ADB Pushed Ringtone Problem. - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all,
I was wondering what causes a rooted Android phone to not use custom contact ringtones?
The ringtones I've assigned to my contacts have been pushed ( with adb push command ) to the phone's system memory, and I can see them in there using Root Explorer ( File Manager ). This only seems to happen when I use a task manager like Advanced Task Manager to End All.. uh... stuff running, I guess.
Is there a process or something that I can put on the exclude list to stop it from cutting off my custom ringers if that's the problem?
Oddly enough, even if I do End All of anything, my microSD card still uses my default ringtone on the phone, though, just the default ringtone, not even the custom contacts set from there work.
Here's a bit more info on what apps I normally use and phone info:
Advanced Task Manager
CacheMate
Firmware: 2.1-update1
Software: 2.27.651.5 ( Rooted )

So, first of all, did you push the custom ringers to /system/media/audio/ringtones/? (FYI, you know you can just put u'r custom ringtones to u'r SD card under /sdcard/media/audio/ringtones/ and you won't have to waste system space...) aside from that fact, you need to make sure u've pushed u'r ringtones to the system/media/audio/ringtones/ directory in the phone. Once you've done that, you shouldn't have any problems accessing them via android's native ringtone selector.

Thank you for the reply Androidious.
Yes, I pushed the ringtones correctly to /system/media/audio/ringtones/. Accessing them isn't the problem though, it's simply that there's a process that controls ringtones, and I'm trying to figure out which it is so I can put it on an exclude list from my Task Manager.
Here's a list of processes that run when my phone is turned on and everything is working:
Sprint Navigation
People
com.smithmicro.DM
Maps
IM
IM
Htc Checkin Service
Sprint Updater
Meebo IM
Updater
Note Me
CacheMate
Messages
Voicemail
Gmail
Settings
Is it possible that the People process controls ringtones?

Removing apps from stock rom (not through a kitchen)

I have a stock HTC Touch Diamond. I am wanting to remove the apps I don't use like Messenger and some others. I tried through ActiveSync but because they are built into the ROM they do not show up. Is there an app or something I can use to remove these?
Thanks

SKTools will allow you to remove apps that are installed on your device that don't show up in the Remove Programs part of Settings.
Also, you could hard reset your device and soft reset before customizations run and then install only the apps that you want.
Or, use activesync and browse to Windows-Start Menu-Programs and delete the program shortcuts that you don't want to see. Though with this option all you are doing is removing the program shortcut the program files are still there.
I tried SKTools but under the installed programs section it only shows the ones I have installed. I wanted to remove the likes of WLM, YouTube etc. I ripped all the ROM data (following one of the tutorials, so I have 4 RAW files but not sure how to combine them back to an NBH file so I can edit them in a kitchen to remove what I don't want.)
Ok well I managed to reconstruct the ROM but I have no idea how successful I actually was at doing such. I followed the steps here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=337066. I really want to put this ROM on the phone http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=622093 but I am afraid that if I screw up the flashing and my reconstructing of the stock ROM didn't work that I would be screwed. Any suggestions? Also my provider doesn't make the ROM available and neither does HTC (for Rogers that is).
In SKTools if you go to the Installed Programs Section click on the right softkey and select settings.
Then scroll down to "Show Applications Not Listed As Installed." Change the setting to Yes.
Maybe then you can remove what you want.
Also, you can use the Move Data part to move files, folders, and applications to Internal Storage to free up space.
Believe it or not but that is not an option under settings that will show Applications not listed as Installed... running SKTools 4.5.1.4.
Scratch that. I found it

[Q] moving apps from rom to rom?

