Solved!
Hi,
I have SLCD Nexus one(2.2) and I want to install custom rom.
But it shows black screen because it's not OLED.
Solved!! - Most custom roms having new kernels work, if it doesn't have new kernel installing new kernel works!
I've got the same problem. I even tried brute force, because I got everything working but got stuck on a black screen recovery, which I tried to get working for hours. I thought it might be the new rom or the new hboot, so I flashed a new image via fastboot. Now I'm stuck at a black screen os (thank god fastboot still works) - but I'd need a stock slcd rom to get back to where I started.
Could someone be so kind and upload an slcd rom? Or even better some slcd custom recovery+slcd+new hboot compliant custom rom?
I think, that a lot of people will get in this trap, because there are no warnings, that even the newest cm/ra_recovery won't work on a new nexus one.
Thanks in advance.
Update: Solved on my own. Now I'm just waiting for some slcd recovery + mod. ;-)
This is Amon Ra's Nexus One SLCD recovery dl.dropbox.com/u/4481275/recovery-RA-nexus-v1.8.0.1-aw.img
Well, at least be glad that fixing a dark Nexus One is probably much easier than fixing a dark HTC Desire!
I suggest this sequence if you have an SLCD N1:
1) Root first, then load ROM Manager
2) Install custom recovery but keep your ROM for now. Boot into recovery. If it's dark, wrong recovery - try again.
3) ONLY once you have a working recovery should you even think about trying other ROMs. And don't forget to take a full nandroid backup first. You should be able to restore that backup safely from recovery.

Thanks, but I'm asking for custom rom, not recovery.
Anyway, thank you very much.

Thanks, but I'm asking for custom rom, not fix. (I already fixed it)
Anyway, thank you very much.
i have same problem as wisechild but u said u have fixed it and just waiting for custom rom if so how did u fix it. i no the recovery works in the background, when the screen is dark cause if u do a backup in rom manager and let it run despite dark screen it shows up when u go back to rom manager. the trouble is i have the hboot 0017 instead of 0012 so can't install cm roms. is there a rom that works with that hboot.
found solution, the latest Kang-o-rama rom work with the korean hboot 0.35.0017 . Installed it using rom manager install from sdcard option. despite not being able to see the recovery screen just let it run for like 5 mins then it reboots and u got a custom rom.

Thanks, but I'll wait for custom rom supporting FM(ie NXSense).
Anyway thank you very much.
If you'd like a specific ROM to support SLCD, best to request this directly on the thread for that ROM.
I wonder if there is a component which can be swapped in easily to provide SLCD support?

Can you verify with a ROM like CM6 or Evil Sense.
Please, do tell us how you implemented a fix .
Hmm
Can anyone help please?
I previously flashed an old Amon Ra recovery onto my N1 SLCD & suffered the blank screen fate. Since rooted with universal androot and tried to copy over and flash using adb shell (for some reason fastboot flash recovery doesn't seem to work - i still get the blank screen). However, adb shell denies permission to become su even though following root i can become su using terminal emulator on the phone ... Anyone have any ideas?

I think fastboot flash recovery requires an unlocked bootloader.
With adb shell you have to type su and then, on the phone, look for the permissions dialog to come up. After you accept, it will give you a root shell. If it's not asking you for the permissions, I'm not sure what else to do.
I think you could also conceivably run flash_image from the terminal emulator as root and flash the correct recovery that way.

Flash AmonRa's 1.8.0.1 recovery that supports SLCD, and then flash any ROM you like - most of them support SLCD now, and if you see that the one you flashed doesn't - flash another.

cant really troubleshoot now cause i'm at work but how would i be able to enable usb debugging if i cant see the screen?
You couldn't get stuck in ROM if you flashed a recovery that doesn't support SLCD, because you wouldn't be able to install ROM without it - and you couldn't get stuck without ROM if you only flashed a recovery that doesn't support SLCD. So one of them should be working for you, and enable to make the other work.
That is unless you used ROM manager, which flashed the recovery for you and did all the stuff - and it didn't show anything, because Clockwork recovery doesn't support SLCD (so you would get your ROM installed for you and not see it, and then you'd get stuck with a ROM that doesn't support SLCD).
If that's the case, run the recovery and try to connect ADB (recovery runs ADB interface).

