files (using say DVDFab) you can convert them with subtitles.....mind you, the text is so small that its impossible to read...good luck though mate, you must have fantastic eyesight
Rather than watching a movie with subtitle, I would like to have a music player that display lyrics. Anyone got a suggestion?

I take it you use dvdfab? Are you willing to share the settings you use that are best for the diamond?
I’m looking for a video converter and got the dvdfab trial.
maybe there is a subtitle plugin for TCPMP that works on diamond? And then convert subtitles to smi. Is it possbile?
you can used pocket divx encoder its freeware just google it!
you can use it to hard encode the subs onto the video.
not sure how your gonna be able to read em tho!
so i know theres a few posts about this but i cant find the one that works. i want to rip some episodes off a dvd and put it on the phone. ive been trying on handbrake all day and it wont work. it plays back all choppy on the computer and phone. please help is there a better program to rip dvds???
I use dvddecrypter to rip and autogk for converting. That being said I haven't used It for the captivate yet.

If you want to start easy, just rip with the movie to mobile option and pick iPhone. It should work fine.
Well to anyone who wants to know... I used dvdfab and just ripped using the generic type and then saved it to the sd card on my phone and it plays perfectly. so if theres any of yall that cant do it then just follow what i did. download dvdfab and then pick source from dvd then click rip and then generic and then start. let it finish then mount your phone to computer then drag and drop movie to sd card. done and done...

I find if i pick iPhone and then change the screen resolution to match the 480 x 800 pixels (depends on the movie ratio) - that i get a slightly smaller file size then doing generic. I also found MP4 smaller then MKV.
Here's a program you can buy for $9.95 or you can also just download the free version for the Droid Incredible which has the same resolution as the Galaxy S. http://www.tools4movies.com/
The only videos I have on my Cappy are frlm youtube. I download ek from youtube in flv format and use handbreak to convert them to mp4 and they play without issue. Ive been wandering what video codecs are supported. Ive successfully played h.264 720p brrips flawlessly off my sd card(class4) and couldnt be happier.
As far as Im aware, the Cappy is sorta like the PS3...add a file and it should play. I have found out that it dosent really like flv..soooo..I convert all my youtube ahit to mp4 and leave all my brrips as the are and everything plays fine.

Torrents..lol
From what I've read, it's a long drawn out process that really sucks and I have no idea how it's done.
Sorry.
. .
I use DVD Decrypter to rip the DVD then AutoGK to convert it to xvid. Transfer the movies to my SD and it plays perfectly. I also have Rock Player instead of the stock media player. Doing a comparison between the two there is a slight improvement on the quality using Rock Player.
I love this phone more than the iPhone but I just give up on uploading movies. I can upload music with no problem but movies forget it. I'm using handbrake and I get the same result: sound good....but video scrambled and choppy. I have followed the post on how to upload videos using handbrake but I'm having no luck with it. Any ideas???
very strange man, i also followed them as the guy instructed, but for me the playback is amazing.
Yeah that's strange. I have Total Recall , lord of the rings , and pulp fiction all look and run perfect. All made with hand brake.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Test it on your computer first, if the video is still messed up then it's an encoding error.
Personally, I think DVDFab's ease of use makes it a better alternative to handbrake. DVD and BluRay decryption is built in, and in one click I can have it Rip a movie to iPhone format. I use one more click to change screen size for captivate - but this doesn't really have to be done. They update this app regularly - i bought the platinum edition long ago, and it has not failed me.
Give Rockplayer a try to see if you have better results as far as playback goes.

I will try a different movie and see if that works. Just Samsung would make a program for the phone that makes this an easier job to do. This is the only draw back to this phone, most people dont have the time or skills to do this. Just my 2 cents.
Pardon my arrogance, but it appears as though you're trying too hard. I drag and drop my mp4 movies from my laptop to my Captivate with Windows Explorer. They work like a champ.

DVDFab is as easy as it gets and they have a 15 day trial - put your disk in, say DVD to Mobile; pick iPhone and you are done. No phone manufacturer makes a tool for ripping DVDs - mainly because it violates the DMCA in the US.
If you want an iTunes like solution, then in a few days you can buy your shows via the Samsung mediahub. Point and Click.
Hi Guys & gals.
Since VLC player has already been ported to iPhone 4, & the sources available for anyone to comile it for any other platform of his/her choice, what's stopping someone from porting it?
Advantages:
- dont bother about conversion, can play all.
- many others that are not apperent to me as of now .
The source code page - http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-sources.html
I know this thread doesn't belong in this forum, will be tossed to the appropriate one at appropriate time by appropriate people & I welcome it.
i still prefer mVideoPlayer
yeah, advantage "dont bother about conversion" is kinds pontless - we already can play everything.
would be cool if we could watch divx-streams

same thing applies: we have something like mvideoplayer on SGS, why not on iPhone?
VLC uses software decoding/rendering to display movies. This sucks. Bad.
mVideoPlayer uses the on device codecs, which use the on device GPU to decode/render movies. This is way, way better.
So yeah, VLC can be ported, but I doubt anybody will put in the kind of insane work required when mVideoPlayer is available - with mVideoPlayer on an SGS being the best (by far) video solution for any mobile device available.
+1 for this

To be honest vlc suks big time even on windows. You can download many-many players that look better, work faster, have more options, play same amount of file types and do it faster.
Window media player classic is a good one. Search for CCCP on Google. I only use VLC for region locked DVDs.
VPlayer is good enough?

mVideoPlayer does NOT play all formats, like .rm (Real Media Codec) which VLC does.

What format are the movies? And did you download them from iTunes? It's possible that a.) they are an unsupported format, which depending on the format a 3rd party video player might be able to play them and/or b.)they have drm and can only be played by iTunes or an iTunes device like an iPad or Apple TV

I had problems with VLC player last night. I put a TV show, .mkv on it, and it was definitely choppy at times and got color distortion at times.
Those digital copies are usually loaded with DRM.
I mean, totally makes sense to copy protect a copy you're giving to someone who actually paid for the full version.

Does this VLC link work for people? I got it installed, and it comes up, prompts me that it's beta and may cause my kittens to die a premature death, and then within 2 or 3 seconds promptly crashes/closes. I've tried several times and same result. Anyone got a fix?

No go on that.....I've tried all the players for some reason its not working
I'm pretty sure it's because of DRM issues.
All the movies I backup on my MacBook are in .m4v format... I just change the file extension to .mp4 and all is good for playing on my phone and Windows pc's. If that doesn't work then it has to be DRM issues.
