I wonder what would be the best 2.1 firmware? I have stock jm1 on the phone, would it be good to get some newer firmware like jm8 or jm9? Also is there any big difference, or difference at all between jm8 and jm9?
Well, my phone is working fine at the moment, it has 3bt enabled, but it has lagg problem and lagg fixes not really visibly improve anything. Also GSM reception is BAD, I live in country side and Nokia used to work great as well as Huawei u8220 (my first android device). I dont know if SGSs camera can be fixed by reflashing but the quality of shots is not very good, I would say even "not acceptable" Huawei with 3mp camera was doing outstanding photos, but SGS shots look like those of simple Nokia.
Well, the BIG question is - should I flash? and if YES, to what? I read too many poor reviews of froyo on SGS that I dont want to go there.
I have flashed all the Eclaire firmwares from Europe even though I live in Australia and loved the most recent one. ie. JM9
Smoother, less lag and the updated radio is in this build as well. That would be my suggestion.
Stay..
What i mean with that is you don't seem to have read much about this.
Froyo Jpm/jp6 do work.
The problem people gets when they upgrade is often for they take shortcut. To upgrade to froyo you need to reinstall all apps. Setup the phone again.
You need to clean phone so all settings and file is gone.
Then you get no problem.

But what about lags on froyo aren't those real? I actually want to get rid of them on 2.1 that's why I want to keep away from 2.2 until there's official release.
But thank you for advise to stay, I also kinda think like that otherwise wouldn't start this topic.

Well i don't have lag.
Lag is often for people install all kind of junk and think the phone shall handle it.
Also that they ate lazy and upgrade from 2.1.
But staying on 2.1 for people saying 2.2 lagging is just so funny..
My advice to you is to learn all about flashing.
Then flash to Jpm/jp6.
Se how it work for you.
Then you can install lagfix etc...

Ok, thank you again, will read more and see if jp is a way to go. By the way is there any way to restore apps with all settings from 2.1 to 2.2? I have Titanium backup but read that it is not possible to restore data through this app.
Also there is another question - do you know if I will be able to restore original firmware with nandroid backup after flash (just in case).
Stay on Eclair till a better version of Froyo will come out. The current version of JP6 is laggy. I browse a lot and use Swype and I can tell you it's very annoying when I get hit by a stall very often. Also, using voodoo lag fix. Wiped data/cache after flashing
Don't trust DamianGto. If you trust him, then the majority is lying.. Maybe he started to accept the lags and he is treating them as 'normal'.
He has to answer my post:
- please tell me a solution that fixes the lag in touch wiz application drawer (ca be seen if you have 5-6 pages of apps and slide fast, or pinch to zoom out)
- please provide a solution for fixing the swype lagging input.
- please provide a solution for an efficient memory&cpu wise browser.
If your soulutions is "replace the apps", than no thank you.

If you do put a backup back when you have upgraded you will get problem. That is what many people do and then complain about lag and other stuff.
My point is that if you shall flash the phone you can check whats working for you and your sgs.
Don't trust what me or other say about lag etc. Its very different on different phones.
I do have a real good sgs that all thing works on. So i don't have problem. So test to flash to froyo and try it out.
If you don't like it you can always flash back to 2.1

I don't use voodoo, swype.
I do have tested alot of tweak and different Rom/kernel etc.

But i you read here you always get the feeling that its a mayor problem. Like all other problem. But there is solution on most problem.
But it lazy thing to just blame froyo when thing don't work.

Can someone answer a few questions?
1. What eclair firmware is most stable and reliable?
2. What the difference between jm8 and jm9?
3. Would Titanium backup work for restoring settings of my apps within jm versions?
4. Is there any easy way to reverse back to original firmware?