Indeed, correct.
Use recovery flashing guide from Wiki. If you're rooted without unlocking - follow the "flash_image method" guide. If you find out that you need to install busybox - download the APK and install using ADB, instead of downloading from the Market.
I wrote this how-to, I think it might help you.

It's essentially the same guide as in Wiki, but executed through ADB - which is good. I'll add your guide to the Wiki for reference, with a link. I saw, it doesn't require Busybox (uses "cat >" instead of "cp").

if you have to ask then its probably a bit advanced for you... no offense just sayin..
sometimes the button combos dont work..or you arent doing them properly...you have to be ROOTED to use ROM manager.
here use this ALL-IN-ONE tool: pretty simple to use http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=944418

well the instructions on the serendipity site weren't all too clear to be honest...
I did steps 1-3 from the site i linked above successfully.. what would I do with the AIO tool next in order to get the 6.4 serendipity rom installed? I don't want to mess my phone up by changing from one method of rooting/flashing to another (aio). thanks.
the button combos worked for me btw before i used odin to flash jf6
Odin one click sometimes breaks the combos.
Use the AIO toolbox. It's got instructions included. Doesn't matter if you switch from the method you were using before the toolbox. Plus you're on stock eclair so it's like new right now anyway.

Please ask all questions in relation to issues you are having following the FAQ instructions to make it easier to answer your questions and easier for us to track the solutions that way the FAQ post is as up to date and accurate as possible.
As the GT10.1 landscape changes this thread will get updated. I will try and keep everything as simple and to the point as possible. Contributors will be much appreciated.
THE BASICS
BOOTLOADER MODE
Turn device off. Then hold down power + volume down button (the button closer to power button) until you see two icons appear then let go. Left icon (box) is recovery and right icon (Android robot) is Download. Use Vol. down to navigate then vol. up to select.
DOWNLOADING MODE
Just tap volume up when you have highlighted the android robot icon. You should see downloading appear under the icon.
RECOVERY MODE
Vol. up/down to navigate up or down and power button to select.
This is what you use to install ROMs/KERNELs and even themes for your specific roms when they become available. Just highlight the box icon and hit Vol. up. What we are doing now is replacing the stock recovery on your device with Clockwork Mod Recovery which allows you install unsigned ROMs/Kernels/Updates. When in recovery mode you can also back up whatever current ROM you have on your device so if you install a new ROM and something goes wrong you could always use recovery to restore. Whenever you install a new ROM it's advised to always wipe the device using cwmR to ensure a more stable install. Install new ROMS will also mean you will be losing all the apps on your device. It will look like you have a brand new device after the install unless its an update.zip for whatever rom you are currently on and the developer of that rom supports it.
Don't worry about losing your apps as you can always re-download them once you sync your device with your google account. However, the state of those apps and your settings will be lost, so I strongly suggest that you use an app like titanium back up and always make a back up of your apps before flashing any new ROMs. Check in the Recommended Apps section for a direct link to Titanium backup.
Here is the clockwork mod menu
- Reboot system now (self explanatory )
- Apply update from SDcard. (when you connect your device to your computer it will show up as tablet. The SDcard that cwm refers to is simply your device storage. Always make sure to copy install.zips to the root directory of your tablet storage.) You use this when applying an update for a specific ROM if that is what the ROM developer says.
- Wipe Data/ Factory Reset You should always do this before you install a new ROM or if you are having minor issues with your device.
- Wipe cache partition Think of this as the lite version of whats above . If you do above though it doesn't hurt to do this too.
- Install zip from SDcard Use this to install new ROMs.
- Back up and Restore
- Mounts and Storage use this to connect your device to your computer when in recovery mode. It is also possible to transfer files to your device while in this mode.
- Advanced What you are interested in here is something called dalvik cache, you want to wipe this too before installing any new ROM
- Power off

NVFLASH
Nvflash is a low level formatting and imaging tool. If you don't have a working recovery, or have broken the actual boot-loader on your tablet, this is the tool you will need to turn to. For those with unlocked bootloaders (and no fastboot capability), its the best way to root your device. Nvflash is pretty much NVida's version of say an ODIN program but done through cmd prompt. It can save a tablet if one is soft/semi-bricked or maybe full-bricked. To use nvFlash you must first put your tablet in APX mode (think of it as a way to allow you use commands on your computer to control your tablet).

