Angry Birds Now On Eris

Just received an email from Rovio basically stating that Angry Birds is now supported on the Eris! It now shows up in the Market for us. Downloading now.

This makes me happy! Just downloaded it. Doesn't run very smooth at all. But none the less it makes me happy to see the birds and pigs on my screen!

So, I assume they resized it for the screen? That's the only issue I had with "forcing" it on my Eris. It was still playable enough for me to master the beta.

If resizing it would fix the background not showing up then yes. Unfortunately now that it displays it's extremely laggy I would almost say the forced version was more fun to play.

Agree. Played better without all the textures working. And besides, the invisible background added to the challenge!

Maybe if enough of us complain they will fix the "laggyness".

Wonder if we could just strip down the apk and make sort of like an 8 bit version. Or at least one with less demanding graphics. They also added the full video ads into this one and more live ads to the game. I feel like the live rendering of those bog down the game a lot. I was more happy with the lder version i almost beat every little sans the background it never really bothered me because i could always just figure the lvl out through trial and error. Now it's not even playable.

Turning on Airplane Mode improves performance a little bit, at lease the ads are gone.

Or install adfree if your rooted. Still some lag but not nearly as bad.

Amazing, makes a huge difference, still a little laggy but now at least playable.
I've noticed it always shows as installed on the SD card despite the fact I don't use apps2sd or anything like that. If thats true I wonder if an SD card better than the stock class 2 would make things any better?

It may. I use the custom apps2sd that was created for 2.1 and older ROMs and bought a class 6 16GB card (bought that before i found out there is very little difference in performance between the Class 4 and the Class 6). Can't tell the difference in speed between the apps running from the built in RAM and the apps running from the SD card.
Don't see why you shouldn't see similar results with Google implementation of apps2sd. But try installing it to your phone directly first and compare before you plunk any cash down.

Question: I can't install angry birds! It downloads from the market and then says installing for about 2 seconds then says "installation unsuccessful." Any ideas? I'm running kaosfroyo

I thought I was the only one with the not installing problem.... I hope someone can answer that cause I've used the custom installed but the some of the structures in the puzzels were just white. Making it hard to play... I saw that it was in the market, but it wont install. This is mu first post so please be nice. SPELLING AND OTHER ERRORS. lol

First thing is to check to make sure you have enough available space on your phone's internal storage: Settings --> SD card & phone storage. Angry Birds takes a good 14-15MB of space, fairly large for an android app.
If you have apps2sd running i'd recommend using Root Explorer to check how much storage you have left in your 'data/app' folder.

i was able to install it by doing this.
put the apk somewhere on your phones internal storage
unmount sd card
use file manager, astro root yand, to locate file and install that way
mount sd card
i have heard some people having issues doing it this way, but since i dont use app2sd i havent had any issues

I just flashed kaos froyo and now no mater where or how i install the .apk angry birds refuses to install.

Worth rooting?

I just upgraded to the droid 4 a couple of days ago. I am not new to rooting by any means, so ive been considering rooting this beast. My concern is not having a safe point to restore to. Is it worth it at this point to take the minimal risk? Has anyones use of the droid 4 become drastically improved after rooting? I appreciate any advice anyone has. Thank you

Go for it!
I have notice no performance increase or decrease. My phone behaves they same before and after I rooted. The rooting method is super easy also. I was impressed. If you follow directions exactly then the risk of bricking is VERY minimal. If your like me and you like having full control over your phone, then I would definitely root. The risk of screwing up your phone is greater after you root your device because then you start installing apps using super user permissions. As long as you stick with well know root apps like Root Explorer, Titanium Backup, Wireless Tether (the google project one), Nebtop, etc, you will be OK. Avoid apps with a very low amount of user reviews on the Play Store. If you do this then you will be fine.

