My PC and Nexus connected to same network over wifi. I tried to do subject over estrongs file explorer but there is no result I can't play any video file unless I coppied it to the phone. I what to watch video streamming from the PC, without needs copping. I guess there must be special app for this task. But wich one is it?

I haven't been able to stream from my pc, but I can use ES to copy a file to my sdcard and play it via rock player. I'm pretty sure there are served based apps like OrbLive that allows you to stream from your desktop, but they require you to install a service on your pc. My pc is cluttered enough as it is, so personally I'm against that route.
Curious as to any other options you uncover.

i believe gmote allows some video streaming though i'm unsure of which file types.
Gmote won't do divx avi. Otherwise it's a perfectly workable solution for mp4 and any format that android natively supports.

Perfectly will be to watch avi using estrongs file explorer over samba via yxplayer. But any of files can't be open direct from the PC in estrongs file explorer at least. They must be first coppied to the phone. How can I open files direct from PC like if I do that from PC to PC?

Maybe there is a player which can play video over UPnP for example?

If you're rooted - look in Development forum, there's a post about how to mount the Samba server path as one of the system directories using binaries. This would allow you to do exactly what you want to do.
You might also try using RockPlayer Beta as the media player.

Hi I wonder if its possible to stream music from my nas via smb and vpn? Also have a ftp server on it. I know some software that can do this on pc so it should not be impossible
Sent from my GT-I9000 using Tapatalk
I think you cannot STREAM using FTP, FTP is for File Transfer. There is already an App for that. download ES File Explorer
or give this a try: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=756158
Most NAS devices use Linux, and so try to find out more details about it.
In fact, the QNAP ones even come with Twonkyserver, and if yours runs linux, it might be possible to run it on yours too.
I'm looking for an application that can read music and use playlists located on my computer in Windows Media Reader, using Wi-Fi. My files are all MP3 and WMA.
Can anybody help me ?
Skytunes works via wifi, or 3G
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
Thanks for the info. Skytunes looks interesting and uses Adobe Air and seems to be able to stream music using WiFi. Unfortunately it does not handle WMA files and a good chunk of my 60+GB of music is WMA...
Here's something interesting...
I just navigated from my phone to a folder on my PC (using EStrongs Explorer), and clicked a WMA file, to see if I could stream it. The file played after about 2 seconds, but the screen was blank so I've no idea what was playing it...?
I'll keep digging...

For rooted phones with custom ROMs (or just custom kernels with CIFS support), and for users that know a bit UNIX and aren't afraid to use Terminal:
Search Development forum for "CIFS mount".
I've been playing with Twonky to serve media from my PC to my Revue. There's also a Twonky app for Android, and so I can now stream from PC to my Nexus...
Works great, kinda expense for PC client (I'm still using demo), and no idea of supported formats, but maybe worth a look?

Hey guys,
I wanted to know if there is a app that will let me stream movie files from my network nas to my gtablet. I have alot of standard avi's and mkv files and wanted to watch over my network at home. Looking for something like xbmc. When I try with es explorer it starts to dl the file. Any info would be great. Thanks
I've been experimenting with Pogoplug beta and Opera Unite, with relative success, both products need a lot of work.

There are several on the Market that are based on you having Videolan (VLC) on your server, for example VLC direct, VLC S&C Free and VLC RS9 fee based). There is also QLoud Video which has it's own host component installe on your server. I haven't been completely successful with any of them yet but I am still experimenting.
Hey Pearlyking,
Im looking for something that i dont need installed on my server. Im not really using a computer to host the files. Im using a synology NAS to host the files. I have a bunch of media players around the house that just stream the media from the nas and trying to get the same effect on the gtablet. The Nas has its on firmware and im just using it as a samba. Hope that makes sense.

I use yxplayer. My server is HFS. Very simple. Instead of clicking the link, I copy the link to "add a stream." Works with avis, jittery with HD.

You'll have to DL CifsManager or some such app - and it needs root, so you'll need to be able to grant it root.
Then you run the app and mount the drive.
I have done this for my music; it loses a little bit (the music player won't grab the info on the files, etc) but it plays...

You will also need root, but also custom kernel from either pershoot or clemsyn which has all those available module in the kernel.
I don't know about MKV format but if you just want to stream video files from your computer then Gmote works very well, it says it won't work with AVI files but I've never had a problem with them.
Just have to download it to your computer and have it running when you use it on the tablet.
Thanks for the info guys. Will try it out when i get a chance.
I use upnplay to stream video files off my wifi router with a harddrive plugged into it. I accesses the files very easily and then once selected file opens with rockplayer and plays just fine. Best solution I have found.

I would say if you are new to a cifs module to go with clemsyn kernel cause cifs and all needed modules are pre built in. Pershoots kernel you will have to follow instructions on website on intalling cifs and utf8 modules and then chmod them. I personally like pershoots cause seems much snappier to me. But you decide.

I can't get playon to stream to my gtab? What player are you using on your gtab? I can browse all the channels on the playon server, but my tablet won't play them. I am on Caulkulin w/Clemsysn kernal.

This is the correct answer. I highly recommend it.
I use zumocast. Works great for me. For local files, Rockplayer lite plays everything I throw at it. There is also a pre-Alpha release of VLC for Android out that I use sometimes.