UNROOTING & RESTORING STOCK RECOVERY
1. Using CWM Flash the stock rom for your device. This unroots your device and basically makes it like a brand new tablet.
2. Use Odin to flash the stock recovery from the filesfordummies.zip.
3. Done, your device is exactly how it was when you picked it up.
FLASHING ROMS AND KERNELS
This is pretty easy as long as you have CWM on your device.
Simply boot CWM recovery, navigate to either update/instal zip from SDcard (pls adhere to ROM/kernel install instructions) and flash the .zip file of the ROM or kernel.
I will update this section with links to all the existing and stable ROMs and kernels as the become available. I will advice that you hold off on the kernels if you can as every stable kernel will eventually get cooked into a ROM unless of course you want to help test them or be on the bleeding edge .

(Q) Should I follow these instructions for an IO edition tab? Or should I just use the fastboot flash [cwm recover] and flash the zips through that?
(A) This method will work on the IO version.
(Q) kernel 2.6.36.4 is a NO-GO for the 3G version?
(A) Yes, it doesn't work on the 3G version yet.
(Q) If my tab ins locked does that mean i cant flash kernels on it?
(A) You can flash anything as long as you have a recovery that will support it. In our case CWM. Being locked and unlocked really only stops you from flashing stuff "easily" but since we can change the recovery, we can flash anything.
(Q) Does the Odin file wipe tab?
(A) No. All Odin is doing here is flashing a new recovery to your tab. Nothing more.
(P) Can't see tablet as USB storage device on Mac.
(A) Unfortunately Android and Macs don't play nice... you best bet is to use dropbox or a simple bluetooth transfer to transfer files from your mac to your tablet. Then on your Tab use a file manager app to move your files to where you want them to be. For now. Another option is to download everything that requires you using CWM with your tablet so its all already there. So in CWM all you have to do is navigate to your downloads folder. I just created a folder called mods and I have them all there.
(P) Stuck in BootLoop after Flashing ROM via Odin.
(A) You should use nvFlash to falsh CWM if you don't still have it then do a full wipe of your device including reformating all partions in mounts and storage except the boot partition then using Odin install a stock Rom on your device.
(P) I messed things up on my LTE tab and I now somehow dont have a recovery mode anymore!!!!!

The so-called "Mount device as USB Mass storage" thread has nothing to do with mounting the device as Mass Storage. It only tells you how to mount as MTP, which can be done without any of the steps mentioned in the thread. Seriously, it doesn't belong on this list.
Also, you should include instructions for using nvflash to install a custom recovery. I found it much easier and safer to root through this method than through Odin.
[Q] kernel 2.6.36.4
Many thanks for preparing this post.
Just wanted to add a question here: can you confirm that kernel 2.6.36.4 is a NO-GO for the 3G version?
Or is it related with TW versus plain HC?
I'm running the stock TW rom on a rooted 3G tab. Tried to flash the above kernel with OC purposes, had to recover through a CWM backup.
Thanks for clarifying

I'm just going to copy exactly waht I typed in the IRC -- I'm stuck without being able to reboot into recovery with an I/O tab. Also cannot get fastboot to work
- i got some help from here earlier but now i'm stuck again in rooting/flashing a custom rom on the IO edition
<slobdogg> i went through the ODIN process to revert to 3.0.1, then was able to adb reboot recovery and install the root file
<slobdogg> afterwards i installed clockwork mod using RM, and then did the update to a 3.1 OTA file on XDA
<slobdogg> now i'm supposed to reboot into recovery to reinstall root but i cannot
<slobdogg> even in ADB if i reboot recovery it just restarts the device...also, I cannot enter recovery through the Vol Down + Power method, just fastboot and odin
<slobdogg> so im right back where I was (3.1 with no root)

in order to do adb reboot recovery you need a rooted boot.
flash the latest tools pack, and you will get root/adb root shell/busybox,dropbear,ssh,etc.,etc.
you need to get CWM or the stock IO recovery on the device, prior to being able to flash.