My opinion it is definitely worth it as I've always been rooted and had a hard time even trying to make it through one day on stock lol. If you are familiar with rooting on Moto devices and familiar with Safestrap, you shouldn't worry too much.. But that being said, I there are still no fastboot files and there will still always be some risk.
I'm currently set up stock on my non-safe system(leaving it as is if I need to go back or for an ota) with gummy on my safe side. I've had good luck with data so far on gummy and with aokp and it's hard to go back once you've run ics long enough lol.
Just my opinion. If you haven't used Safestrap before just make sure to read up first to eliminate chance of bringing.

Keep in mind, you don't have to install a new ROM or safestrap if you just want to root. The risk to rooting is pretty minimal, and it allows you a lot more control over the phone.
The reason I rooted was because:
1) Titanium Backup requires root
2) Widgetlocker works better with root (disable ugly stock lockscreen)
3) SetCPU requires root to work
I have SetCPU setup not to overclock, but to underclock when screen is off/charging. Worth it for root for me. Plus, I wanted to root now, just in case an OTA comes down that makes it difficult to root later on (like the OG Droid).

You all sound pretty convincing. Podspi, or anyone for that matter, how much longer does your battery last while underclocking it just when charging and the screens off? I think i will be rooting this phone in a matter of hours

Probably depends on your use... It's hard to say, since I rooted it and underclocked it about an hour after I got it, but Battery Monitor Widget claims I could get 2 days out of idle (screen off).
SetCPU has a profile mode that lets you set the speed under a bunch of different conditions. I limit mine to 600mhz when less than 50% battery is remaining, for example. So far, with 4G on, I haven't even come close to running out in a day. So I'm pretty happy with the results, though I am not a heavy user.
Use the Droid 4 Utility, it makes rooting more or less foolproof. It is just a batch file, if you are interested in exactly what it is doing.

I just rooted my phone. That was incredibly simple, and I can do it to the other 4 droid 4s in my family in a matter of minutes. Which wireless tether app is the Google Project one? I've used barnacle in the past and one other I no longer see available on the market. Also anyone have a lockscreen that can pause and skip music? One of the simplest things I miss
For the purposes of SetCPU, at what temperatures should I be concerned about the battery and CPU? I read somewhere these batterys can take up to 158 degrees before any difference, but I set it at 140 degrees. What is safe for the phone?

I have gotten my phone very hot to the touch over 4G on a skype Video call so I imagine it could go further without problems.

Droid 4 util is amazing. I'm a PC tech, and real familiar with windows and such, but not great with hardware, and my only previous android device was a god awful archos tablet.
D4U unlocked my phone in pretty much a single click, and bam, free tether, etc.

Browser always refreshing?

I've been hearing that the One has issues similar to its predecessor, as far as browser multitasking. Has anyone had issues with the browser constantly refreshing when you leave, go to another app, and come back to it?

No such problem with my HTC One. Multitasked between apps and browser, different tabs stayed put(no auto-refreshing).

What kind of websites does it happen with and how often? It worries me how there's no definitive reason why some people have this problem. It seems to be random.

It does it a LOT on a dating site that I use, OKCupid (when accessing the desktop version of the site). I think it may possibly be related to the number of tabs one has open, as well. But certainly it's very annoying. I sometimes do a bit of browsing on London Underground trains. (You get about 20 seconds of wifi when the train is in a station!) What I'd like to be able to do is load up multiple pages in different tabs (each one opened as a new background tab) while the connection is up and then read them in the tunnels between stations; but it insists on refreshing each tab as you go back to it, and, as there's no connection in the tunnel, you can't actually read the page, even though it's fully downloaded and should be cached.

It does it pretty frequently. More with stock browser than with chrome though.

But that doesn't happen on my Chrome on my Note II... ever! Even if I press a link by mistake I can press back and it will be stored in cache, this is probably an HTC problem then, anyone else having this issue?