1. jm1 is stable and is a original firmware in most country.
2. All firmware in jm series is bugfix on lower number.
Many do like jm8 better.
3. yes and no. If you upgrade then its always better to start on a clean phone. Then you know there is not any settings that can interfere.
Many do get strange errors when they upgrade and blame it on the firmware.
Its wize to start from the beginning.
4. No. You must getvthe original firmware first. Samfirmware don't have the branded ones.
So you need to trick kies to think you have a lower firmware and make an upgrade.
Can you write down all data on your firmware and productcode.
You can see all that in the registry in windows. If you can export that and send me that it would be nice.

2. does that mean lower number - less bags?
My oriignal firmware was i9000xxjm1 product code was i9000hkddbt Currently I didnt get kies on my pc (removed after unsuccessfull try to update to swedish firmware) But after this thread I think my phone is a mess because I tried to install jp6 via kies and it installed jm2 instead and there were a lot of problems with csc not found so I just did nandroid restore and now have a random problems. So, I would HAVE to flash with something and since I;m heavy user of multiple apps and heavy user of swype, I would rather have one of eclair firmwares.
Then it's down to one more question:
jm1 or jm8/jm9
Jm1 is a good firmware.
But jm8 shall be little better.
Did not try that long. I flashed froyo instead.
I think that setup i got is very good.and i could never be thinking going back to 2.1.
I do alot with my sgs.
I do not call much on it. Lol.
So its up to you what you want.

+1 for this answer, will try to use Odin again. I already bricked one SGS with Odin, but that one didnt have 3bt combo, and store replacement does have it, so it's probably safer.
hmm, installed froyo but swype doesnt have russian in there, removed it and tried to install one downloaded from this forum somewhere but it keeps forth closing. Tried a few others - the same story. I need russian swype, is there any other csc available for jpm, that would help to install swype with russian in it?
Check jp6 if it has more.

Ok I have tested jpm but didn't like it - it's beautiful but I don't really need those beauties, my essential apps didn't work there that was bad part and major influence on decision - I decoded to go back to jm9 and there most of apps restored normally and I didn't lose any functionality. Well, there is another issue - I tried to change product code to scandinavian one and the closest to that value was xeu - england, than I flashed jm9 with xee csc. However, when I look at product code it shows xeu there and dbt in bak file. So I end up with xee vsc xeu product, and german original product code. How to make them similar without loosing russian language in swype?

My friend wants me to help him root his fascinate then flash a rom for it. I've noticed that the captivate on this forum has wayyy many more support compared to the fascinate. Just wondering if I can root and flash his phone to what I did to my captivate, using the same process? And using the same roms?
no
nope
nada
cant
aint happenin
Same process. i think. either way it is easy. I don't know if the one click meathods work but there should be an update.zip root specific to the fascinate as long as it is on eclair. So tell him not to update if the update drops and it should soon. Froyo has a different recovery that wont run the update.zip
If the phone has froyo you would need to flash with odin or root with a longer and more complicated meathod.
different roms. The fascinate is not a gsm phone like the captivate and vibrant and most of the rest of the galaxy s line. The rom kernel and modem are fascinate specific. There isn't any interchangability other than the apps and widgets.

a) you should check your facts, there are TWO versions of the Fascinate. There is the Verizon Fascinate which is CDMA and the Telus Fascinate 3G+ which is GSM.
b) if the OP is referencing the Verizon one, no, Captivate ROM's cannot be used on it
c) if you are referencing the Telus one, it's possible, but there will likely be bugs so I wouldn't recommend it
d) rooting should be a sinch with the one-click tool, if you have the Verizon one, grab the one-click root from any SGS forum since they should all work. If you have the Telus one, try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=838625
I owned a Vibrant, Verizon Fascinate, and now the Captivate. You can root any of them with OCLF from the market place.
u can root with anythiung, but u gotta use facisnate roms...
more than likely the fascinate would be flashable with captivate or any galaxy S roms....its been done a number of times between the phones
there are glitches here and there, like the battery drain with vibrant roms and the inverted buttons, headphones not working, etc etc
as long as you were flashing with odin and flashing the VERIZON modem file then i imagine it would work just fine....there's only one way to find out