What tools pack are you referring to? Can't seem to find something relating to that on the forum.
I feel like an idiot because it just seems like if i restart the process, I'll lose CWM again and be back where I am right now. If I could just get fastboot to work this whole thing would be a lot easier because I could just flash CWM without root.

Started from step 1, and flashed the root file after the 3.1 update and now i'm fine.
Thanks!

This is only really known for certain to work on a retail locked or unlocked version. Not certain about the google i/o version but will ask around for you. But nothing here says that version is supported using this method.
However, i see no reason why it won't work though, assuming you only flash the root exploit.
For instructions specific to your model though, refer to this thread

The so-called "Mount device as USB Mass storage" thread has nothing to do with mounting the device as Mass Storage. It only tells you how to mount as MTP, which can be done without any of the steps mentioned in the thread. Seriously, it doesn't belong on this list.
Also, you should include instructions for using nvflash to install a custom recovery. I found it much easier and safer to root through this method than through Odin.

Thanks, removed the usb thingy, however, it would be nice if you also contributed a link to the nvflash method so i could update the thread. its not my thread you know? it belongs to all of us. How good this thread ends up being all boils down to how helpful we all are.

Please everyone... carefully follow the instructions!!!
On another note, does this mean that this process works on a google i/o device already on android 3.1? Please let me know so i can update

Well, i put it up and took it out again, there is currently a much, much, much easier and direct method to root the device. And one that I am sure you will agree is by far more straight forward.