Nope. Not a problem for me. Always going back and forth on my browser. No issue there

This was NEVER an issue specific to HTC or its software. The sooner people stop spreading the FUD the better.
The only reason Android will force the browser to clear its cache of a page is because it needs to. That is, it's running low on RAM due to other services/apps and needs more. Your browser is not considered a high-level process in the priority list (it's not a service, unlike many other apps), so it'll get hit more often than other apps.
So, the reason this crops up for some people more than others is simply due to what they have running in the background (services, such as Facebook, Trillian, GMail, etc etc). The more crap you run at the same time, the more likely it's going to run out of RAM. This is how it works for ANY Android phone going all the way back to the 2.0 days. It's ALSO how it works on iOS, BlackBerry 10, and webOS (except those platforms don't use a priority system). Also keep in mind that websites these days actually take up a significant amount of RAM, especially ones with heavy amounts of Javascript and retina-level graphics.
The HTC One has 2GB of RAM, which means you have quite a bit of RAM to work with before this happens, but how often it happens is always going to be determined by how you use it.

Thats false, it was an issue on the HTC One X, and thats why I went for the GS3 instead of the One X (that and battery life), and it was done on purpose by HTC, not sure if they "fixed" it or not since then.

No, it wasn't, no more than any other device with 1GB of RAM. I'm sure that's what you thought based on all the fud being spread at the time, but it wasn't true, as anyone who knows more about the internals would acknowledge.

A preference that had no influence apparently, since all it takes is a person with a task manager to confirm what I said was true.

This happens on my Nexus 4. Nothing new to see.

This is also BS. The evo lte I had always dumped the browser and this phone does it as well, even just going back and forth from the browser to the music app. The galaxy i switched to did not exhibit the same behavior. In fact, that thing would often keep the browser in memory till the NEXT DAY. This phone with 2gb ram (and 700 plus free) will dump my browser pages for nothing but time it seems

It's really not. I had chrome stay in RAM for 3 full hours tonight even when playing games. Don't ever use the stock browser, they're always terrible on all platforms.

See, that's what's retarded to me. I too have also ran a heavy game and came back to the browser and my pages were still there. But let me play some music and come back a few minutes later and it's highly likely that it's been terminated
I don't use chrome because the stuttery scrolling. The stock browser is the smoothest I've ever used on android so I'm a bit smitten

Chrome doesn't have any scrolling lag for me on the One.

official ICS so crappy and slow

am using the official ICS and OMG its so stupid!
-it takes up to 8 seconds to open an app
-it drains my battery(8 hours maximum)
-it lags so much and some apps just end up crashing every now and then
-cant tether
-one cant manually toggle between 2G/3G/4G!
-is the processor of this phone really a duo core??????
Is there a better ROM??? or should i just sell off the phone??

Did you do a complete wipe/factory restore when you moved to ICS? I started out that way, and the ROM has always felt fine, and I believe there are reports from other users that had their gripes resolved when they restored from scratch.

I did a wipe but still the rom is so lagging!

i had some previous ICS experiences but you should try a few tricks. first, hold down the HOME KEY for about 3 seconds. an APP manager opens. you may have lots of apps that didnt close. hit STOP ALL.
Also notice that you can quickly pop between apps this way. you can kill an app by swiping its image sideways.
Second, in your drop down bar, organize your icons to have the WIFI and DATA buttons quickly available. The DATA is a really battery drainer. if your not using it, turn it off. if your not using wifi, turn it off. your battery can last 2+ days with both turned off.
With Gingerbread, i had issues with the wifi not connecting after the phone was on for a day or so. all that seems to be fixed with ICS. I used to have to reboot the phone 2-3 times a day to fix this. I rarely ever reboot it now.
If you decide to sell off the phone, i know at&t will give you $100 for it as a trade in. I think the used phones are going for about $90 on ebay now

I recently got this phone and have been expirimenting with the official stock rom while rooted. It is offensively slow and I believe lg recruited satan to invent the rom and make me kill myself. Either way, a few things that actually worked for me are the following:
Startup manager from the android market, disable all lg/ startup applications under system. This singlehandedly decreased my boot time by about a minute and makes everything much smoother.
rescan media root from the market, use it to disable media scanning. For some reason, the media scanner on stock ics sucks for me, and makes the entire phone unusable. Disabling it with this app also increased my boot time and made the phone run better.
V6 supercharger with kick ass kernelizer and patched services.jar and unledded minfrees. Google v6 supercharger, its the first result.
I still have problems like op describes, sometimes the phone will freeze for four to eight seconds while doing something and takes time to catch up to itself. Not sure why, or how to fix it.