Yes, but between the Vibrant, GT-i9000, and the Captivate/i896, those are all GSM variants. I don't think I'd ever cross GSM and CDMA ROM's.
Yeah do not do that the radios or modems Im sure are different.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using Tapatalk
Well no, even among gsm phones with similar layouts compatability is not complete. I don't know if the radio is the same hardware, out may be but despite its looks the layout is different from the vibrant having the speaker phone speaker located differently and being thinner the kernel may be entirely different.
For instance the vibrant kernel on a captivate screws up the home and back buttons and other things. Using a vibrant modem breaks bluetooth audio, but using a bell vibrant gt i9000m modem which more resembles a gt-i9000 works without flaw. But the regular gt i9000 modem has similar issue to the t mobile vibrant. Captivate modems on i9000 kernels can cause battery drain. Ect ect.... Some mixing and matching works, some doesn't. But at a minimum you would lose functionality of the camera flash.
On another note the gsm fascinate appears to be a t mobile vibrant. Soo who knows about that phone.

Same process? Yes... mostly. I have rooted and flashed my mom's Verizon Fascinate.
The only difference is that you have to use Odin to setup a recovery partition compatible with CW Recovery.

Then use Rom Manager to download a ROM and flash away...

Same ROMs? NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO
Recently the internal SD card failed on my captivate and it was completely bricked. I managed to get att to replace it for me, but I had just updated to the most recent build of the cognition rom a few days before. Is it at all possible that a rom could cause a hardware failure like that? They also said the sim card needed to be replaced.
I really want to put a rom on my new phone (hate the stock)but I don't know if I should worry about it or if I was just unlucky.
Thanks guys

the sd card frying was do to the i9000m kernel(i believe). design gears started compiling his own kernels after some dispute with setiron. and i believe a certain version of perception was a telus t959d fascinate rom with a kernel he built from i9000m bell vibrant sources instead of i9000 international source. days later the new was released that this was happening all over canada and he pulled the perception download. you are not the only one and all of the current roms and kernels are not built with that source. it is a shame because that was not a beta of any kind. that was an official update for the canadian version of the galaxy s. that said the att betas are deffinately safe. and the froyo roms for the i9000 i9000m (*not the kernel) t959 and t959d are all pretty safe. the biggest side effect is bad battery life and voice mail that may not work, or apn settings that you have to put in yourself. as long as you use a i9000 kernel with certain patches for orientation and button behavior and headphone jack logic you should have a fully functioning phone. hardcores speed mod kernel is great and gliterballs's kernel is good for a stable overclock with under volt, it also benchmarks better on some benchmarks in the market for equal clock settings.
i wont tell you not to flash froyo, that would be a shame to miss out on. what i will say is let all the flash addicts flash first, after a couple days read the thread and see what issues people are having.
also i think but i dont know but i think the full version of odin could repartition the sd card, i may be mistaken as to the nature of the sd card failure but i think some people were able to recover there phones.
now good luck with your new captivate.
I'm looking for a gingerbread install for a bell I9000-m basically just need to make sure that the swype keyboard is fairly decent or similar to the bell one and whichever replacement is found here.
Im guessing I'll need a link to a stock modem driver but I've never done this before with much success besides just kindof bumbeling through a bit.
Let me know anything that could help in my quest here.
I would like to find some links to a good set of files for this update. I've read at many places that for bell you must ask for specific files for this task as it must be more complicated for the bell setup for some reason.
Even a Nexus S firmware if port-able to this device would be fine.

Any firmware for the i9000 works on the i9000m. There are plenty of threads in the development section with gb roms. Just download the KC1 modem for either Odin or CWM and flash that - I won't get into details, there are a bazillion threads discussing how to do this properly on the i9000m

I didnt really mean just link me to the specific forum subgroup I was hoping for some more specific direction I realize my question wasn't that clear i suppose. There isn't really anything specific for the i9000m. Really, its just a matter of picking a rom and following the flashing instructions. If you're flashing a stock release (like JVH lets say), use Odin, flash the tarball with update bootloader checked and once thats done, flash an appropriate modem for Bell (for 850mhz), like KC1 that I find works very well.
If you're flashing a cooked rom, like those in the development subforum, then you'd flash something like JVH, flash an appropriate kernel with clockworkmod (I prefer speedmod, but there are others), then you'd install the cooked rom through cwm recovery.