I'm not sure if it's just my version of the I/O Tab, or all I/O Tabs, but one key thing is that I could NOT boot into recovery on a non-rooted 3.1 Edition.
On 3.1, adb reboot recovery would simply reboot my device. I cannot use the POW + VOL DOWN button combination because I am presented with a USB icon on the left (which takes you to fastboot - which would not work for me), and the ODIN Download Icon on the right.
So, the only changes to the instructions with regards to an IO tab is to remove any reference to "POWER + VOL DOWN" as the method of getting into recovery. IT MUST be done via a command -- either adb reboot recovery or using Rom Manager to boot into CWM.
Exact steps for me (brief):
1. ODIN to revert to 3.0.1
2. reboot the device, turn on USB Debugging
3. connect to computer and use ADB to "adb reboot recovery" then install root zip file once you get into the stock recovery
4. Reboot - install Rom Manager and Clockwork Mod.
5. Reboot into CWM
6. Install the 3.1 Update AND [before rebooting] re-install the root zip file
7. Voila!
Only thing is -- now that I am on 3.1, the only way for me to get into recovery is via Rom Manager because the 'adb reboot recovery' function only reboots the devices, and the button combination trick still does not work.
EDIT: paragraph above is not entirely true -- i can open a terminal on my Tab and type 'reboot recovery' to get back into recovery. So, it's just adb & the button combination that does not work.
I still cannot figure out why I cannot get fastboot to work. My computer even seems to recognize that I have a fastboot device connected, but I cannot send any fastboot commands; even fastboot devices returns nothing.
Looking for Clear directions on how to restore a Streak 7 to Stock 3.2
I got my Streak for christmas and I ran Superuser7.zip on it. I need to fully unroot and restore back to stock for some testing. I can't seem to figure out exactly how to do that. I have the Lg7_WiFi_506_19534_30.pkg but can't seem to figure out how to flash it since ive installed CWM on it for superuser7.
And is that the correct flash? I've seen 506 and 507 talked about, don't know how to tell the difference.
Any help Greatly appreciated!!
Thank You!
Thanks, I'm also interested in seeing a straightforward guide on getting back to stock on the Streak 7.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
Really?
No one? Come on. Im not a complete Noob and not looking for a diaper change guide. But I can't find any direct info on this.
First time working with Streak, usually work with samsungs.. Those are much easier to restore to stock.
I have the LG7-WiFi_506_19534_30.pkg that I found online but am not completely positive this is the package I need.. Goes back to what the heck does the 506 and 507 represent and I don't find any reference to those numbers in my about android tab.
Also... If i wanted use the built in restore function to load a .pkg,, well.. CWM4 killed that. So how do i flash a pkg now?
Anyhelp! if I can get enough direction, I will write a noob guide to this.
Thanks!
OK. Got some of my own homework done.. And figured out what it is I am really looking for.
I know how to restore technically.. but heres the issue. I need to remove CWM5.0.2.7
I need to restore the stock recovery, Then i can just flash a factory.pkg file and its back to stock.
So .. Can anyone refer me to the Stock Recovery .img file I can flash with Fastboot to restore the ability to flash a .pkg file?
Thanks!!
As you're trying i'll throw you a bone:
Dell Streak 7 - xda wiki
Download whatever rec matches the pkg you're going to install, as you've already had a stock 5xx rom installed at one point (the clue is that you had CWM 5.0 installed and working) just install the matching 5xx rec.
You seem to be attempting to install the 506-wifi one.
There's 2 entries on the wiki for 506, one has a modem baseband and the other doesnt, one of them is the wifi version. I'll let you try and figure out this last step.
Then i was reading those as recovery.. FILE NOT FOUND on that site.
got a copy of them? I'm currently running 512 software from Dell according to the build # on streak.. 20031
Appreciate your help.
I was moving files around earlier today on the server, you might have been trying to download them in the short window then when they wernt available.
If there's still any files that arnt working i'll fix them as I find them.
If you're on 512 could you make a nandroid first? 512 is one I dont have and you have it.
obviously i've nuked the Recovery.. but yes I will reset the tablet, and nandroid a copy of it.
Then What is the best next set to set it to stock at that point?
Thanks!
Install the 506 wifi recovery and you can flash the pkg you downloaded if that is the one you wish to flash.
If you're already rooted I believe gingerbreak also has a feature to unroot your rom. If you downgrade to 506 it's techincally a different rom but so far there's very little difference between the various 5xx roms
As promised. NooB Guide for returning back to completely Stock 3.2
Thanks to TheManii for helping me get on the right track and understanding what exactly is needed.
OK. So you've installed CWM 5.0.2.7 and rooted your streak 7 and for what ever reason you want to revert back to Stock, Day 1.
Heres your guide.
DISCLAIMER.. This worked for me. Not my fault if your bork your device for following this guide, however it should work.
Things that are needed.
Fastboot (found here with info on how to get into various modes http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Dell_Streak_7/Flashing_Guide )
The Correct PKG file for your device See http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Dell_Streak_7#Official and get the 506 or 507 PKG and Recovery file(repeated below). Read the page and see if you need 506 or 507 and pick the right one, WiFi or 4g.
And the Same recovery.img file from same package (if you using 506, then 506's)
(you got rooted, so I assume I don't need to get your pampers changed.. You should have a pretty good idea about this so far)
Make a directory and unzip the fastboot+ADB.zip files
copy the recovery.img file downloaded above to same extracted folder so that fastboot and recovery.img are in the same directory.
On the streak. you need to have in a SD Card in the slot, the .pkg file you downloaded and have it named update.pkg in the root level (top) of the sdcard.
Power off your Streak
Put into Fast Boot Mode (see above if you don't know how)
drop to dos (CMD) cd to that directory.
fastboot -i 0x413C flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot -i 0x413C reboot
Streak should Reboot.
OK you have just copied over the 506 or 507 recovery image.. Congrats. your part way there.
Now I did this using my modified Streak 5 Dock that works just find for my Streak 7. That part worked perfect. The next part, if you were using it in the dock. After copying files to the SD card.. Remove from dock.. i believe it interfered. worked perfect out of the dock.
Boot to recovery VOL UP & Power at same time.
use arrows to move to option 2. Software upgrade via update.pkg on SD card. and press power button to enter.
Wait.
Recovery will load.
Read the screen. Its telling you to press the power button to use the emergency flash to recover your device. This will erase your device. (if you didn't already know this, or have this as your intention... Well... I'll leave it at that)
It will verify the pkg. then it will install. Took between 4-8 min.. Then it rebooted.
That took even longer of-course.. Just like day 1 when you turned it on after getting it from Dell.
If all went well. It will have returned you to the welcome screen where you are initially setting up your Streak 7.
Congrats. Your back to stock 506 or 507.
Now There is a 514 pkg file if your looking to upgrade to the latest as of 1/7/12. I am actually installing that as I type this.
If you decide to do the upgrade to 514.. Delete the existing update.pkg (if the streak didn't, it wasn't there when I went to copy the newer one over) and rename LG7-WiFi_514_21700_30.pkg or what ever applies to your device to update.zip and move to the sdcard.
Make sure SDCard is in Streak.
Power off the device.
Vol up and power. Select option 2 again. It will boot to recovery.
Power button to accept.
Sit back and watch.
Wait for reboot. as mine is right now
Tada.. Stock 514. Hope this helps some of you as it has helped me greatly.
Make sure to Thank TheManii and I would appreciate some Thanks if this helped you too
I will be putting up a Mirror for all the files tomorrow 1/7/12.