Are you sure about that, I actually flashed ICS on my Thrill and It rocks!!!!!!

If you are sure it is not a bad flash, try Supercharger and Ultimatic .jar tools mod over in General Android Dev and Hacks like teebuddy said. Kills lag like no other mod. Also uninstall unneeded apps to free up memory. This phone is 3+ yrs old now.
Or use a better optimized custom ROM

This phone is a piece of garbage.
My first visit to the forum in months.
I signed up to install ICS official hoping for improvements. It brought me some features. Did it make the phone better? Nope, probably worse.
Phone is laggy and my internal storage isn't even full.
Sometimes opening an app takes 4-6 seconds, other times an app freezes and the buttons on the bottom of the phone do not respond.
Sometimes when in an app it goes black and then takes forever to respond again.
I upgrade to ICS and lose tethering which was a nice feature. I would rather lose 3D which is the biggest gimmick ever.
This phone is beyond pathetic! I have an iPhone 4 which is a single core and runs smooth as BUTTER. I prefer Android OS but LG Optimus 3D sucks.
There is no hope for this pathetic phone now. Once my contract expires next year I will try to sell it.

Not sure what you are talking about.
I got the phone in 2011 when it came out. There weren't many options. The contract is 3 years, so it expires summer 2014.
Not sure where you live but contracts were 3 years and only changed to 2 years this July. Anyone before July still has to finish their contract or they can cancel.
The phone sucks period. It is worse than my friends Samsung Galaxy S Captivate and my Uncle's iPhone 4.

I'm currently on stock AT&T ICS after custom flashing it god knows how many times. Super-bricked to restored.
I find the current ICS implementation crazy for how little room it leaves on the device.
I've been able to get the device running a TAD smoother by disabling (Yay ICS disable feature) most of the AT&T junk. The reason the device lags so much, especially compared to other devices, is squarely on the lack of RAM. It has 256MB compared to other devices (like the Evo 3D) which have 512MB.
I know the CPU itself isn't crappy, because games like Asphalt 6 look AND RUN fantastic. If it was garbage, the game would run like garbage.
So anything you can do on the device to prevent apps running in the background will help. Otherwise it's spending a LOT of time closing apps because so much of the RAM is used.

Um this phone has 512mb ram... Also the processor sucks. It's worse than an underclocked iPhone 4 processor.
I froze all the AT&T apps with titanium backup.

Who else doesn't care about root?

Am I the only one who doesn't seem to care about root? The reason I've rooted and flashed previous devices was for better gaming & speed optimization, battery life and the experience of change & customization; of course.
However, as odd as it seems to say I have went weeks now not even thinking of root or custom roms on this device.
TouchWiz is faster than ever, gaming is faster than ever (the CPU and GPU speak for themselves..), and everything's polished. The battery is superb! I dont even charge my S5 somedays with moderate gaming.. All I did was a few standard TW tweaks.. disabled animations in DM and threw on Nova launcher.
Next time around I will go with an unlocked phone (probably the next flagship Google phone), but for now I really enjoy the stock and untampered version of this phone.
Anyone else on the same page?

Titanium backup is useless for me, all I ever backup is photos and that's easily done with my Google account. I have no reasons to greenify on this phone, no reason to debloat (doesn't slow my phone down), all I miss is xposed and rom toolbox, but even those aren't much to me anymore. I have my nexus 7 (2013) for my AOSP needs I actually enjoy TW on my phone.. weird, I know.

I care very much about it since Samsung decided to disable so many things. The ability for 3rd party file managers to fly from internal to external memory (or from a cloud to external, which is what I really want), lock screen widgets, the lack of available memory--they list goes on the more I use this phone.