here goes guys and gals,
-i'm proficient at flashing to stock ji and jf using odin
-i know how to use master clear as well
-i know how to root/unroot using several methods: apps like oclf, update.zip, oneclick root(one i use the most), and android-sdk-command prompt (longer but my preferred method)
-i know how to backup and restore apps using titanium backup(donate user)
-i know how to use rom manager to restore and backup roms
-i know how to navigate the clockwork mod recovery
-i know the basic CWM menu items by heart (ie: install, choose from sd card, etc)
-i DON'T know the more complicated menu item in CWM (ie: advanced restore, etc)
-i know how to enable/disable lagfixes but i don't know what any of it means (ie: ext4, ext2, "overkill", jfs, rfs, etc)
the past weekend i've been flashing several different roms using CWM trying to find the perfect one for me. i have install/backed up right now: espyel 3.0, espyel 3.5, axura 2.3, cog 2.3oc-uv. these 4 roms have the components to what i want for my phone.
what i want to know how to do is, for instance, if i like espyel 3.5 the most for how it looks or whatever, but it's missing some apps that are included in one of the other roms, how can i move those apps over to the ROM i'm using? and also, there's little things niggling me, like how the android keyboard (the one i use) doesn't vibrate when i press characters(i've checked in the keyboard settings vibrate when pressed), how do i fix that?
is there a tutorial some where that shows me how to move apps around from one rom to another? once i know what app i want, how do i know which apk and associated files are needed?
the apps i really need are the
1. stock samsung alarm clock (for the smart alarm that doesn't JOLT me awake), 2. the other clock app (don't know the name) but it's like a desktop/dock type thing; it has 4 buttons along the bottom for weather, news, clock, and music.
3. voltage control
4. most importantly, the stock (i think?) android music app. this is the one that when you select an album, it shows the album art in the background behind the song in that album. i think it also comes with different sized widgets. this one just has the best feel, imo.
5. i know there's some missing but here goes.
thanks in advance for sparing me cheeky condescension/use the search flames
1. stock samsung alarm clock (for the smart alarm that doesn't JOLT me awake),
Um - Standard Tibu backup/restore should work find for this.
2. the other clock app (don't know the name) but it's like a desktop/dock type thing; it has 4 buttons along the bottom for weather, news, clock, and music.
This sounds like Desk Home - You can either Tibu Backup - or find the apk inside of the ROM's *.zip file under /system/app and possibly just install it to the new ROM by copying the necessary *.apk file to your SD Card and using your File Manager to install it.
3. voltage control
This one is probably a no-no - if it isn't in the ROM your updating too most likely its due to the kernel that cooker is using. I wouldn't recommend installing it as it would have already been there if it had the correct kernel.
4. most importantly, the stock (i think?) android music app. this is the one that when you select an album, it shows the album art in the background behind the song in that album. i think it also comes with different sized widgets. this one just has the best feel, imo.
Again - should either be able to do a standard Tibu backup or find it in the ROM under /system/data for the *.apk. and you could try installing it on the new ROM and it should replace it. But... this might not work as sometimes the cooker of the ROM does some strange stuff.

[Q] Move ringtones to internal memory

Hello, I would like to move my ringtones to the internal memory because I've noticed that since I started using Swap, It delays the ringtone from starting. This is what I observed, Randomly the ringtone starts after 2 or 3 vibrates, other times its not at all and uses the stock beeping ringtone (I guess since the SD is being used, it cant go in it and get the ringtone) So bottom line, My ringtones take a few seconds to ring after a few vibrates. I already know that I have to convert them to .ogg, but does anyone know another way to make the system pull up the ringtone faster?
I would like to know that myself. Im sick of having my default ringtone going when i selected a custom one for one of my contacts. whats the best settings for the ogg files too as this may be helpful to us both

Alright... So you wanna do this, here is what you will need:
*ADB Installed and working
*Root Manager of some sort
*Format Factory -This is freeware, so it's not warez.
1st, Download and install Format Factory. This is the program I use for everything. If you have one of your own preference, it can be substituded.
**Do a custom install, as this will try to install adbars otherwise. (You have been warned.)
2nd, Open Format Factory and click "All to OGG".
3rd, Select your ringtones and click "ok". On the next screen, click "Start"
4th, Open your Root Explorer program, I use Android Commander
5th, With your Root Explorer program, navigate to your newly created OGG files (normally found in Documents/FFOutput on your PC) in the Root Explorer.
6th, Move these files to /system/media/*** on your phone. And you are done.
Please note: ""***" represents the respective folders. i.e. "ringtones", "notifications", etc.
Hope this helped you. Click "thanks" if it did. - Any questions, ask.
EDIT: DO NOT change the OGG settings in Format Factory. They work fine at default. Once you get used to, and comfortable with doing this, then play with the settings to get your desired file size and quality.
I tried doing what you said, but although I successfully managed to push the files, they still don't appear in the ringtone/notifications menu