That is a very nice guide I used it to un-root and remove CWM from my tab, if you or I could make this more clear, and why do you type "fastboot -i 0x413C" isn't it like this example: fastboot flash recovery C:/ADB/Win32/recovery.img
?
"-i 0xAAAA" is an optional value, it tells fastboot to explicitly target a specific connected device.
0x413c is the USB pid assigned to dell, if you only have a single device connected in fastboot mode it will simply assume you mean that one device.
Thanks for Defining that TheManii.
I used that info by borrowing from the Rooting Post.
[Guide] Absolute Newbie's Guide to Rooting a Streak 7 that has Stock Honeycomb
13) On the command line type the following:
fastboot -i 0x413C flash recovery recovery.img (where recovery.img is the ClockworkMod or other recovery file)
14) On the command line type the following:
fastboot -i 0x413C reboot
MobileMedic
Enter your password?
Followed this guide to the T pretty much with the latest version from Dell. Now I get Enter your password. No password *I* know works!
Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
You need to install clockwork mod 5.0 and do a fac reset.
this doesnt work for me when i try to flash the update.pkg tru option it takes me back to cwm. Anyway to go back to stock, no cwm no root?

Success and a request for OP
I just flashed 506 over my HC Dell Streak (T-Mo) and it worked like a charm. After first boot it went right to the setup screen. This was in prep for a sale.
I would request that the OP please update the first post to reflect the steps outlined in post 10(?) - it would be helpful to have steps listed in the very first post of this thread.
Also, using the Fastboot + ADB download did not help with fastboot for me. I use a laptop for development, and that has SDK/JDK installed on it, but had originally used my desktop to nvflash back to Froyo after trying StreakDroid. The download package did not include the right support files to make fastboot work correctly on my desktop. Had to do the fastboot commands on my laptop.
I would suggest this is the best way to avoid the read-only mode when you want to clean out your Streak 7 for future sale.

How long should it take for recovery to load? I nvflashed back to 2.2, then flashed 506-30's recovery using fastboot. It's hanging when I tell it to upgrade via update.pkg (which is the 506-30 branch pkg).
EDIT: I re-nvflashed to 2.2 and stopped it from rebooting. Went to 2.2's stock recovery and flashed update.pkg (which was 506-30). No password anymore and it seems to have worked. Going to try 514-30 next.
Hi I need help, my Dell Streak 7 T-Mobile is stuck on boot loop n when I try to flash stock Rom it starts installation but right before it's seems to be completed it says "Install modem error.. installation will restart " & it reboot to tht boot loop.

