Exactly, I just rooted, upgraded, and rooted again not more than 20 minutes ago.
I installed this update on Wednesday and rooted fine yesterday with no problems.

Not True
Yes, mostly everyone that have followed the directions and know what they are doing have had success. I was one that upgraded first and didnt have any issues and havent had any since.
The update keeps failing for me after root. Any ideas?

Except I didn't have a double negative. What he posted makes no sense, and I posted exactly what I meant to say.
Simple: dotson assumed there was a comma where there wasn't.
Original: "No current root methods work on the Droid 3."
What dotson (mis-)read: "No, current root methods work on the Droid 3."
Thus he assumed he meant to say "No, current root methods don't work on the Droid 3."

From y limited understanding Gingerbreak works with 2.3.3, however the D3 comes stock with 2.3.4, which has all known exploits closed. So we just have to wait until more are found, with code as complex as an OS there's always some to be had.

Let's hope.
It should be even easier once the first OTA comes out, seeing how the moto devs access the OS is very likely to reveal an exploit, or at least point us in the right direction.

Hey @qbking77, Could you put in your OP which method you used please? Moto or CF's Autoroot?
Thanks!
:edit: I need to add why I'm asking - We have had a report of Motochopper not letting an app that needs root function properly where CF's Autoroot does. Being that it's early in the game, people may want to know this. I understand that CF has a disclaimer using the autoroot method but it's still a viable solution with the numbers coming in on successful. I do not believe we have had a failed attempt on Sprint devices. (Please correct me if I'm wrong)

I used motochopper. If anyone has issues with an app, just install busybox from the play store.

Hey Tim,
Any know how on how to use for a Mac?
Thanks
Thanks for the video. I did get it to work though I ran into an error. It said that more than 1 deviced or emulator detected. I exited Bluestacks, pdanet and the Galaxy streaming server. After closing those programs, I ran the batch file and it was successful. I'm sure that bluestacks caused the issue. Just a warning for those using this program.
Any word on whether this works with the newest firmware update?

I'm not sure if anyone has actually received the update yet.
Just got it, took a quick stop at the house. Rooted. Worked like a charm. Make sure you have nothing like bluestacks running. Like a previous user has stated. I was having issue till I made sure everything else was off. Even pdanet
So I'm seeing these articles about the sprint moto x getting an update but I haven't received or seen much talk about the sprint version on here getting that update. Is it still only hitting certain areas? Could someone maybe get us sprint users that are unlocked get a stock system.img and boot.img with that update applied?

Please god. I've been trying to find ANYTHING that can put this update on my phone. Nobody has posted the update.zip or any of the images or anything. I've seen people say they've received the update, but that's about it. I really want this update.
Minus the release notes I have seen very little about this update from anyone that has it. I would like to hear what people are seeing.

Ok so I got the update a few days ago and it failed to install because I'm unlocked and rooted and all that jazz. So I grabbed the zip file out of /cache and uploaded it here:
https://db.tt/oqP3l1Qs
For what it's worth, the last few times I've checked for an update, my phone says I'm up to date even though I'm still on 4.2.
Edit: Dropbox instead of Drive
Edit: Just realized this zip is the same software version I already have. Then why did my phone tell me it was an update to be downloaded?

I know it isn't much help but I was in the Sprint Store yesterday and their demo phone had the update sitting ready to install. They wouldn't let me get ahold of it and take it off though. Could have very easily done so in a few minutes.

Im booting up right now right after flashing to read my build prop and build number...Will also check camera performance.
Someone please go to their about phone section and tell me their kernel version, everything in their please, post an SS!
Someone posted that the initial roll-out was a test run and only sent to a fraction of Sprint users. The main roll-out is supposed to happen on October 2.

Interesting. The name of the zip says 139.12.2 but it brought you up to 139.14.4. I guess it was mislabeled.

Can anyone tell me if it's possible to use this update on Verizon branded Moto X's? I don't know if this update includes radios or basebands. Also, where the hell is the tmobile apk for the camera??
Update applied. Worked just fine just like the other guy said. Anyone who wants the update can do this through stock recovery.

So can I get the step by step instructions to apply this manually. I have downloaded the file from the drop box link here in this thread. I do not have rot nor is my boot loader unlocked. I can get phone into recovery via fast boot and selecting recovery but all I get is an android laying down with an error stating no command. I have moved the file to the root of my SD card but am unable to put it into cache obviously without root access.

I'm contemplating getting a Moto X on Verizon. I want root. Don't care about ROMs or anything just want to be able to do a couple things mainly. I've read some threads and what not and am a little confused about how easy it is to root the thing with the latest update. Is it possible or did they patch it up? I'd be getting the phone from Verizon so I'm guessing it'd be up to date. Thanks in advance.

Even without root this phone is amazing! This is coming from someone who used to flash a new rom daily. Now like you, I still prefer root for certain apps but this phone is so good it would be just as enjoyable without root. You might get lucky and get one that's been in the cabinet for a couple of weeks then you could root it. If not I'd still get it. I would bet we will have a way to root the newer software before long anyway.

There is an alternative root method, it is not going to get released before 4.4 though... If it get released now, then the exploit will undoubtedly get patch with 4.4... So the creator is waiting for the big update to release, then release his root method.

A while back he said he had another way to root but would hold it back until 4.3+ update. That's cool he's pushing it out sooner... Hopefully the exploit doesn't get patched in the next update though, I understand the reason for waiting on these things, it's like playing chess.

4.4 is a completely different ballgame when it comes to root and security exploits. His method was patched, that's why he's releasing it. Won't matter when 4.4 comes...

I would be very careful of the Dev edition. With carriers you get good support and exchanges. With Moto, the support is horrible and no chance for an exchange.

there is an exploit for the comera ota update now. It is not that complicated if you toy with your phone and know how to use adb and run some simple commands. There is a video for it and another thread that gives you instructions for windows for those that really don't know how to run things in cmd prompt.

Most people who have updated should have already read by now that it's possible to retain root thru the update. I've seen at least 4~5 guides within threads on how to do this already.