As others have said, JVH is an official release for a lot of European carriers. It will work fine on the i9000m. I was running JVH + KC1 Modem for a while before switching to the latest Cyanogenmod nightly (which works absolutely fantastic now).
If you're looking for an official Bell Gingerbread release.... you'll just have to keep waiting. Bell is slower than the second coming. Just keep a full KC1 or JL2 (with bootloaders) around so you can flash back to stock if you need be.
Also, you said you had trouble flashing before. I'd suggest following that link in my post above, and if you get stuck, come back and we can step you through.
And finally, you really can't brick you phone as long as you are able to access download mode and 3 button recovery. Absolutely make sure you can access these two modes before flashing anything.
I have actually had issues getting into recovery mode sometimes but not usually, but have no problem entering download mode. I think at one point I wound up with upload mode... which doesent seem to be documented... But dont quote me on that one as it was a while ago (after searching high and low on my NAS I cant find the photo i took sorry). I have actually had to send this phone off to bell to get them to fix it twice now.
Once due to my inability to do this properly without making a forum post asking these question and another due to a bad Kies update sending my phone into a boot loop.
So you say Cyanogen nightly works well im thinking I might give that a shot as im sure there are good reasons why you would want to use cyanogen over another release. Im just hoping for no weird Telco specific crap on my phone unless its Bell specific if i must have even that.
Would I go into the ROM list thread for the cyanogenmod nightly? http://goo.gl/IBbEm
Which leads me to this? http://goo.gl/b5UwG
or is there a better way to obtain CM7? Also what would be a good location to try and find my modem driver (KC1)?
I'm sorry to spam questions here but one final one. Would there be a good boot loader that I should strive for, if any?

I am running the above now. I was on Darky 9.5, then upgraded yesterday to Ficeto JVB, Dark Core 2.2 and Darky's v10 RC6. Then flashed Dark Core 2.3.
I then flashed KC1 modem this morning.
Running great and loving the rom so far.. its a base rom, so not a lot of features in it but at least i can customize it to how i like it so far.
I've downloaded this file I9000UGKC1 ## 512.PIT 2.2 2011 March from samfirmwares I'm hoping it works out well for giving me the modem driver.
And
Gingerbread 2.3.3: XWJVH from http://goo.gl/AEYzr to get a gingerbread release with a boot loader.
I will now look for a copy of odin hopefully it doesn't matter which version I get but I've noticed there is allot of fuzz when it comes to odin versions or even where to obtain it even. I want to obtain it from a legitimate source but it seems as though there is no specific location as to where to get it.
At some point I would like to try Cyanogen as everyone holds it in rather high regard though I'm not really sure what the benefits would be.
Some roms on here come with odin. You can also get it from samfirmware. The development thread is where you will find all information for each release. There's a few sources for cwm flashable modems. Odin isn't bad at all, it can be a little finicky with win 7 64 bit for some people but I have had no problems with it at all. Good luck and hope you find a rom that suits you.

BUT
there is no OpenVpn OR SIP and those are the two things that I really wanted out of gingerbread.
I personally found JL2 better than KC1. I get up to 5mb/s down and 3mb/s up.
About cyanogen, you gotta try it to see . I didn't believe the difference would be noticeable either...