3) (Optional) Flash a custom Kernel/Recovery (Three options, I suggest the FIRST)
*ATTENTION* IF FLASHING A KERNEL FOR A NEW ROM YOU WANT, YOU MUST FLASH THE ROM IMMEDIATELY AFTER FLASHING THE KERNEL WITHOUT BOOTING UP, THE KERNEL COMES FIRST. OTHERWISE, YOU MIGHT BOOT LOOP.
FIRST (AUTO) (joeykrim's FlashImageGUI method)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1423151
OR
SECOND (AUTO) (xboarder56's method)
- First, turn off wifi on your phone
- If you have SetCPU installed or any other program where you have altered to overclock or underclock, DISABLE the "set on boot" option
- You will have to download Easy Kernel Flasher v03.zip which is attached below
- Next plug in your phone and make sure its getting detected
- After that extract the zip file (kernel flasher)
- Place the boot.img of the kernel you want flashed in the "Kernel-Here" folder.
- Make sure android debugging is enabled on your phone via settings
- Click Flash.bat for windows or Flash.sh for linux and wait for it to close terminal
- Wait for your phone to reboot and wait 5-10 minutes. Then reboot again and wait 5 minutes, then you're good to go!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1328141
OR
THIRD (Manual) (Pirateghost's method)
- Extract the boot.img out of the kernel file you want and put it in the same directory as your fastboot.exe/fastboot executable
- Boot phone into hboot/bootloader (make sure you are in fastboot mode)
- Enter this code to flash the kernel and reboot the phone
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot reboot

if wanting to flash the twerp recovery,i got a report of it bricking a phone earlier today....if your wanting to flash an older version of cwm it corrupts some of the memory partitions onn the phone....end choice is yours but you have been warned
Listen, I ported a version of TWRP 2 many months ago for personal use. I also have seen the source for the standard CWM used for the Vivid.
I can tell you one thing for certain. There are issues in the (Big issues in the first few releases, but there always are in new developments), but there still are a few issues & some features that just don't work in CWM.
In TWRP, there are also issues & that is why I abandoned it & never released anything. The TWRP recovery is neat because it is fully touch capable. However, there are issues with the current version that cause boot loops & the inability to enter into bootloader, fastboot or recovery. TWRP has also been known to cause some format errors for device internal storage.
It is my learned opinion, that the best recovery for the Vivid to date is the wcxrecovery. If you were to contact AmonRa & ask him who is one of the best still making recoveries (since he has pretty much retired from the task) he would tell you that GinM is one of the best guys to build the recovery. GinM is who built the WCX recovery. It has as many or more features than any other recovery available for the Vivid & more importantly, the wcxrecovery is built from scratch using Vivid source. It is not a ported recovery, it is a true Vivid built custom recovery with many functions.
The latest CWM recovery is okay. It is a decent recovery that does the basics. TWRP is neat, but still just a novelty at this point & I can tell you first hand that it causes issues, some serious, as of version 2.1.1.
WCXRecovery works solidly, has never caused me any of the issues that the others have, it can root a rom & has many developer friendly functions.
If you care more about Bells & Whistles than performance, then you can install any recovery over wcx. The only recovery that you cannot flash over was the first CWM release.
Flashing a recovery is as easy as using fastboot & typing a few commands or using a bat script. But why you would want to sacrifice performance for one feature (Touch Screen), is a bit beyond me.
TWRP has potential. But it is just not there yet & CWM is just missing too many of the features that dev's use, not too mention the backup options available with wcxrecovery.
The reason why I'm asking is because I used the all-in-one toolkit but it didnt root my phone and I just pressed flash wildchilds recovery and now I have it. Now there is a newguide showing how to root but I'm afriad I might brick my phone since it already has this recovery. The guide basically says to flash wcx recovery which I already have. Do u guys now If I do it again it might brick it?
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using XDA
You won't brick your phone by flashing the wcxrecovery again - it's just this command:
fastboot flash recovery wcxrecovery.img
in a command window.
You must be in the folder containing the wcxrecovery.img file, and fastboot.exe should be either there in the folder or in your PATH.
But, if you already have it, why flash it again?

GSLEON3 makes a good technical case for using the WCX recovery - I also think it's really easy to use and well designed.
You can use the touch buttons to browse thru the menus -
Home: Up,
Menu: Down,
Back: Back, and
Search: Select/Confirm
Anytime it asks you to press Power to confirm, you can just tap the search button.
That's enough 'touch' functionality for me, and when it comes to tools like recovery's, eye-candy is pretty much irrelevent.