did you make sure the phone looked for new media, or restart ya phone? i had to do it with mine
I was going to say that I had checked the phone after restart and they still weren't showing up - but I double checked again and now they are. Thanks! I'm not sure how to check for new media, though - is there a procedure for this?
Been trying this using ES File Explorer but keeping getting a message that paste failed. Any ideas where i'm going wrong.
I have S-Off and root
you can try this, it a little easier if you have the tools but yoo have to reflash the rom so be sure to backup your apps, contacts blah blah blah...
1. unzip the 'rom.zip' file, open the folder and look for the system/media/audio folder
2. now you can add & remove ringtones, notifications, alarm sounds that you want or dont want...
3. zip the rom file back up
4. sign it with an auto sign program... (very simple to use)
5. flash rom and enjoy your customizations
6. restore your backed up contacts and apps...
(you can also remove some unwanted stock apps to save space, be sure not too remove system required apps though lol)
Cheers Idrifta, ended up getting it to work using Root Explorer.
o nice!!! haha good to know... better than my method lol
The following worked for me.. Check this
I followed a link and it worked for me on jfltetmo running on cm11-m9 and having twrp v2.8.4.0. I explained the steps in my answer here: How to install a ringtone into internal memory?. All the credit for the steps go to villo-2.

Custom Message Tone

Hey guys
So I have copied 2 custom sound files to my phone 1 for the ringtone and one for messages, they both show up and work fine when browsing via the ringtone selection menu however when trying to select either from the messages selection window they are not there ?
any ideas ?
You need to put new sounds in to right directory. Use root explorer.... For messages - system/media/audio/notification
Restart phone and new tones will be added to the list.

If you don't have just do a new folder it works,
/sdcard/Notifications
it will work as well for alarms and ringtones in COSTUM room with no root, it will work as well if you create in exsdcard...
Yeah, you're right, I'm always rooted and totally forgot about this. Thanks.

[XT907 Rom][Mod][UnLocked boot] Telstra JB 4.1.2-9.8.2Q-SD Swap, Xposed...

Update Why are people using v0 & not v3? V3 has less issues & both have the "no visable dialer issue" for those using stock data. The dialer is fuctional but you have no access without a play dialer app. Now is the time to try out those ones with many features above stock, not really a problem. Stock cannot sort out non phone number contacts- just one limitation of the invisible dialer.
I really like this app! https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=imoblife.startupmanager.full
Even the free version works well. Some apps show as user when they are not. I have it set to boot so that only 12 apps are running yet when I call for one of the "disabled" apps it works.
Use cwmr only.
Still no Dialer for those coming from stock ...79 or ...94.
Get this! https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=intelgeen.rocketdial.pro
It has Many features. The bad review on the info page is a BAD REVIEW!
I am back on this as I still find it superior to even 98.30.1 for many things but Bluetooth in particular- connectivity & audio volume.
I found a path for all unlocked Vzw stock'ers, on 98.18.78 (same as 9.8.1Q-78) OR 98.18.94, to upgrade to a newer kernel and have a built in SD swap.
The first rom you flash is just a simple work around for Vzw users.
A facilitator that alters something in a way that Telstra needs to boot with your data partition.
Don't want to stay on this rom. Restore your former system & boot of any of the previous ones & keep your current data! That is right do not wipe data coming or going!
Those on Mhous33's DST or Deodexed roms may not need the Moparman371's facilitator flash. Testing.... Deodexed & DST works on their own!
Dialer & contacts show in launcher.:good::good::good:
Steps needed to install:
DO NOT WIPE ANY DATA!
Start on the newest ...94 OTA or Factory (or the one before ...78) [...66 alpha tester you are]
Start with your activated & rooted (vzw) stock (unlocked bootloader only)
Make sure you have booted up & done google login & used the stock messaging.
Go CWMR (6.0.1.3 or greater, TWRP will not install the attached rom). (see goodies for flashables)
Backup!
Mount system (& keep data- do not wipe anything)
Flash (install) http://d-h.st/2iE {Mhous33 rom users may skip}
Reboot system.
ReRoot on boot is ok but not needed.
Be sure stock messaging works.
Go cwmr
Wipe Cache & Dalvik
Flash/install the the attached rom.
Reboot. Answer NO at the disable recovery flash until xposed (or is it philz?) is set up & the nag is gone!
Update su binary.
Launch Xposed Installer.
Go Framework>Install/Update>reboot.
Ditto>Modules>Check the ones you want, there should be 4.
Reboot.
Enjoy.
Notes on this Rom:
Most important) DO NOT try to activate this system with Google login as you would a normal Rom.
It must be activated via your currently activated data partition.
Vzw users: You will never be able to do a privacy > factory data reset OR a recovery data wipe on this rom. Doing so & then rebooting will bork your radio partition & result is 3g only, but this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2391641
is the fix if you do.
Rarely): The Xperia launcher will need to be restarted when you see no home shortcuts visible right after a boot up. : Go app drawer> 3dots> launcher settings > swipe, move right to end > restart launcher.
I have found there were some apps causing this.
1) Use the Razr data widget at your own risk when on vzw it can break the radio.
2) Telstra base from ZaYAC-ua http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2246081
3) Updated with: ...94
a) SM_BP_101032.021.32.80P baseband. I did this BB change recently & I am now noticing that ...78p BB is better WiFi connector, SO v3 has this BB now. flash this from recovery to get the Rabbit's original BB back: http://205.196.123.79/enfc9t0cjpog/06j4ygdmdhxlm22/xt907-98.18.78p-radio.zip
b) contacts.apk
4) BusyBox 1.21.1 Stephen (Stericson)
5) Xposed Framework http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1574401
Something in the framework/modules does away with the nagging "disable recovery flash" yet install-recovery.sh is let to do it's init.d duties.
6) GravityBox 285 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2316070
7) USB Mass Storage: My note on use & original thread (at bottom) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2566065
8) Jeeko's ◢ PurePerformances™X ◣ mod: http://forum.xda-developers.com/editpost.php?do=updatepost&p=48390090
9) SD swap: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2566065
10) PureAudio mod: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2557240
11) /system/app mover
This is a handy tool to maintain the Xposed apps that are sys apps. Use it to update the FW/Modules & put them back in system as they work better there. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.j4velin.systemappmover&hl=en
12) Rom Manager is handy for a quick recovery reflash. I hope Phil3759 & crew will fix it so some of the home backup/restore features can work on our M. More on RM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=44045970#post44045970
Notes on attachments & etc:
Lenovo cam & gallery up. Use only as a data app, will bomb if a sys app.
Lenovo Super Camera v3.5.5.0128.130812.19126.apk http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2427015
Philz v6 clone rom : Do not use "current rom" as the source in the creation steps, only "from a backup" has worked for me.
Other issues with Philz : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2545120
Notes are WIP
Mega link is up
V 3 is up.