And just like everyone else said, you can flash i9000 roms on i9000m without any problems - in fact even flashing a different modem isn't necessary, depending on your provider, it's just better.
those are features commonly found within the custom roms for jvh
Thanks for this thread. Provided the modem for me to get this working properly.
If I were you I would stick with a Daryky rom. his 10 finaly is a little slow and glitchy at times so I recommend 10 RC6. it's a stock jvh rom with his tweeks. Cyanogen is basically vanilla rom. it's so fast (the best i've flashed so far) but it's missing swype, like you stated you wanted that. I tried getting the beta swype but it didn't work. anyways i'm actually liking the gingerbread keyboard haha. so ya, if you need swype stick with darky rom, if your looking to try an amazing rom try cyanogen.
The swype beta installed without any problems for me on cm7...
The only thing is I speak french, so either I get the english keyboard, or I get the "France" french one... which is AZERTY... u_U

I used Darky's rom for a looong time before switching to something else. I really didn't like the theme (at the time), and I found roms that seemed to perform better. I also ran a deodexed JL2 that I cooked myself for a while.
You can get swipe APKs from just about any custom rom out there, just pull the apk out of the .zip and install it. Or, I just signed up for swipe beta and installed it - works great.
Anyway, I guess the bottom line is that there are so many options available, and so many fantastic cooked roms available in the development thread, that trying them and finding one you really like is the only way to go.
I bought my Captivate in December, and have since rooted, updated to Froyo through Kies, and even flashed a couple of kernels (currently running Firebird). I log onto and read posts on XDA almost daily, its kind of like my daily newspaper! Anyway, I have never understood how its possible that so many members have an i897 Captivate-based phone, yet is able to run i9000-based modems, kernels and ROMS. I've searched and googled, and can't get a straight answer, maybe my search terms need improvement, I don't know. But, is it possible to have
i9000 ROMS (with a i9000 modem/kernel of course) on our United States i897 Captivate? Or, is it that more members on this forum have i9000 based phones than I thought?

Im just taking a shot here, but i think its because our roms are based off the i9000 roms... (theyre not the same, but theyre in the same class...)

Yes. If you flash a stock version of an i9000 ROM then you will have orientation and Home button issues though. That is why there are kernels in the Captivate development section that are based on i9000 source code and reoriented along with other tweaks. You should also take care to read and understand exactly what it is that you are doing before attempting to flash any ROM, especially one made for an extremely similar, yet different, phone.
As I've learned the hard way, make sure to stay in the captivate development section. There are plenty of I9000, roms to pick from that will work fine for your i897. Just make sure to either use the kernel with the rom or pick a reoriented one. Keep in mind there is some call quality loss with the i9000 roms. And most of all, be careful with bootloaders.

So, I can take my cappy as it is now (stock Froyo, Firebird kernel), and flash an i9000 ROM, making sure to also flash an i9000 modem and kernel (if the ROM doesn't already come with one), and that's it?

Bootloaders, the one thing I haven't read up on yet. Think I'll read, read, read, and then read a little more after that. I forgot about the bootloaders. Thanks for the heads up Cdub3!

u only need to get acquainted with bootloaders if you are planning to jump to a gingerbread ROM other than cyanogenmod7 or miui from 2.1/2.2 ROMs. GB bootloader+2.1/2.2 secondary bootloader=

it must be a REORIENTED kernel in order for it to work. in all honesty, i have found that its better to select any rom from the captivate section rather than using a straight i9000 rom from the i9000 forums. go ahead and try a few out, but you will quickly see why i would suggest getting one of the mature i9000 roms from the captivate section instead. references to front facing camera, lack of haptic feedback on the home key, and other little things will begin to creep up on you. it gets annoying.

You should flash the i9000 ROM and then flash a reoriented i9000 kernel from the Captivate development section and while the modem must be an i9000 modem when using an i9000 based ROM, you should research which modems support your carrier best. I'll assume you are on AT&T and say you need a modem that supports the 850MHz band if you want 3G support everywhere AT&T offers it when you travel inside the US. The standard i9000 modems support the 1900MHz band, which AT&T uses in my area. I'd suggest following the guides in the Captivate Development section though. Most ROMs there have done this work for you. They are almost all based on the official i9000 releases. There is nothing wrong with playing around after you understand the basics though. I run stock i9000 Gingerbread with the i9000 reoriented kernel by xcaliburinhand. Then I tailor it to my liking.