Actually those are Google limitations brought on by KitKat, not Samsung limitations. KitKat has blocked the 3rd party write ability to SD cards.

Couldnt disagree more about AOSP. Dont want it, dont need it otherwise i would have gone with a nexus.

TouchWiz is faster than ever, gaming is faster than ever (the CPU and GPU speak for themselves..), and everything's polished. The battery is superb! I dont even charge my S5 somedays with moderate gaming.. All I did was a few standard TW tweaks.. disabled animations in DM and threw on Nova launcher.
Next time around I will go with an unlocked phone (probably the next flagship Google phone), but for now I really enjoy the stock and untampered version of this phone.
Anyone else on the same page?

Partially. My S3 is my work phone, and if Samsung ever gets around to releasing the 32GB version instead of futzing around with colors, I'll likely pull the trigger on the S5. My employer will be implementing AirWatch soon and cutting off sync to rooted phones, so the lack of root will mean less to me.
I will hate to give up, though Titanium Backup - both for its ability to backup and freeze apps; Greenify - to try tame misbehaved apps; my S3 gets the world's worst battery life, Bettery Batter Stats - to try to diagnose said awful battery life, and Directory Bind - to work around some of the limits of the 16GB space on my G3.
I'd like to be able to delete instead of freeze worthless Samsung apps when Samsung shuts their services down and AT&T apps that I will never, ever, ever use.
Give me a way to backup my phone, safely uninstall non-core functionality, and make my battery suck less, and I can live without root.

I also don't care about root, for myself, on my primary device.
I'd rather the added stability and security from knowing the various apps, and myself, are locked out of ranges of potentially harmful behavior. For me, for my phone, it's no. 1 a tool that I needs to be reliable.
Way far and gone in 3rd place would be something that needs root.
Like other's stated, my data/content is backed up separately, and google play has my back on the apps, so I don't need any other backup solution.

Root would be nice, but the S5 seems to have hit the mark as far as I'm concerned. It is not perfect, but I am very satisfied. Even if a root method is found, I'm not so sure I would be doing it.
As far as my need to flash something...well...that's what my N7 is for. lol

As much as I want root, I am just as happy without it. I've had zero problems with battery life or lag.

Obviously I care a lot, today I sold the S5 and just got an M8, having an Andorid without root is the same as having an iPhone or WindowsPhone. I like to be able to do whatever I want with my device.

Android w/o root is still a ton better than iOS.

For me, the only thing I want root for on this device is titanium backup, and the ability to enable car mode which AT&T very stupidly disabled.

I have a hard time saying this but I have to agree with the op. My excuse, powering savings mode. I can't live without it now, having gray scale and under clocking right at the touch of a button is sweet. I get three to four days per charge with heavy use. Plus I love the camera app, it's almost worth it for just that alone.

After using Touchwiz for a month or so.. i would definitely like to flash AOSP or something new. it's like the phone is starting to slow down or get buggy here and there.
Also Xposed has some great tweaks
Root isn't a deal breaker for me but it's always great to have options

I would miss xposed, but I could have managed with no root if Google wouldn't have F'd up the the external SD access. I really liked the phone, but couldn't justify dropping that kind of money on a locked down phone. I still pop in here every couple of days in hopes that an exploit has been found, but no such luck. I'm seriously considering picking up an international model pretty soon.

Glad to see an equal side oppositional in this thread, nice to see some agree with me. If I remember.. I did see something somewhere about a possible future update allowing more SD card writing.

i only want root so i can use the download booster feature that samsung advertises. but hopefully we will get that in a ota

I'm not saying you're wrong, but the ES dev said the inability to copy to external memory is Samsung's doing. Also, I had stock, barebones kitkat on my S3 and it could do said function.

HTC M8 stock KitKat most 3rd party apps cannot write to sd card...Dropbox still can't. It required root and a fix to make some work. If you google KitKat and sd card trouble you will see it is KitKat, not Samsung.