Coming from DST...i didnt delete anything, wiped dalvik and cache, installed zip but phone wont boot up now - stuck on moto boot up image.
Any ideas?

Cool thanks for help...
Yea confirm that touch pal works fine, i found an apk online...everything else seems to be mostly working, including bluetooth which is great! subjectively it also seems to be getting better reception too, but its hard to say for sure.
Only problem i can see is that my sdcard and internal storage are swapped around...this is on the phone and also in windows. Not sure if i need to fix this or not...i cant get appextractor to run it cant find the sdcard.

Why are you running appex...? I doubt it works on xt907.
The swap is the point & works great. If want internal sd to hog internal memory just delete the the file 11extsd2internal from init.d. reboot.
Read the sd swap link in the op.
Ah ok i gettit now...i really like this rom, specially the cool swype with arrows keyboard.
Was trying to use appex to get old contacts n sms data etc...but i guess its waste of time trying to make it work?
Also can't get terminal emulator to work. I moved it to user and then upgraded to later version but it stops working whenever i try use it. tried moving it back to system but same prob.
Feel like this rom will either upgrade me from n00b or break my phone...or maybe even break me

Been using touchpal for couple of weeks now it works fine for dialling etc. but i can't figure out how to load previous contacts. I tried using appex to restore contacts from previous backup. it says its working but i don't find any contacts in touchpal after reboot. I have also got all my contacts as vcf files on my sdcard but can't find a way to import them. Also in my text message app when i receive a text and try to save the number it says it can't find the app to save the contact with. After much messing around with permissions etc i finally made touchpal save a contact if i type it in. Also touchpal doesn't seem to be creating any call logs so i can't find any of the previous numbers i dialled. It's all a bit frustrating really.
So i am thinking there must be some way to tell the phone that the contacts app is not the default one it is now touchpal, and perhaps then this will allow me to access android contacts and then import the vcf files? I suspect this is something to do with permissions and/ or android wanting to find a different app to manage contacts. I have been googling a bit but can't find anything useful about how android contacts work and how i can make this all work without having the native contacts app.

No, a) i don't know how to do that and b) i don't have any google stuff set up - i am trying to use the phone without using google's (skynet) services.
I remember importing vcf contacts before using the stock contacts app so i guess what i am really asking is if i can make touchpal do that...and it would be great if i could save numbers from text messages... many thanks as always
Can i upgrade from the original telstra to the v3 version here? And can it be done without losing apps/ messages/ data etc?
Thanks as always...

Anything I need to be aware of to avoid the dreaded bricking.
